Care2 and the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund announced the launch of the second virtual march for the environment to coincide with Earth Day, April 22, 2006. The joint effort, through a special web site is aimed at providing an opportunity for citizens to rally and let their voices be heard on such important environmental issues as selling off our national parks; undermining protections for endangered plants and animals; drilling off our fragile coastlines and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; and jeopardizing our health and that of our children through mercury and pesticide pollution.

"Congressmen Tom DeLay, Richard Pombo and their Congressional cohorts are catering to special interests at the expense of our nation's wildlife, parks and refuges," said Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund. "The Earth Day Virtual March is a great opportunity for citizens to mobilize and tell their members of Congress our wildlife and wild places are not to be sold to the highest bidder."
"With the virtual march, we are giving people a way to have a collective impact that is far greater than the impact they could have on their own," said Randy Paynter, CEO of "Virtual marchers will have access to their own personal impact pages for the campaign. This year we expect to mobilize hundreds of thousands of marchers who will deliver letters to the White House and Congress to tell them to vote responsibly on environmental issues."

Through, individuals can sign up for the march, design their own march sign with a personal message and e-mail it to their Senators and Representatives.

Marchers will also be encouraged to spread the word about the march to their friends and family. This year, marchers get a chance to win a special Earth Day Virtual March iPod Nano with each friend they recruit to the march.

Through an individualized map, each person will be able to see the ripple effect of their recruitment efforts, as dots pop up on the map every time one of their friends joins the march. This feature allows each participant to see how many marchers he or she has recruited, and how their impact spreads across the country.
