Care2 PHP Software Engineer / DBA

Care2.com is seeking an exceptional high level PHP engineer to positively impact the world around us on daily basis.

The right candidate will have 7+ years of LAMP environment experience developing and maintaining complex websites and backend tools as well as a strong mid-level set of skills and expertise in MariaDB/mySQL administration. Our needs are primarily for a PHP developer who can provide us with about occasional DBA engagement as needed. The right candidate will have hands on experience as a key contributor to the growth and evolution of technologies and systems authored in PHP/mySQL. In addition to PHP and mySQL skills, experience with Redis and ElasticSearch will be key in our effort to build out a scalable infrastructure. We are not looking for somebody to maintain the status quo. We need your skills to help us reshape and improve our systems using industry best practices.

Engineering Responsibilities:

  • Develop PHP/MySQL code to meet the continued business needs of new site features and refinement of existing functionality.)
  • Define and contribute to the creation and maintenance of internal systems supporting the company's various departments
  • Identifying and rectifying coding issues as bugs in new or existing tools surface.
  • Contribute to architecture direction and discussions, and assist in the progressive evolution of our existing code base.

DBA Responsibilities:

  • MariaDb/Mysql backup, restoration, and optimization
  • Database design, installation and maintenance of constraints
  • Administration of database objects including tables, clusters, indexes, views, sequences, packages, etc.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of ongoing daily engineering experience working with PHP and MySQL.
  • 2+ years of mid-level experience administrating MariaDB or mySQL databases
  • Work experience developing software in a business environment, preferably with Linux/UNIX/Apache.
  • Database, application architecture and software systems design experience.
  • Comfortable functioning as an architect as well as contributing as an engineer.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, a firm grasp on algorithms, and able to find and implement simple, modular, scalable solutions.
  • Engineering experience managing WordPress as a CMS.

PHP Engineer For QA/Build/Release Automation

Care2 is looking for an Automation Engineer to drive the implementation and conversion of manual Build, QA and Release processes to a predominantly automated solution. This role requires an experience engineer capable of building out the initial framework required to enable our QA AND engineering team to drive continuous software quality initiatives by authoring and maintaining regression test suites against our production, stage and testing environments. You will work closely with the QA, engineering and operations resources to identify and author automated test cases/scripts. You will build out a system to perform continuous validation of production and stage systems, confirming that business logic and client facing features always behave as expected. You will assist in test, build and release activities, taking each need and authoring automation wherever possible. Automating Build and Release tasks will further evolve our current processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning, scripting and execution of automated testing against Production, Stage and QA environments.
  • Work with the engineering/operations teams to establish automated test plans, standards, and procedures.
  • Evaluate and recommend/implement automation improvements to the Build and Release Process.
  • Ensure timely automated alerting of production/stage/QA testing issues to engineering/operations team.
  • Help write and maintain test plans, environments, test cases, automated and manual test scripts.
  • Ensure appropriate automated or manual notification of release activity within the company.
  • Reviews business requirements for complex changes related to testability and automation.
  • Triage & track production issues and work with the engineering team to resolve such issues.

Qualifications:

  • MUST HAVE 2+ years writing automated test cases using Selenium, PHPUnit, MySQL
  • MUST HAVE 2+ years experience writing code in PHP
  • MUST HAVE Excellent written & communication skills
  • MUST HAVE 4+ years in software/website QA positions
  • Experience with Jenkins and/or Bamboo a plus
  • Experience with basic UNIX commands a plus
  • Experience with issue tracking tools such as JIRA (preferred) a plus

Advocacy Internship (Paid) – Winter/Spring 2015 – Redwood City, CA

Care2.com is recruiting an intern to work with our campaigns team on various advocacy issues ranging from human rights to politics to environment and wildlife protection.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer, passionate about nonprofit issues, comfortable with HTML, and enjoys promoting progressive issues and engaging with an online community on advocacy issues. Interns learn valuable job skills and gain knowledge about the nonprofit sector and online advocacy, while sharpening their writing skills.

As a Care2 Advocacy Intern, you will:

  • Research progressive legislation and urgent advocacy topics in the US and internationally, monitor breaking news everyday for compelling campaign ideas;
  • Research and write Care2 petitions on breaking issues;
  • Write Care2 action alerts that go out to millions of Care2 members to increase awareness of nonprofit campaigns on Care2;
  • Have fun making the world a better place!

Other tasks will be assigned based on the candidate's interests and skills.

The Advocacy Intern reports to the Manager of Campaigns Strategies, and works with the entire Campaigns Team.

Internship Qualifications:

Petitions Writing and Social Media Internship (Paid) – Redwood City, CA

Care2.com is looking for an intern to help with writing, petition promotion, social media and graphics creation. As part of our team, you'll help to promote online advocacy campaigns that reach millions of people and will research and write content on the most pressing issues in the news and in the activist community. You'll work on campaigns to defend human rights, call out corruption, protect our environment and wildlife, and much more.

The ideal candidate is a very strong writer who understands current online trends, is passionate about promoting progressive causes, and enjoys engaging with an online community on advocacy issues.

Your tasks will include:

  • Monitoring the news for actionable items and trends in the activism world;
  • Writing and ghost-writing blog posts for sites around the web to help expand the exposure of Care2 Petitions;
  • Posting campaigns to online channels like DailyKOS, Tumblr, Care2's Causes blog, etc.;
  • Creating compelling social media graphics for Facebook, and putting together creative and share-worthy Community posts (complete with gifs) for Buzzfeed;
  • Executing innovative new social media strategies;
  • Pulling statistics on member performance, message performance, and web traffic;

Care2.com is recruiting a creative and enthusiastic writer to work with our progressive blogging channels Causes and Healthy Living. This full-time position will be based out of our main office in Redwood Shores, California.

The ideal candidate has:

  • At least three to five years of experience writing and publishing online content;
  • At least three years of editing experience;
  • A strong knowledge of AP style;
  • A keen understanding of current online content trends and the diverse range of topics covered on both Care2's Causes and Healthy Living channels;
  • A strong passion for animal welfare, environmental rights, holistic health, sustainable living and progressive issues;
