Web Editor/Producer - Care2 Causes

We have an opening for an enthusiastic, organized, and detail-oriented Web Editor/Producer. Responsibilities include working with our authors/bloggers and content partners, developing and assigning story ideas, responding to pitches, editing and posting content, selecting and posting images, and monitoring interactive features. You will also help drive the growth and engagement of our vibrant, active online community.

You must have experience working with content management systems, be skilled at tackling multiple projects at once, and be able to work well independently as well as collaboratively. The candidate must also have interest in and knowledge of our key content areas - animal rights, environment, progressive politics, food policy, women's rights and LGBT rights.

Key responsibilities:

• Develop and assign story ideas.
• Field story pitches.
• Post articles and images in content management system.
• Copy-edit/proof articles. Create compelling titles and ledes.
• Select and edit compelling images.
• Select and implement links to Care2 content relevant to the new post.
• Compile weekly and monthly statistics.
• Manage bloggers and editorial partners.
• Utilize social media tools.
• Create HTML coding and meta-tags/meta-descriptions for search engine optimization.
• Create polls based on news, events, trends, seasonal items, and current hot topics.

Required skills and experience:

• BA or BS in Journalism, English, Communications or similar field.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills - able to accurately proofread spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.
• Two to four years professional experience producing web content. Previous online experience essential. (Candidates with print-only experience will not be considered.)
• Proficiency with blog administration tools, content management systems and various Web browsers both PC and Mac.
• Expertise with HTML and other web technologies.
• Knowledge of online design principles; Photoshop proficiency.
• Experience with search engine optimization techniques and meta-tags.
• Experience developing story ideas, titles, and ledes to maximize traffic and sharing.
• Familiarity with politics, news, current events, social justice and environmental issues.
• Strong organizational skills; ability to multitask and prioritize time and workload.
• Enjoys being part of a team and works well in a collaborative environment.
• Ability and equipment to function remotely and collaborate across networks.

PHP Software Engineer

Care2.com is seeking an exceptional high level PHP engineer to positively impact the world around us on daily basis.

The right candidate will have 7+ years of LAMP environment experience developing and maintaining complex websites and backend tools, as well as being a key contributor to the grown and evolution of technologies and systems in use. We are not looking for somebody to maintain the status quo, but to help us reshape and improve our systems using industry best practices.

Responsibilities:

• Develop PHP/mySQL code to meet the continued business needs of new site features and refinement of existing functionality.
• Define and contribute to the creation and maintenance of internal systems supporting the company's various departments.
• Identifying and rectifying coding issues as bugs in new or existing tools surface.
• Contribute to architecture direction and discussions, and assist in the progressive evolution of our existing code base
.

Qualifications:

• 7+ years of ongoing daily engineering experience working with PHP and mySQL.
• Work experience developing software in a business environment, preferably with Linux/UNIX/Apache.
• Database, application architecture and software systems design experience.
• Comfortable functioning as an architect as well as contributing as an engineer.
• Excellent problem solving skills, a firm grasp on algorithms, and abile to find and implement simple, modular, scalable solutions.
• Familiarity with WordPress as a CMS is a plus.

Winter 2013 - Care2 Advocacy & Editorial Paid Internship -- Redwood Shores, CA

• Duration: January - May 2013

With more than 21 million members, Care2 is the Internet's largest social network for people who want to make a difference. The Care2 campaign team empowers Care2 members to take action with action-oriented tools and content on Care2.com and ThePetitionSite.com, enabling our members to rapidly pool their resources and produce lasting change. Care2 powers its members' activism via cause-driven education, activism and fundraising campaigns that benefit more than 1,000 of the world's best-known nonprofit organizations.

If you are a strong writer, savvy about social networking, passionate about nonprofit issues, comfortable with HTML and web graphic production, and enjoy promoting progressive issues and engaging with an online community on issues ranging from environmental to consumer protection, human rights to animal welfare, then Care2 is the place for you.

Internship Responsibilities:

• Write and copy edit Care2 action alerts, blog posts, and success stories;
• Monitor social media outlets to better understand how users are talking about and using Care2, and for which issues people are passionate about;
• Communicate with Care2 activist petition authors to help them promote their petitions;
• Have fun making the world a better place!

To make the internship a rewarding experience, the intern will work with the Care2 advocacy and editorial teams to develop and take the lead on a semester-long project that fits their unique skills and interests, above and beyond the daily tasks assigned.

Internship Qualifications:

• Student actively enrolled in coursework and seeking to complete school internship credit in a relevant field (such as journalism, marketing, political science, women's studies, environmental studies, public policy). Recent graduates are also invited to apply.
• Strong writing and editing skills.
• Knowledge of social networks and social media tools including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, StumbleUpon, Tumblr and Digg.
• Proficiency in HTML and web graphics production using Adobe Photoshop and/or ImageReady.
• Knowledge of basic office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Enthusiasm for Care2's nonprofit issues and progressive campaigns.
