Stop Canada's Cruel and Senseless Seal Hunt!

Nearly 1 million baby seals will be clubbed or shot to death in Canada in just three years. Shockingly, the hunt is subsidized by the Canadian government!

Every winter, Northwest Atlantic harp seals migrate to Eastern Canada to give birth and mate. Following their birth in late winter, mothers leave in search of mates, while the pups remain helpless and vulnerable on the ice until they can swim and catch their own food. It’s during this time when they are most vulnerable that they are mercilessly slaughtered for their pelts!

Hunters armed with clubs and rifles will bludgeon to death hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals. About 96% of the seals killed will be less than three months old and more than 40% may be skinned alive!

Canada's seal hunt is the largest deliberate slaughter of marine mammals in the world. But the killing of baby seals doesn't make sense economically or ecologically, nor is it sustainable. It's simply a tragic slaughter of defenseless animals that benefits a small minority of boat captains armed with big ships, snowmobiles and even personal helicopters. This isn't about small town survival or tradition, it's an industrial killing machine for profit.

But Canada wants the media and public to believe that no one cares about the innocent blood spilled each year across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This year's hunt will continue until the industry reaches its quota of 319,500 seals. That's why we must raise a public outcry.

Please tell the Canadian government that you do care and that this practice is unacceptable. We must show the Canadian Parliament that the rest of the world will no longer stand for this cruel and senseless hunt!
Take Action

250,000 Seals Dead in Just 10 Days of Hunting

The second phase of Canada's commercial seal hunt began on April 14 in Newfoundland. Of the over two hundred thousands seals already slaughtered, 95% are under three months old. IFAW monitoring teams just back from the ice report many pups are clubbed and left in agony while hunters move quickly onto the next seal while countless others are shot, but escape and die a slow death under the ice.

The Canadian seal hunt is bigger now than it has been in 50 years. This year alone, the government is allowing the methodical slaughter of 319,500 helpless seals purely in the name of profit. Many more will die that go unaccounted for.

Sealers count on the fact you won't speak out against them. The biggest advantage sealers have in their favor is the lack of awareness by the rest of the world that one of nature's greatest wildlife spectacles is being systematically destroyed by a virtual killing machine.

Please speak out today and tell the Canadian Parliament that the seal hunt is cruel and unacceptable!

Tell US Retailers to Leave Ramin in the Forest

Ramin wood is coveted for its decorative qualities and ease of crafting. In the U.S., ramin is primarily used in baby cribs. But in the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia, where ramin is found, ramin is subject to extensive illegal logging. These forests also provide critical habitat for the highly threatened orangutan, but rampant demand for ramin is decimating the orangutan's habitat to such an extent that Asia's largest primate could soon become extinct.

While the orangutan ("person of the forest" in Malay) is a protected species, its habitat is not. And according to experts, the primary threat to the species' survival is habitat destruction. The threat is grave: Today, only an estimated 15,000 - 25,000 orangutans survive in the wild, and experts predict possible extinction for the species by 2011.

To curb this habitat destruction and illegal logging of ramin, the Indonesian government has proposed placing ramin on Appendix II of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Fauna and Flora Species (CITES) this October, thus strengthening international efforts to stop the trade in illegal ramin products.

Help save the orangutan and its threatened rainforest home! Please sign this petition to ask major retailers who sell ramin products - Sears, Target, Toys "R" Us and Wal-Mart - to take two critical actions:

Ask the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US CITES representative, to support Indonesia's proposal to protect ramin at the CITES meeting starting October 2, 2004.

Stop selling cribs made from ramin wood.

If you or someone you know is shopping for a crib, please look for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. This is your guarantee that the wood in your baby's crib comes from sustainably managed forests.
Take Action

Save Endangered Whales from Deadly Fishing Gear

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered large whales in the world, with only about 300 individuals left of the species. We cannot afford to lose a single whale because of human causes. During 2004, 17 whales, including six North Atlantic right whales, were entangled when they encountered fishing gear in their ocean habitat along the U.S. East Coast.

Solutions exist to protect these whales from being entangled, injured or killed, in fishing gear, but they need to be more aggressively utilized.

In an effort to eliminate potentially deadly entanglements, the National Marine Fisheries Service (the agency responsible for protecting whales) is taking public comments on proposed alternatives to improve the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan-a strategy required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

With three of the species of whale affected by fishing gear listed as endangered, especially the extremely endangered North Atlantic right whale, we cannot afford anything less than a 100 percent effective plan to protect these magnificent animals from fishing gear encountered in their habitat.

Act Now! Ask NMFS to strengthen the protection of whales by requiring modifications to fishing gear proven to prevent whales from becoming entangled.
Take Action

You did it! By signing this petition, Care2 members told retailers and government officials that you wanted to protect the habitat of the endangered orangutan. Thanks to your thousands of messages, ramin trees, which provide habitat for the orangutan, now have greater international protection designed to reduce overexploitation and illegal trade. This remarkable decision was only possible because decision-makers saw a wide show of public support.

However, the fight is not over.
Tell Bush: Stop the importation of endangered species!

The Bush administration is proposing to allow commercial trade in endangered species for the first time in over thirty years. This radical proposal would dramatically weaken the protections for over 550 foreign species - including jaguars, elephants, and orangutans - now covered by the Endangered Species Act.

The Bush administration's proposal supports the idea of killing species in order to save them, and endorses the importation of endangered animals and body parts to benefit their conservation. But this proposal includes no standards to verify that any of the money spent on importing endangered animals or body parts actually goes to conservation, and is so vague that it practically invites fraud and illegal trade.

The illegal international trade in wildlife and wildlife products is worth billions of dollars annually. And legal trade in wildlife body parts invariably leads to increased illegal trade and poaching, creating a market for previously illegal wildlife. This proposal could lead to a resumption of the ivory trade in Africa; the capture of Asian elephants for U.S. circuses and zoos; and the importation of endangered wild parrots for the U.S. pet industry.

Please stand up for endangered species today! Tell Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton and President Bush that you oppose their proposal to allow importation of endangered species.

Dirty Fishing Bycatch Destroys Marine Life

"Dirty
Fishing" Bycatch Fishing Destroys Ecosystems

Every year and estimated 300,000 marine mammals, including whales, manatees,
and dolphins are killed in "dirty fishing" practices. Additionally, 16
billion pounds of sea life is needlessly destroyed each year.

"Dirty fishing" refers to unsustainable commercial fishing practices such as bottom-trawling and indiscriminate netting. These unselective fishing practices bring up untargeted sea life, also know as bycatch, which is thrown back either dead or dying. For instance, shrimp trawling results in up to 10 pounds of bycatch for every pound of shrimp caught.

"Dirty fishing" is devastating the marine environment. Not only are millions of sea animals needlessly dying each year, but a significant amount of sea-floor habitat, such as deep sea corals and sponges, are destroyed, lessening the capacity of our seas to support life. This waste threatens the health of the entire ocean ecosystem and the coastal communities that depend on it.

This needless destruction can be mitigated. The President has submitted his budget for the next fiscal year to
Congress including roughly $25 million in funding for National Marine Fisheries Service’s observer programs and the Bycatch Reduction Initiative.
This level of funding is far from adequate to significantly reduce the environmental damage that commercial use of unselective fishing techniques does to marine mammals, fish, sea turtles, sea birds, and marine habitat.

Care2 Members are urging Congress to increase the amount of funding available
to these programs. If you would like to help, please sign our petition to
Congress at http://www.care2.com/go/z/25909

Take Action

A new study entitled the "North Atlantic Right Whales in Crisis", released in the journal "Science," a publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science projects that the right whale could face extinction in the next one hundred years.

In the past 16 months, there have been eight recorded right whale deaths - almost three times the average annual rate in 25 years of study of the species - but many more whales of this species are believed to have died during that time period.
Prevent the Misuse of Antibiotics

The Preservation of Antibiotics for Human Treatment Act (S. 2508) will phase out the routine feeding of medically important antibiotics to healthy livestock and poultry. The poultry and livestock industries have been major culprits in the overuse of antibiotics. The misuse of antibiotics is leading to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which are causing increasing numbers of serious, difficult-to-treat illnesses in humans.

Healthy farm animals are routinely fed antibiotics to promote growth and compensate for unsanitary conditions, particularly at crowded factory farms. This "nontherapeutic" use of antibiotics in healthy pigs, poultry, and beef cattle constitutes an estimated 70% of all antibiotics used in the United States.

S. 2508 will phase-out the nontherapeutic use of eight types of antibiotics in animal agriculture that are also used in human medicine, or are so closely related to human use drugs that they trigger cross-resistance. By targeting the nontherapeutic use of antibiotics, the bill properly allows sick animals to receive necessary treatment.

The act also bans the use in poultry of Cipro-like drugs called fluoroquinolones. In October 2000, the FDA proposed to ban poultry fluoroquinolones because their use undercuts the effectiveness of Cipro and related drugs in treating certain forms of severe food poisoning in humans.

The American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, the World Health Organization and other leading health organizations are on record opposing both the nontherapeutic use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.

Add your voice and press for fast action on this vital legislation. Send a letter now to your Senator and ask him or her to stand for public health and safety by cosponsoring and supporting S. 2508, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Human Treatment Act.

Antibiotics Victory! FDA Bans Medically Important Antibiotic in Poultry

After a five-year battle, the FDA finally banned Cipro-like antibiotics for use in poultry. These drugs, like Bayer's Bactril, are used in people to treat food poisoning and bacterial infections.

This action is the first time that FDA has ever withdrawn an agricultural antibiotic from the market because of concerns about antibiotic resistance affecting human health. The ban was proposed in October 2000, but took nearly five years to finalize because of numerous procedural delays created by drug manufacturers.

According to the Keep Antibiotics Working coalition, the FDA has shown that use of Baytril in poultry reduces the effectiveness of Cipro in treating Campylobacter, one of the most common causes of severe bacterial food poisoning. The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that resistance to Cipro in Campylobacter in humans has risen to 21 percent as of 2002; when Cipro-like drugs were first approved for use in poultry in 1995, such resistance was negligible.

The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the U.S. - about 25 million pounds annually - are routinely fed to poultry, swine, and beef cattle not to treat illness but rather to promote slightly faster growth and to compensate for overcrowded and unhealthy conditions in concentrated animal feeding operations. More than half of these drugs are identical or similar to antibiotics that are important in human medicine. Use of antibiotic feed additives spurs the development and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria in our food supply and the environment.

In response to the crisis of abandoned animals after Hurricane Katrina, Reps. Tom Lantos, Christopher Shays, and Barney Frank have just introduced the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), currently in Congress, that will protect pets in federal evacuation plans, and urge officials to save currently stranded pets.

Some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them, resulting in even more casualties. Furthermore, the Humane Society of the United States believes that while more than 6,000 pets have been saved in Mississippi and Louisiana, tens of thousands more could still be in New Orleans alone. Pressure is still needed to save these animals, and a formal policy is needed to protect pets in future disasters, like Hurricane Rita.

By the end of the hunt, more than 300,000 seals are expected to be clubbed or shot to death by fishermen who hunt seals off-season to pick up extra cash by selling their skins. Almost all of their victims will be babies -- some as young as 12 days old.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is recommending that manatees be downlisted from endangered to threatened status on the state level.

Last year was the second highest manatee mortality year on record. Just in the last five years, 1682 manatees have died in Florida waters and of those, 398 were killed by boats. Furthermore, state scientists estimate the manatee population could drop by half in the next 50 years because of habitat loss, red tide poisoning and boat collisions. The population is far from stable.

Manatees are poised to be downlisted regardless of how they are faring in the wild because of a calculated effort by special interest groups opposed to boat speed zones and restrictions on development.

Later this summer, the FFWCC will vote on this issue. If the commission approves, restrictions that have kept in check boat speeds, seawalls, docks and waterfront home-building could be diluted or eliminated. Urge Governor Bush to take a stand and keep protections for the manatee in place!
Take Action

Tell ExxonMobil: Protect Polar Bears, Not Profits!

ExxonMobil is swimming in cash...while polar bears are drowning in the Arctic.

ExxonMobil raked in over $35 billion in profits in 2005, and another $8.4 billion in the first quarter of 2006. But where are Exxon's priorities?

ExxonMobil has given its former CEO Lee Raymond a retirement package worth almost $400 million. Yet, it still refuses to pay punitive damages for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill that killed birds, fish, sea otters and other wildlife – some of which have yet to recover.

ExxonMobil is the sole major oil company to remain in Arctic Power, the lobbying group whose only purpose is to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to toxic oil drilling. The Arctic Refuge is home to caribou, millions of migratory birds, and other wildlife. It is also one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's remaining polar bears.

In the past five years, ExxonMobil has spent nearly $37 million on lobbyists and millions more in campaign contributions to relentlessly push its anti-wildlife agenda and fight efforts to curb global warming – the same warming that's melting sea ice and leaving walrus calves and polar bears to starve and drown.

Tell ExxonMobil's CEO to stop pushing for oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge; to withdraw its support of the pro-drilling Arctic Power lobbying firm; and to start investing in renewable energy for the future. Let ExxonMobil know that until they mend their anti-wildlife ways, you will be boycotting their gasoline!
Take Action

Stop mining from threatening Canada's First Nations

Canada's boreal forest and the First Nations' communities that call it home are being threatened by mining activity. Increasingly, extractive industries like Platinex Inc. and diamond giant De Beers are vying for access to the boreal forest. Development is proceeding at a rapid rate in northern Ontario without consideration for intact forests, watersheds or wildlife such as woodland caribou, and against the wishes of First Nations.

Ontario's boreal forests are home to at least 28 Aboriginal communities, many of whom maintain strong ties to the land. Recently, Chiefs and representatives from several First Nations, including Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug declared a moratorium on mining exploration and forestry on their traditional territories.

The response they got: Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug is now being sued by Platinex for $10 billion in damages!

This is despite the fact that in 2003, Ontario's Premier Dalton McGuinty promised to "institute meaningful, broad-scale land-use planning for Ontario's Northern Boreal Forest before any new major development . . . [that would] protect the ecological integrity of this natural treasure and help to provide a sustainable future for native people and northern communities."

He has not kept that promise, and as a result, mining and exploration companies are threatening First Nations’ identities as Aboriginal People and putting at-risk-species in further danger. The First Nations and this last intact forest ecosystem deserve better.

Thank PA Governor for cracking down on puppy mills

Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations where profit is given a higher priority than the well-being of dogs.

The health of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profit. The female dogs are housed in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions often times without adequate food, water, veterinary care or socialization. They are caged their entire lives and bred at every opportunity until they are no longer physically able to reproduce. After the dogs are no longer profitable they are commonly killed or abandoned.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and some states license and inspect puppy mills, but the puppy mills often get around licensing requirements by selling directly to consumers and some simply rely on the limited reach of the law.

Recently, Pennsylvania’s Governor Edward G. Rendell dismissed members of the Pennsylvania Law Advisory Board in an initial step toward cracking down on inhumane conditions in the state’s puppy mills.

Pennsylvania is often referred to as the puppy mill capital of the east with Lancaster County having the highest concentration of puppy mills of any county in the country.

Governor Rendell made an important step in transforming this industry that deserves to be recognized. Please join the ASPCA in sending a message of support to Governor Rendell to let him know that his efforts are not going unnoticed! Perhaps with our encouragement, other leaders will follow in his footsteps.
Take Action

The Internet has emerged as a new vehicle for hunters to remotely kill wild animals with little more than the click of a mouse.

In canned hunts involving big cats -- bobcats, lions, and tigers are often sold to fenced-in hunting farms where hunters pay big money to brutally kill them.

But now, a new technology has emerged where over the Internet, a person can point, click, and shoot these beautiful animals via mounted rifle cameras, without ever leaving the comfort of their computer.

Thankfully, legislation has been proposed in the House to formally outlaw this horrifying new trend in canned hunting. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) has introduced the Computer-Assisted Remote Hunting Act (H.R. 1558) which prohibits computer-assisted hunting in which the "hunter" remotely aims and fires a weapon to kill an animal.

Save the Lives of Cats and Dogs: Support Non-Surgical Sterilization

Imagine being able to sterilize your dog or cat without surgery or anesthesia, but with a simple injection.

While a sterilization injection is not available yet, it will be. WHEN is a matter of how much the public pressures pharmaceutical companies, scientists, regulators and funders into developing the right tools.

While many U.S. pet owners are able to afford and access spay/neuter surgery, it's often a different story for low-income pet owners and rural residents. Surgical sterilization is also logistically difficult and expensive for population control of un-owned animals, such as shelter animals and feral cats. An estimated five million cats and dogs die each year in US shelters alone.

The situation is even more desperate in many other countries where geographic, economic and cultural barriers prevent widespread use of sterilization to control dog and cat populations. Suffering is often greatest in these communities.

Much of this tragedy could be prevented by the development of new non-surgical tools which will facilitate population control as well as providing health and behavioral benefits to the animals receiving them. These tools will enable sterilization of those animals traditional sterilization has not reached.

Last year, three foreign-owned slaughter plants cruelly butchered more than 90,000 horses for human consumption in Europe and Asia. Tens of thousands more of America's horses were exported from the U.S. and slaughtered in other countries.

The methods used to slaughter these horses can be exceptionally inhumane. The horses are frequently forced to endure repeated stuns or blows and often times remain conscious while they are being killed.

Officials in a southwestern Chinese county brutally slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies.

Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot. Killing teams also entered villages at night creating noise to get dogs barking, and then beat the animals to death.

Right now, Japanese fishermen are killing thousands of dolphins and porpoises as part of their annual hunt. Between October and April, more than 20,000 of these graceful creatures will be slaughtered. Speak out against this barbaric and unnecessary practice now!

Why is this government-sanctioned event happening? Officials claim the slaughter is a form of "pest control" since the dolphins may compete with a fisherman's catch. But the butchered dolphins are actually being sold off to supermarkets and grocery stores!

Gang members, who are often legally prohibited from owning armed weapons, frequently use dogs as weapons to intimidate community members. This novel law was developed as a solution to protect the public from dangerous dogs, while also keeping the best interests of dogs at heart.

Public Act 94-0818 will make it a misdemeanor for a person convicted of a felony to own, possess, have custody of, or reside with an un-neutered dog older than 12 weeks of age, or any dog deemed "vicious" under the Illinois Animal Control Act.

"Dogs are wonderful companions and great protectors in many situations," stated State Representative Jerry Mitchell. "They were never meant to be used as a weapon to protect or defend illegal activities."

Please join the ASPCA in thanking Rep. Jerry Mitchell and Sen. William Haine for sponsoring this extremely important public and animal safety bill.
Take Action

Puppy Torturers Receive Strong Sentence – Congratulate Georgia DA!

Last August, two teenage brothers in Atlanta, GA, were charged with torturing and baking a three-month-old puppy to death. Just recently, justice was served - the brothers received the maximum sentence allowable in each of the nine counts under which they were charged. These sentences will be served concurrently, and in effect, the young men will serve 10 years in prison and 10 years under strict probation, for a total of 20 years.

The horrific death of this poor puppy touched animal lovers around the world, and the strong sentencing in this case highlights how strongly the public feels about cruelty toward animals.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard felt so strongly about seeking justice in this case – describing the death of this puppy as "so egregious it cries out for special attention" - that he sent a letter to Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue requesting that the penalty for animal cruelty be raised above the current five year maximum.

DA Howard should be applauded for his commitment to justice and the humane treatment of animals – please sign this petition today to congratulate him on success in this case!

Tell FDA you don't want cloned meat for dinner!

Do you want to eat animal clones?

If you answered no, you're not alone – most Americans would rather not eat milk and meat from cloned animals. Yet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering allowing milk
and meat from cloned animals and their offspring
to be sold as food, without any requirement to

label this food as derived from clones – meaning cloned meat and milk could soon be coming to a market near you.

What's the problem with food from clones? Cloning produces unhealthy animals who suffer needlessly. Clones die at a young age, suffer birth defects, and are often treated with antibiotics, possibly contributing to an increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria.

New food technology such as animal cloning should be proven safe for humans and animals before being allowed on the market. Urge the FDA to keep the moratorium on meat and milk from cloned animals and their offspring and to require food from clones to be labeled if it is ever allowed on the market.
Take Action

Oppose the Killing of Cats

In the U.S., more cats are intentionally killed than die of any other cause. But this doesn't have to be the case.

Virtually every feral cat that enters a shelter or animal control facility is killed. The very system that is supposed to care about the welfare of animals is, in fact, subjecting them to a ruthless policy of extermination.

Funded by taxpayer dollars, these inhumane programs do not effectively control cat population growth. Only one method - Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) - does.

All cats, even those born outside and having never lived with a human family, should be allowed to live the lives they deserve - outdoors, happy, healthy and prevented from becoming part of an endless cycle of breeding.

Sign the petition below showing that you want the killing of feral cats to stop. Then learn about the TNR method and how you can take personal action to help these cats.
Take Action

End the Seal Hunt by Using Your Buying Power!

Last year, the hunt left more than 350,000 seals dead -- almost all of them were babies as young as 12 days of age. One of our most effective weapons against the hunt is a boycott of Canadian seafood.

Why? Seal hunting is an off-season activity for Canada's east coast commercial fishermen. Only a small fraction of their incomes come from selling seal skins to the fur industry. The majority of their income is made through seafood products such as snow crab, cod, scallops and shrimp.

This financial connection between the commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt means that people all over the world have the power to end the hunt by choosing not to buy seafood products from the hunters.

This year, we are excited to report that the boycott is working! The Canadian fishing industry has suffered a $350 million (Canadian) decline in the value of snow crab exports to the United States.

Put the pressure on Canada's fishing industry by joining the more than 350,000 people who have pledged not to buy Canadian seafood products until this cruel hunt ends for good.

Keep Wolves Protected in the Northern Rockies

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list in the Northern Rockies, and the public comment period ends May 9!

If these critical protections are eliminated, the recently recovered gray wolf population in this area will be at the mercy of state governments that are determined to resume widespread wolf killing.

De-listing of an animal can work if the states are prepared with effective programs to keep populations healthy. But these states do not have wolf-friendly programs in place. In January, Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter said that once the wolves are de-listed, his state would kill all but 100 of the wolves, making the decades-long efforts to strengthen wolf populations in vain.

Tell the Fish & Wildlife Service that you're outraged by their proposal to remove wolves in the Rockies from federal protections under the Endangered Species Act.

Studies have shown that an estimated 25 to 40 percent of domestic violence victims are unable to escape their abusers because they worry about what will happen to their pets or livestock, thus perpetuating the abusive situations they live in. In fact, 71 percent of pet-owning women in shelters reported that a pet had been threatened, injured or killed by their abuser.

We as a nation learned after the disaster of Hurricane Katrina that people seeking protection need to be able to protect their pets, too.
Save Sea Turtles from Extinction - Take the Plastic Bag Pledge

Leatherback turtles have been around for 100 million years, but if changes are not made for these turtles, they could be wiped out from the Pacific Ocean in just ten more years.

Suspend NFL Quarterback Michael Vick for Dogfighting!

This week, a federal grand jury indicted NFL star quarterback Michael Vick and three cohorts on felony dogfighting charges.

The abuses described in the indictment are almost beyond belief, and include a report of Vick being consulted before the execution of the losing dog "by wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting the animal."

The indictment also describes "the execution of approximately eight dogs that did not perform well in "testing" sessions ... by methods including hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog's body to the ground."

Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Michael Vick should be suspended from the NFL immediately!

Protect Polar Bears from Extinction!

In as few as 50 years, America's polar bears could be gone.

New research by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) predicts dramatic declines in polar bear populations as global warming melts the Arctic sea ice these bears depend on for survival. It has never been so urgent to reduce global warming emissions and protect polar bears from extinction.

In light of these findings, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has reopened a brief, two week comment period on its January 2007 proposal to list polar bears as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

No more delays or excuses - it's time to protect polar bears and their melting homes. Sign our petition to submit your official public comment urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect polar bears from extinction!

Save Chimpanzees from the Bushmeat Trade!

Chimpanzees are our closest human relatives – they have family bonds, make and use tools and show signs of language – and yet, humans are wiping them out.

Wild chimpanzee populations have plummeted in the last 20 to 30 years, and face more threats ahead. The bushmeat trade (the unsustainable hunting of wildlife) is a root issue endangering chimpanzees. To make this practice even worse, orphaned chimpanzee babies are typically sold in local markets and often end up in the pet trade after watching their mothers being brutally killed.

Hunters remove more than 1 million metric tons of bushmeat from the Congo Basin forests each year. In only one year, 15,000 carcasses from wild species passed through the markets in the city of Brazzaville - approximately 293 of them were chimpanzees.

It's time the U.S. stood up against the cruel practice pushing chimps and other endangered species to the brink of extinction.

Protect Snow Leopards - Urge Congress to Act!

As few as 3,500 Snow Leopards are left in the wild today. The snow leopard is supremely adapted to its mountain home – with their thick furry tails nearly as long as the rest of their bodies, dense, woolly fur and markings that camouflage them against the rocky slopes.

The main threat to the snow leopard's survival comes from human activities. Snow leopards are hunted illegally for their pelts. They also face retribution killings from herders over livestock and their habitat is being degraded and fragmented.

Many people in the mountain communities throughout snow leopard habitat live on less than $1 a day. They just don't have resources to protect snow leopards.
Alaska is truly our nation's last frontier. It is also the last place in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to chase and kill wolves. They shoot these animals from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank.

Thirty five years ago, Congress passed a law to put an end to aerial hunting. But Alaska is exploiting a loophole in federal law to resume the practice, not only for wolves, but bears as well. Hundreds of scientists have condemned what Alaska is doing, even as other states threaten to follow Alaska's lead. It's time to stop aerial hunting once and for all.

President Bush: Farewell, and Clean Up Your Mess!

Our wildlife and the habitat they depend on deserve leaders who are good stewards of the land, not beholden to corporate interests. But President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and their anti-wildlife cronies such as Gale Norton and Dirk Kempthorne have made a mess – and a mockery – of our environmental regulations and wildlife protections.

Over the past seven years, the Bush/Cheney Administration has worked to:

Block meaningful efforts to address climate change now threatening polar bears, penguins and other wildlife.

Stop the Seal Hunt

This year the Canadian government promised a more humane hunt. They said "Canada's seal hunt is humane, sustainable and responsible." They lied.

IFAW Hunt Observers were on the ground and in the air documenting the hunt since it opened on the 28th of March. Only days into the hunt they captured on camera instances where animals were shot and clearly left to suffer. They witnessed live seals hooked and dragged across the ice. And in one of the more disturbing moments they

Condemn the "Greatest Show on Earth"

An upcoming TV series, "Greatest Show on Earth", promises a "behind-the-scenes" look at the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But the real story is that Circus staff regularly abuse and torment performing elephants with bull hooks, chains and other devices.

The abuse of Ringling Bros. circus elephants -- well documented by animal welfare organizations, state humane agencies, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors -- violates both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act, which prohibit the abuse of endangered animals used in entertainment.

Many have witnessed routine violent abuse and cruelty toward the elephants, including frequently hitting the elephants with bull hooks, rubbing dirt into sores of elephants to conceal their wounds, and routinely chaining the elephants on concrete or in cramped rail cars for many hours of every day and night.

This kind of cruelty is not entertainment -- contact TNT and urge them to cancel the "Greatest Show on Earth" series.

Protect Pets from Toxins

A recent study found that American pets suffer from significantly more contamination from synthetic industrial chemicals than people. Our homes are permeated by untested chemical compounds that pets absorb through their grooming habits and proximity to household furnishings.

Dogs were contaminated with 35 chemicals, including carcinogens and neurotoxins. Cats were contaminated 46 chemicals, including carcinogens, neurotoxins, and chemicals toxic to the endocrine system.

The potential result is higher incidence of health problems, for example cancer in dogs and hyperthyroidism in cats. Worse yet, the risks faced by pets are shared by humans too, especially the most vulnerable. Infants and toddlers play close to the floor and put household objects in their mouths, and in the process they are exposed to the same dangers as pets.

We need a new system of public health protections in which companies have to prove chemicals are safe before they are sold. Not only would it help protect our pets, but ourselves as well. Act today!
Take Action

Stop Sea Lion Killing Plan

The National Marine Fisheries Service recently authorized the killing of up to 85 federally protected sea lions this year at the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River in Oregon.

Federal and state officials claim they have to kill sea lions to protect endangered salmon. But sea lions are not the main threat to endangered salmon on the Columbia river - dams, habitat loss and humans are.

Consider the facts:

Sea lions kill between 0.4% and 4.2% of salmon and steelhead returning to the Columbia River each year;

Federal dams on the Snake River kill over 15% of returning steelhead and salmon adults each year;

Oregon and Washington states, which requested permission to kill sea lions, proposed increasing fishing quotas from 9% to 12% of the 2008 salmon run.

A federal judge is set to rule on this plan on May 8th, and until then no sea lions may be killed. Yet six federally protected sea lions were just found shot to death on the Columbia River at Bonneville Dam. Make sure no more sea lions die - tell NMFS to abandon its plan to allow killing of sea lions on the Columbia River!

Stop Puppy Mills in Pennsylvania

The poor treatment and abysmal conditions of dogs in Pennsylvania's puppy mills is already well documented, but a bill to amend the Pennsylvania Dog Law will soon be introduced in the state's House of Representatives.

Passage of this bill is vital if Pennsylvania is to improve conditions for dogs kept in commercial kennels and put an end to the state's reputation as the "puppy mill capital of the East." The bill would require:

    * Doubling the cage space.
    * Veterinarian visits at least once per year and with each pregnancy.
    * Access to outdoor exercise areas.
    * And many more provisions for the health and well-being of dogs.

Sign the petition and urge the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to reform the Dog Law. The dogs have suffered long enough!
Take Action

Ban Deadly Pesticides that Kill Wildlife

Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide are deadly poisons that are currently used to kill predators. These poisons are indiscriminate, cause extreme suffering before death, and threaten endangered species, pets, children, and anyone who happens to come in contact with them.

Compound 1080 is one of the most deadly poisons in the world. It is highly toxic in small doses and is deadly to humans, wildlife and pets, and there is no known antidote. The EPA banned compound 1080 in 1972, but intense lobbying by the livestock industry led to its re-approval for use in predator control programs in 1985.

It's time for our government to approach wildlife management in a humane and intelligent way. There is no need to use deadly poisons to "control" predators. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) has introduced legislation to ban these toxic chemicals - please urge your representative in Congress to support H.B. 4775, the Compound 1080 and M-44 Elimination Act, today!
Take Action

Polar Bears Need REAL Help, Not Empty Listing

The Bush/Cheney Administration has just listed the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), after four months of delays. Unfortunately, it could be an empty gesture, lacking in any meaningful protections for polar bears.

With this listing, the administration has failed to:

designate critical habitat for polar bears;

stop destructive oil drilling in prime polar bear habitat;

require specific steps to be taken to address global warming and its disastrous effect on Arctic sea ice and polar bears' survival.

In fact, Interior Secretary Kempthorne made clear that the listing should not be used to address global warming or habitat loss -- the two main factors contributing to the decline of polar bears in the U.S.

This week's listing is already coming at the eleventh hour for polar bears -- these majestic bears can't wait for another administration. Demand REAL protections with a meaningful ESA listing for America's polar bears! (Learn more about this listing.)
Take Action

Don't Put Human Genes Into Goats for Drug Development!

The Food and Drug Administration is currently reviewing ATryn, a new pharmaceutical drug that comes from the milk of genetically modified goats. Scientists in New England have developed transgenic goats that posses a human gene. This gene makes the goats produce human proteins in their milk, and this protein forms the basis of the ATryn drug.

By putting human genes into goats, bioengineers are turning helpless animals into mere drug factories. Indeed, fewer than 10 out of every 100 animals injected with the human gene while still in their mother's womb will be able to produce the altered milk. The other baby goats bred for drug production are killed immediately. What's more, some "successful" transgenic baby goats develop severe birth defects that scientists don't understand.

Help stop this cruel farming process before it becomes widespread! Urge the FDA commissioner to deny ATryn and any other drug that comes from genetically altered animals.
Take Action

Hunting polar bears is illegal in the United States. The recent decision to list the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act closed a gaping loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) that had allowed wealthy U.S. trophy hunters to kill polar bears in Canada, where such hunting is legal, and import polar bear trophies into the U.S.

But now Safari Club International, a big game trophy hunters' club, is suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reverse this ban on importing polar bear trophies. More than 900 polar bear heads and hides had been imported into the U.S since 1994 because of the MMPA loophole.

We have to do everything we can to prevent the polar bear's downward spiral. We need the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stand strong on polar bear trophy hunting - urge Director Dale Hall to uphold the ban on importing polar bear hunting trophies from Canada.
Take Action

Say No to Corn-Fed Beef, Save the Planet

Nearly 100% of beef sold in grocery stores is from corn-fed cows. But feeding corn to cows is cruel and is detrimental to our health and the environment.

Cows are meant to digest grass, so corn diets lead to extreme digestive discomfort, including bloating to the point of potential suffocation, and weak immune systems. Corn-fed cows live on cramped feedlots, unable to move.

Feeding corn to cows also breeds bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics and digestive acids in humans. Corn production and waste from corn-fed animals are a huge source of greenhouse gas, water and air pollution.

Instead, stores should sell beef from grass-fed cows who roam free their whole lives, eliminating the ethical, health, and environmental problems corn feeding operations incur.

If consumers create a demand for more sustainable grass-fed beef, producers will listen.</
