Stop Canada's Cruel and Senseless Seal Hunt!

Nearly 1 million baby seals will be clubbed or shot to death in Canada in just three years. Shockingly, the hunt is subsidized by the Canadian government!

Every winter, Northwest Atlantic harp seals migrate to Eastern Canada to give birth and mate. Following their birth in late winter, mothers leave in search of mates, while the pups remain helpless and vulnerable on the ice until they can swim and catch their own food. It’s during this time when they are most vulnerable that they are mercilessly slaughtered for their pelts!

Hunters armed with clubs and rifles will bludgeon to death hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals. About 96% of the seals killed will be less than three months old and more than 40% may be skinned alive!

Canada's seal hunt is the largest deliberate slaughter of marine mammals in the world. But the killing of baby seals doesn't make sense economically or ecologically, nor is it sustainable. It's simply a tragic slaughter of defenseless animals that benefits a small minority of boat captains armed with big ships, snowmobiles and even personal helicopters. This isn't about small town survival or tradition, it's an industrial killing machine for profit.

But Canada wants the media and public to believe that no one cares about the innocent blood spilled each year across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This year's hunt will continue until the industry reaches its quota of 319,500 seals. That's why we must raise a public outcry.

Please tell the Canadian government that you do care and that this practice is unacceptable. We must show the Canadian Parliament that the rest of the world will no longer stand for this cruel and senseless hunt!
Take Action

Tell US Retailers to Leave Ramin in the Forest - update

You did it! By signing this petition, Care2 members told retailers and government officials that you wanted to protect the habitat of the endangered orangutan. Thanks to your thousands of messages, ramin trees, which provide habitat for the orangutan, now have greater international protection designed to reduce overexploitation and illegal trade. This remarkable decision was only possible because decision-makers saw a wide show of public support.

However, the fight is not over. Your continued support is needed to urge US retailers to stop selling products, like baby cribs, made out of ramin wood. Click here for more information, and thank you for making a difference!

Tell Congress to Keep Sewage Out of Our Drinking Water!

Two phrases you never want to see in the same sentence: drinking water and "sewage blending." And yet, that's the Bush Administration's new plan for your water supply!

Incredibly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is about to relax restrictions on dumping sewage into our waterways. Their plan would allow water treatment facilities to release sewage filled with human wastes, toxins, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pollutants into our drinking water.

"Sewage blending" poses a serious threat to our health and our communities. Sewage that has not been fully treated carries diseases such as cholera, hepatitis, respiratory infections, and others which can be life threatening for those with weakened immune systems.

In addition to the health hazards, sewage dumping will have adverse, long-term environmental and economic consequences. Sewage in our waterways forces beach closings, increases the cost of drinking water filtration, damages coral reefs, shuts down shellfish beds, and robs the water of oxygen that fish need to breathe.

This proposal is so outrageous, we've got to get EVERYONE to take action to defeat it. Urge Congress to support the Save Our Waters from Sewage Act (H.R. 1126) to protect our families, children and communities from unsafe drinking water!

Your help is critical to LCV as it works to protect our families from unsafe drinking water and to shape a pro-environment Congress and White House.
Take Action

Don't Let Frist Eliminate the Filibuster! - update

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation's leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman's right to choose, issued the following statement in response to the announcement of a bipartisan deal to avoid Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's "nuclear option."

"We're heartened that the crisis has been averted and the right to filibuster preserved for upcoming Supreme Court nominations. We are confident that a Supreme Court nominee who won't even state a position on Roe v. Wade is the kind of extraordinary circumstance this deal envisions. And we are determined to see Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen and William Pryor -- three judges whose combined respect for individual rights remains negligible -- defeated with the votes of the moderate senators on both sides that supported this compromise.

Pro-choice Americans from across the country rallied against the nuclear option, sending more than 150,000 phone calls, emails and other messages to senators. Our efforts against these nominations will start first thing tomorrow, and will be even more intense."

Tell US Retailers to Leave Ramin in the Forest

Ramin wood is coveted for its decorative qualities and ease of crafting. In the U.S., ramin is primarily used in baby cribs. But in the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia, where ramin is found, ramin is subject to extensive illegal logging. These forests also provide critical habitat for the highly threatened orangutan, but rampant demand for ramin is decimating the orangutan's habitat to such an extent that Asia's largest primate could soon become extinct.

While the orangutan ("person of the forest" in Malay) is a protected species, its habitat is not. And according to experts, the primary threat to the species' survival is habitat destruction. The threat is grave: Today, only an estimated 15,000 - 25,000 orangutans survive in the wild, and experts predict possible extinction for the species by 2011.

To curb this habitat destruction and illegal logging of ramin, the Indonesian government has proposed placing ramin on Appendix II of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Fauna and Flora Species (CITES) this October, thus strengthening international efforts to stop the trade in illegal ramin products.

Help save the orangutan and its threatened rainforest home! Please sign this petition to ask major retailers who sell ramin products - Sears, Target, Toys "R" Us and Wal-Mart - to take two critical actions:

Ask the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US CITES representative, to support Indonesia's proposal to protect ramin at the CITES meeting starting October 2, 2004.

Stop selling cribs made from ramin wood.

If you or someone you know is shopping for a crib, please look for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. This is your guarantee that the wood in your baby's crib comes from sustainably managed forests.
Take Action

This summer explorers Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen are crossing the Arctic Ocean to draw attention to a region in crisis due to global warming.

You can help without traveling the ice flows!

Pledge to fight global warming, and call on your elected officials to join the fight by passing the Climate Stewardship Act.

Higher temperatures threaten dangerous consequences: drought, disease, floods, and the loss of precious endangered species. And amid the threat from rising oceans and extreme weather, global warning's effects have already begun.

But solutions are in sight: We know where most heat-trapping gases come from: power plants and vehicles. And we know how to curb their emissions: modern technologies and stronger laws.

The Climate Stewardship Act is the first step forward in Countering the Climate Crisis. This is a bill that makes sensible and affordable reductions in greenhouse gas pollution, and provides flexible solutions as a way of curbing costly environmental, public health, and economic damages.

To make sure it is passed, we need your help.

Lonnie and Eric are doing what they can to counter the climate crisis - and you can too!

The second phase of Canada's commercial seal hunt began on April 14 in Newfoundland. Of the over two hundred thousands seals already slaughtered, 95% are under three months old. IFAW monitoring teams just back from the ice report many pups are clubbed and left in agony while hunters move quickly onto the next seal while countless others are shot, but escape and die a slow death under the ice.

The Canadian seal hunt is bigger now than it has been in 50 years. This year alone, the government is allowing the methodical slaughter of 319,500 helpless seals purely in the name of profit. Many more will die that go unaccounted for.

Sealers count on the fact you won't speak out against them. The biggest advantage sealers have in their favor is the lack of awareness by the rest of the world that one of nature's greatest wildlife spectacles is being systematically destroyed by a virtual killing machine.

Save Endangered Whales from Deadly Fishing Gear

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered large whales in the world, with only about 300 individuals left of the species. We cannot afford to lose a single whale because of human causes. During 2004, 17 whales, including six North Atlantic right whales, were entangled when they encountered fishing gear in their ocean habitat along the U.S. East Coast.

Solutions exist to protect these whales from being entangled, injured or killed, in fishing gear, but they need to be more aggressively utilized.

In an effort to eliminate potentially deadly entanglements, the National Marine Fisheries Service (the agency responsible for protecting whales) is taking public comments on proposed alternatives to improve the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan-a strategy required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

With three of the species of whale affected by fishing gear listed as endangered, especially the extremely endangered North Atlantic right whale, we cannot afford anything less than a 100 percent effective plan to protect these magnificent animals from fishing gear encountered in their habitat.

Act Now! Ask NMFS to strengthen the protection of whales by requiring modifications to fishing gear proven to prevent whales from becoming entangled.
Take Action

Don't Let Frist Eliminate the Filibuster!

Our ability to save the Supreme Court from President Bush could hang in the balance...

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) is hatching a plan to allow President Bush to pack the courts with extremist judges. Frist wants to take away pro-choice Democrats’ most powerful line of defense against extremist judges: the filibuster.

Called the "nuclear option" because of the explosive consequences it would have in the Senate – Frist’s plan would allow anti-choice Republican leaders to change Senate rules to prevent the filibuster of judicial nominees.

During President Bush’s first term, senators used the filibuster carefully and selectively. The Senate confirmed more than 200 of President Bush’s judicial nominees to lifetime appointments, and used the filibuster to block only 10 of his most controversial nominees.
Urge The Senate to Reject William Myers' Nomination

The U.S. Senate is gearing up for a showdown vote on the nomination of William Myers III, a former mining industry lobbyist, to be a senior federal judge. Myers is being nominated for a lifetime appointment to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Ninth Circuit decides legal disputes over the use and conservation of some of the most wild and sacred areas in the United States, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico,
Oregon and Washington. Hundreds of millions of acres of public lands, Indian reservations, and sacred sites lie in this area.

The Senate rejected Myers' nomination last year due in part to his extreme anti-environmental record, but Bush has re-nominated him in the 109th Congress, betting that a greater Republican majority will enable him to be approved this time around.

There's no denying that Myers is an extremist, having called parts of the Clean Water Act "unauthorized federal regulation of land use," and, as the top lawyer at Bush's Interior Department, consistently siding with oil industry lobbyists and other major corporate polluters.

Your action is urgently needed – Myers' nomination has cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee and is expected to come up for a full Senate vote any day now.

Tell your Senators to reject a lifetime appointment for Myers! If Myers is confirmed, he'll likely be undermining U.S. environmental laws for decades to come.

Tell Bush: Stop the importation of endangered species!

The Bush administration is proposing to allow commercial trade in endangered species for the first time in over thirty years. This radical proposal would dramatically weaken the protections for over 550 foreign species - including jaguars, elephants, and orangutans - now covered by the Endangered Species Act.

The Bush administration's proposal supports the idea of killing species in order to save them, and endorses the importation of endangered animals and body parts to benefit their conservation. But this proposal includes no standards to verify that any of the money spent on importing endangered animals or body parts actually goes to conservation, and is so vague that it practically invites fraud and illegal trade.

The illegal international trade in wildlife and wildlife products is worth billions of dollars annually. And legal trade in wildlife body parts invariably leads to increased illegal trade and poaching, creating a market for previously illegal wildlife. This proposal could lead to a resumption of the ivory trade in Africa; the capture of Asian elephants for U.S. circuses and zoos; and the importation of endangered wild parrots for the U.S. pet industry.

Please stand up for endangered species today! Tell Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton and President Bush that you oppose their proposal to allow importation of endangered species.

One World Expedition Update:

On June 3, a Russian helicopter evacuated Arctic explorers Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen from the ice and returned them to the safety of land.

Sadly, a "perfect storm" of adverse conditions - a seemingly endless field of giant pressure ridges; a relentless southward ice drift that negated much of their northward progress; half-frozen leads with ice that was too thick for them to launch their canoes, and too thin for them to ski over; 16 inches of fresh snow that made the going tremendously difficult - forced Lonnie and Eric to abandon their quest to become the first people to ever make a summer crossing of the Arctic Ocean.

But their expedition was about more than just being the first people to cross the Arctic Ocean in summer. The impetus for the expedition was to bring attention to global warming, and to inspire Americans to act. Despite the fact that they were not able to succeed in making it across the ice, their attempt inspired thousands to take action to protect the climate.

In the U.S., more than 100 million cell phones are taken out of service each year. Most of these discarded phones end up in landfills, leaking toxic metals and chemicals into the ground.

For competitive reasons, many cell phone companies today force consumers to pay for a new phone when switching service providers. This practice is both financially unfair to the consumer and bad for our environment!

Even worse, some cell phone companies that use compatible technology have installed "software locks" to prevent consumers from using their phones on competitors' systems.

Say NO to Japan's Plan to Kill Humpback Whales

Famous for serenading the seas with their haunting melodies, the humpback whale has been protected since 1966, when it was on the brink of extinction from commercial whaling. But a new threat has emerged, as media reports indicate that Japan is now seeking to resume commercial whaling of humpbacks, defying international agreements and sanctuaries under the guise of "scientific research."

Using a loophole that allows whales to be killed for scientific study, more than 25,000 whales have been killed since a worldwide ban on commercial whaling was passed by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1986. Yet it's unnecessary to kill whales in order to study them, since non-lethal alternatives already exist. What's worse, some whales remain alive up to an hour after a harpoon explodes inside them. These cruel methods, first employed over a hundred years ago, are still used today.

At the International Whaling Commission meeting beginning July 20th, the world will vote on Japan's outrageous proposal to hunt humpback whales. Several countries remain undecided and are very sensitive to external opinion. With a little pressure, they can be swayed to protect the whales and stop Japan from slaughtering them.

That's why it's critical we tell the Swiss, Danish, Chinese and South Korean Ambassadors in our countries to oppose Japan's plan to kill endangered humpback whales - before it's too late.

You Did It! Success in Protecting Pacific Corals

West Coast Seafloor Protected from Bottom Trawling

In an historic move for our nation's fisheries, the Pacific Fishery Management Council voted unanimously today to adopt Oceana's Approach to managing the seafloor off of Washington, Oregon, and California.

Three years and more than 40,000 public comments later - with over 10,000 of these comments from Care2 and ThePetitionSite members - the Fisheries Service will finally be required to protect the corals, sponges and other similar living seafloor habitat of the Pacific from senseless destruction. The Council action will protect more than 250,000 square miles of seafloor, including much of the lush living corals and sponges of Monterey Bay, from destructive bottom trawling.

The Council's action follows three years of intense collaborative work coordinated and lead by Oceana, and including environmental organizations of Natural Resources Defense Council, The Ocean Conservancy, and Environment California; recreational fishing groups United Anglers and Coastside Fishing Club, and commercial fishing group Pacific Marine Conservation Council.

The Oceana Approach identifies locations of corals, sponges, and other living seafloor animals and applies management actions to minimize the detrimental effects of bottom trawling on this lush and productive habitat. In addition to freezing the bottom trawl footprint to prevent expansion into pristine areas, the Approach protects known areas of biogenic habitat within the footprint, protects special areas such as seamounts and canyons, and calls for ongoing research and monitoring.

Victory for Whales! International Community Votes

Yesterday, the International Whaling Commission voted against a Japanese proposal to resume limited commercial whaling, and sharply criticized Japan's "scientific" whaling program, stating that Japan essentially uses science as a cover for commercial whaling.

On a strong majority vote, member countries of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) today rejected a proposal put forward by the Government of Japan to resume commercial whale hunting, which has been banned by the IWC since 1986. 29 countries voted against the Japanese proposal, 23 countries voted for it and 5 countries abstained from the vote.

A new Japanese proposal to increase "scientific" whaling also failed to gain majority support from the IWC. A resolution introduced by the Government of Australia, sharply critical of the Japanese proposal, was passed by a vote of 30 to 27 with one abstention by the Pacific Island nation of Solomon Islands. Japan has killed more than 8,000 whales under the guise of science since the commercial whaling ban.

Over 23,000 activists recently expressed their outrage to IWC member nations through ThePetitionSite.com at Japan's proposal to resume commercial whale hunting - and world leaders heard us, loud and clear. We still have work to do to end commercial and so-called "scientific" whaling, but this vote is a decisive victory for whales.

The Bush administration has asked for $8.5 million in the 2006 budget for research on a "Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator" (RNEP). This new nuclear weapon, also known as the nuclear "bunker buster," is being promoted as a useful tool in attacking deeply buried command centers or underground stores of chemical and biological weapons. But numerous scientific critiques, including one by the National Academy of Science, find that in many cases such a weapon would be ineffective. In addition, the nuclear blast and radioactive fall-out could kill millions of innocent people in surrounding areas. A single "bunker buster" would be nearly 100 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.

In the coming weeks, the Senate will consider funding for this new nuclear weapon. Please tell your Senators to reject all funding for the dangerous nuclear "bunker buster."

Protect the Yellowstone Buffalo - America's Last Wild Herd

50 million buffalo once roamed the Great Plains. But at the end of the 19th century, after millions were slaughtered, only 23 wild buffalo remained. These survivors found refuge in Yellowstone National Park, are the ancestors of America's only remaining wild herd.

But after escaping extinction over 100 years ago, the wild buffalo, an icon of the American West, is under attack again.

Facing pressure from the cattle industry, government agencies are spending millions in taxpayer money to kill the numerous wild buffalo that wander outside of Yellowstone National Park onto public grazing lands used by cattle ranchers.
These buffalo executions are justified by the excuse that the buffalo present a disease threat to domesticated cattle. This excuse is widely thought to be a thinly veiled justification for keeping buffalo off public grazing lands, which ranchers rely on for profits, by any means necessary - including killing.

Please urge your Representative to support the Yellowstone Buffalo Preservation Act (HR 2428), which proposes more humane, science-based programs to manage Yellowstone buffalo.
Take Action

Senate Rejects Anti-Nuclear Amendment - Struggle Moves to the House

On Thursday, June 30, the U.S. Senate voted 53-43 to approve funding for research into "bunker buster" nuclear weapons, as part of a $31.2 billion spending bill for energy and water projects. The full spending passed on a vote of 92-3. Care2 and ThePetitionSite members sent close to 10,000 letters to their Senators through this petition urging them to vote "no" on this funding. The vote was close, however, and the full bill now goes into negotiation between the House and the Senate over differences between them. In the House, David Hobson, a Republican from Ohio and chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees the nuclear weapons budget, once again eliminated ALL funding for these weapons.
Dirty Fishing Bycatch Destroys Marine Life

"Dirty
Fishing" Bycatch Fishing Destroys Ecosystems

Every year and estimated 300,000 marine mammals, including whales, manatees,
and dolphins are killed in "dirty fishing" practices. Additionally, 16
billion pounds of sea life is needlessly destroyed each year.

"Dirty fishing" refers to unsustainable commercial fishing practices such as bottom-trawling and indiscriminate netting. These unselective fishing practices bring up untargeted sea life, also know as bycatch, which is thrown back either dead or dying. For instance, shrimp trawling results in up to 10 pounds of bycatch for every pound of shrimp caught.

"Dirty fishing" is devastating the marine environment. Not only are millions of sea animals needlessly dying each year, but a significant amount of sea-floor habitat, such as deep sea corals and sponges, are destroyed, lessening the capacity of our seas to support life. This waste threatens the health of the entire ocean ecosystem and the coastal communities that depend on it.

This needless destruction can be mitigated. The President has submitted his budget for the next fiscal year to
Congress including roughly $25 million in funding for National Marine Fisheries Service’s observer programs and the Bycatch Reduction Initiative.
This level of funding is far from adequate to significantly reduce the environmental damage that commercial use of unselective fishing techniques does to marine mammals, fish, sea turtles, sea birds, and marine habitat.

Care2 Members are urging Congress to increase the amount of funding available
to these programs. If you would like to help, please sign our petition to
Congress at http://www.care2.com/go/z/25909

Take Action

The Supreme Court has the final say on whether to uphold and enforce -- or limit and strike down -- the laws that safeguard our nation's air, water, wildlife, and wilderness. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement means our most basic environmental laws may be in jeopardy.

As a mainstream conservative justice, Justice O'Connor often cast the decisive vote in favor of protecting environmental safeguards enjoyed by all Americans.
Supreme Court nominee may threaten environmental protections

It's official: President Bush has nominated Judge John G. Roberts, Jr. to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.

This development dramatically raises the stakes for the environment.

Given his record so far, we have reason for concern. From his seat on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Roberts was one of only two judges to argue for a review of a decision that upheld the constitutionality of key Endangered Species Act safeguards.

Roberts also demonstrated a callous attitude toward our nation's strong support for protecting threatened and endangered species. As noted today in The New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today, Roberts famously questioned whether Congress has the power to prevent the extinction of what he flippantly called "a hapless toad that, for reasons of its own, lives its entire life in California."

The Senate's decision on whether to confirm Roberts's nomination has the potential to threaten basic environmental laws almost immediately. Industry groups already have filed lawsuits raising constitutional and other challenges to a wide range of federal environmental protections. The laws under attack include the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and statutes that protect the health, safety, and rights of working families and consumers. As a Supreme Court Justice, Judge Roberts would have the power to reverse decades of progress in protecting public health and our environment.

We don't want to roll back the progress we have made in protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the wild places that are our natural heritage. The public has the right to insist that the highest court in our country be fair, balanced, and independent from powerful special interests.

Recently, we've been overwhelmed with news about political appointees manipulating, distorting, and suppressing the science on global warming - as well as on other issues such as mercury pollution and lead poisoning. Political interference in science has dangerous implications for our health, safety and environment.

In June, we learned that White House chief of staff on the Council on Environmental Quality, Phil Cooney, personally edited and distorted scientific reports, and in doing so significantly downplayed the scientific certainty on global warming. But Mr. Cooney is not a scientist - he's a lawyer who used to work as an oil industry lobbyist. After the New York Times revealed Cooney's involvement in doctoring government reports on behalf of the Bush administration, he left his job and took a position with ExxonMobil, the world’s largest oil company and leading critic of global warming science.

Then in July, scientists accused U.S. Representative Joe Barton (R-TX) of harassing and intimidating prominent climate scientists over their findings on global warming.

With the scientific facts and the impacts of global warming clear, doesn't it make you wonder whose interests our government officials are looking out for?

Prevent the Misuse of Antibiotics

The Preservation of Antibiotics for Human Treatment Act (S. 2508) will phase out the routine feeding of medically important antibiotics to healthy livestock and poultry. The poultry and livestock industries have been major culprits in the overuse of antibiotics. The misuse of antibiotics is leading to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which are causing increasing numbers of serious, difficult-to-treat illnesses in humans.

Healthy farm animals are routinely fed antibiotics to promote growth and compensate for unsanitary conditions, particularly at crowded factory farms. This "nontherapeutic" use of antibiotics in healthy pigs, poultry, and beef cattle constitutes an estimated 70% of all antibiotics used in the United States.

S. 2508 will phase-out the nontherapeutic use of eight types of antibiotics in animal agriculture that are also used in human medicine, or are so closely related to human use drugs that they trigger cross-resistance. By targeting the nontherapeutic use of antibiotics, the bill properly allows sick animals to receive necessary treatment.

The act also bans the use in poultry of Cipro-like drugs called fluoroquinolones. In October 2000, the FDA proposed to ban poultry fluoroquinolones because their use undercuts the effectiveness of Cipro and related drugs in treating certain forms of severe food poisoning in humans.

Antibiotics Victory! FDA Bans Medically Important Antibiotic in Poultry

After a five-year battle, the FDA finally banned Cipro-like antibiotics for use in poultry. These drugs, like Bayer's Bactril, are used in people to treat food poisoning and bacterial infections.

This action is the first time that FDA has ever withdrawn an agricultural antibiotic from the market because of concerns about antibiotic resistance affecting human health. The ban was proposed in October 2000, but took nearly five years to finalize because of numerous procedural delays created by drug manufacturers.

According to the Keep Antibiotics Working coalition, the FDA has shown that use of Baytril in poultry reduces the effectiveness of Cipro in treating Campylobacter, one of the most common causes of severe bacterial food poisoning. The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that resistance to Cipro in Campylobacter in humans has risen to 21 percent as of 2002; when Cipro-like drugs were first approved for use in poultry in 1995, such resistance was negligible.

The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the U.S. - about 25 million pounds annually - are routinely fed to poultry, swine, and beef cattle not to treat illness but rather to promote slightly faster growth and to compensate for overcrowded and unhealthy conditions in concentrated animal feeding operations. More than half of these drugs are identical or similar to antibiotics that are important in human medicine. Use of antibiotic feed additives spurs the development and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria in our food supply and the environment.

Tell Congress: Protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - update

Even as relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina are getting underway, some in Congress have chosen to exploit this national tragedy to renew their misguided calls for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"Sometimes it takes a crisis to realize we've got to be more dependent on our own resources," Rep. Capito told the Charleston Daily Mail.

Rep. Joe Barton, Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, was also quick to call for drilling in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, arguing that "We could be drilling in Alaska right now."

But short-sighted expolitation of the Refuge would do nothing to alleviate problems at the pump. Oil and gas from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge wouldn't hit the market for 10 years and even then would provide less than a one-year supply.

What drilling would do is devastate crucial habitat. The Arctic Refuge is such a special place because it is home to countless wildlife -- from the great predators like the polar bear to the Porcupine Herd, one of the largest caribou herds in North America.

The U.S. House of Representatives is slated to vote Thursday, September 29, on legislation (H.R. 3824) sponsored by Representative Richard Pombo (R-CA) that would gut the Endangered Species Act. Rep.
New assault on Arctic Refuge has begun

The House Resources committee voted on a new energy bill yesterday that authorizes oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge and opening our coastlines to offshore oil drilling.

This bill will now go to the House floor, and we're going to need all the help we can get to protect the Arctic Refuge from the devastation of oil drilling.

Congress is using every legislative vehicle it can to advance their unpopular energy policy initiatives by exploiting the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. But there is no compelling reason to drill in the Arctic Refuge other than oil industry greed. Geologists estimate that only a few months' supply of oil lies beneath the Refuge and it will take ten years before any reaches the market. But in the meantime, the effects of drilling on wildlife, including polar bears, caribou, and wolves, could be deadly.

We're now fighting a two-front war on the Refuge - the Budget Reconciliation Bill, which will be voted on next month, and Rep. Pombo's new energy bill. Last spring, the House passed their version of the budget bill by only three votes, and the Senate by only five. Big Oil, Vice President Dick Cheney, House Majority Leader Tom Delay, and Interior Secretary Gale Norton are pulling out all stops to again prevail.

Defenders of Wildlife has been working tirelessly to flood Congress with phone calls from citizens opposing drilling; run educational ads in Congressional swing states; and organize thousands of activists for last week's successful Arctic Refuge Action Day in coalition with other groups.

In an outrageous proposal for the House draft budget reconciliation bill, Rep. The total area protected from the chainsaw equals 5 million acres, twice the size of Yellowstone Park and equal to 6300 of New York’s Central Park. This total includes new and previous protection areas, plus special no logging zones.

ForestEthics, Greenpeace and Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter have worked toward this solution for almost a decade, using tactics that ranged from blockades to boycotts to boardroom negotiations, all in a bid to protect as much of the Great Bear Rainforest as possible.

Our Beaches at Risk From Drilling - You Can Help

Every summer American families flock to our nation's beaches. In addition to the natural beauty and escape that our coasts provide, these beloved vacation spots are the backbone of our strong coastal economies that generate billions of dollars through tourism, recreation and commercial fishing.

Right now, some in Congress are considering lifting the 25-year-old moratorium that protects our Atlantic and Pacific coasts and waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico from new oil and gas drilling.

Sign this petition to urge Congress to support the current moratorium on offshore oil and gas drilling, and to do everything in their power to protect America's beaches for families to enjoy for summers to come.

The Bush administration recently announced its proposal to sell more than 300,000 acres of national forests and public lands to raise money for the federal treasury.

The land sales could total more than $1 billion and would be the largest sale of forestland in decades.

Forest Service officials say the sales are needed to raise $800 million over the next five years to pay for schools and roads in rural counties hurt by logging cutbacks on federal land.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., called the plan a “terrible idea based on a misguided sense of priorities.” While increasing military funding by 6.9%, the Bush administration cut education spending by 3.8% in this FY2007 budget. And now it wants to sell our natural heritage to pick up the slack?

Selling public land to pay down the deficit would be a shortsighted and irresponsible shift in federal land-management policy. The monetary gains would be temporary, but the land would be gone forever. There are better ways to fund public schooling.

ExxonMobil is swimming in cash...while polar bears are drowning in the Arctic.

ExxonMobil raked in over $35 billion in profits in 2005, and another $8.4 billion in the first quarter of 2006. But where are Exxon's priorities?

ExxonMobil has given its former CEO Lee Raymond a retirement package worth almost $400 million. Yet, it still refuses to pay punitive damages for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill that killed birds, fish, sea otters and other wildlife – some of which have yet to recover.

ExxonMobil is the sole major oil company to remain in Arctic Power, the lobbying group whose only purpose is to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to toxic oil drilling. The Arctic Refuge is home to caribou, millions of migratory birds, and other wildlife. It is also one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's remaining polar bears.

In the past five years, ExxonMobil has spent nearly $37 million on lobbyists and millions more in campaign contributions to relentlessly push its anti-wildlife agenda and fight efforts to curb global warming – the same warming that's melting sea ice and leaving walrus calves and polar bears to starve and drown.

Tell ExxonMobil's CEO to stop pushing for oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge; to withdraw its support of the pro-drilling Arctic Power lobbying firm; and to start investing in renewable energy for the future. Let ExxonMobil know that until they mend their anti-wildlife ways, you will be boycotting their gasoline!
Take Action

Yet Japanese whalers continue to kill whales in horribly cruel fashion, harpooning them with explosive tips and then dragging them onto whale ships.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is recommending that manatees be downlisted from endangered to threatened status on the state level.

Last year was the second highest manatee mortality year on record. Just in the last five years, 1682 manatees have died in Florida waters and of those, 398 were killed by boats. That is almost an 18% increase over the previous five-year period. Furthermore, state scientists estimate the manatee population could drop by half in the next 50 years because of habitat loss, red tide poisoning and boat collisions. The population is far from stable.

Manatees are poised to be downlisted regardless of how they are faring in the wild because of a calculated effort by special interest groups opposed to boat speed zones and restrictions on development.

Later this summer, the FFWCC will vote on this issue. If the commission approves, restrictions that have kept in check boat speeds, seawalls, docks and waterfront home-building could be diluted or eliminated. Urge Governor Bush to take a stand and keep protections for the manatee in place!
Take Action

But this year, Republicans in Congress have introduced legislation that would weaken the federal safeguards against offshore drilling that have protected our coast for 25 years.

One of California's own state representatives, Richard Pombo, is pushing such legislation in the House, while Republicans have simultaneously introduced nearly identical legislation in the Senate.

Over the last 100 years, the world's human population has quadrupled. And at current rates of growth we will add more people to the planet in the next 50 years than we did during the first 500,000 years of human history!

Human population growth is a critical environmental issue. It places enormous pressure on limited natural resources and exacerbates many environmental problems including deforestation, fisheries depletion, water scarcity, pollution and loss of biodiversity and habitat -- which affect the health of all species.

By providing access to basic healthcare and education, international family planning is one of most cost-effective ways to help countries voluntarily reduce population pressures, improve maternal and child health, protect the health of our environment, and ensure our children’s future well-being.

Unfortunately, as unmet need for family planning programs continues to rise drastically, U.S. funding has plummeted. The President's budget this year requested just $357 million for
international family planning - an 18 percent reduction from last year's request!

This Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to show your support for international family planning. Mothers represent a promise for the future of our children – a future with love, a clean environment, good health and education.

Break America’s Oil Addiction

America consumes over 19 million barrels of oil per day. More than 70% of that is for transportation; we burn most of our oil as gasoline in our cars, trucks and SUVs. Like any addiction, our oil dependence has serious consequences. We are at war for oil. Tailpipe emissions contribute to global warming. Oil extraction destroys forests and communities in countries like Nigeria, Colombia and Ecuador.

It's time for change... It's time to break our addiction.

Oil permeates our lives - from the cars we drive to heat for our homes, to the plastics in our computers and offices. So where do we start?

Let's start by Jumpstarting the auto industry: the single largest cause of our oil addiction comes from passenger vehicles. Ford Motor Company's vehicles guzzle more gas than any other automaker in the country. Ford's global warming emissions threaten our environment while rising gas prices threaten our economy. That's not American innovation. That's just bad business.

We demand that our nation's leaders, both civic and corporate, make a real commitment for change. It's time to take action, starting with automakers like Ford Motor Company.

Join us in a 12 Step Program to break our dependence on oil. We've admitted that we have a problem. It's time to start the solution.

Take Action

Several U.S. Senators, led by Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), are trying to block plans for "Cape Wind," the nation's first offshore wind farm in Cape Cod, MA. The wind farm would create jobs and meet 75% of the electricity needs of Cape Cod and surrounding islands, helping to reduce fossil fuel consumption and cut global warming pollution from power plants.

But despite the huge potential benefits, Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) backs a bill that would effectively halt the proposed construction. The 130-turbine, 24-square-mile cluster of windmills would be about 8 miles from Kennedy's home in Hyannis Port.

Ted Kennedy and other rich homeowners just don't want their view spoiled.

Laura Bush, Please Protect Mother Polar Bears!

Our polar bears - and their cubs - are in big trouble. Scientists say that global warming is pushing them to the very brink of extinction.
Now, as if that's not bad enough, President Bush continues to push for harmful drilling in one of the places most important to denning polar bears - the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Studies show that the noise from oil exploration and drilling can disturb and frighten denning mother polar bears, causing mother bears to abandon their dens and leaving their cubs to die.

White House photo by Tina Hager

According to a recent study, global warming could push polar bears to extinction within 25 years. Ironically, oil from the Arctic Refuge would not even begin to affect the price of a gallon of gasoline for at least 20 years after the Refuge is first drilled. Even then, it would lower gas prices by only about a penny per gallon.

Making sure our polar bears are around for our children is worth more than a penny a gallon.

President Bush may not listen to the American public's opposition to drilling, but maybe he'll listen to his wife. As an educator and a mother, Laura Bush should understand the devastating impact of oil drilling on polar bear mothers and their cubs.

Furthermore, oil exploration in a national park may be a violation of Belize’s international treaty obligations under the Ramsar convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity and constitutes an incursion into indigenous traditional lands, violating the rights of the Maya and Garifuna communities as outlined by the Inter American Commission on Human Rights.

By now it's no secret that some politicians in Washington will stop at nothing to open the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling -including holding crucial legislation hostage to push this massively unpopular plan through Congress.

Whether it's the federal budget, funding for our troops overseas, or, most recently, legislation that would make our cars and trucks more energy efficient, no piece of legislation is safe from their dirty tricks.
Protect Chesapeake Bay: Save the Menhaden

Virginia Governor Tim Kaine will soon make a decision that will impact the entire ecosystem health of Chesapeake Bay, the biggest estuary in North America and the third largest in the world.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission recently decided to cap the industrial harvest of menhaden, to protect the species while research is conducted into the impact of the bay harvest on striped bass and other menhaden predators.

Often called the most important fish in the sea, menhaden are a vital source of food for a wide variety of fish including striped bass and bluefish, and are crucial to the businesses and local economies that these fisheries support. Second only to oysters, menhaden act as a filter for bay waters, feeding on plankton and decaying plant matter.

Alarmingly, recent studies indicate the overall number of menhaden is near historic lows.

Governor Kaine is currently deciding whether or not to implement the Atlantic States Fisheries Commission’s decision. If the Governor does not take action, Virginia could be found out of compliance by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, triggering a potential moratorium on the entire menhaden fishery.

This issue is about more than one species of fish, it’s about an entire ecosystem in jeopardy. Please tell Virginia Governor Tim Kaine that menhaden matter and to implement the cap.
Take Action

Canada: Strengthen Regulations of Toxins!

Canadians are polluted with a toxic mix of harmful chemicals. And a new study just released by Environmental Defence shows that our kids are full of these toxic chemicals too.

This is the first time the level of contamination in youth has been looked at in Canada. In some cases, the concentration of some of the chemicals were higher than their parents.

It's time we said enough is enough and did something about the thousands of chemicals that are dumped into the Canadian environment and our
bodies.

And now is the perfect time for positive change. Canada's pollution problems stem from the weak and ineffective regulation of toxic chemicals under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). The opportunity exists now to address the shortfalls of this Act during its mandatory five-year review.

Environmental Defence is calling upon the federal government to acknowledge the evidence of human contamination revealed in the Toxic Nation studies. We want them to strengthen the regulation of toxic chemicals in Canada by:

Setting aggressive timelines for the virtual elimination of toxic chemicals

Making industry accountable for its chemicals

Regulating toxic chemicals in consumer products and,

Reducing pollution in the Great Lakes Basin

Sign this petition to urge Minister of the Environment Rona Ambrose to strengthen the regulation of toxic chemicals in Canada by strengthening CEPA.
Strengthen Protection of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem

A beautiful, remote string of islands, reefs and atolls lies some 120 nautical miles west of the main Hawaiian Islands. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) encompass close to 70% of our country's coral reefs, including some of our most pristine shallow-water reefs. This ecosystem is an irreplaceable national treasure.

Endangered green sea turtles, the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, and a myriad of bird species rely heavily on the islands and surrounding waters for survival. But there are serious threats to this incredible ecosystem. Lobster and finfish fishing, proposed coral harvests, and marine debris all threaten the fragile island chain.

The federal government is now considering designating the area a National Marine Sanctuary. We need your help and comments today to ensure that the designation will include the strongest possible protections for these islands and their magnificent ecosystem.

Success! Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are Protected!

Today, President Bush created the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, creating the largest marine reserve on the planet with an area of almost 140,000 square miles, including 4,500 miles of coral reef habit.

Endangered green sea turtles, the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, and a myriad of bird species rely heavily on the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and surrounding waters for survival. The establishment of this new marine reserve is a huge success, and one that many conservationists and activists have been advocating for years.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands ecosystem has been under consideration for marine sanctuary status since 2000. But today's designation of the area as a National Monument means that the islands and the marine life around them are immediately protected, and that protection is permanent, not subject to periodic review as it would be under sactuary status.

Support America's first offshore wind farm - update

US lawmakers unveiled a deal that would allow the nation's first offshore wind farm in Nantucket Sound off Massachusetts to proceed over the state governor's objections.

The agreement is being viewed as a victory for supporters of the wind-energy proposal.

The bill would give the Coast Guard the authority to mandate “reasonable” changes to the Cape Wind project only if it finds that the wind turbines would pose a hazard to navigation, emergency communications, or rescue operations.

The compromise will allow an important wind project to move ahead without political interference and prevents local special interests from torpedoing a reasonable and much-needed energy project.

The agreement closes one chapter in the political debate over the project, but the controversy surrounding it is unlikely to dissipate. We may still need more help from our dedicated Care2 activists.

Tell Kimberly-Clark: Use Recycled Paper Instead of Old Forests!

Did you know that over two acres of ancient trees in the Boreal Forest are killed every minute? Did you also know that many of these trees end up in landfills as disposable paper products such as Kleenex, Scott, Huggies, Pull-Ups, Depends, and Kotex?

As regular consumers of household paper products, we should have a say where that paper comes from. Sign this petition and tell Kimberly-Clark to use post-consumer recycled content, not ancient forests!

Between 15 and 30 percent of Kimberly-Clarks' pulp fiber comes from logging of the Boreal Forests in Canada. This forest encircles the far Northern latitudes of North America, Europe, and Asia and plays a vital role in slowing climate change, keeping our air clean, and producing more freshwater than any other system in the world.

The Boreal Forest is one of the last of the great ancient forests we have, and companies like Kimberly-Clark don't want us to know it is being logged, and fast!

Companies like Kimberly-Clark should be using recycled post-consumer material rather than natural resources. When new paper products are created from post-consumer material such as the paper that goes in the recycling bin, we all come up winners. New materials are kept out of the landfill, ancient trees continue to grow, and big companies can still support their employees.

Support Renewable Energy on Native American Land

In 1992 Congress adopted a production tax credit as part of the Energy Policy Act, giving tax breaks to producers of wind power and renewable energy. Ironically Native Americans, one of the poorest communities that could most benefit from this act, were excluded from its incentives.

Now we're calling on Congress to include Native Americans in tax breaks for renewable energy production, like wind power.

The export of rural wind power can provide the basis for a sustainable reservation economy that brings revenue and employment to impoverished rural tribal communities. And unlike fossil fuel development, a wind project can bring in a 25 year revenue stream from the sale of energy, green tags, and other incentives, without leaving behind degraded air, polluted water, flooded lands, or gaping holes in the ground.

This is a win-win situation for Native Americans, for our economy, and for our environment.

As Congress now debates the Production Tax Credit, call on them to extend its terms to create long-term incentives for ALL producers of renewable energy in the U.S. -- including Native Americans!
Take Action

Keep Tuna Safe For Families and For Dolphins

Tell the FDA and EPA to to improve mercury testing so we can keep tuna safe for our families and for dolphins. With more scrutiny over tuna sold to families in the U.S., we can better protect dolphins from harassment and death through commercial fishing practices, and children from brain damage caused by mercury exposure.

More than half of the tuna consumed by American families comes from non-U.S. producers. But some of these producers -- particularly in Ecuador and Mexico -- use practices that can hurt or kill dolphins and catch tuna with increased mercury levels.

In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, large, mature yellowfin tuna often swim with pods of dolphins -- a relationship that's exploited by some commercial fishers using purse-seine nets that ensnare tuna and dolphins alike. Since the late 1950s, approximately seven million dolphins have died from this practice.

The practice poses an obvious risk to dolphins, but the large tuna that swim with dolphins often contain the highest levels of mercury. So this practice not only harms dolphins, it also poses a risk to people who are unlucky enough to eat tuna caught in such a manner.

Send a message to the Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration to improve mercury testing so we can keep tuna safe for our families and for dolphins.
Take Action
