SUPPORT A LIVING WAGE FOR U.S. FARM WORKERS

While global food giants like Yum Brands -- parent company of Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut -- rake in massive profits, farmworkers labor long hours every day for rock-bottom wages. These workers have no healthcare and no overtime pay. Yet, these food giants drive prices lower and lower, forcing growers to reduce their only elastic variable -- farmworkers' salaries and benefits.

To earn just $50 in a day, a farmworker must pick two tons of tomatoes. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a community based farmworker group in Florida, demands that pickers be paid one penny more per pound of tomatoes, a modest measure that would almost double the workers' daily pay!

Those who grow and labor for our food deserve to make a living wage that allows them to see a doctor when they need to, live in adequate housing, and send their children to school!

Tell Yum Brands (which owns Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut) to pay farmworkers ONE PENNY MORE for their backbreaking labor!
Take Action

As identity theft scandals mount, it seems as if it’s only a matter of time before virtually everyone will fall victim to this insidious form of fraud.

That’s not as far-fetched as it sounds. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that 9.9 million Americans are victimized by identity theft every year. That’s 19 new ID theft victims every minute.

Nearly every week we hear about new security breaches at companies like ChoicePoint, Lexis-Nexis, Bank of America and numerous universities. Recent security breaches from these sources put more than two million Americans at risk of having their identities stolen by crooks.

Congress has finally taken the first step to provide consumers with basic safeguards to protect our personal information and prevent identity theft. There are several bills pending in the U.S. Congress that seek to:

Require information brokers to enforce tight security practices to keep your data safe;

Mandate that companies notify you if your information has been compromised; and

Limit the widespread use and display of Social Security numbers that puts your identity at risk.

Act now! Urge your Congressional Representatives to enact strong identity theft protection legislation!
Take Action

After several years of negotiations and a boycott, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and fast-food industry leader Taco Bell Corporation have announced a historic agreement that will help alleviate poverty among thousands of farm workers. Thank you so much for all of your support for the Florida tomato pickers. Care2 members' support of the CIW through Oxfam was instrumental in achieving this landmark agreement.

In the U.S., more than 100 million cell phones are taken out of service each year. Most of these discarded phones end up in landfills, leaking toxic metals and chemicals into the ground.

For competitive reasons, many cell phone companies today force consumers to pay for a new phone when switching service providers. This practice is both financially unfair to the consumer and bad for our environment!

Help Stop Big Tobacco's Sweetheart Deal!

Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice tried to let Big Tobacco off the hook to the tune of $120 billion. At the very last minute in its tobacco lawsuit, the Justice Department suddenly slashed how much it wants the industry to pay for programs to help the nation's 45 million smokers quit. Profits and politics came before public health.

The next two weeks are absolutely critical. The judge in the case has set a deadline of June 25 for the government to tell her exactly what reforms to impose on Big Tobacco. This document will tell us once and for all whose side the Bush Administration is on: The People or Big Tobacco.

Big Tobacco CEOs testify at the 1994 Waxman hearings that "nicotine is not addictive."<?font>

We need your help to pressure the Administration to restore full funding for the quit-smoking program and support other strong reforms - like programs to prevent kids from ever starting to smoke and stiff fines if Big Tobacco continues to addict kids.

The tobacco industry's campaign contributions have bought incredible influence with the Bush Administration. But we've been able to stop them before. And we'll do it again this time - with your help!

Take action to make sure Big Tobacco is held accountable. Tell President Bush and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales not to let Big Tobacco off the hook!

Help Make Trade Fair for Central America!

It has been one year since the US and Central American governments signed the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).

But due to public opposition from activists throughout the Americas, the Bush Administration and Congressional leadership have been unable to bring it to a vote.

Until now.

The Bush Administration has stepped up their campaign to get CAFTA passed, and the latest word is that the US House and Senate will try to bring it to a vote before the July 4th recess.

Increased trade has the potential to reduce poverty and encourage development. But CAFTA is the wrong approach. Here's the problem: Free trade agreements like CAFTA assume a level playing field among countries. But in reality, these trade agreements often exacerbate inequality through unfair trade rules and double standards, thus keeping people in poverty. In fact, implementation of NAFTA has actually increased poverty among small farmers in Mexico. And Oxfam's analysis shows that CAFTA is likely to create more poverty in Central America - especially among poor farmers.

Please email your Representative and Senators today. Urge him or her to vote NO on CAFTA and make their position public.
Just yesterday, President Bush criticized opponents of CAFTA - the Central American Free Trade Agreement - as "economic isolationists" while he now struggles to win votes in Congress for the treaty. Farmers in both the US and Central America are speaking out about the potentially damaging effects of CAFTA on their jobs, their communities, and their lives.

Members of the US Congress from both sides of the aisle have been joined by non-governmental organizations, labor unions, producers groups, environmental groups, faith groups and others in the US and in Central America to campaign against CAFTA. Only three Central American countries have been able to ratify the trade pact and did so amid widespread public protest with heavy military and police presence. Other countries have delayed consideration in response to mounting opposition. The trade agreement is under consideration by both the House and the Senate and is expected to come up for a vote in the US Congress before the end of the summer.

Hey Cell Phone Companies - Can You Hear Us Now?

Millions of cell phone users who yearn to switch to a better cell phone company don't - even if they would get better service, better reception, and lower monthly rates. What's stopping them? So called "early termination fees" the giant cell phone companies charge customers who want to change cell phone users. These unfair penalties can run as high at $400 per phone, and not only eliminate consumer choice, but also prevent competition. And that means poorer service and higher rates for all customers.

It must stop - but giant cell phone companies are doing everything they can to continue their unfair practices! State consumer advocates favor eliminating these penalties because they violate the law in their states, and in some states there are lawsuits challenging the legality of termination fees. However, the giant cell phone companies are using their financial muscle to pressure the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) into issuing an order that would override state law and lock customers into these harmful penalties indefinitely.

If the cell phone giants get their way, cell phone users will remain at their mercy because these companies will have little incentive to improve their service and lower their rates. But we can stop them! Let the FCC know that you're fed up with unreasonable cell phone penalties and that you want real freedom to choose the best cell phone service provider.

The FCC is accepting public comments until August 5 about whether these illegitimate penalties should continue. Sign our petition and tell the FCC that you want an end to cell phone cancellation penalties.

Take Action

Late in the evening on June 30, 2005 the Senate narrowly approved CAFTA - voting 54-45 in favor of the agreement. While we are disappointed in this outcome it is still worth noting that 12 GOP senators broke ranks to vote against the agreement.

Protect the Innocent Victims of Asbestos Poisoning

Asbestos manufacturers have known since the 1920's that their product injures and kills people exposed to it, yet they kept the deadly nature of their product a secret. Hundreds of thousands of workers and consumers have died or will die from diseases that result from asbestos exposure.

So how is Congress responding to these victims? By proposing legislation that would shield asbestos manufacturers from lawsuits and deny justice and fair compensation for the innocent victims of asbestos poisoning, depriving them of their day in court.

The trust fund that would be established to compensate victims under the so-called Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act (FAIR Act) is unfair, underfunded, unworkable and unconstitutional. It would make asbestos victims overcome huge new hurdles to prove that they are eligible - and if they are able to do this, they would then be forced to wait years for the compensation they deserve. And in a particularly outrageous provision of this bill, many who were exposed to asbestos in the World Trade Center collapse on 9/11 would be ineligible for compensation.

One after another, the scandals emerge revealing Wal-Mart's ruthless campaign against workers' rights.

When Wal-Mart employees attempt to stand up for themselves and try to form a union, they face threats, propaganda, discrimination, intimidation, and even firings.

Is this any way to treat employees who just want to negotiate for better wages, more affordable health care, and basic protections on the job?

It's a struggle of epic proportions: 1.3 million employees versus Wal-Mart. College students, single parents, the elderly—barely making enough to cross the poverty line, competing against the world's largest employer and corporation—raking in $10,000,000,000 in profits last year. Clearly, Wal-Mart can afford to do the right thing and treat its workers with the respect they deserve. The question is, will it?

Urge the USDA to to keep U.S. beef safe from mad cow disease!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed in June that a cow born and bred in the United States had tested positive for mad cow disease. This was the second confirmed case of mad cow in the United States. The animal was originally suspected of having the disease last November, but the USDA failed to use the best available tests to diagnose the case for seven months.

This is a wake-up call to American consumers. We need swift and decisive action from federal regulators to ensure that the U.S. beef supply remains safe, and recommend that the USDA test all cattle over 20 months of age for mad cow disease.

USDA claims it can measure the extent of the mad cow risk because it tests the highest risk animals – approximately 1% of all cattle slaughtered each year. But USDA's surveillance and testing program is so secretive that the public has no way of knowing whether they are targeting high-risk or low-risk animals, or if their methods are based on sound science.

We must act sooner rather than later. If people eat beef from an animal infected with mad cow disease, they are at risk of contracting the incurable brain-wasting disorder, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The United Kingdom illustrates what can happen when regulators are slow to react; in that country an outbreak of mad cow disease resulted in millions of cattle being destroyed, beef exports being blocked for many years, and 147 human deaths.

Urge the USDA to take immediate action to keep the U.S. food supply safe from mad cow disease.

Help Make Trade Fair for Central America! - update

International aid organization Oxfam expressed concern today at the midnight passage by the US Congress of the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Central American countries and the Dominican Republic (DR-CAFTA), as the agreement threatens to throw many poor farmers in Central America and the Dominican Republic into deeper poverty. But Oxfam pointed out that passage of the agreement by the narrowest of margins, more than a year after it was signed, indicates how little support there is for this trade agreement in the United States.

Only after many months of intense lobbying efforts by the White House involving backroom deal-making and partisan pressure was the agreement passed in the House of Representatives by two votes. "In forcing passage of an unpopular trade agreement, the administration chose to ignore widespread concerns raised by many members of Congress and their constituents, as well as by farmers, trade unions, and church and community groups in the US, Central America and the Dominican Republic," stated Stephanie Weinberg, trade policy advisor with Oxfam America. "Whatever the spin, DR-CAFTA will institutionalize an uneven playing field instead of establishing fair and equitable rules for trade."

DR-CAFTA rigs the rules in favor of the interests of transnational companies. While the agreement provides virtually no new US market access to developing countries (with the limited exception of textiles), it extends monopoly rights for international pharmaceutical companies, thereby limiting marketing of generic medicines, and prohibits governments from using policy tools designed to ensure that investment provides maximum benefit to local communities. Furthermore, DR-CAFTA requires these developing countries to open their markets to the dumping of US rice and other commodities and to forbid use of adequate safeguards to ensure food and livelihood security and rural development. DR-CAFTA also blatantly ignores the fact that US agribusiness receives extensive subsidies and domestic supports, estimated to be around $24 billion this year alone, making it impossible for Central American and Dominican farmers to compete.

President Bush signs CAFTA into law

Today, President Bush signed into law the controversial Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week by only two votes. Trade unions, fair trade activists, citizens from both the United States and Central America, and nonprofits such as Oxfam America organized strong opposition to the treaty.

The regional trade agreement will require the developing countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic to open their markets to dumping of U.S. rice and other commodities and forbid use of adequate safeguards to ensure food and livelihood security and rural development. The agreement also blatantly ignores the fact that US farmers receive extensive subsidies and domestic supports, estimated to be around $24 billion this year alone. DR-CAFTA imposes strict new rules that extend the monopoly held by brand-name pharmaceuticals, which will limit generic competition and reduce access to affordable medicines in the future. The trade agreement also provides special rights and privileges to foreign investors that can create major new liabilities to governments and undermine efforts to protect public health, the environment, and workplace safety.

"No matter the spin, DR-CAFTA is a bad deal for millions of farmers, workers, and consumers in Central America and the Dominican Republic," says Stephanie Weinberg, Trade Policy Advisor at Oxfam. "The U.S. should do better if it wants to promote peace, political and economic security in this region that has struggled with poverty and inequality, and the resulting instability, for so long."

Tell Wal-Mart to Stop Discriminating Against Women

Wal-Mart currently faces the largest class-action sex discrimination lawsuit in American history.

Plaintiffs in the Dukes v. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. case have provided evidence that women working in Wal-Mart stores are paid less than their male counterparts for comparable work in every region of the country and in most job categories. What’s worse, data show that the pay gap between men and women gets worse over time, and that women get promoted to management roles at Wal-Mart at a much slower rate than men.

As the world's largest corporation and America's largest private sector employer, Wal-Mart clearly has some explaining to do.

But rather than address the serious issues raised in the sex discrimination lawsuit, the company has aggressively fought the charges, even refusing to implement recommendations of its own diversity task force back in 1998. Tellingly, Wal-Mart disbanded the task force in 1999; and the percentage of women in management positions declined at the company in the two years that followed.

It's time to demand that CEO Lee Scott take concrete and measurable steps to end the systematic discrimination against women at Wal-Mart Stores.

People with disabilities, young and old, used to be shamefully ignored by our society and warehoused in institutions.
Tell Congress: Protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - update

Even as relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina are getting underway, some in Congress have chosen to exploit this national tragedy to renew their misguided calls for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"Sometimes it takes a crisis to realize we've got to be more dependent on our own resources," Rep. Capito told the Charleston Daily Mail.

Rep. Joe Barton, Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, was also quick to call for drilling in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, arguing that "We could be drilling in Alaska right now."

But short-sighted expolitation of the Refuge would do nothing to alleviate problems at the pump. Oil and gas from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge wouldn't hit the market for 10 years and even then would provide less than a one-year supply.

What drilling would do is devastate crucial habitat. The Arctic Refuge is such a special place because it is home to countless wildlife -- from the great predators like the polar bear to the Porcupine Herd, one of the largest caribou herds in North America.

Tell Wal-Mart Enough is Enough - update

"Gosh, I don't think of us as being anti-union..."

Those are the latest words from Lee Scott, the CEO of Wal-Mart, who is notorious for his approach to workers' rights. Mr. Scott obviously doesn't recall the great lengths to which his company goes to prevent employees from standing up for themselves. When Wal-Mart employees try to form a union, they often face threats, propaganda, discrimination, intimidation, and even firings. Is this any way to treat employees who just want to negotiate for better wages, more affordable health care, and basic protections on the job?

New employees at Wal-Mart are often indoctrinated against unions the moment they're hired. During orientation Wal-Mart reportedly forces associates and management to:

Watch anti-union videos,

Read a section in the employee manual against unions, and

Learn the number of the hotline to call if they suspect a fellow employee of supporting a union.

Mr. Scott said: "In this company... you can talk to Lee Scott. You can talk to whoever you want to about what is happening. ...You can get your issue resolved." Let's take him up on this invitation. Tell the world's largest employer it's time to put an end to its outrageous anti-union behavior!

Two-thirds of all U.S. households today don't have high-speed Internet access - either because private Internet service providers won't offer it in their area, or because it’s just too expensive.

That's why hundreds of communities have taken matters into their own hands, offering less expensive high-speed wireless Internet access over public networks to connect consumers, schools, libraries and businesses to the Internet at prices they can afford. But these wireless networks use public airwaves that are in short supply.

And now, Congress is getting set to consider legislation that would sell our public airwaves to big corporate interests, and in the process prevent communities from using them to offer low-cost wireless Internet access to their less affluent residents. If passed, the legislation would allow the telecomm industry to retain total control over the market for Internet services.

The production of just one gold ring produces 20 tons of mine waste.

Toxic chemicals such as cyanide and mercury that are used in producing gold have polluted drinking water supplies, contaminated farmland, and harmed the health of workers and communities. Gold mining operations can also leave a trail of social destruction, displacing communities
from their homelands against their will and destroying traditional livelihoods.

This is the real price of gold.

requests from concerned people like you, and have staked out a
leadership position on this important issue. Others jewelry companies
are lagging behind and you can help them to catch up.

When you sign this No Dirty Gold Pledge, we will show jewelers that thousands of

"It's great to work for Wal-Mart," says Garth Brooks, the legendary country music star who appeared in Wal-Mart's holiday ad campaign. It's taken almost ten years of pressure, negotiation, tremendous effort and lots of help from you, but it's finally official: the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement has been approved by the government of British Columbia!

The total area protected from the chainsaw equals 5 million acres, twice the size of Yellowstone Park and equal to 6300 of New York’s Central Park. This total includes new and previous protection areas, plus special no logging zones.

ForestEthics, Greenpeace and Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter have worked toward this solution for almost a decade, using tactics that ranged from blockades to boycotts to boardroom negotiations, all in a bid to protect as much of the Great Bear Rainforest as possible.

This agreement represents hundreds of thousands of hours of dirt-under-the-fingernails work by one of the most unexpected alliances in Canadian history.
Don't Let North Carolina Become A Trash Dump!

North Carolina is becoming a hot spot for other states
to dump their trash.

Currently in North Carolina, Brunswick,
Camden, Columbus, Hyde, Richmond and Scotland Counties are all
considering proposals for new landfills that would permanently
receive trash from other states. Send the below letter and tell
North Carolina's leaders you don't want our state to become a
trash can for the entire East Coast!

Importing trash is a short term revenue fix for these rural
communities, but it does not get to the heart of economic woes
in these counties. It does, however, saddle each community with
a potentially expensive, future environmental problem. If all
the proposed landfills are built, North Carolina will become the
fourth largest waste-importing state in the nation. To turn our state into a
destination for waste is to turn away from a vision of a strong,
beautiful, and healthy North Carolina.

Tell ExxonMobil: Protect Polar Bears, Not Profits!

ExxonMobil is swimming in cash...while polar bears are drowning in the Arctic.

ExxonMobil raked in over $35 billion in profits in 2005, and another $8.4 billion in the first quarter of 2006. But where are Exxon's priorities?

ExxonMobil has given its former CEO Lee Raymond a retirement package worth almost $400 million. Yet, it still refuses to pay punitive damages for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill that killed birds, fish, sea otters and other wildlife – some of which have yet to recover.

ExxonMobil is the sole major oil company to remain in Arctic Power, the lobbying group whose only purpose is to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to toxic oil drilling. The Arctic Refuge is home to caribou, millions of migratory birds, and other wildlife. It is also one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's remaining polar bears.

In the past five years, ExxonMobil has spent nearly $37 million on lobbyists and millions more in campaign contributions to relentlessly push its anti-wildlife agenda and fight efforts to curb global warming – the same warming that's melting sea ice and leaving walrus calves and polar bears to starve and drown.

Tell ExxonMobil's CEO to stop pushing for oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge; to withdraw its support of the pro-drilling Arctic Power lobbying firm; and to start investing in renewable energy for the future. Let ExxonMobil know that until they mend their anti-wildlife ways, you will be boycotting their gasoline!
Take Action

Tell Congress Not to Side With Corporate Interests on Internet Neutrality

Internet neutrality is the idea that the Internet should be a free and open network. But large media companies have been jockeying for more control over it and recently, they experienced a small, but alarming victory.

A Congressional panel voted to make it easier for phone and cable companies to block or slow your access to sites and services on the Web.

Why? Because telephone and cable companies, like AT&T and Comcast, own the lines that connect you to the Internet, they can control where you go and how fast you get there. By blocking or slowing access to Internet-based services that compete with their own offerings like Internet-telephone, music, and video downloads, they reduce competition and increase business -- but for Internet users like you and me, this is bad news.

Now, the issue goes before Congress and if they pass this legislation, it would be like opening Pandora’s box. Once phone and cable companies are granted the legal ability to block or inhibit your access to the Web and its services, access to information becomes monopolized, making it near impossible for bloggers, start-ups, and every day people to create new content or access it.

We need to stand up, before the last great democratic frontier falls under the control of corporate America. Take a moment now to tell Congress why the Internet must be kept free and open, for everyone!
Take Action

Thanks to the Organic Food Production Act passed in 1990, the USDA is supposed to require that all cows have access to pasture if milk is labeled "organic."

But this rule is largely undefined, and as a result, major factory farmers have been selling their milk as "organic" when really their cows are kept in cramped feedlots - only let out to pasture when they're not producing milk.

Now agribusiness wants to make this loophole into a law - pressuring the USDA to adopt a new rule that would allow an organic label whether or not animals have access to open pasture.

But this is not what consumers want - the majority of people surveyed by Consumer's Union believe that milk labeled as organic should mean the cows that produce it have grazed outdoors.

If you don't want your organic milk to come from a feedlot, make your voice heard!

Motor vehicles are responsible for almost a quarter of America’s annual carbon dioxide emissions, the primary global-warming gas. But while global warming pollution and oil use from autos is one of our most pressing national, economic, and environmental security problems, it is also one of the most solvable.

The most effective near-term way automakers can help America reduce its CO2 emissions and its dependence on oil is by using existing, cost-effective technologies to increase the fuel economy of today's vehicles.

Unfortunately, the Ford Motor Company recently took a step backward in that effort, announcing that it will abandon its commitment to produce 250,000 hybrid vehicles a year by 2010. This is the second time Ford has failed to follow through on a major fuel economy commitment.

Ford's shift away from hybrids is a shift away from a genuine attempt to address America's oil use.

Each year, coffee companies make billions of dollars. Starbucks alone earned almost $5.8 billion in net revenues during the first three quarters of 2006.

Yet, for every cup of coffee Starbucks sells, poor farmers in coffee-growing countries like Ethiopia earn only about $.03. Even worse, while Ethiopian farmers grow some of the finest name-brand coffees in the world – think Harar, Yirgacheffe, and Sidamo – they don't see the premium profits those names command among consumers.

With as many as 15 million Ethiopians dependent on coffee, Ethiopia wants to get its farmers more of what they deserve. The country's government has asked Starbucks to sign a licensing agreement that will allow Ethiopia to control the names of its coffee.
Tell Starbucks to Honor Their Commitments to Coffee Farmers - success

Over 22,000 Care2 members signed our partner Oxfam's petition urging Starbucks to honor their commitments to coffee farmers. With as many as 15 million Ethiopians dependent on coffee, Ethiopia's government asked Starbucks to sign a licensing agreement that will allow Ethiopia to control the names of its coffee. This would allow Ethiopia to determine an export price that guarantees farmers receive a fair share of coffee profits, enabling them to feed their children, send them to school, and get them better healthcare. Starbucks listened.

On November 28, Starbucks CEO Jim Donald met with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to discuss Ethiopia's ownership of its coffee names and the enormous benefits that ownership could bring to the 15 million poor Ethiopians who depend on coffee for their livelihood. While nothing has been finalized, this is a huge step in the right direction!

Stand Up for Living Wages for All Working People

All working people should be able to support their families on a living wage. But one institution, Vanderbilt University, stubbornly refuses to pay its workers a living wage even though the university president enjoys a salary of $1.2 million a year!

The unsung heroes that keep the doors of this institution open - groundskeepers, custodians and food services workers, among others - can't afford even the basic necessities for themselves or their families. This tragic situation affects not only the workers, but also their children, neighbors, and the communities they live in.

Despite having an overall budget of $2.2 billion dollars, the university won't back down from its inhumane policies. In fact, according to The New York Times a worker was forced into a homeless shelter because she couldn't make ends meet on her Vanderbilt wages!

We need to keep up the pressure until all workers earn a living wage. Tell the Vanderbilt Trustees that America's workers and their families must be treated with fairness and dignity. Tell them to pay living wages now!
Take Action

Stop broadband companies from charging early termination fees!

Hate long-term cell phone contracts and hefty cancellation fees? Well, hold on to your wallet, because now high-speed Internet companies are using them.

Most of us have, at best, two choices for high-speed Internet service: our cable and phone companies. Now these companies want to lock you in with hefty termination penalties to prevent you from switching to the other provider even if their service fails to deliver as promised.

Phone companies offer short-term promotional rates for DSL, but often require you to stick with the service for a year or more, even if the promotional price expires during that time.
To get out, you might have to pay a fee of up to $200. And some cable companies offer a bundle of broadband, video and phone service, sometimes for a discount, then jack up the price for the remaining services if you cancel one of them during the contract term.

That's not real choice--and it's not real competition. Tell the Federal Communications Commission to put a stop to early termination fees in broadband and give consumers real choice.
Take Action

CEO and Execs Take Nearly $200 Million and Workers Get Nothing

American Airlines is announcing that this month top executives will split close to $200 million in stock bonuses while workers will get nothing. The entire profit for American Airlines last year was $231 million.

The greed of the company's managers is putting America's hardest working families in jeopardy. Top executives should not take millions when employees made personal sacrifices to save the company from bankruptcy and still have not had their wages and benefits restored.

CEO Gerald Arpey told workers in 2003 to pull together and that "we would share the pain and share in the gain." Since then, the 27,000 ground workers at American Airlines represented by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) have saved the company hundreds of millions of dollars by creating new efficiencies and workers brought in more than $100 million in new revenue from other airlines. Now foreign airlines are flying their planes to the U.S. for repairs at American's facilities! Other workers at American have contributed to similar gains.

Refusing to reward employees for a job well done is bad for the talented people who work for American Airlines - and for their communities. It's just plain bad business.

Sign the petition to send a letter to the vice presidents of American Airlines. Tell them to stop their corporate greed and support a more equitable workplace!
Take Action

Support Family Farms, NOT Mega-Farms

URGENT: House to vote Thursday on 2007 Farm Bill - act now to support family farms!

Last Wednesday the House Agriculture Committee voted to increase subsidies that mega-farms use to drive family farms off the land and out of business. Not only does this action further subsidize the demise of family farms, it diverts scarce dollars from vital programs that could benefit all of America. This Thursday, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin will bring an amendment to the House floor during debate on the Farm Bill that will reverse this move.

The House Agriculture Committee's 2007 Farm Bill proposal is NOT reform. Representative Ryan's amendment is true reform. It would close the loopholes in farm programs that allow a few extremely wealthy individuals to receive multi-million dollar subsidy checks. Rep. Ryan's amendment would restore integrity to farm programs.

Urge your representative to vote FOR the Paul Ryan amendment that will reverse the payment limitation increase, close the loopholes, and limit farm subsidies to mega-farms. Tell your representative that supporting family farmers and rural America means supporting Rep. Ryan's amendment this Thursday.

Make Sure Pharmacies Supply Plan B!

This month marks the one-year anniversary of the Bush administration's long overdue approval of Plan B® - also known as emergency contraception - for over-the-counter sales to adults.

Despite this victory, there are still pharmacies that refuse to stock Plan B and pharmacists who refuse to dispense it.

Just a few months ago, a Kroger Co. pharmacist in Georgia sent 42-year-old college professor and mother of two Carrie Baker away empty-handed when she tried to purchase Plan B®. The Kroger Co. is one of the nation's largest grocery and pharmacy retailers, operating more than 1,921 stores - like Ralphs, Dillons, Fred Meyer, and Smith's - in 31 states across the country.

The Kroger Co. has published conflicting statements on its Plan B® stocking and refusal policy. What's more, NARAL Pro-Choice America volunteer efforts showed that more than one in five local Kroger Co. pharmacies contacted don't stock Plan B®.

Pharmacists should never prevent any woman from accessing safe, legal emergency contraception. Sign this petition and your letter will be hand-delivered to the Kroger Co. urging them to stock Plan B®!
Take Action

Supreme Court Decisions are Chipping Away our Civil Rights!

The Supreme Court has made a string of decisions that signal a troubling shift in the meaning and effectiveness of the nation's core civil rights statutes.

The latest wrong perpetrated by our nation's highest court will have a huge impact on the working lives - and livelihoods - of Americans across the country.

In Ledbetter v. Goodyear, a 19-year Goodyear Tire employee in Alabama was paid thousands of dollars less than her male counterparts. But Ledbetter got no justice when the court heavily reinterpreted past cases by saying she filed her complaint too late. Now, even though pay information is usually secretive, employees only have 180 days to sue employers after a discriminatory pay decision is made!

How can workers sue employers before they even realize they're being discriminated against? The Ledbetter v. Goodyear case is a painful and costly step backward for the nation!

Thankfully, Congress has introduced bills to fix the Supreme Court's blunder on workplace discrimination! Important legislation is making its way through Congress. Urge your Senators to co-sponsor the Fair Pay Restoration Act today!
Take Action

FedEx Ground: Your Drivers Deserve to be Treated Fairly!

More than 15,000 FedEx Ground drivers don't have a voice at work, or the ability to stand up to the company. These men and women work long hours, often without benefits, are frequently harassed and even fired for supporting a union.

What's more, FedEx makes the drivers lease their own trucks (which cost around $40,000) so quitting can mean losing a major personal investment. Unions are often their only recourse.

FedEx Ground advertises efficiency and professionalism, but their anti-union posters and the distribution of anti-union videos show they're more about pushing their own agenda.

A new report shows that when anti-union persuasion fails, there's outright bullying. High-level management arrive on the scene to harass, isolate, retaliate against and even fire union supporters!

Resorting to nasty labor tactics to increase company profits is just not right.
Demand that FedEx Ground give benefits and respect to the people who make the company so successful!
Take Action

Home Foreclosure Crisis can be Stopped! Support the Foreclosure Prevention Act

Thanks to years of reckless and abusive lending practices, foreclosure rates are skyrocketing. This nationwide crisis threatens some of America's most vulnerable citizens, their neighborhoods and entire communities, and our national economy.

The Senate will be voting on the Foreclosure Prevention Act (S. 2636). If passed, this commonsense solution will allow victims of abusive lending who are facing foreclosures to stay in their homes while they work through the bankruptcy courts to repay the debt.

By passing the Foreclosure Prevention Act, we'll not only be helping over 600,000 families stand up to abusive lending companies, but we'll be helping entire communities facing lower property values, and the economy overall.

Stop the 11 Fast Food Junkies!

The forests of the American South are being cut down to meet the fast food industry's hunger for brand-centered wrappers, boxes, and cups. Consider that last year:

* The average American ate fast food 150 times, and generated 300 pounds of packaging waste.
* Americans used 15 billion disposable hot beverage cups.
* 32 percent of the domestic waste stream consisted of containers and packaging.

There are 11 fast food industry giants, including McDonald's, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, KFC , and Taco Bell, that are big buyers of paper packaging from the forests of the Southern United States.

These forests are the worlds' largest paper producing region, and as a result, 43 millions of acres of forests have been converted into sterile, row-crop like pine plantations. The U.S. Forest Service states that nearly one out of every five acres of Southern forests is now pine plantations.

It's time for the fast food companies to clean up their wrappers! Protect our forests from the 11 Fast Food Junkies!
