Tell Congress to Keep Sewage Out of Our Drinking Water!

Two phrases you never want to see in the same sentence: drinking water and "sewage blending." And yet, that's the Bush Administration's new plan for your water supply!

Incredibly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is about to relax restrictions on dumping sewage into our waterways. Their plan would allow water treatment facilities to release sewage filled with human wastes, toxins, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pollutants into our drinking water.

"Sewage blending" poses a serious threat to our health and our communities. Sewage that has not been fully treated carries diseases such as cholera, hepatitis, respiratory infections, and others which can be life threatening for those with weakened immune systems.

In addition to the health hazards, sewage dumping will have adverse, long-term environmental and economic consequences. Sewage in our waterways forces beach closings, increases the cost of drinking water filtration, damages coral reefs, shuts down shellfish beds, and robs the water of oxygen that fish need to breathe.

This proposal is so outrageous, we've got to get EVERYONE to take action to defeat it. Urge Congress to support the Save Our Waters from Sewage Act (H.R. 1126) to protect our families, children and communities from unsafe drinking water!

Your help is critical to LCV as it works to protect our families from unsafe drinking water and to shape a pro-environment Congress and White House.
Take Action

Tell Congress to Stop Hurting Your Healthcare

Congress has moved quickly this session to reintroduce the flawed Small Business Health Fairness Act of 2005 (H.R. 525/S. 406), legislation that creates federal Association Health Plans (AHPs) and lets insurers off the hook when it comes to protecting you and your family. We prevented this legislation from becoming law last year - now we need to stop it again.

Congress is trying to create this "new" kind of federal health insurance called Association Health Plans. But AHPs are really healthcare that hurts. AHPs mean no protection, no guarantee and no limits on price. They will be exempt from health and consumer protection laws you have in your state. We need to do something about healthcare, but AHPs will make things worse.

They will be able to raise your rates, as much as and as often as they want. You could face frequent rate hikes because you get sick and file a claim.

They will take away your right to appeal. Right now, in most states, you have the right to appeal if health insurers refuse to pay your bill, but you won't with AHPs.

They may not be there to pay your claims. You could get stuck with the bills, because AHPs won't have to keep enough money in the bank to cover your medical expenses.

Only you can stop them. Protect Your Healthcare, a broad alliance that includes the American Federation of Teachers, the AFL-CIO, the American Nurses Association and the National Partnership for Women and Families, is committed to fighting AHPs.

Tell Congress to Keep Sewage Out of Our Drinking Water! - success

On May 19th, by a vote of 329-89 the House of Representatives approved a $7.57 billion buget for the EPA for fiscal year 2006.

In an important environmental victory, the House barred the EPA from adopting a policy that would have permitted the blending of partially and fully treated sewage into our water supply after heavy rains and snow melts. At the same time, lawmakers rejected amendments to increase spending for specific EPA programs dealing with wastewater and Superfund cleanup.

We could not have achieved this victory against "sewage blending" without the huge outpouring of letters and comments from concerned citizens like you. A heartfelt thank you to all who spoke out against this outrageous policy proposal that threatened our drinking water!

Forty years after Griswold v. CT, we're still fighting for birth control...

June 7 is the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that recognized married couples' right to use birth control. This came about when the Supreme Court struck down a Connecticut statute that prohibited the use of birth control in the decision Griswold v. Connecticut.

While in 1965 the high court ruled that the Connecticut statute violated the Constitutional right to marital privacy, today we are dangerously close to losing these hard won privacy rights.

Women across the country now face an alarming trend of anti-choice pharmacists denying them their legally prescribed medications due to personal objections to birth control. Some pharmacists even go so far as to lecture women, humiliate them, or refuse to hand back the prescription after they refuse to fill it. Yet most women don't even know this is happening, much less
what they can do about it.

Help Stop Big Tobacco's Sweetheart Deal!

Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice tried to let Big Tobacco off the hook to the tune of $120 billion. At the very last minute in its tobacco lawsuit, the Justice Department suddenly slashed how much it wants the industry to pay for programs to help the nation's 45 million smokers quit. Profits and politics came before public health.

The next two weeks are absolutely critical. The judge in the case has set a deadline of June 25 for the government to tell her exactly what reforms to impose on Big Tobacco. This document will tell us once and for all whose side the Bush Administration is on: The People or Big Tobacco.

Big Tobacco CEOs testify at the 1994 Waxman hearings that "nicotine is not addictive."<?font>

We need your help to pressure the Administration to restore full funding for the quit-smoking program and support other strong reforms - like programs to prevent kids from ever starting to smoke and stiff fines if Big Tobacco continues to addict kids.

The tobacco industry's campaign contributions have bought incredible influence with the Bush Administration. But we've been able to stop them before. And we'll do it again this time - with your help!

Take action to make sure Big Tobacco is held accountable. Tell President Bush and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales not to let Big Tobacco off the hook!

Tell pharmacies to stop discriminating against women! - update

Pro-choice activists in 45 states went to their pharmacies to make history earlier this month, on June 7. Already, hundreds of activists have written in telling NARAL Pro-Choice America about their experience. NARAL has heard from a lot of people who said their pharmacist would fill prescriptions, but very few pharmacies agreed to post the sign due to restrictive corporate policies. NARAL even heard from a few pharmacists who strongly stand with us. One activist reported that her local Walgreens would not dispense the morning-after pill! NARAL has heard similar reports about at least one CVS store, as well, despite the company's public statement to the contrary.

Here are stories from two NARAL activists:

"I went out today to my Walgreen's in King of Prussia, PA and went in and spoke to the pharmacist and had memorized the whole speech the web page gave us. And I was told, "No!!" She told me she would not dispense Plan B contraceptives, because she considered it ABORTION... I asked her did she not understand that it was NOT abortion, it was a contraceptive to PREVENT pregnancy???!!... Her response was just, "Well, I believe it is." Please let me know what I can do to help to make this change a reality!!
- Debra, Valley Forge, PA

"I am a pharmacy technician of 13 yrs at the biggest retail pharmacy chain. Trust me, we stand up against the ones who put their religion before their patient's rights. I am very active in speaking up about women's rights to access to contraception."
- Angela, Portland, OR

Americans have demonstrated that they care when they generously supported organizations like Oxfam, which delivered emergency assistance to victims of the tsunami earlier this year.

Reform unfair trade rules to let poor people compete on fair terms and lift themselves out of poverty.

Oppose New Nuclear Weapons Today: Tell Senate, No Bunker Busters

The Bush administration has asked for $8.5 million in the 2006 budget for research on a "Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator" (RNEP). This new nuclear weapon, also known as the nuclear "bunker buster," is being promoted as a useful tool in attacking deeply buried command centers or underground stores of chemical and biological weapons. But numerous scientific critiques, including one by the National Academy of Science, find that in many cases such a weapon would be ineffective. In addition, the nuclear blast and radioactive fall-out could kill millions of innocent people in surrounding areas. A single "bunker buster" would be nearly 100 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.

In the coming weeks, the Senate will consider funding for this new nuclear weapon. Please tell your Senators to reject all funding for the dangerous nuclear "bunker buster."

Countdown to G8 - Reforming Trade, Canceling Debt, Making Poverty History

With just over a week to go before the G8 summit in Scotland, the pressure is now on for world leaders to announce a doubling of aid by $50 billion and serious progress on reforming unfair trade rules.

Oxfam welcomes the recent agreement by the finance ministers of the world's richest countries to cancel 100 percent of the debts of 18 countries, but urges them to broaden the deal to include other indebted poor countries in similar need of relief.

Meeting earlier this month in London, finance ministers from the world's richest countries agreed to cancel 100 per cent of the debts of 18 countries, 14 of which are in Africa.

The deal covers $50 billion of debts owed by poor countries to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the African Development Bank. The 18 initial countries qualify because they have already been through the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) debt relief scheme. They are Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guyana, Honduras, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

While welcoming the decision, Oxfam said the deal did not go far enough, since it covers only 10 to 20 percent of what's required and does not offer relief to all the countries that need it.

"There are still many hurdles for G8 leaders to clear," said Lawson. "This first hurdle - debt cancellation - is only worth $2 billion a year at most for poor countries. G8 leaders now need to urgently pick up the pace, respond to the calls of millions of campaigners around the world, and put up an extra $50 billion of aid to fund the fight against poverty."

Senate Rejects Anti-Nuclear Amendment - Struggle Moves to the House

On Thursday, June 30, the U.S. Senate voted 53-43 to approve funding for research into "bunker buster" nuclear weapons, as part of a $31.2 billion spending bill for energy and water projects. The full spending passed on a vote of 92-3. Care2 and ThePetitionSite members sent close to 10,000 letters to their Senators through this petition urging them to vote "no" on this funding. The vote was close, however, and the full bill now goes into negotiation between the House and the Senate over differences between them. In the House, David Hobson, a Republican from Ohio and chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees the nuclear weapons budget, once again eliminated ALL funding for these weapons. On July 1, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her retirement from the Supreme Court - and sent a shudder through the pro-choice community. Throughout her tenure, Justice O'Connor has been one of the "swing" votes on the Supreme Court, part of the razor-thin majority that has kept Roe v.
G8 Decisions Present Welcome Hope for Africa

In the past year, over 60,000 Care2 members have added
their voices to the ONE Declaration, almost 30,000 of those through this very petition, these dedicated members called on the G8
leaders to end global poverty and AIDS, particularly in
Africa. Our voice was strong, and they couldn't ignore us.

Last week at the G8 summit we made tremendous progress
toward our goal. While there is still much work to do, the G8
leaders agreed to:

Increase aid to Africa by $25 billion, more than a doubling of 2004 levels;

Increase global assistance by around $50 billion per year by 2010;

Provide near-universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment drugs;

Cancel the debt of some of the world's poorest nations; and

Address trade reforms in the near future.

Over 1.4 million Americans signed the ONE Declaration,
and Care2 members represented over 4% of that unified
voice! When we join together, we really can make a difference.
THANKS!

However, there is still a lot of progress that needs to be made to improve the lives of the 1 billion people living in extreme poverty around the world. At Care2 we are actively working with Oxfam to generate a new wave of support as we gear up for the UN Summit in early September. Read More.

Protect the Innocent Victims of Asbestos Poisoning

Asbestos manufacturers have known since the 1920's that their product injures and kills people exposed to it, yet they kept the deadly nature of their product a secret. Hundreds of thousands of workers and consumers have died or will die from diseases that result from asbestos exposure.

So how is Congress responding to these victims? By proposing legislation that would shield asbestos manufacturers from lawsuits and deny justice and fair compensation for the innocent victims of asbestos poisoning, depriving them of their day in court.

The trust fund that would be established to compensate victims under the so-called Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act (FAIR Act) is unfair, underfunded, unworkable and unconstitutional. It would make asbestos victims overcome huge new hurdles to prove that they are eligible - and if they are able to do this, they would then be forced to wait years for the compensation they deserve. And in a particularly outrageous provision of this bill, many who were exposed to asbestos in the World Trade Center collapse on 9/11 would be ineligible for compensation.

Take action today: sign this petition to your senators, and urge them to protect innocent victims of asbestos poisoning by OPPOSING the FAIR Act!

Take Action

Supreme Court Battle: The Status of Roe v. Wade

Protecting Roe FAQ:

Question: "Isn't it true that Roe v. Wade won't be overturned, no matter who is appointed to the Court, since the justices don't like to overturn previous opinions?"

Answer:

Trusting far right judges to respect precedent is not a risk we can afford to take when the Court already has several members who've voted to overturn Roe in previous cases.

Three of the current justices have explicitly said Roe should be overturned (and two of them are among the youngest members of the Court).

In fact, the Court will overturn its precedents whenever a majority wants to.

President Bush has already nominated numerous judges to other Federal courts who are advocates of overturning Roe.

The Court could also claim that it is not overturning Roe, but permit many more restrictions on the right to choose so the right would be even more limited than it has already become.

FDA Agrees to Make Decision on Plan B by September

On July 15th, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) succeeded in pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to make a decision on "Plan B", a petition to make the "morning-after" pill available to women over the counter instead of by prescription.

The FDA now has until to September 1st to decide whether to go along with the doctors and scientists who overwhelmingly support giving women over-the-counter access to the pill or capitulate to pressure from the radical right, which strongly opposes the measure. Consequently, the senators have lifted their hold on Lester Crawford's nomination to become the new FDA Commissioner.

President Bush Seeks Advice From Jerry Falwell on Supreme Court Nominee

Divisive Radical Right Leader 'Trusts' Bush to Name Someone He’ll Like

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, expressed concern about reports today that the Bush Administration has actively sought the advice of radical right leader Jerry Falwell on whom to nominate for vacancy on the Supreme Court, stripping the White House of any credibility in searching for a consensus candidate who can unify the country.

In a story published in the New York Times on July 13, Falwell -- who enraged Americans after the September 11, 2001 attacks by saying that we could expect more attacks if "God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve" -- confirmed that the White House reached out to him to seek his advice on a Supreme Court nominee. The paper reported that Falwell "declined to offer advice, telling the White House staff member that, because of Mr. Bush's track record appointing conservative judges, '"I am willing to sit back and trust him and pray for him."

"We're glad that President Bush is reaching out for advice, but this isn't the direction we had in mind," said Keenan. "Consulting with Jerry Falwell is not a recipe for bringing America together. Even more troubling is the assurance Falwell has apparently been given that any nominee would meet his litmus test of opposing personal freedoms like the right to privacy and a woman's right to choose. Any nominee who can earn Jerry Falwell’s trust is someone who’ll likely be hard for mainstream America to swallow.

Keenan added "When Americans read the vicious words that came from Jerry Falwell in the wake of our worst tragedy ever, they saw his true colors. That the President would seek the counsel of such a person is unconscionable."

Tell pharmacies to stop discriminating against women! - update

NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation's leading advocate of personal privacy and a woman's right to choose, raised concerns today that anti-choice House leaders may be preparing legislation to protect pharmacies that refuse to fill legal, valid birth-control prescriptions. The House Small Business Committee has just called a July 25 hearing to explore the issue.

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said: "It is remarkable that there are pharmacies across this country where a woman can walk in with a prescription for birth control and not be able to have it filled. It would be outrageous if an anti-choice-controlled Congress were to take action that could defend - or even encourage - such a thing. Politicians should be supporting personal responsibility and personal freedom, not empowering those who try to impose their ideological values on women trying to access basic health care."

Keenan also pointed to recent polling that shows 80 percent of Americans oppose allowing pharmacists to refuse to fill women's prescriptions for birth control. Even 74 percent of self-described "pro-life" voters oppose these refusals.

"The overwhelming majority of Americans want to protect women's access to birth control," Keenan said. "It is astounding that, 40 years after a landmark Supreme Court case that established a right to privacy and legalized the use of birth control, Congress could be considering turning back the clock and blocking women’s access to birth control."

While no legislation has yet been introduced to protect discriminatory pharmacies, the July 25 hearing could indicate that such a measure is in the works. Bills have been introduced, in both the House and Senate, to protect women’s health by protecting their prescriptions. Among other proposals, in April 2005, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Chris Shays (R-CT) introduced the Access to Legal Pharmaceuticals Act ("ALPhA"), which would ensure that pharmacies fill all legal, valid prescriptions. However, to date, anti-choice congressional leaders refused action on ALPHa and all other related bills.

The Battle for the Supreme Court Starts Now! - update

In a devastating move, George W. Bush has nominated John Roberts to replace Justice O'Connor's swing vote on the U.S. Supreme Court. By nominating John Roberts, George Bush has issued a slap in the face to every American who values personal privacy and a woman's right to choose.

If Roberts is confirmed to a lifetime appointment, there is little doubt that he will work to overturn Roe v. Wade. As Deputy Solicitor General under the first President Bush, he argued to the Supreme Court that "Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled...." We must not allow someone who's spent his career advocating ending the right to choose to be appointed to the most important court in our country.

Some of the lowlights of Judge Roberts' background include:

As Deputy Solicitor General, Roberts argued in a brief before the U.S. Supreme Court (in a case that did not implicate Roe v. Wade) that "[w]e continue to believe that Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled…. [T]he Court's conclusion in Roe that there is a fundamental right to an abortion… finds no support in the text, structure, or history of the Constitution."

In Rust v. Sullivan, the Supreme Court considered whether Department of Health and Human Services regulations limiting the ability of Title X recipients to engage in abortion-related activities violated various constitutional provisions. Roberts, appearing on behalf of HHS as Deputy Solicitor General, argued that this domestic gag rule did not violate constitutional protections.

Roberts, again as Deputy Solicitor General, filed a "friend of the court" brief for the United States supporting Operation Rescue and six other individuals who routinely blocked access to reproductive health care clinics, arguing that the protesters' behavior did not amount to discrimination against women even though only women could exercise the right to seek an abortion.

The Court was so accustomed to the Solicitor General and the Deputy Solicitor General arguing for the overturn of Roe that during John Roberts' oral argument before the Supreme Court in Bray, a Justice Asked, "Mr. Roberts, in this case are you asking that Roe v. Wade be overruled?" He responded, "No, your honor, the issue doesn't even come up." To this the justice said, "Well, that hasn't prevented the Solicitor General from taking that position in prior cases."

Urge the USDA to to keep U.S. beef safe from mad cow disease!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed in June that a cow born and bred in the United States had tested positive for mad cow disease. This was the second confirmed case of mad cow in the United States. The animal was originally suspected of having the disease last November, but the USDA failed to use the best available tests to diagnose the case for seven months.

This is a wake-up call to American consumers. We need swift and decisive action from federal regulators to ensure that the U.S. beef supply remains safe, and recommend that the USDA test all cattle over 20 months of age for mad cow disease.

USDA claims it can measure the extent of the mad cow risk because it tests the highest risk animals – approximately 1% of all cattle slaughtered each year. But USDA's surveillance and testing program is so secretive that the public has no way of knowing whether they are targeting high-risk or low-risk animals, or if their methods are based on sound science.

We must act sooner rather than later. If people eat beef from an animal infected with mad cow disease, they are at risk of contracting the incurable brain-wasting disorder, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The United Kingdom illustrates what can happen when regulators are slow to react; in that country an outbreak of mad cow disease resulted in millions of cattle being destroyed, beef exports being blocked for many years, and 147 human deaths.

Urge the USDA to take immediate action to keep the U.S. food supply safe from mad cow disease.

House Passes Flawed Healthcare Legislation - AHP Bill Now Goes to Senate

On Tuesday July 26, the House of Representatives gave America a dose of bad medicine and passed the flawed Small Business Health Fairness Act of 2005 (H.R. 525/S. 406), legislation that will create federal Association Health Plans (AHPs). This bill could raise your health insurance rates, remove your right to appeal, and weaken critical health protections you depend on in your state.

This bill now goes to the Senate, where we've managed to stop it before. It is critical that your Senator hear from you before voting on AHP legislation.

AHPs are touted as a quick fix for the millions of American families without healthcare. But sadly, this bill is only designed to serve the desires of a few small business and insurance brokers rather than actually reduce the number of uninsured Americans.

If this bill becomes law, AHPs will be free to eliminate your right to appeal a denied claim, deny your access to trusted healthcare specialists like ObGyns and cardiologists, with little potential to expand healthcare coverage. What we do know is that if the Senate does pass this law, AHPs will be able to increase your premiums -- as much and as often as they choose.

Prevent the Misuse of Antibiotics

The Preservation of Antibiotics for Human Treatment Act (S. 2508) will phase out the routine feeding of medically important antibiotics to healthy livestock and poultry. The poultry and livestock industries have been major culprits in the overuse of antibiotics. The misuse of antibiotics is leading to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which are causing increasing numbers of serious, difficult-to-treat illnesses in humans.

Healthy farm animals are routinely fed antibiotics to promote growth and compensate for unsanitary conditions, particularly at crowded factory farms. This "nontherapeutic" use of antibiotics in healthy pigs, poultry, and beef cattle constitutes an estimated 70% of all antibiotics used in the United States.

S. 2508 will phase-out the nontherapeutic use of eight types of antibiotics in animal agriculture that are also used in human medicine, or are so closely related to human use drugs that they trigger cross-resistance. By targeting the nontherapeutic use of antibiotics, the bill properly allows sick animals to receive necessary treatment.

The act also bans the use in poultry of Cipro-like drugs called fluoroquinolones. In October 2000, the FDA proposed to ban poultry fluoroquinolones because their use undercuts the effectiveness of Cipro and related drugs in treating certain forms of severe food poisoning in humans.

The American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, the World Health Organization and other leading health organizations are on record opposing both the nontherapeutic use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.

Add your voice and press for fast action on this vital legislation. Send a letter now to your Senator and ask him or her to stand for public health and safety by cosponsoring and supporting S. 2508, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Human Treatment Act.

Antibiotics Victory! FDA Bans Medically Important Antibiotic in Poultry

After a five-year battle, the FDA finally banned Cipro-like antibiotics for use in poultry. These drugs, like Bayer's Bactril, are used in people to treat food poisoning and bacterial infections.

This action is the first time that FDA has ever withdrawn an agricultural antibiotic from the market because of concerns about antibiotic resistance affecting human health. The ban was proposed in October 2000, but took nearly five years to finalize because of numerous procedural delays created by drug manufacturers.

According to the Keep Antibiotics Working coalition, the FDA has shown that use of Baytril in poultry reduces the effectiveness of Cipro in treating Campylobacter, one of the most common causes of severe bacterial food poisoning. The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that resistance to Cipro in Campylobacter in humans has risen to 21 percent as of 2002; when Cipro-like drugs were first approved for use in poultry in 1995, such resistance was negligible.

The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the U.S. - about 25 million pounds annually - are routinely fed to poultry, swine, and beef cattle not to treat illness but rather to promote slightly faster growth and to compensate for overcrowded and unhealthy conditions in concentrated animal feeding operations. More than half of these drugs are identical or similar to antibiotics that are important in human medicine. Use of antibiotic feed additives spurs the development and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria in our food supply and the environment.

Every minute, one woman dies in childbirth, 20 children die of starvation and two women die from AIDS. These are needless, preventable and unacceptable deaths.

Women and children disproportionately bear the weight of extreme poverty around the world. In many countries, women are routinely denied access to resources and even the most basic education, making it virtually impossible for them to adequately provide for their children and themselves.

Five years ago, all 189 members of the United Nations agreed to eight Millennium Development Goals, which set 15-year targets for, among other things, eradicating extreme poverty, enrolling every child in primary school, empowering women, reducing child mortality and improving maternal health. Meeting these goals, all nations agreed, requires a global partnership between countries both rich and poor.

On Sept. 14-16, the leaders of some 170 nations will gather in New York City for the World Summit, where they will take stock of their progress toward meeting the Millennium Development Goals. Time is running out. Many nations have made significant strides -- Tanzania now offers free primary education to all, Uganda reversed the spread of AIDS and Bangladesh narrowed the gender gap in school attendance.
The Bush administration has broken its promise to make a decision on the morning-after pill by September 1.

American women have waited more than two years for the FDA to decide whether women can purchase the morning-after pill over the counter. The Bush administration explicitly promised the U.S. Senate that the FDA would stop dragging its feet and issue a decision by September 1. Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) secured this written promise last month as part of an agreement to lift their hold on the nomination of Lester Crawford to the post of FDA commissioner.

FDA Commissioner resigns; departure should prompt action on Plan B

Just two months after being confirmed by the Senate, FDA Director Lester Crawford abruptly resigned on Friday. He gave no specific reason for his departure, stating, "It is time at the age of 67, to step aside."

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, called Crawford's resignation an opportunity for the agency to rebuild its credibility and move forward on a petition to make emergency contraception available to women over the counter.

For more than two years now, the FDA has repeatedly refused to decide whether women may purchase Plan B, an emergency contraceptive also known as the "morning-after" pill, without a prescription. Most recently, as the Senate considered Crawford’s nomination to serve as commissioner, Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt made senators an explicit, written promise that the agency would make a decision on a pending over-the-counter application by September 1. The agency has failed to honor its promise.

Oppose the Weakening of Organic Labeling Laws

A recent court decision ruled that only natural ingredients should be allowed in foods labeled as "organic." This ruling reinforces our current organic labeling law by keeping chemically-derived synthetic substances from being used in foods labeled as "organic."

But industry groups are lobbying Congress to change the law so that artificial ingredients can be included in foods labeled "organic"! Specifically, food producers such as the Organic Trade Association, Kraft Foods and others seek to amend the Organic Foods Production Act (passed in 1990) so that synthetic substances can be used in food products labeled as "organic." They claim that consumers do not care about their use in "organic" food and are trying to slip this change into the law without any public input.

U.S. consumers clearly do care! The nonpartisan watchdog group Consumers Union (publisher of Consumer Reports) recently conducted a nationwide survey of 1,200 adults and found that 85% of respondents said they do not expect food labeled as "organic" to contain artificial or chemically-derived ingredients.

In November's special election called by Governor Schwarzenegger, Californians will see a dangerous initiative on the ballot. Californians will have an opportunity to vote on a parental notification measure on a woman's access to abortion, which threatens the health and well being of young women in our state.

Real family communication begins at home, not at the ballot box. The best way to protect our daughters is to begin talking to them about responsible, appropriate sexual behavior when they're young and to continue to keep the lines of communication open as they get older. Our focus should be on prevention of unwanted pregnancies through comprehensive sex education, counseling and access to contraceptives.

62 Lawmakers Urge FDA to Approve Plan B "Without Further Delay"

A bipartisan group of 62 legislators is calling on Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach to allow sales of Plan B, the "morning after pill," over-the-counter. In a letter to the acting commissioner dated October 7, the group of lawmakers expressed concern that the FDA had ignored its own experts' recommendations in the agency's decision to continue delaying approval of over-the-counter sales of emergency contraception. "We find it contradictory and disconcerting that the FDA's concerns are a direct result of the agency's own recommendations last May," the lawmakers, which included six Republicans and one Independent, wrote.

The lawmakers also noted that the agency's delay will hinder efforts to reduce abortions in the United States, and urged von Eschenbach to approve Plan B "without further delay."

More and more women are being denied their doctor-prescribed birth control pills across the country.

As many as 20 states have laws on the books that put a pharmacist's personal views above a woman's right to safe and legal birth control – making it even easier for pharmacists to deny women access to prescription contraceptives. Birth control is basic health care for the vast majority of American women, and no third party should be able to stop a woman from taking responsibility for her reproductive health!

That's why a bipartisan group of pro-choice members of Congress - Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT), and others have introduced a bill to ensure that women can get their birth control prescriptions filled - without intimidation, inconvenience, or delay. Under the Access to Legal Pharmaceuticals Act (ALPhA), pharmacies would be responsible for filling women's birth control prescriptions even if a pharmacist refuses for personal reasons.

Consumers Union Derides Dark-of-Night Weakening of Organic Law

YONKERS, NY -- Consumers Union, non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports, is deeply disappointed with the Agricultural Appropriations Conference Committee’s weakening of the organic label, which was done without any public input. The decision to allow synthetic (chemically derived) ingredients—some without careful, independent review—was made even after members of Congress heard from more than 325,000 of their constituents and more than 200 organic companies opposing this very action.

“The real losers today are America’s organic consumers who do not expect food labeled as "organic" to contain artificial (or synthetic) ingredients. Consumers Union will be mounting a widespread public education campaign to help consumers look for additional, meaningful labels on organic food products, such as ‘no-synthetics used’ or ‘100% grassfed’, so that they get the most value for the premium price they are willing to pay,” says Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Senior Scientist and Policy Analyst at Consumers Union.

The amendment added by the Agricultural Appropriations Conference Committee was aggressively pushed by the Organic Trade Association. The amendment overturned Harvey vs. Johanns, a recent court decision that upheld the organic law by barring the use of synthetic ingredients in the non-organic portion of food labeled “organic.” These are food products that must be made with at least 95% organic material but can have 5% non-organic ingredients.

“While consumers don’t get to vote in the halls of Congress, they do get to vote in the marketplace where the success of “organic” is ultimately dependent on consumer confidence in the integrity of the label. We’ll be doing everything in our power to educate consumers on which organic product lines deserve this trust—and which ones don’t,” adds Rangan.

Californians Vote to Keep Teens Safe, Reject Anti-Choice Prop. 73

Washington, DC -- NARAL Pro-Choice America commended the efforts of its chapter, NARAL Pro-Choice California, and the state’s pro-choice coalition partners for their pivotal role in the rejection of a ballot initiative in the Golden State.

The measure, Proposition 73, included a parental involvement mandate and other anti-choice provisions.

The leaders of both the national group and the state chapter said voters’ rejection of Prop 73 demonstrated that anti-choice rhetoric won't persuade voters to support measures that would endanger teens' health.

"Californians reaffirmed their commitment to a woman’s right to choose and rejected a ballot initiative that would have jeopardized the safety and health of our state’s teens. All of us want parents to be involved in their teens’ lives, but California voters understood that Prop 73 was more about anti-choice groups pushing an agenda and not about the health and safety of their kids," said Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. "It’s was a tough fight – and we were proud to work alongside our coalition partners, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, ACLU California, and the California Family Health Clinics in successfully communicating why Prop. 73 was wrong for California’s families."

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, commended Californians for protecting their teens by voting down Prop. 73.

"A ballot initiative cannot mandate healthy family communication," Keenan said. "Yesterday’s vote is a sign that Californians want Governor Schwarzenegger and other elected officials to focus on ways to prevent unintended pregnancy. Fortunately, California has made honest, medically accurate sex education a priority, so let’s hope the state will devote more resources to these efforts, now that voters have said no to anti-choice proposals like Prop. 73."

Care2 Members can Help Provide Orphaned Children a Future

Over 140 million children living in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean have lost a parent resulting from conflict and disease - undercutting their already difficult struggle to cope with basic needs such as health care, food, clothing, and education.

The situation is even more dire for 16 million of these children who have lost both their parents, the vast majority of whom had their lives taken by AIDS.

America has taken the first step in proving international leadership to highlight the suffering of children and bring hope to the world's future generations by passing the Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children in Developing Countries Act. But there is still much to do - the law needs to be backed up by $340 million in funding.

By acting now, Congress can ensure orphans and vulnerable children assistance to support basic care and increased educational opportunities.

Ask Congress to end the suffering of millions of orphan children by fully funding this legislation.

Congress will vote next week on a bill that would gut state food safety and labeling laws, endangering the food you eat. H.R. 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act," lowers the bar on food safety by overturning state food safety laws that are not "identical" to federal law. Hundreds of state laws and regulations are at risk, including those governing the safety of milk and shellfish.

There's a quiet war going on in America – against the most basic rights of Americans, especially women, to make their own personal decisions about family planning.

It was started by a small group of extreme ideologues who claim the right to impose their personal beliefs on the overwhelming majority of the American people.

They're waging this silent war on contraception by using the power of the White House and their right-wing allies in Congress -- and so far, they're getting away with it.

The United States has one of the highest rates of unintended pregnancies in the industrialized world. And the impact of the war on contraception is borne by the poor: a poor woman is four times as likely to experience an unplanned pregnancy as a higher-income woman.

That's why Senator Hillary Clinton and Congresswoman Nita Lowey have introduced a Congressional Resolution to Strengthen Family Planning Services for Women - and they need your voice to make sure every member of Congress votes on this Resolution. Become a co-sponsor today and help us pass this important resolution to ensure women have access to contraceptives! Senator Clinton will forward your message to your Congressional representatives.
Take Action

We think American citizens have a right to know what toxic chemicals are being released into their local communities.

But the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced plans to significantly limit the information that companies are required to disclose about their release of hazardous chemicals – including toxins like mercury, lead, and dioxin — into our environment.

Through its plan to reduce the reporting requirements of its Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program, the EPA is proposing to take away an important tool for protecting public health and our environment. In its 20 years in existence, the TRI has provided the public with critical information about chemical contaminants that pose a serious threat to our health, while simultaneously providing incentives for companies to reduce their pollution levels.

There is no justification for weakening this successful program today, other than to please large corporate polluters, who view public disclosure as a costly nuisance. That's why we must send a strong message to the Bush Administration that this is unacceptable public policy in a democracy!

Congratulations Care2 activists! Your voice helped win a victory in Congress.

At the end of 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced plans to significantly limit the information that companies are required to provide through the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) about their release of toxic chemicals—like mercury, lead, and dioxin—into local communities.

In response, 110,000 Americans (including you) submitted comments regarding the proposed change, with an overwhelming majority rejecting the proposal.

Your comments helped encourage Congress to step in. On Thursday of last week, a bipartisan group in the House of Representatives voted 231 to 187 in favor of the amendment to preserve this important public safety initiative.

While the battle is not over, this is an important step in ensuring the TRI continues to assist communities in curbing toxic pollution.

Hold a Vote on Stem Cell Research!

On May 24th 2005, a bipartisan majority of the House took an important step to helping extend or save the lives of millions of Americans by passing H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. Leading the Democrats on this bill is Diana DeGette from Colorado's 1st district. Rep. DeGette began working to expand federal support for stem cell research in 2001, before President Bush imposed strict limitations on stem cell lines eligible for funding.

It's now been one year – ONE YEAR – since Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist said he had changed his mind and would support expanding stem cell research beyond President Bush's stifling limitations. That was a moment when millions of Americans suffering from Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease, spinal cord injury, diabetes, and other tragic illnesses found renewed hope for a cure – if not for them, for generations to come.

All Senator Frist had to do was schedule a vote on expanding stem cell research. Nobody demanded that he do anything more. One simple vote on the bill that had already passed easily through the House, and it would be placed on President Bush's desk to test his veto threat.

Senator Frist may think that we've forgotten his promise – we need to make clear that we have not. The radical right wing cannot be allowed to trump the will of the vast majority of Americans again. This is far too important.

Each year, over 100,000 people are killed by preventable medical errors, due to negligence or wrongdoing. Many more are seriously or permanently injured, disfigured or disabled.

The leadership in the House of Representatives is promoting legislation, written by the insurance industry and HMOs, which would restrict the ability of Americans injured by medical malpractice to hold accountable those who caused them harm.

Thanks to the Organic Food Production Act passed in 1990, the USDA is supposed to require that all cows have access to pasture if milk is labeled "organic."

But this rule is largely undefined, and as a result, major factory farmers have been selling their milk as "organic" when really their cows are kept in cramped feedlots - only let out to pasture when they're not producing milk.

Now agribusiness wants to make this loophole into a law - pressuring the USDA to adopt a new rule that would allow an organic label whether or not animals have access to open pasture.

But this is not what consumers want - the majority of people surveyed by Consumer's Union believe that milk labeled as organic should mean the cows that produce it have grazed outdoors.

If you don't want your organic milk to come from a feedlot, make your voice heard!
Stop the War on Women: Don't Let Pharmacists Deny Contraceptive Prescriptions

The "morning-after pill," or Plan B, is a legally approved medication.

But in a unanimous vote of consideration last week, the Washington State Board of Pharmacy took a step towards giving pharmacists the legal right to refuse to dispense emergency contraceptives, or any other medication, on moral grounds. The justification? If someone is denied Plan B, or any other medication at one pharmacy, they can just go to another.

But for women in rural areas, their local pharmacy is often the ONLY pharmacy in the neighborhood. If the "morning-after pill" must be taken within 72 hours after intercourse, these women will be powerless to prevent unintended pregnancy. While emergency contraception is the catalyst behind this proposed law, it would set a dangerous precedent for all medications, giving pharmacists the power to "morally" object to doling out any other prescription: AIDS/HIV medications, STD medications, obesity treatments; what about condoms?

What's at stake has nothing to do with health - it has everything to do with control and imposing subjective morality. This proposal represents a blatant discrimination against women and a clear violation of consumer rights.

Send a message to the Washington State Board of Pharmacy and the governor; we don't want any state to moralize our access to prescriptions.

Take Action

Rape: it’s a horrible thing that no woman chooses.
Yet as it stands now, when a survivor of rape enters the emergency room, she is not always given the chance to prevent pregnancy.

To address this troubling problem, members of Congress have proposed the Compassionate Assistance for Rape Emergencies Act (“CARE”: S.1264/H.R.2928).

This bill would ensure that when survivors of sexual assault enter the emergency room, they are always offered the emergency contraception pill (EC) as an option.

EC is a concentrated dose of ordinary birth-control pills that can dramatically reduce a woman's chance of becoming pregnant if taken soon after sex or sexual assault. It is NOT the same thing as mifepristone, or RU 486, which terminates an already-established pregnancy.

Making EC an option for all rape survivors that enter the emergency room would ensure that they have a choice in the aftermath of their assault.

Last month, this pillar of corporate social responsibility was sold to L'Oreal, the world's largest cosmetics company known for its popular brands such as Maybelline, Kiehl's and Lancome. Now, we're at risk of losing an important ally in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

America's wealth and ingenuity is second to none, so shouldn't every child have health insurance and the care they need to grow-up healthy?

Today, nearly ten million children are uninsured and millions more lack coverage for the services that they need most. An additional 29 million are at risk of losing their coverage. Our nation must make health insurance a priority for all children, with a commitment to preserve and expand federal safety net programs under Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

Congress is beginning a period of critical debate that will influence the future of children’s health insurance programs. Some legislators seek to eliminate gaps in coverage, while others advocate cutting back on existing programs that are a lifeline to health care.

These programs are essential; they serve low-income families who have no other way to get health insurance for their children. Cuts to these programs would particularly affect the lives of children with disabilities, who depend on them for the occupational, physical and speech therapy that allows them to live healthy, successful and independent lives.

It's common sense that women should have ready access to their doctor-prescribed birth control. Unfortunately, the anti-choice movement, spearheaded by groups like Pharmacists for Life, disagrees.

According to Karen Brauer, president of Pharmacists for Life, birth control pills are out of bounds while Viagra prescriptions are not. She won't fill prescriptions for the morning-after pill and has lectured women about daily birth control pills. Yet she readily fills Viagra prescriptions and has claimed, "I helped a whole lot of old married men get lucky."

We want Congress to change all that. The bipartisan Access to Legal Pharmaceuticals Act would ensure that every woman in every state can get her prescription for birth control filled, whether or not an individual pharmacist has an objection.

Support this commonsense measure by signing the petition!
Take Action

Soon after the tragedy of 9/11, Congress passed legislation to upgrade the nation’s capacity to respond to acts of bioterrorism and other public health emergencies. The statute's authorization expired on September 30th.

New legislation pending before Congress would shore up emergency preparedness measures and improve public health capabilities at the state and local level. Passing this bill is vital to the nation's homeland security and the nation's health. Congress's failure to act would put all of us at risk.

While considerable progress has been achieved in improving America's health emergency preparedness, the nation is still not adequately prepared to respond to the health threats posed by diseases, disasters and bioterrorism. And while there is no way to be 100 percent prepared, there are still basic achievable levels of preparedness the nation has yet to meet. Americans deserve better.

Tell Congress to pass this essential legislation upon their return to Washington in November.
Take Action

Don't let Congress Contaminate Food Safety Laws

News that more than 100 people have fallen ill from fresh spinach contaminated with E. coli bacteria highlights the need for the government to do MORE to protect the safety of our food. But Congress is heading in the opposite direction by proposing to do away with many of the state laws and regulations that protect the safety of our food.

On July 27, the U.S. Senate held a hearing on the "Uniformity for Food Act," a bill that will put a strait jacket on states' ability to keep milk, seafood and most other food safe for the consumer. The bill nullifies many state food safety or labeling laws that are not "identical" to federal law, including state laws that deal with problems the federal government doesn't even address.

The Food Uniformity Act would wipe out more than 200 laws in all 50 states, many of which have HIGHER safety standards than those outlined in the Food Uniformity Act!

Fortunately, the bill still isn't law. Although it passed the House in March, we have a good chance of defeating it in the Senate. With ever-growing opposition, (including 21 Senators, 39 state Attorney Generals, the Association of Food and Drug Officials, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, several governors, and a host of consumer, public health, and environmental groups) this bill can be defeated.

AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country's critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.

AmeriCorps' achievements have been impressive:

Thousands of homes have been built;

Hundreds of thousands of seniors have been given the care they need to live independently;

Millions of children have been tutored.

Senator Evan Bayh has proposed revamping national service programs and dramatically expanding opportunities for public service. "Family values." Anti-choice politicians just love using this catch-phrase to support the inaccurate, unproven "abstinence-only" programs they're forcing our nation's schools to teach.

The U.S. has the highest teen-pregnancy rates in the Western industrialized world, so we think it's about time to set the record straight: Misleading young people about sex and birth control is NOT a "family value," it's setting our kids up for greater rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

We're working for change - and accurate sex education - by inviting parents around the country to sign on to the Parents' Petition to support accurate sex education in our schools.

Are you a parent? Do you know a parent? Then sign the Parents' Petition to oppose "abstinence-only" programs and support the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act, legislation that would set up the first-ever federal sex-education program!

As parents, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles – we all want our young loved ones to grow up to be informed, responsible and safe.

Meet Henry Wanyoike. His story begins in Kenya – where he was being groomed to join an elite team of runners. But in 1995, he had a stroke that left him blind.

Rather than surrendering to his condition, Henry entered a program for the blind, supported by Christian Blind Mission International (CBMI). There he received enough support and training to help him become self-sufficient, without his sight.

What's more, Henry began to run again. With the help of a guide runner, he quickly established himself as a world-class non-sighted runner, earning a spot on the Kenyan national squad in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.

Now Henry is running again - this time to raise awareness and support for a cause dear to his heart – the Christian Blind Mission International's (CBMI) 100,000 Miracles campaign.

The 100,000 Miracles Campaign seeks to help the 17 million people who are blind because of cataracts. Eighty-five percent of these people live with blindness because they can't afford the simple operation to help them see again. CBMI's goal is to see 100,000 cataract surgeries performed in 100 days.

You can help Henry set a new world record for visually impaired runners and raise awareness about CBMI's 100,000 Miracles campaign.

Sign below with a message of your choice to support Henry in this courageous effort! Your name and comment will be delivered directly to Henry through CBMI.
Take Action

Impending Medicare cuts threaten to limit women's access to lifesaving screenings and treatment at the very point in their lives when they are at the greatest risk of developing breast cancer.

If the cuts occur, many physicians – from oncologists to pathologists and from radiologists to surgeons – will be forced to cut back on their services for our aging population. Stop dirty chickens!
Tests by Consumer Reports have shown that the rate of campylobacter contamination found in supermarket chickens has almost doubled since 2003!

Campylobacter and salmonella are the two disease-causing bacteria that can be found in chicken. These two organisms made more than 3.4 million people sick and killed 700 in the most recent year for which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compiled data.

Campylobacter not only causes stomach problems, but can also lead to meningitis, arthritis, and Guillian-Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder.

The USDA has no standards, rules, or limits on campylobacter. Consumers Union petitioned the USDA in 2002 to set a standard for campylobacter, but the agency took no action.

Pledge to Bring Clean Water AND Children's Laughter to Rural Africa

Access to clean water is a very serious problem for more than one billion people. But this doesn't have to be the case. This holiday season, you can help children in Africa have fun and be healthy. The PlayPump International water system pumps clean water while children play on a merry-go-round.

Did you know that water-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the world? And did you also know that:

The average person in rural Africa must walk five miles to the nearest water source;

Girls and women spend a total of over 200 million hours per day collecting water from often polluted sources; and

The average five-gallon container of water weighs about 40 pounds.

The award-winning PlayPumps design is a great solution! So far, nearly 700 PlayPumps have been installed near schools in South Africa, and with your help PlayPumps can bring clean drinking water to another 10 million people by 2010.
