There's is a tough area, where animals are often lost or "dumped" and the staff is a highly caring and concerned group who take time with individuals and families to make certain the best results, for pets and people, are available.

There is a great effort among the volunteers and the staff to make the time the animals spend at the shelter as comfortable and pleasant as it can be and an even greater effort and commitment to make their time at the shelter as short as possible and to get the animals into good homes.

Amazingly, this is such a great city shelter, not only because the facility is fairly new indoor/outdoor kennels, but because dogs are cared for so well by the wonderful staff and volunteers that it sometimes seems that the dogs are happier than they have ever been in their lives! Many dogs arrive at the shelter traumatized and terrified and have been victims of obvious neglect and staff and volunteers make every effort to re-socialize, groom and give them the affection they may never have experienced. It's amazing to see the transformation of so many dogs into happy, healthy animals! The next challenge is always to find them good homes or a rescue, which is a race against time! I think the Harbor Shelter, although it is not a no-kill shelter, is an example of how any big city shelter could work more efficiently, with a committed and dedicated band of staff and volunteers working together to save animals' lives!

Harbor Animal Care Center used to be on Battery St. and this is where we adopted our baby. There are wonderful, caring people at Harbor who do everything they can to help the babies get adopted. They do the best and the most with what they have. Please help them to help other four-legged babies! Vote for them!!!!!

Harbor Animal Care Center has a beautiful, clean facility, with great, staff and volunteers working hard to find homes for dogs, cats, rabbits, and any other abandoned animals. Mercedes, the volunteer supervisor, does excellent work organizing the volunteers, coming up with incentives and activities to encourage pet adoption. The staff and volunteers take a sincere active role in caring for these abandoned pets and giving them a good life while they wait for a new home!
