Our dog Shirley (called Christy when she was with Animal Friends) was rescued from a house in Forward Township, where she was kept in a basement with 70 other abused animals. Animal Friends nursed her back to health and, in October, 2005, my wife and met her. Due to a lack of nutrition, lack of room in a small cage, or a break that was never set, Shirley's left paw is deformed. When we met Shirley, she was shaking and cowering in her kennel. After seeing her big brown eyes and hearing her sad tale, we knew we were meant for each other. Shirley did not bark for eight months. One day she barked, looked at us and wagged her tail--which she never did. Shirley had awakened from her nightmare. Although she is still shy around strangers more than four years after her adoption, Shirley loves other animals; probably because they kept her company in that house of horrors. She is kind and polite, loves the sofa and tolerates her feline siblings, Nick and Nora. Thanks to Animal Friends, we have the best friend we could ever imagine.
