Salt Lake county animal service is striving to become a no kill shelter. They have implemented the Pitcrew program into the shelter. They recognized a need for education about this breed and teaching responsible ownership. They offer 6 weeks of CGC to any pitbull from their program for FREE any other dog from the shelter of community can take these classes for $40. They have recently implemented playgroups for the dogs. There are 6 playgroups with anywhere from 7-15 dogs in a group. This has been so good for the dogs well being and state of mind. It also helps staff to learn more about the dogs behavior for potential adopters. They have also recently remodeled the cat rooms and made cat colonies. The cats are no longer in cages and can freely roam around the colony. This is also great for the cats mental well being and gives the potential adopters the ability to interact better.

Salt Lake County Animal Services is a government run shelter with a less than 1% kill rate. They are striving to be a no kill shelter. They also have a program called the Pit Bull Crew that not only helps get bull breeds adopted from their shelter but also educates people about this breed and at times provides free services for them, like spay/neuter, shots and microchips. They also provide free obedience training if you rescue a bully breed from their shelter.

SLCoAS is soooooo close to being a completely No Kill Shelter which is fantastic for a government funded shelter. They have a good record of temperment testing to make sure the animals get to homes that fit, and have receintly started doggie play groups for the ones that are still at the shelter..

SLCo AS is absolutely one of the most amazing shelters I have ever heard of. They are funded by the county and they have been able to achieve a no-kill status running just on government funds. This is something most shelters that run off of private donations aren't able to do! You should be asking yourself 'what the heck is wrong with them?' If SLCo AS can do it than any privately owned shelter worth it's salt should be able to do the same thing.
