The results are in and the checks are in the mail. The Grand Prize winner of Our second "America's Favorite Animal Shelter" contest is ...

Saint John Animal Rescue League of Saint John, New Brunswick!

Saint John Animal Rescue League (ARL) is a standalone animal shelter serving the Saint John and greater Saint John area in New Brunswick, Canada. Founded in 1913, ARL sees over 4,000 animals a year and receives no public funding. ARL's dedicated staff and volunteers look after all of the lost and unwanted animals in their community, and serve all kinds of animals - dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles, and any other wonderful animals that need help and a home. "These little fellows in our shelter deserve a chance," says Janet Foster, ARL's Executive Director. "All they ask is for someone to love them."

ARL is in need of a new shelter to better serve the community and animals in need, and this $10,000 prize will be a great kick-off to their capital campaign. ARL will be putting this prize money into a "New Building" account along with the additional $100 donated the two "top recruiters" from Saint John who won $50 each for soliciting the most votes during this contest. Thank you Erica Scholten and Bobbi Betteridge!

Second place winner Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation, Inc. (MHWF) is is dedicated to providing qualified homes for any horse in need. MHWF is an all volunteer organization doing amazing work to rescue and adopt out horses. Many people don't realize how great the need for horse rescue is already due to problems of backyard breeding and the great expense of caring for a horse. With the growing recession MHWF volunteers are seeing a rise in people who can no longer afford to keep their horses. The $1,000 prize will go toward veterinarian bills.

Third place winner Magnificent Mutts is all-volunteer, non-profit animal shelter that through education, training and fund raising, is dedicated to caring for and finding good homes for all breeds of dogs that are abandoned, abused, neglected, or in need of assistance for any reason. The $1,000 prize will either go toward a fund to eventually get a small shelter building - right now all rescued animals are cared for in volunteer foster homes - or to immediate vet billsfor the many rescued dogs who need medical treatment.
