"An ORCHID in AUSTRALIA"
The Discovery of the Wadalba Orchid
Thelymitra Adorata, by Care2 member Boris Branwhite-
"This is an example of how someone with a sharp eye can completely change the development plans of an entire shire -- the orchid is a new species I found in 1997/8, had described by botanists at the botanical gardens in melbourne, arranged for the publication and disemination of the description, applied for endangered status on the threatened species list, and caused developers to give over 200 hectares of native bushland to the public, and had their wall to wall housing development almost halved. A sharp eye, a good camera, and access to orchid identification books, and you can do it too -- there are many new orchids in Australia yet to be discovered, named, and protected. This one [see photo above] is Thelymitra adorata, the Wyong Sun Orchid, [now called the Wadalba Orchid] less than 100 plants known." -Boris's website is at http://www.tree4life.com/

EDUCATION - ENCOURAGEMENT - EXAMPLE
.What I Owe Wilf Dews, Rhona and John Dorman.
These 3 E's are how wildlife protector Wilf Dews summed up his philosophy. Born in 1909 in Teralba on the shores of Lake Macquarie, NSW, Mr Dews was passionate about the Australian environment and about educating Australians about the importance of ecology. He was one of the founding members of the Newcastle Flora and Fauna Proctection Society, NSW, active in the 60s and 70s. As a 10 year old I was fortunate to tag along on fieldtrips with the Flora and Fauna Society. and to listen and learn from Wilf Dews, John Dorman, et al. It's satisfying to know that I was part of the effort that stopped a highway from ploughing through Newcastle's beautiful Blackbutt Reserve; that raised awareness of the importance of wetlands; that planted trees throughout the Hunter Valley; and investigated eroding creekbanks.

...
My motivation for co-hosting here in An Orchid In Australia is to Educate, to Encourage, and to provide Example, in honour of Wilf Dews' life work.

An Orchid In Australia's SPECIAL MEMBERS-
our founder/host ethnoecologist Theodore Grishaber,
environmentalist/bloggist Boris Branwhite
and Tony Fields (Whale Call Cafe)

Conservation and protection of a region, plant or animal involves vigilance, research, fieldwork, recording, utilizing the media, and legal procedures. But the vigilance doesn't end when a preservation ruling is in place. New threats can and do arise to endanger the protected region, plant or animal species at any time. Sounds exasperating and frustrating? Yet this is the life of Boris Branwhite. One week he's discovering orchids (see photo and next paragraph), the next he's out on the ocean saving whales. Then in a blink you'll find him inland educating people about the Eastern Grey Kangaroo's in-built population control. Read his blog... I'm sure you'll be impressed.
