Recently, I heard about all the great benefits of merino wool as a sustainable, eco-friendly clothing material. So I was surprised and upset to see the recent vid put out by Peta. Working part-time at Any Mountain -- an outdoor clothing & equipment retailer -- I was especially interested in learning more about the brands we carry in the store. Two brands in particular I was looking into: Icebreaker and Smartwool. While both claim to be sustainable & eco-friendly there weren't too many specifics on their websites regarding the source of their fabulous wool.
I kept investigating and guess what I found posted by one of our very own Care2 members..."Manufacturing giant SmartWool recently announced a deal to buy merino wool exclusively from New Zealand farmers who pledge to end mulesing by the end of 2005." Woo hoo! Yeah, Smartwool! I guess I can keep that new shirt I bought after all. :) Icebreaker also gets their wool from New Zealand sheeps however I'm yet to find proof of that they too exclusively use farmers who make the pledge.
