The most important thing you can do this year to end extreme poverty is vote on November 7th.
Extreme poverty impacts almost every aspect of our nation's foreign policy and contradicts our core values. Since ONE's launch two years ago, over 2.4 million people and 100 of the world's most respected humanitarian organizations have joined together in an unprecedented alliance to help the world's poorest nations. This November is the first time that we, as ONE members, will cast ballots and add our voices to the electoral process.
Sign the ONE Voter pledge — a pledge to educate yourself, your community, and to vote on Election Day. Together, we are building an organized constituency of Americans who are taking concrete steps to end extreme poverty. Over the next six weeks, ONE members will host events in their homes, places of worship, and cities, educating themselves about how America can do even more to fight AIDS and poverty around the world.
We'll use the ONE Voter Pledge to reach out to people who want to learn how to get more involved. The pledge is a tool to raise global poverty awareness in communities across the country. Your one conversation or email might seem like a small contribution. But, in concert with millions of other ONE members, a pledge to vote and talk about global poverty is an important step toward enabling the world's poorest nations to rise out of poverty.
To win the fight against extreme poverty, we must make it a national priority. Please vote and make your voice and your priorities heard in the democratic process.
1) Darfur Effort Said to Face Collapse. http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051906R.shtml Jan Egeland, the chief United Nations aid coordinator, told the Security Council today that conditions in Darfur have deteriorated so drastically that the international assistance effort there faces collapse in weeks.
2) Chad-Sudan Emergency: Progress and Setbacks.
http://www.unrefugees.org/emergency.cfm On May 5, the government of Sudan and the main rebel group in Darfur signed a peace accord calling for the end of hostilities in the region. The agreement brings a ray of hope to the victims of this horrific crisis, most of whom are women and children.
3) On April 30, we made history when over 75,000 of us mobilized to stop the genocide in Darfur.
The day after the rallies in Washington D.C. and around the country, President Bush sent a top State Department official to Abuja, Nigeria, to pressure the Sudanese government and rebels to sign a peace agreement and to allow more peacekeepers into the field to stop the murders, rapes and burning of villages.
Since the rallies, I’ve received hundreds of e-mails from people asking for my advice about what they can do next.
Our Sudan Relief and Advocacy Fund provides vital humanitarian assistance for the people of Darfur, including:
Food aid – more essential than ever because the World Food Program has been forced to cut in half its emergency rations for three million people in Darfur;
Life-saving surgery, vaccination campaigns and urgent health care for people in both Darfur and Chad;
Emergency health services for victims of gender-based violence, as well as pre- and post-natal care;
Primary education for girls and “safe space” projects for children and teenagers living in camps.
Change is beginning to happen – but the peace agreement is fragile and there is still a long road ahead. Until all parties sign on and the agreement goes into full effect, and until the Janjaweed is disarmed and the Security Council authorizes UN peacekeepers to go into Darfur, people remain at risk.
The Earth Force United Organizations ideals are simple.
1) To work towards Peace and to Oppose War as a way of settling differences.
2) To Unite People and bring them information on World Events and what they can do to change them.
3) We work towards the END of Human and Civil Rights abuses of ALL peoples of the world.
4) We work towards the end of Animal Abuse and towards Environmental Sanity.
5) We believe that PEACE is PATRIOTIC.
This group is for all Peace Activists to discuss ways of ending the war peacefully and to bring an end to human suffering. Freedom is for everyone. Not just the rich and powerful. Together we can make the world a better place. Remember, We only have one planet.
