This group was
created to respond to revelations in the press that teen girls are regularly
raped by military recruiters.
Under the "No
Child Left Behind" Act, high schools are required to provide recruiters
with private information about students - including counseling records, drug
use, family structure, and the private cell phone numbers of underage girls.
Using this information, their power as gatekeepers, and the prestige of wearing the uniform of our country, the soldiers rape
underage girls, typically in government offices and cars. The Government Accounting Office
(GAO) reported more than 1000 incidents in two years, and that 1 of every
200 recruiters was disciplined for sexual misconduct last year alone. Nearly
all of these rapists were "handled administratively" rather than prosecuted.
(Be sure to "note" the story, by clicking the yellow sticky note, if you haven't done so already.)
!!__Hands
OFF exists to force an end to sexual assault on our daughters
by soldiers. Your participation in this campaign is appreciated. We especially
need participants who have the following:
connections to organizations of women, parents, teachers, and veterans.
connections to organizations of high school students, including sports leagues
and student governments.
knowledge of how to deliver petitions to political leaders.
skills in writing, strategy,
and publicity.
…and a few
lawyers might come in very handy. ;~}
If all you can do is sign a petition (when we have one) and pass it on to a
friend, that's fantastic!
