Group Guidelines - please review October 22, 2006 2:27 PM
The goal here is civil and substantive discourse. It's indeed challenging given topics about which one has passion. However, if members adopt an appreciation for critical assessment and pursue understanding beyond rhetorical sound bites, perhaps we'll all learn something...even if all parties don't necessarily agree. While humour is appreciated and personal tiffs may occur, the overall focus is respecting the 'sacred space' of other discussants by keeping these to a minimum.
In addition to theConnect Code of Conduct, other guidelines are:
1. Please do not post large or extensive graphic material as some users have slow connections. Use URLs where possible.
2. Please avoid posts beyond three screens. To post an article, use a combination of the URL and selective text.
3. If a post is deleted, please contact the host via Network Messaging for discussion and resolution.
4. If you post a link to a petition, please honour the spirit of this group by introducing a point of discussion or debate for other participants. No spam.
5. Please do not post links to other forum discussions. We welcome your introduction of the topic for discussion here.
6. Please review the list of topics before opening a new one, in the event your subject has already been covered.
7. While there is some latitude to blow off steam or jockey with fellow members, this is not a chat room. Your efforts to keep the discussion moving and on topic are appreciated, and respectful of other members.
Thank you for your cooperation. These guidelines are for the purpose of improving the quality of discourse and exchange with fellow members.

Reminder August 08, 2007 10:43 AM
Given the rash of posts by members who either join to submit an item for Note It and then unjoin, or those who've joined and post petitions or other Shares without further participation, I thought it time for a reminder regarding the guidelines and purpose of this group. Please review them in the opening post above.
Hot Debates and Shocking News is a venue for discussing and/or debating current events or hot topics in the news, or politics. Our goal is to do so intelligently and civilly from an informed perspective, or with a willingness to substantiate assertions wherever possible. It is not, however, a place to post hyperbolic articles or sound bites in place of one's own critical thinking. Nor is it a group where members attempt to draw others to their blogs, or submit a share or petition in order to accumulate the most signatures/notes. If the topic is important, it is worthy of discussion with introductory points or questions which are either evident in the OP, or queried by that poster. Any future items placed here for the sole purpose of collecting notes, signatures, or to 'spam' will be deleted.

Time for another reminder November 20, 2008 1:57 PM
Though it isn't as if most of you should need one; you're long term members and know the drill.
Review the guidelines of this group and honour them. If you cannot, remove yourself from the membership, because you will find your posts deleted or end up in a timeout.
There are other groups on Care2 where free-for-all is permitted. This isn't one of them and I will never make any apology for that. Nor am I going to argue about it.
