URGENT: Animals Asia needs our help to fight dog cull in China
06/15/09

Dog cull - Hanzhong City, China

11 June 2009
The city authorities of Hanzhong city, Shaanxi Province, China, recently instigated a policy of killing dogs indiscriminately in order to try and achieve a "dog free city", following a number of cases of rabies this year. Ordinary citizens are being encouraged to participate in the killing; a banner even went up outside a government building urging citizens to "mobilise everyone to kill dogs". As a result, groups of people have been stalking the streets with poles and sticks, brutally beating to death any dog they come across.

No dogs are safe. Street dogs, owned dogs, puppies, and even dogs that have been vaccinated and neutered and live with families in their apartments, are all being killed. Dogs are left dead or dying, piled in the streets, to be eventually collected by the city authorities.

Animals Asia is committed to stopping the slaughter. To this end we have provided funds for local animal welfare groups to visit Hanzhong to document the atrocities and to lobby the local authorities. Through them, we have tried to engage the authorities in Hanzhong in dialogue, and provided them with information on trap-neuter-release, dog registration, and vaccination programmes, similar to those adopted internationally.

You can help support our efforts to battle this atrocity by writing to your local Chinese embassy, explaining politely but firmly that the policy is cruel, heartless and ineffective, and paints the people and government of Hanzhong in a very poor light.

Urge the Chinese authorities to persuade the Hanzhong government to abandon this carnage in favour of a humane trap-neuter-release and vaccination programme, as recommended by the WHO, and animal welfare organisations worldwide.
Never underestimate the power of letters. We encourage you to send a letter to the relevant government or organisation concerned, from your own email address. You can copy and paste the letter below or write a letter with your own message. We believe that sending it from your personal account has a greater impact on the recipient than receiving multiple emails sent through our website.

Group Email & Settings

Be sure to adjust your email settings so that you’ll receive our host announcements as they are periodically updated. Those who wish to be more actively involved may choose to receive a summary of posts on a “Daily” or “Weekly” basis. Doing so will also help to insure that you’re up to date with important group topics, goals and events.  Members who join with the intention to support this cause but have serious time restrictions should choose the “Web Only” setting and then try to make sure to visit each time you’re on-line.

Emailing Protocol

As a matter of organization and time management, the following guidelines are suggested with regard to email protocol. Please do your best to follow these methods as we will never be able to achieve our goals if we are not efficient with our efforts. Most importantly, these guidelines will help ease problem of bulk mail in our Care2 email accounts.

Following these suggestions will save us a lot of time and allow us to spend more time on behalf of the cause(s), like the animals we care so much about. It will free up more time for signing more petitions with comments and the noting of news, writing letters, attending rallies and spreading the word, etc. These suggestions are outlined in effort to improve communication between group members and are aimed toward avoiding the result of members blocking each other’s mass repeated emails. As a matter of necessity members who have been away for a day or so often resort to deleting emails which result in numerous emails never even being read.

As a basic rule of thumb, please adjust your individual care2 email account settings according to your personal preference.  Also please refrain from inundating fellow members with duplicate mass emails and instead review the Discussion Topics and post your Petitions and News to Note there when ever possible. We’ll all benefit by posting important issues this way by reaching a larger number of people in a shorter amount of time.

Please be considerate not to inundate fellow members with information which is easily accessible through the care2 website and, or your group home page(s). We ask that members use the discussion topics on our home page to post Special Needs and/ or Urgent information including Petitions and News to Note. However for those special occasions when members must circulate Petitions and News to Note due to pure urgency, please always be sure to put the Petition Name or a brief description in the Subject Line of each email so that members on the receiving end of your email can easily decipher the mail they need to open.  Oftentimes people get excited about certain topics, but please remember that not all your friends are from the same group and therefore they may not share in all the same interests. Please follow these same guidelines for circulating News to Note through email by inserting the Article Headline or a Topic Summary such as Animal Welfare, Environment or Politics, etc in the subject line of each email.  Lastly; oftentimes people forward your email and remove the FWD text from the subject line; however this creates frustration for many members because of wasted time opening multiple duplicates of the same email. Therefore please refrain from this practice unless you have expanded your circulation to Friends of Friends as outlined below.

Welcome!
04/04/08

Welcome

This is a supportive group for those who want to make a change in the world, specifically by taking action to help animals in peril.  If you're looking for ways to make a difference; a place to find inspiration; a place to give you strength and a place where like-minded people will support you, you've come to the right place.

We are taking action toward the abolishment of animal cruelty by increasing the exposure of the atrocities and enlightening those who may not otherwise see a need for change. We want to put an end to the vicious slaughtering, the cruel testing and the exportation of animals for the same. We want to ban the fur trades, stop the hunting and end the illusion of the alleged glamour and or/strength associated with these atrocities.  We want to arouse an awakening in spirit by leaders’ world wide that have become conditioned or influenced to allow these acts of violence to continue. We want to do all these things and much, much more toward ending animal cruelty and bringing animal welfare issues to the forefront of consciousness.

Our Billboard is full of useful information, links & resources with a focus on China’s fur trade as a primary target in our mission toward ending animal cruelty.  There is a combination of Take Action links specifically dealing with China’s fur trade.  These action activities include simple things such as signing on-line petitions and sending automated emails.  For those with a little more time, there’s also information about writing letters to retailers as well as organizing rallies in your area and more. The Billboard is set up to also include resource information on a variety of related animal welfare and environmental issues.  Most of these are provided at the base of the Billboard, within the Discussion Topics and within the Host Shares and Web Feeds.

As you read through you’ll find that our interests go far beyond the cruelty of the fur trades.  We share in the love and respect for all animals and their habitats.  We care deeply about finding ways to lessen the impact of the footprints we leave on our planet. We are highly motivated toward finding more ways to better share our world with the animal kingdom.  We are especially sensitive with regard to the issues of animal cruelty, their suffering and any killing of animals.  Our concerns include the need for zoo reform, the abolishment factory farming, hunting, euthanasia, culls, animals testing and more. In sum we deeply value the lives and spirits of all animals and we have joined here to ban together in order to make a difference.

If you haven’t already done so, please join us.  Let’s make a difference together.

General Guidelines

Please consider being open to our suggested email protocol as we will never be able to achieve our goals if we are not efficient with our efforts. Also please check in by visiting our group page often for updates, announcements and more.

Get involved by posting in the Discussion Topics, by post important related news on issues that we may be tracking or by suggesting a relative issue that you would like others in our group to take action on.  You may also place a group tag on a recent Share/ Alert that you have posted; one that relates to our cause and focuses on a situation that needs more attention.

Please be inspired to email us a link to a recent Share/ Blog that you’ve recently posted- one that may show off the essence of your kindred creatures; for example pictures of your pets or other animals that you have bonded with.  Keep these types of Share/Blogs upbeat to help inspire more people to develop positive relationships and stronger bonds with animals.

For more information on posting Shares with group tags please refer to this Topic under the Discussions.
