Oil Pulling February 19, 2007 10:34 AM

Have you all heard about this? I can't personally testify to its ability to cure serious diseases--although the theory behind it makes sense, but I can be a witness to the fact that it does make teeth whiter, and fast. I tried it a few monthes ago then stopped when I ran out of sesame oil. I'm going to start it up again.  [ send green star]

This is a new one to me.  Does it taste nasty?

Nah, its no biggie. I used sesame oil so it just tasted slightly nutty. The hard part is restraining from swallowing, as you're supposed to swish for 15-20 minutes.  [ send green star]
 February 20, 2007 7:29 AM

Very interesting! I could see how not swallowing it could a bit tricky ...

excellent results! February 22, 2007 11:15 AM

I've been doing oil pulling for about a week, using sunflower oil. The first day was difficult, as I wanted to get the stuff out of my mouth pronto, but every day after has been fine. Saliva thins it out as you swish. I try to swish for at least 5 minutes. The results: my teeth are brighter, my gums have been feeling better, swelling has gone down. When I do it at night, I wake up with clean-feeling teeth, no plaque! I got a sinusy cold right after starting and have heard that's common, as the oil stimulates a cleanse of sinuses, and I've heard it also has a cleansing effect on the bowels too. Old ayurvedic trick. Sunflower and sesame seem to be the favored oils. Glad to see this posted! Thanks for starting this topic--it's a great addition to the daily routine :o)  [ send green star]

update February 24, 2007 8:46 AM

Just to let you know how it's been going... The first week of oil pulling triggered massive sinus evacuation! I got a mild sinusy cold which is pretty much gone now, and after my morning oil swishing I went through a lot of tissues. As if years of backed up stuff is finally able to leave! Yay! While I was dealing with stopped up sinuses, I tried the ayurvedic technique of sniffing (snorting?) a drop of oil on each side and within moments I could feel the blockages relaxing and opening up. So, it's good to have a fresh box of tissues handy once you start!  [ send green star]
 February 26, 2007 6:36 AM

I did it over the weekend, and ... I experienced the opposite: my sinuses went clear as day ... never felt better! I was very surprised ... also ... lots of energy and a feeling of well being! Loved it!

The only question I do have: how long are you supposed to do it for? Every day? Once a week? A few times a week?

 [ send green star]
 February 26, 2007 7:29 AM

This whole thing amazes me. It seems illogical, ya know?  [ send green star]
 February 26, 2007 7:33 AM

I know ... plus ... I was thinking: how healthy is to swish all those toxins on your mouth for 20 minutes? But ... I loved the results! I just cleaned my mouth really well after - for another 10 minutes or so with both water and organic mouthwash. So ... ... I gave the info to some of my friends to try it also!  [ send green star]
 February 28, 2007 10:51 AM

I told my mom and she told me that she used to do it years ago. She'll start again.

I also came across this site with quite a bit of feedback on this. Interesting how different people respond differently to this!

Finally March 12, 2007 10:07 AM

Today I remembered to oil-pull first thing in the morning. I do it upon waking because you're not supposed to take anything orally for an hour before. So I just make it a first thing activity, but was having trouble getting started this time. see how clean my teeth are?

I've been doing it regularly now ... It was hard to get used to it .... but now I have the oil bottle on the night stand ... that's the first thing I do when I wake up .... I thought I'll do it for a month straight, and then cut down to twice a week.  What do you think?

I also tried it with sesame seed oil ... it was hard and unpleasant! The best (for me ... ) is sunflower oil (organic) ... light and not as strong tasting ...

 [ send green star]
 March 12, 2007 10:59 AM

Yeah the sesame oil has a stronger taste, thats what I'm using for now though, since I already have a bottle. I think sure go ahead experiment with how often to do it. I've heard on the other end of the spectrum you can do it three times a day, but I'm not up for that! You should do what feels right for you, if you're eating healthy and organic, and taking care of yourself, you probably don't have too much toxic material.  [ send green star]
 March 12, 2007 12:51 PM

True ... yet I do have years ... years of ingesting/aquiring toxic materials though ...

anonymous Oil Pulling March 13, 2007 6:10 AM

Good Morning everyone.  I am new to this site and just hear of oil pulling yesterday. I have studied massage therapy and touched on Ayurveda but still am at a loss.  Let me explain my situation.

My son is 11yrs old and around Feb 11 he developed a large mass in the inguinal area.(around peach pit size)  There was slight discoloration and my initial thought was hernia. It did not protrude more on coughing so I had my doubts about that I took him to the doctor within an hours time. The doc said it looked like a hernia but was not. My son had an ant bite looking sore on his leg so the doc thought it maybe an infection (staph) Chris (my son) was put on Bactrim for 2 wks. He developed an allergic reaction with one pill left.  No change in the inguinal lump. Bite mostly gone. At the time He was put on Augmentin for t 2 wks. Slight improvement at the end of treatment (about grape size) Went back to the doc. He wanted to send Chris to a surgen to do a biopsy, because the lymph node had not returned to normal size. I did not think that was the best thing to do. To me this seems like an obvious immune response to something. It didn't make sense that it went down some. Anyway the doc said if it wasnt gone in 2 wks he would start "freaking out". And if anything changed to call him immediatly to schedule the biopsy.  Well guess what It has gotten slightly larger. Not as big as original but non the less larger.  This is where the oil pulling came up.  I am taking him to an accupressurist Friday and she sent me the info on it.  Any feed back?  She also said to try a castor oil compress on the "lymphadenoapothy". I have heard of the benifits for the liver but never the lymph system.

Thanks so much for any info

 March 14, 2007 8:03 AM

WEll I started yesterday.

Maybe it's just my imagination. Since I am already taking doxicyclin for my rosacea my skin was clearing up, but after doing this oil pulling for 2 days my skin was like glass. My teeth seem whiter also. Nothing else to report yet but I will do this for one month and see what develops. thanks for the information. I will tell my mother about this. I am anxious to see if this really helps with the metabolism as I have hypothyroidism.Blessings to all.

Michelle March 14, 2007 10:43 AM

As I understand it, the oil pulling is supposed to stimulate the entire immune system, including the lymphs. I don't have any specific info regarding your son's condition & if the oil-pulling would address it. How is your son doing today? He has had the lymphoadenopathy for a month now, is that right? Does it have any soreness when he walks? If there's rubbing because of the area its in, that could irritate it & make it enlarge. But I would get this checked out, its good you're going to the accupressurist. Have you tried the compress yet? That might help pull out toxins.  [ send green star]
Day 3 oil-pulling, past the Zits stage hopefully March 14, 2007 10:47 AM

Yesterday morning I had Zits! They came and went quickly though. When I noticed them after showering, they were the underground type that even I know better than to squeeze. By midday they had shrunk and were just like slightly blocked pores, and today they're gone. I think the oil-pulling stimulated my skin to do its job a little faster.  [ send green star]
 March 14, 2007 10:54 AM

Hehehe ... I had two zits yesterday too ... the top ones - whitish - and I did squish'em ... around the mouth area ... have't had zits in a long time ...  hope I won't again ....

He looks and feels fine. There was soreness during the first wk but that has gone away. It has been pretty much the same for about a wk now. Will try the castor oil tonight and oil pulling in the morning. I dont know how I will get him to do it for the recommended time. I tried it this morning and spit it out the first time and the second could only do it for a minute or two. We will see!!  [report anonymous abuse]

anonymous update on Chris March 19, 2007 5:51 AM

Thank You all so much for your concern.I was told that Basically chris's immune system is shutting down. The liver and gall-bladder are not functioning right. She is very optimistic though. We both seem to think that the month of super strength antibiotics is playing a role in the functioning of the liver. I will start him on a liver/gall-bladder detox, and possibly a colon clense after that. (if needed) He will also be on a raw food only diet for 2 wks. And I have switched to organic milk. It cost twice as much as regular milk, and she said she does not suggest buying all organic, (there is really no need) but if she could get all of her family and loved ones to do one thing it would be to go with organic milk.

Again I thank you all for your thoughts and concern. And if you wouldn't mind, a prayer would be great. Thanks

About Chris March 19, 2007 8:54 AM

Organic milk is now available in a variety of brands in Supermarkets. It only costs about 1.50 more. You don't need to buy it in Health Stores. Also organic, cage free, free roaming eggs are available at only a few pennies more than eggs whose chickens are sick, caged and pumped full of chemicals.

I'm curious as to why "super antibiotics" are advisable in your sons case when many people are moving away from that these days.

anonymous about chris March 19, 2007 9:10 AM

I'm not sure why. The doctor wanted to do a roemoval of the ndoe after the first does did nothing, but saw I had no insurance so suggseted another round of "the immune killers" is what I like to call them. I did not want to go either route. I was will to pay for a cat scan or mri whatever the least evasive would be but He would not go for that. So Here we are.  [report anonymous abuse]

Organic milk March 19, 2007 10:00 AM

Your accupressurist sounds right on about the milk, lots if not most toxins tend to accumulate in fat. So regular milk from cows pumped with hormones and antibiotics is full of same. I've been told, regarding vegetables & fruits, that the most important things to eat organic are root crops and seeds.  [ send green star]
Getting past the ewwwww factor March 19, 2007 8:44 PM

Okay, I've been trying the oil-pulling.. morning and night. I'm up to about 8-10 minutes.

How do you keep from doing the reflexive swallowing? My mouth keeps filling up, and I HATE spit. I have a weird aversion to it. I almost gag at the feeling of all that stuff in my mouth.

I'm having a really hard time seeing myself get to 15 minutes.

Oh, I've been doing this since Friday night... so, this is my fourth evening. I've not seen any sort of results yet, that I can tell. I'll keep at it.

Please... any hints?

Rene March 20, 2007 6:00 AM

Not having personally tried this oil pulling I can't say first hand how you can keep from swallowing the oil and saliva but from what others have said here that would be quite counterproductive if you do since the object is to pull the toxins from your body in by way of the saliva.

How about cutting the time in half and doing it more than once a day?

 [ send green star]
 March 20, 2007 9:12 AM

I finally got myself some sesame oil and started pulling yesterday. It's not bad at all. Haven't had any problems. Haven't noticed any results but don't know what I'm looking for - guess I'm just trying to pull toxins out of my system. I'm going to continue with this as it is easy and inexpensive see if I get any noticable results I can share.  [ send green star]
 March 20, 2007 8:42 PM

As far as how long to do it, the key thing seems to be doing it long enough for the oil to change into a thin white consistency. As far as the claims for cures--ooh that cure word--I can't personally testify about that. But, Definitely it whitens teeth--I'm a good test case for that because of the tea stains due to my teaholism. I think its the oil in the Bergamot Earl Grey that stains, so it makes sense that like dissolves like, and oil would pull off the stains.

Well I dont know what it was, combination or just one. The the lymph node is completly normal. After just 3 days of oil pulling and a raw food diet, everything is normal.  We tried the clense onse but he couldnt drink it. We will continue with what we are doing for a while. But I imagine He will want some chicken or something before too long. Thanks too all for the great info!!  [report anonymous abuse]

Great to hear, Michelle! Wishing him a speedy and full recovery!

I've been doing the oil pulling for more than two weeks now (maybe more than 3?!? - I wish I woudl've written down the date!) ... and ... my teeth are whiter and my sinus clearer - that's all I can see for now. I'm sure that there are other benefits from pulling the toxins out that are not as easily visible

And I'm very happy that I've convinced my mother to do it too. She's been doing it for a week now

I haven't been a member of this group very long and just yesterday I noticed this thread. I decided to give it a go this morning.

I think I managed only 3 minutes with that in my mouth, but I won't give up. Before I even got it spit out, my nose was running. When I blew it, it was clearer than it's been for a while, so I can only guess that it will continue to get better each day.

Thanks for the info! Maybe I'll have pretty, pearly whites for vacation to the beach this summer (to go along with my new, smaller body-yay).

OIL PULLING WEEK#1 RESULTS March 21, 2007 9:27 AM

Hello All:

well I have been doing this for about 10 days now.

I could not handle the sesame oil. I got a good grade one at the Japanese Store in Little Tokyo Los Angeles. It was too heavy and hard to rinse the taste out of my mouth. Now I use sunflower oil. much lighter and when I swish for 15 min it comes out white. The sesame did not.

I see whiter teeth and a clearer complexion. I also notice my knees getting lighter. For several years I had a dark area on both knees. Later on in life I was told by a practiconer (acupuncturist) that this was due to a weak liver/kidney. I took ACV(still do on a daily basis 2x) but it did not go away. Now it is going away.

Will check in on this again next week.

Cheers and blessings to all

Oils March 21, 2007 9:47 AM

I have cold-expeller pressed sesame oil, and it's "almost" white (consistency is a ga-gillion little bubbles) when I finally spit it out.

Last night, I finally got a full 15 minutes. Yay!

Due to my current lifestyle, I can manage one 15 minute session, at night before bed.

So, I think it's just time, getting used to it (anyone else distract themselves by reading? I even discovered that humming helped!), and persistence.

Thank You so much And yes it was a horrible, horrible, feeling.  That first day in the doctors office was the worst. Keep in mind that since the new year I have lost 3 loved ones, 2 to cancer. And I will be honest, that thought did cross my mind. And with no change after a month (yes I said a month) of antibiotics. It is hard not to worry. I did have some "peace" if you will. I always felt like it was going to be OK. Prayer always left me with that. Thank God!!  But it is hard when everyone you know questions your every move. Any way, I wont ramble on. Wow...  I can hardly wait to try this.  My cards (Tarot) are giving me a big ole thumb's up in asking its effect on me.  I've had lifelong health issues that I am sooooo tired of.

I think I'll start with the sunflower oil.  I just scanned that one site, with all the testimonials (wanna read all of that thoroughly!) and one guy was using olive oil.  And he indicated that he spit it out midway and put a fresh dose of oil in ...'cause he felt the toxins might tend to be reabsorbed or something.

Okay, so it's first out of bed, and swish between teeth and all, no swallowing, spit it out after 20 minutes (and maybe fresh oil midway).  I forgot how much, a tablespoon?

Anyway, this sounds so amazing!

Thank you for the lovely idea of reading email!
Now, I pop in my tablespoon of sesame oil, and set the kitchen timer for 15 minutes, and sit at my laptop with my timer and a dry washcloth (for emergencies), and lose myself until the beeping goes off!

My Dear Hubby says he can see my teeth are a little whiter already. And, he's going to give it a go.

Yeah Kat, you know how it goes with cleansing, you feel a little worse before you feel better. Its no big deal for most of us, if we don't have any serious health issues. Most likely your symptoms will clear up in a few days.

For someone with a lot of health problems, I recommend consulting with your naturopath before doing oil-pulling. When I first tried it monthes ago, I got a strong detox reaction, but I was doing other things as well, a lot of raw food for example, as well as chelating foods, and I think I just got too gung-ho and cleansed faster than my body could cope. This time around its a lot gentler.

 March 29, 2007 11:55 AM

Well, I tried it this morning. Whew. I had to do it twice because the first time I was barely able to keep it in my mouth for more than 30 seconds. The oil was already white. I must be full of toxins. The second time, I held on for about 2 minutes. Tomorrow will be better, I'm sure.

All day I've had an icky feeling in my stomach and I'm not sure if that's realted.

Anna March 29, 2007 1:43 PM

Thats interesting, that the oil turned white after so short of a time. Not sure if that means you're full of toxins, or maybe it could mean your salivary glands work really well. I'm not sure if the toxins that make the oil get thin & white, or if its from mixing with saliva. Everyone: I noticed on the oil-pulling site, at one point it said, to my surprise, to use refined oil. I had thought I read that cold-pressed oil was best. Then later on in the article it says cold-pressed oil is the number one choice, but its ok to use refined if you don't have any virgin oil. I've been using cold-pressed sunflower oil.  [ send green star]
Marie March 29, 2007 2:24 PM

Well, my saliva glands did seem to be working extremely well. In fact, ever since the pulling, my mouth is more moist. Could just be in my head, too, I suppose.

I'll try it again tomorrow and see. I have high hopes.

Marha - I usually brush my teeth first then oil pull then I eat probably about 15-20 minutes later and then of course brush my teeth again - but yeah I think it's probaly fine to eat after you oil pull.  [ send green star]
the order of things March 29, 2007 4:55 PM

according to the original article, you have to not have anything for about an hour (at least) before the oil pulling, but you can rinse, drink water, eat, brush teeth, whatever, immediately after.

Personally, I like brushing my teeth afterwards... leaves them squeeky clean!

Well I've jumped in the water and am swishing like mad. I started on 28/3/2007 with cold pressed sunflower oil and am swishing for 20 minutes.  I started to gag a bit and find that if I stop swishing til it settles down I can continue.

Thank you every one for all the information in all the threads. I get the daily digest so am trying to keep up. Sometimes I get an idea to post something and then find that someone else has beaten me to the post. Congratulations on an excellent group.  Smile!

another oil-pulling site March 30, 2007 1:55 AM It has some further info on how-to. This site says nothing to drink for one hour before, and not to pull less than four hours AFTER a meal. Also it says to drink 2-3 glasses of water after pulling & rinsing the mouth thoroughly. And it says not to stop pulling (like I did the first time I tried this) if you have aggravated symptoms or side effects, these indicate a healing response. They have a feedback section after the article with people telling about their oil-pulling experiences.  [ send green star]

Wow, I am so eager to try this...haven't had an opportunity to get the oil yet.  I am a little concerned about the possible cleansing effects, but I'm definitely gonna try this.  I was just reading at that site, and this intrigues me:

Interestingly, Ayurveda advises oil gargling "to purify the taste-buds and the entire system", as explained by Dr Deepak Chopra in Perfect Health. According to this life science, the tongue is mapped by organ-locations — that is, each section of the tongue is connected to the kidneys, lungs, spleen, liver, heart, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine.

In my lengthy healing journey, I've gone to a couple of iridologists (eyes) and a reflexologist (feet).  According to these practices, it's the same.  That is, different areas on the feet and eyes correspond to different parts of the body.  And now the tongue....  Hmmmm.  Why would these particular areas be singled out to represent the whole?  I don't think they are   It's just yet another indicator, that we are One Thing.  Everything, every tiny part of us represents the whole...  We are everything, and everything (and everyone) is Us

So the cure for all our ills?  Truly loving ourselves (accepting, respecting, not judging...ourselves) loving every inch of ourselves, inside and out   Simple, eh? lol   One indicator as to whether we're actually doing this loving and respecting of ourselves is our health, another is if those around us are treating us in this way.  If they aren't, we aren't.  They are a reflection of our own energy.  A little hint in an old book, "Do unto others..."   Disrespecting and hating others is like spittin' in the wind...  One part of the Body that's being harmed is harming All.

NOTE: These are instructions from India in which only 2 types of oil can be used. However, as you will read below in our Reader Feedback section, people are experimenting with different oils, adding anti-bacterial and anti-viral oil essences.  Soon we might have a purist vs. renegade oil pulling battle!

INSTRUCTIONS: First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it's still yellow, you haven't done it long enough.

You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Make sure you do it on an empty stomach, however. Spit it out in the toilet when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well.

Follow with 2 - 3 glasses of water.

It now contains parasites and bacteria!

The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed.

Note #1:
Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars.

Note #2:
Only sesame and sunflower oils produce favorable results.

Note #3:
If after meals, wait at least 4 hours before you Oil Pull. After drinking, wait 1 hour.

Note #4:
A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease/ailment is being cured.

Note #5:
Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects. Your body is healing.

Oil pulling March 30, 2007 9:25 AM

I haven't tried this yet either, haven't managed the time to run out and get the oil, but I'm really looking forward to giving it a go (although it really doesn't sound exactly fun). I'm more and more convinced it's 'a good thing'. If nothing else maybe it will take care of the tea stains on my teeth - what do you think Marie? Those of you who have been doing it for a while please send updates. Thanks  [ send green star]
 March 30, 2007 9:40 AM

Just done my first OP. Managed 10 mins with Sunflower oil, spat it out rinsed with water then did 10 more mins with coconut oil. I rinsed with water again and then cleaned my teeth with baking soda. I prefer the sunflower oil.
My mouth feels very clean, but I now have lots of cahtarr.
I'm going to stick with it and see what happens, thanks for starting this thread, great idea.

Oilpulling does whiten the teeth and remove stains. It seems though, for me anyway, that tea stains are harder to get off than coffee stains! The first time I tried OP I was still drinking coffee, so I didn't drink black tea at that time, only green & herbal which don't stain. The coffee stains came off much more easily than the tea, those stains are coming off more slowly (but surely).

The thing it is, oil-pulling whitens the entire surfaces of the teeth, so the un-stained parts get white really fast, which makes the stains seem more obvious at first oh well, baby steps.

Purple March 30, 2007 11:00 AM

Hey Purple, let us know how the coconut oil works for you. I have also heard some people are using virgin olive oil.

I think coconut might be a better alternate choice, theorizing that part of the 'action' is due to the oil being made from a nut. Of course I could be all wet on that, just a theory.

I've been doing this for about a week now and haven't really noticed anything different - my teeth do feel clean but that's about it for now. I will continue to do it and see if I notice anything else - but of course what's happening my not really be able to be noticed - like "BAM" but more subtle health differences. It's easy and inexpensive so I will definately continue to do this and beleive that it is removing toxins from my system.   [ send green star]
anonymous Hmmm March 31, 2007 8:09 AM

I've done this for about 4 days; some mornings I forget.

I do think my teeth are whiter.

But here is what I notice:

I have a lot of sludge suddenly on the back of my throat- it was never there before. My nose also gets stuffed or I can feel gunk moving around in my sinus cavity when I am swishing. (It must be oils affinity for the proteins and other junk in the snot that pulls it out)

I also have noticed one peculiar change, and I am not sure if it is due to the OP. I have to attribute it to the OP, though, because it is the only thing that I have done differently!  --I am suddenly able to kick my habit of eating sweets-- entirely! I have been fighitn unsuccessfully for probably a year now to stop being dependent on candy fixes thorughout the day. Many times I have thrown away candy in an attempt to force myself to quit, but my cravings or 'need' would be so bad I would go right back to the store and buy more.

Suddenly, I stopped eating candy and I feel fine. I threw it all away, and I have no desire to get it back.

I have also ditched my addiction to dried fruits. (another high sugar food) I havent craved it and I am able to keep myself away, and make myself eat other foods.   WOW!!!!

Another thing- I am suddenly craving VEGETABLES and FRUITS. I am known for always saying "I hate fruits and vegetables!" I never have an appetite for them because they were 'bulk' without much 'food' to me; I would stick with hummus, almond cheeses, eggs, rice cakes, protein shakes, and lots of dried fruits (not raw).

Now when I am hungry, I am asking myself "Where is the spinach? How about an apple instead? Mushrooms would go great with this. I should eat that kelp and seaweed I bought!"

This is odd! But pheonomenal!! I did NOT expect this result!!

But I am thrilled. For months I have nagged myself about my 'bad habits' and I knew they were not good for me, but I couldn't change them. I think th OP is behind my sudden resolve and easy change of my habits! WOO HOO!

Oh P.S.: I use unrefined, cold-pressed Sesame oil. It is delicious; it tastes like toasted sunflower seeds or sesame. I do it for at least 20 minutes, sometimes half an hour, with about 2 tablespoons. I am not too religious about it, because some morning or nights I am too hungry to wait. I also eat many small meals a day instead of large ones, so I dont really create that 4 hour window before a swish. But it seems to work anyway!

Now that is what I call a very encouraging report on Oil Pulling!

If Oil Pulling helped you stop your cravings for sweets (and that is an addiction like anything else) I am now wondering if this would help others who have cravings for drug & alcohol.

Any smokers here who want to try it to see if it takes cravings away for nicotine?

 [ send green star]
Pamela March 31, 2007 10:19 AM

that is truly amazing, that your craving for sweets went away that fast. Congratulations! Well, if its true that the oilpulling stimulates the meridans in the tongue which connect to major organs, maybe your pancreas was in need of a little massage Diabetes is one of the conditions oilpulling is said to help, guess it helps blood-sugar imbalances in general.  [ send green star]

Finding sesame or sunflower oil April 01, 2007 9:20 AM

Never thought I would have problems finding sesame or sunflower oil. The sesame oil I've found is "lightly toasted" and I have found no sunflower oil. Guess I need to go to the big health foods store.  [ send green star]
 April 01, 2007 10:18 AM

Hi folks, getting on well with the oil pulling.
I prefer the sesame seed and sunflower oils best. The coconut oil got very 'thin' very quickly and I kept wanting to swallow more with that one than the other two.

I have a question though,~ and if you are not too squimish read on~when I spit the oil out, it is thin and foamy and white but it still has looks faintly yellowish to me and is not pure white.
I thought it was because I wasn't doing it for long enough, so today I did two seperate lots, each for 30 mins with the same result.
What I'd be interested to know is what are other peoples exprience are and am I being too literal when the instructions say 'white'?

 [ send green star]
anonymous  April 01, 2007 10:21 AM

Mine is also yellowish white, with hardly any tiny bubbles. I make sure not to get it bubbly, though, by getting the air out and pulling the oil slowly.

Now I wonder- should it be bubbly??

more graphic description of pulled oil April 01, 2007 10:48 AM

Hmmm, mine is white or almost clear, I don't see any yellow tinge. I wouldn't say its foamy, although it is at a certain point while pulling, & there's some thicker patches.

Q: Are you chewing or chomping while pulling? Not the entire time, I mean , but alternating pulling and swishing with chewing?

I think working the jaws is important to get saliva flowing and combining with the oil, which is I believe what makes the oil change consistency.

 [ send green star]
Well I broke down and decided to try it April 01, 2007 11:00 AM

I got cold pressed (unheated) Sunflower Oil at the Health Store yesterday. The only time I can commit to it would be first thing in the morning before coffee and small breakfast.

So today was my first try. I'm planning on 15 minutes every morning. One tablespoon in, starting swishing, immediately a huge amount of saliva! Thought I wasn't going to be able to keep from swallowing it or leaking out the corners of my mouth. I'm looking at the clock thinking, no way I'll make it to 15 minutes.

So after about 4 minutes, my sinuses completely drained into my mouth. I'm thinking this mucous is probably not good to keep in my mouth so I spit it out, rinse with water then take another spoonful of oil in my mouth. This time I make it the full 15 minutes without anymore sinus drain.

The oil came out white and full of bubbles. I brushed my teeth and tongue. It's the first day so I'm not expecting a huge result. My sinuses are clear, that's all I'm noticing so far. I'll see if anything new evolves and let you know.

Thanks Pamala and Marie, I chomp and swish alternatively and there is lots of salvia bulid up while pulling. I wonder if it has anything to do with having Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and that I have an allergy to the toxins produced by the Candida. Maybe there are just lots of toxins in my body and they are starting to shift. Atleast I hope so.

OIL PULLING WEEK #3 April 02, 2007 5:46 AM

Hello Again to all:

Well this week I noticed that my teeth are indeed getting very white.
Also I have been getting an upset stomach periodically and for the past week my stomach has been bloated.
I suppose this is part of the de toxing . I was really not sure about all of these claims. But the proof is in the pudding as they say. As a person who travels around the world looking at natural cures/treatments I am impressed. I wonder what else I will find when I travel to India.
As for my knees? Well they are lighter all right.!! no more dark grey looking knees!!! There is a small area that is still dark but I can tell this is an impressive treatment !! According to the chinese herbalists and the accupuncturists this means the liver/kidney is being cleansed.
I will tell you again that the sesame oil was not so impressive to me(maybe I got the wrong kind). But the sunflower oil does bring out the white foamy fluid when I finish pulling.
Lets see what happens next week.

Update April 02, 2007 6:18 AM

I managed to do 2 rounds of 5 minutes this morning. I'm noticing a diference in both my sinus activity as well as cravings. Pamela, I too have started craving more fruits. I hadn’t associated that with oil pulling, though. Now you make me wonder.

I didn't do it over the weekend - just too hungry in the mornings to wait.

So far so good.

anonymous  April 02, 2007 6:27 AM

Wow! Isn't that wierd? ...Now I know I'm not crazy after all

And to answer the question, no I didn't "chomp" or "chew" at all, actually. My mistake! I just 'pulled' it. So from here on out I'll be chewing on it, too.

Thanks for pointing that out to me!

finally tried it April 02, 2007 7:35 AM

Getting the oil was difficult in my little town. I finally managed to come across some sunflower oil, alas not cold pressed. Tried it for the first time this morning. Got less than a minute on the first spoonful and gagged so bad had to spit it out. But with determination tried it again and made it through 5 minutes. It was so thick and white I decided I must be so full of toxins it's going to take a while to build up to a full routine. I've had a minor sinus headache for days, but after the oil pulling I realized it wasn't bothering me. I think this is going to be a very good thing!  [ send green star]
Progress April 02, 2007 8:29 AM

I do the oil pulling at night, before bed (mornings are devoted to exercise, no time for 15 minutes of this, too)...

Last night, I think I hit a turning point, or something. After the initial 15 minutes (which, actually, is closer to 18, according to my Dear Hubby, as I put the oil in, wander out to the kitchen, set the timer, wander out and do email... when the timer beeps, I wander back to the bathroom...), I spat it out, rinsed, brushed my teeth, and then noticed that my tongue was DISGUSTINGLY coated with icky... so I grab a spoon and did some serious scraping... ewwwww. Then, I followed that with a second bout of oil pulling!

Oh, and my Dear Hubby has noticed that my teeth are MUCH whiter... I'm seeing close to the same effect as when I did the home teeth whitening thing a couple of years ago, already.

 [ send green star]
I'll take the challenge! April 02, 2007 8:53 AM

This sounds really interesting. I am a smoker and would love to see if this helps with the cravings, not to mention the acne and eczema/psoriasis too. I have to admit while I started reading this thread, I had not eaten yet, jumped up and grabbed my coconut oil and swished for 15 minutes. I'm off to get the sunflower or sesame oil today!

I will definitely keep my findings posted

 April 02, 2007 9:09 AM

Great to see so many people joining the "oil pullers". I thought I'd do it every two days or so after the initial few whole weeks ... but ... maybe I'll go back to daily for now.  I have a feeling more toxins need to be eliminated from my body. And ... my teeth are whiter, my sinuses are clearer and I still get the occasional pimple - some in weird places . I'm still using the sunflower oil - which I found to be the best for me, and the easiest to do it with.

Yes there's quite a few of us now! I've been having sinus drainage also, today I had to spit out and reload with oil. Also still a stray zit or two, but not like when I first started. I notice that bad air quality doesn't affect me like it used to, nor like it affects other people around me.  [ send green star]

I forgot to mention that my skin is another thing that is changing. I'm 38 but I was breaking out on my chin like a pre-pubescent teen, but within days of the first attempt it started to clear up. It's still clear.

I have been oil pulling for 4 days now, I'm excited to get to a month and see what really happens. My teeth do seem a bit whiter. My husband askedoanow too but not as diligent. Now if I can just get my 4 yr old to do it!

The 4th day I did notice a bit of nasal congestion, very slightly. Lets hope it can "cure" me of this smoking thing!!LOL!!

acne April 06, 2007 11:47 PM

Donna, I read your post after I posted. I have suffered from moderate acne for a long time and it has only gotten worse with age. So far I have drastically changed my diet, no gluten, sugar, or dairy and it is looking better. I have started the oil pulling and have noticed a zit here and there but no major break outs. I do suspect that it would bring out what is left under the surface and then I will be free and clear. I am loking for help with acne, smoking, and eczema/psoriasis(the rash could be from mold in our room which I intended to kill). As healthy as I am I still sound like I have all kinds of problems. Honestly I think I am sensitive to many things includidng foods and enviroment making it hard for me to pin point it.  [ send green star]
anonymous Wow April 07, 2007 4:59 AM

I guess I should have checked back more often. Lots of great stuff!!ThankYou everyone for your info

Update on Chris. He is doing great. The enlarged lymp node is consistantly normal. Unless he has something at a friends house like a glass of milk, or a large amount of candy, it does not enlagre again. He basically has no chemicals in his diet. hard but necessary.  He dosent mind the new diet at all. Of course I probably over compensate with baking him a lot of natural treats, and he loves the smoothies! He has only been able to do about 4-5 min on the oil pulling almost daily.

I thought I would add this little bit of personal experience too. I read earlier about not wanting sweets and a reply of curiosity on other addictions. I never put 2 and 2 together but since I started oil pulling I cannot smoke in the morning.  Eventually I want one and if it is still to early, it is still awful and I have to put it out.I should put this stuff in a travel size bottle and carry it in my purse!

 [report anonymous abuse]
 April 09, 2007 11:26 AM

I started a new protocol, doing two or three consecutive pulls. I find it now takes less than the 15 to 20 minutes of swishing to get the oil to the right consistency for doneness.

Yahoo has an oilpulling group which unfortunately doesn't seem to be very active.  But I read about this idea of consecutive pulling there. One guy says he does it 7 times in a row! Whoa.

Apparently a lot of people find that after doing pulling for awhile, the time needed shortens. Perhaps the body gets trained to 'now its time to release the toxins.'

I actually have many kinds of oils from previous health shopping sprees (LOL) -- Flax, almond, peanut, walnut, grape seed, avocado, and olive...

So I decided to try (arbitrarily) avocado. Bingo!!

I immediately salivate like niagra falls when that is in my mouth... and even after I spit it out, I continue to salivate or almost 20 minutes.

It works much better for me than the sesame; the avocado oil starts off as a light green color (surprise) but when I spit it out it is completely opaque white. So this, for me, is a better oil.

Sadly, I only had ~1 tbsp left of that oil... so I have to wait to get more. But I'd suggest experimenting with different oils to find the one that works right for you.

The brand of my avocado oil is called "Tree of Life" and I got it at whole foods a while back. (the bottle was dusty)

Next time I shop, I'll get some more.

Yes, I've wondered why sunflower or sesame are the ones specified. Perhaps that was what was the best available locally to the originators of this practice, which comes from the ayurvedic tradition. I heard of people trying olive or coconut oil, I might have mentioned that before. The only thing I can think of, is there might be some important difference in oils made from seeds (and perhaps nuts?) and those pressed from fruit or vegetables. I doubt there's any harm in experimenting, as long as you're using an edible oil anyway. I've wondered about using flax seed oil, it seems like it might be a good one.  [ send green star]
Pamela April 09, 2007 3:41 PM

What about the taste? Sunflower oil is pretty light so it doesn't make one gag. How about the avocado?  [ send green star]
anonymous  April 10, 2007 8:52 AM

Well me personally, I am a goat when it comes to food- I can eat a boot if there's salt on it. So gagging form oil is not an issue for me.

I did notice that the avocado oil caused a slight sting in the back of the mouth- on the soft tissue; almost an indigestion feel like other users have noted with other oils too.

As for the taste of it, well, its like an actual oil taste- musty, and stale. It had no real flavor, but just that 'aura' of an unrefined oil...the smell of vegetable oil... I guess like old vegetable oil in the kitchen. its hard to describe really.  The sesame was definitely more tasty and pleasant but I really dont care about that- Im the type that prefers results over comfort.

I suppose try a sip and if you cant bear it, use the oil for skin care or hair care instead

It's now week 2 day 4.
I've been OP twice a day varying between sesame seed oil and sunflower oil.
Stil getting loads of sinus drainage, before during and especialy after doing an OP. I've always been prone but it's never been this consistant before. I'm taking it as a good sign of toxins on the move.
The stains on my teeth are just starting to fade abit,
and there have been some bizzare changes that may or may not relate to OP.
I now chew my food much better and much more thoroughly and crave salad stuff. I don't like salad stuff, so this comes as a bit of a surprize!
I feel abit more alert within myself  My hubby reckons my eyes are much brighter, and I feel abit more alert within myself. (I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, so that's no mean achievement ).
I also don't crave comfort food so much and I am not so hungry between meals and suspect I've lost a bit of weight.
It might have something to do with OP or not, but I'm certainly going to keep going with it!

I want to say that my teeth are now very white!! Only problem that I can tell you about is my stomach. It is very upset!! It is better now so maybe this was pulling something out of my system. I also am taking the ACV( Apple Cider Vinegar)at night to help with the stomach pains. I'm telling you that this was some really bad indigestion/pain!! But it seems to be passing ... As for my knees? they are lighter and not as dark.  Also  I am loosing weight and feeling more energy I will keep you posted.

Not bad!  I only doing once a day in the morning, using sunflower oil - some days I change oil half-way through, some others I don't (depending on time) and  - my teeth are whiter, I do have more energy, clear sinuses. But I'm also hungrier - not adding any weight really, but not loosing any either. The only other thing that I've noticed: the little skin tag that I had just under my eye (barely noticeable to begin with) dissapeared. Whether that was from the OL or not ... I don't know, but I'm glad it's gone ... I have another one on my body that I'll be watching from now on!

waht's up... April 12, 2007 8:29 AM

I have been pulling a little oever a week now. Most of the time I will do it twice a day. My teeth are much whiter, I have noticed my sinuses are getting a bit stopped up but it's not a cold. So I guess it's getting all the gunk out. A few small pimples have popped up but they go away quickly. I am still waiting for it to stop the cravings for cigaretts. I think I will go buy some "stop smoking" tea today and drink it all!!

Robert, another thing you could take for your stomach is Ginger Syrup. I can't remember the exact name of it right now but I will come back with the name later. I'm going to go buy some today. As for myself I always had chronic stomach problems and after I drastically changed my diet it is MUCH better- no gluten of any kind- no dairy- no sugar. It really did the trick and I no longer have cystic acne!!!

Hi every one, I have stopped the reflexive  gagging by adding one drop of peppermint essence [pure essential oil] to the spoon of sunflower oil.

I find that the oil swishing does start the sinuses draining however it sits in the back of the throat and doesn't dislodge. Are there any answers to this small challenge?

This is a wonderful group with a lot of information. Thank you to All. Smile!

Can Oil Amount Be Reduced? April 13, 2007 9:47 PM

I was wondering if the amount of oil could be lessened for people who are having difficulty?   I'm sure there's a variation in mouth sizes.   There are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon.   Two teaspoons of oil would be one third less.  I was wondering if using a little less oil might be helpful for some people?   I've been able to do this with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, but I think I would be more comfortable with only a couple of teaspoons.

Clearly Marie has started the thread that refuses to die........ April 14, 2007 8:37 AM

which means that it is an incredibly important thread. Who knew? I know I didn't. It sounded illogical at best and bizarre at worst. I had never heard of Oil Pulling and looked on in amazement as the thread grew and grew and grew with account after account of personal testimonies. So even I broke down and got into the whole Oil Pulling thing.

Robert is so right about how we will be surprised at what needs detoxification in our bodies. Areas of our bodies we had no idea were compromised or we just coped with, got used to or ignored.

A good case in point is the sinus draining. Many of us experience that with the oil pulling so that we have to spit out the first dose of oil to get rid of the initial mucous draining back into the mouth and then redose with fresh oil.

We may have been breathing shallow with full sinuses forever and just thinking that is "normal". So this is quite an eye opener.

As to different sizes of ones mouth and some not being able to hold a full tablespoon, I see no reason why the dose couldn't be cut in half. Better half than nothing.

There was another question about Oil Pulling where the mucous drained from the sinuses but caught in the back of the throat without draining into the mouth. As in the case of those who have severe heart problems, mucous builds in their lungs and if the person doesn't take enough water in, it gets even worse because it won't cough up easily because the mucous is too thick. So just from a common sense approach I would opin that the sinuses are affected the same way. Try drinking more liquids and as an interesting side note, hot sauce will start both the lungs to expectorate and the sinuses to drain. It keeps them flowing so to speak. So a tablespoon of hot sauce a half hour before the Oil Pulling should start the sinuses draining in preparation for the Oil Pull. Try that and see what that does for you.

amount of oil April 14, 2007 11:12 PM

I doubt I'm using a full tablespoon, more like 2/3. I use the bottle cap measure the dose, about 1 & 1/2 capfuls. It seems like I need less now than when I first started, and I don't have to swish as long before the saliva really starts flowing. The saliva is what contains all the toxins so thats what the pulling is all about. I also have to clear and reload because of sinus drainage, not always, but about half the time I'd say. I think it was at earthclinic I read that people are experimenting with adding a drop or two of essential oils. Peppermint was mentioned, as I think someone also mentioned on this thread. I was just wondering what to do tomorrow for a mouthwash for after, because I just ran out of the food grade hydrogen peroxide, which I had been using to rinse. But I think tomorrow I will try a few drops of clove oil in water to cleanse my mouth after pulling.  [ send green star]
WEEK#5 April 18, 2007 9:03 AM

Good Morning to all:

I wrote this message and it dissapeared. So I will try again. I have noticed whiter teeth, and the darkness disappearing from my knees. (only small part under knee cap is dark now but even that is lighter)the teeth next to the missing tooth(waiting for the implant)  were a dark ugly color, the dentist told me it was infected and the other tooth would have to go as well. After doing the pulling this dark area has lightened considerably. The yellow band on the bottom of my lower teeth has lightened up alot; the teeth are almost white in this area. nothing has helped except the oil pulling.

I am grateful to all for your writing on this subject. I can hardly wait until I go to India late this year or ealy next year. I want to investigate more of this ayuervedic technique.

Cheers and blessings to all

double pull protocol April 20, 2007 12:18 PM

Doing two consecutive pulls seems to be working out, it only takes me ten minutes--sometimes less--to get to the 'used oil' stage. And if your sinuses drain right away, as a few have noted, it seems best to get that out of your mouth and reload.

I've been using a rinse of a few drops of clove oil in water & it seems to work well.

WEEK#6 April 23, 2007 6:16 PM

Hello Again:
Well let's see anything different this week?
Not really. The knees are much clearer. The teeth are getting whiter each time. I do notice that the yellow is fainter on the bottom  teeth. The stained gap in between the back molars seems to be clearing up also. I am hoping it will clear up toatally. I go back to the dentist in 3 weeks. Not too much stomach pain. Once in a while I feel it but nothing like after the first 10 days. I wonder what was in my stomach??? I am a vegan and thought that I was pretty much cleaned out but no!!!
Ok that's it. I will let you know if anything changes.
Cheers and blessings

Update on tea stains & immune function May 02, 2007 8:56 AM

Well the tea stains are finally starting to fade, I attribute it to the double (sometimes triple)pulls I have been doing, not necessarily every day, but 3 or 4 times per week. This past week or so I have been double-pulling everyday as I have been fighting what I first thought was a sinus infection or allergy but turned out to be a flu. Everyone around here has it. I seem to have gotten off lightly, my symptoms are very very mild compared to others. I attribute this in large part to my oilpulling practice of the past few months. [Although I did a few other things for myself, like salt baths, scrubs & gargles, and even the infamous garlic snort]

Anybody still pulling? May 13, 2007 9:28 PM

I skipped two mornings this week--woke up thirtsy & drank water before I realized it was time to get up--and didn't feel like waiting another hour to pull, then 15 minutes of pulling, and only then have my tea. No way. But I feel sorta guilty when I skip it

Hello everybody,

I have a question please, does this oil-pulling have to be done before washing teeth in the morning

Thanks, Blanca

Still pulling ... somedays I almost skip it, but then ... like Marie said ... I feel guilty and do it. The only thing lately - for the last two days or so - I have a bit of a nose bleed after pulling - not much, just a few drops. Don't know what to make of that!

Blanca: As far as I understood, yes ... you do it before brushing your teeth.

Are you using Echinacea for the virus?

 [ send green star]
 May 14, 2007 6:57 AM

Its out of my system now, for about week-10 days. I had it for a little over a week, which is half the time other people seem to have it. I didn't use echinacea, I was told a long time ago I'm one of those who shouldn't take it, I used to have a lot of allergies, and a family history of diabetes. I'm glad you mentioned it though, because I don't have the allergies to pollens anymore, and my blood sugar, weight & eating habits are fine. So probably its okay now for me to take it.  [ send green star]
anonymous  May 14, 2007 8:05 AM

I started pulling about a week ago (I use sunflower oil ... tried sesame but couldn't deal with the strong flavor). I've definitely noticed that my teeth are getting whiter each day, and my gums, which I've always had a slight swelling problem with, are getting tighter and flatter. I've also recently cut soda from my diet, so that may be helping too. Quick question for the pulling veterans ... I've been seeing my doctor for the past few months about swollen glands that won't go down. I'm seeing a specialist next week for a more in-depth examination, but I'm hoping that the pulling will help in the meantime. Has anyone had any lymph node swelling that oil pulling has helped with?  [report anonymous abuse]
Laura May 14, 2007 8:15 AM

Is Michelle T. in the house? Her son had a swollen/infected lymph gland, that antibiotics weren't helping. Oil-pulling was one of the things she was going to get him to try, she also used an oil compress of some sort. She posted some about this way back in this thread.

I have had chronic problems with the lymph nodes under my throat swelling for years. What is happening now is that when I pull they swell up immediately & I have cough & sputter a lot then they get smaller again. I see this as evedence of pulling out toxins. Is this happening to anyone else? on days when they swell a lot I try to pull twice. A couple of days ago I spit out a small bloody mass of what lookes like tissue (sorry , don't know how to say it any other way).

Meanwhile my skin continues to improve, my gums & teeth are healthier & whiter & I seem to be losing the puffininess in my muscles..I have stretches are also getting easier!

Sesame Oil - a little addition - hopefully ;-) May 14, 2007 8:33 AM

I am not sure whether this is new or already adressed somewhere in this thread and i simply didn't see it:

---first : Sesame Oil is strongly recommended especially for menopause womyn as it carries sosome Vitamin (my memory says p or F ) that lacks during Menopause, so using Sesame Oil as much as you can (in salad , in bathing , in massage will make you feel like falling into a "young pool")

--- second : what i have learned is that it is more useful when you heat it before using externally  as the surface will "stretch" and its capacity becomes vaster (this is from my ayurvedic learning) how to heat , well ; that is an easy procedure ! you put in in a pot and heat it . from time to time throw a drop of water into ...if it plops it's ready - that's all . this will also make it easier to use in Oil Pulling , as the feeling of it is easier to bear in the mouth now ...---i know a lot of people have a huge aversion against the "thick oil feeling"

--- use it before showers ! you will feel like a new born baby - as this definetly reduces the unwanted side eff ects of dehydration and dry skin

STILL PULLING May 14, 2007 10:30 AM

Yup. still pulling.

White teeth. My mother asked me yesterday what I was doing to make my teeth so white. She thought I had bleached them.

My knees are very clear now. No upset stomach or any of the nonesense that I had when I first pulled. So I still do this every day. it is now week#7.

Maybe I will taper off later. But I still do it every day.

Off and On May 14, 2007 11:36 AM

I try to remember to do the oil-pulling in the evenings, before bed.

I've switched to doing hydrogen peroxide swishing in the mornings, as I am able to do that in the shower... which means if I suddenly need to get rid of it, I can... no way can I do that with the oil! I'd be spending some serious time getting the slick out of the shower.

The HP pull also triggers drainage, so I think I'm getting some benefits. I need to be more faithful with the oil, however...

Sorry about large font, I have eye problems.

I've been OP twice a day for over a month and a half. My teeth are a bit whiter, and I have more energy.
(I have CFS, so this is very good news).
My cravings are substainaly less and my concentration is better.
I get to the 'used oil stage' much more quickly and even the Sesame seed oil turns white.
I'm going to continue with it and see where it goes.
This may sound very odd, but I quite enjoy oil pulling!~How weird is that?!

Blanca May 20, 2007 6:54 AM

Sorry to overlook your question. Swishing means you move the oil around in your mouth, pulling it through the teeth {the spaces between}, around the tongue & between side of mouth and gums. Like if you were swishing mouthwash through your mouth. Don't gargle with the oil, though, or swallow it [although it says on the oilpulling site not to panic if you sallow a little, it will pas through your system.]  [ send green star]

STILL PULLING June 09, 2007 8:53 AM

Hello again:
Thanks Donna, yes I am still pulling. I want to thank you and everyone here for putting this thread on the group site.
My teeth are the whitest ever! No yellow anywhere. I could not get this yellow out for years!! I was a smoker from 1976-87. And believe me it was difficult to get out. But now it is successful. ( i tried bleaching before with good resutls but always a little yellow remained)
I still pull 5 days weekly for about 15 min. each morning . I would have to say that since I started it took about 6 weeks before the white teeth came about.
So I look forward to going to India late this year or early next Jan/Feb.

OK, y'all.  I have just sat here and read this ENTIRE thread!  Fascinating results you've all had.

I see someone took up the challenge as far as quitting smoking, but don't recall any follow-up on that.  How's that working out?  I ask because I've been wanting to quit for a while now and am still fighting the "I need my Nicorette (during the day in the office!)" since I finally managed to NOT buy any more a couple of weeks ago.  I'm taking this a stage at a time, and am hoping to give up the cigarettes themselves soon.

Since I was so intrigued with this OP thing, I took a mini-break and used some EVOO.  Nothing really drastic until right at the 5-6 minute mark - then the gag reflex hit with a vengeance!  Wow.  I'll be getting sunflower oil tomorrow when I do my round of the stores and will keep you posted in the nicotine cravings!

I loved the 'teaholic' comment!  I'm one, too!!

Thanks so much, Donna, for starting this thread, and thanks to everyone who posted!

Oops.  My apologies to you both.   Guess I was a little overloaded from my complete read-through.  Bad me.

WildOne!   Too funny!

I do remember seeing that people have used spearmint essential oil with the sunflower to make it more palatable.  While I do love mint, my gall-bladder does NOT and lets me know anytime I ingest too much.  I'm wondering whether lemon essential oil would work...  any thoughts regarding negative effects?  I have a glitchy thyroid (1/4 left and still doing its job!), so I try to be careful with what in take in and/or expose myself to.  Any and all thoughts will be extremely welcome.

Do I correctly recall sunflower oil being spoken of as hard to locate?  I found it at one of the major grocery stores here, as well as Wild Oats.

Going to try it out June 16, 2007 8:45 AM

I managed 8 mins, and did ok until I spit it out, then I nearly gagged, hoping I will get used to the taste. I am hoping for improvement in a sight but widespread exema type skin issue, small cavities, nasal issues, and swollen neck glands. We will see how it goes. Desperate July 05, 2007 10:40 AM

Hi everyone I just read all of this thread this afternoon after googling "brain fog". The term "Oil pulling" came up and I researched it thoroughly. Here is my story; please forgive me if it is a long; I am desperate for answers.

Last July I went to Wasage Beach and swam in the water for hours on time even though I had a small cold. The next week my cold turned into a few months sinus infection including stuffed-feeling ears and sometimes sore ears and when my family doctor prescribed sinus medication I realized nothing was helping at all so I decided that maybe it was more than a sinus infection. Soon after this on November I got happily engaged to my boyfriend of 3 years and that day before he proposed I noticed I was feeling very very tired and irritated. The next day I was an emotional wreck because I was so sad that the engagement passed me so fast. Well on December things went terrible from there; I grew more and more tired and that was eventually accompanied with depression and anxiety attacks and I used to be soooo happy. The next thing that happened is the one thing that made me soo desperate to try anything to see what is going on; seeing how all the tests I had at hospitals came in clear and seeing how my doctor is to the point where he will give up on me. Come the day before Christmas day and the day of Christmas day I experienced the wierdest feeling: it felt like someone drugged me and stuffed me in a giant bubble. I am assuming this is described as "Brain Fog" or "Spaced-out". I HATE this feeling sooo much and it is ruining my life! I am seriously wondering if I have Candida, Fibro (don't know the exact word) or even something wrong with my ears. My vision is worse too even though my eye doctor said I was fine. I just did oil pulling this morning for 25 minutes with olive oil and I don't know why or if this is a good thing but the sooner I came to my time to spit the substance out it kept splurting out of my mouth as if my mouth was fuller than when it started; could it be my own excess saliva? I spit it out when the time was up and the oil was white and slightly foamy. I was disappointed when afterwards I had no mucus or any sign that it was working. Does this mean anything or does it sometimes take longer for a problem that has been with me for almost a year? All I really want is to have this procedure cure or ail my Brain Fog. Has anyone else suffered Brain Fog? Has anyone else OP and had really great results with decreased brain fog or no more brain fog? How will I know if I had some toxins in me...what healing or herx signs will show up? I don't care (right now anyways) about getting my teeth white or anything else except to get healthy again and my brain fog gone. please, can anyone help me with providing some more information? Thanks so much

Heather - with all those symptoms, have you seen a neurologist?  Fibromyalgia can be a symptom of thyroid, but the other issues don't fit.  An inner ear problem can cause all sorts of issues, including vision problems (my aunt suffers from that).  I don't think inner ear problems cause fibromyalgia, though.  Hopefully others with more knowledge will have some more directed answers for you.  [report anonymous abuse]
Will try this tonight July 06, 2007 6:43 AM

I just read this post and it sounds great. I have a tendancy to get ill (about every other month or so) and I just have to wait it out because nothing ever helps. I tried losing weight (reducing my calorie intake and exercising 4 times a week) and I can't even do that. I've been exercising 4 time a week for nearly two months and I've seen no change. I wonder if this will help?  [ send green star]

Sadly no I am not able to go to see a neurolgist. I don't have enough money for one. I also read other symptoms of fibro... like joint pain and stuff that i don't have. Do you think Oil Pulling would help me somewhat? Thanks for your answers and your help

Since Oil Pulling is harmless with no side effects, one has to wonder why you don't just try it (with sunflower oil) rather than ask our permission to try it.  [ send green star]
Another new reader... July 06, 2007 5:27 PM

I got linked to this thread by a very close friend of mine (Thanks, Dorothy!) and have read through the whole thread. I'm intrigued, and will definitely try this out, though the timing of that trial may have to be a bit more distant in my case, depending on what my mid-wife says (she's progressive enough to admit the positive effects of alternative medicine treatments as well as "traditional" medicine) concerning the possible effects of the specific oils during pregnancy. If she has concerns that it might not be good for the baby, then I'll wait until after the birth (I'm due December 3rd) to start OP.

But honestly, I don't see where she'd have anything against it. I'd love to see more about the effort/effect for those of you trying to quit smoking with the help of OP, since that sort of benefit would be immensely appreciated for my soul-mate, who's had trouble with being able to quit!

Keeping a close (hopeful!) eye on this...

I could Feel the Draw on my Glands and Sinuses and I just got over some tooth pain after Eating ice Cream and it Feels much better I have had an ongoing problem with Eye pain and Light sensitivity and it Seems to have gotten Better already.

I think I may switch to Sunflower; I Love Olive Oil and I don't want to Burn out on it; Besides Sunflower is cheaper and if I'm going to Spit it out I would rather Be Cheap and Save my olive oil for salads and other Goodies!..!

Hello everyone again Well I started Oil Pulling 2 weeks ago for 2 days with Virgin Oil and I noticed no results. I then switched to Sesame Oil and have done it this first week and yesterday, being my fourth day, I have noticed mucous coming up my mouth when I was swishing and then I was sneezing a lot all day and slightly coughing and had a runny nose. Heather: according to this website:

Note #4:
A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease/ailment is being cured.

Note #5:
Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects after a day or two. Your body is healing.

Alice: no, I personally never chocked on it. Are you doing anything else to relieve your heavy congestion, though? Take a look in this group (check the archives too) and see if you find anything else that may be of help. If not, we'll start a new thread!

Oil Pulling Day 1
I read through this entire thread yesterday evening and checked out some of the links given. I found it very interesting especially when it makes no logical sense why it would work. The morning ritual is what I connect with the sinus drainings. The pressure in your sinuses changes when you are laying flat to when you sit up, as in first thing in the morning. You can feel that any time you have a bad head cold. Salivating is a natural response to having anything in your mouth so it only makes sense it would build up when you don't swallow. If it were one type of oil I might think it had some properties to it that were possibly responsible for the drawing out of toxins. Just being oil itself wouldn't seem to be enough, though sunflower and sesame are both seed oils most likely they would not contain the same amounts of different substances though I'm not a chemist. Olive oil on the other hand is made from the olive fruit, not the seeds so it would seem to be totally unrelated. Anyone out there have any theories on why/how this might work?

Intrigued as I was and with the health problems I have I decided on a leap of faith and so this morning embarked on my first oil pulling adventure. Given the sinus issue and being loath to carry that in my mouth for 15 minutes I decided a little different course. I went about my morning for a few minutes giving the pressure change from laying to upright time to take full effect and then blowing my nose as full as possible to remove any possible drainage before beginning. I didn't have any sunflower or sesame oils so I went with apricot kernel oil since it is very light and having a sensitive gag reflex it seemed a decent one to try with just to see if I could get through the process. My first tablespoon went all right. It was very light as I mentioned and the taste was not unpleasant. I was able to go the full 15 minutes by distraction of doing other things while chomping, chewing and swishing. There was no draining at all which I was more than happy about. Upon removal the previously almost clear oil was now milky white and not at all foamy so I don't think it's air bubbles. That sticky stuff that seems to coat your teeth and tongue in the night even after good brushing? I don't know. In any case with it not being an unpleasant experience I decided to go for round 2 then and there to see if I could handle a thicker oil. Oil 2 was walnut oil. Thicker and more traditionally golden colored it still didn't make me gag and tasted obviously like walnuts. Again no drainage of sinuses but on removal was the same milky white as the other much lighter oil with no golden color remaining. I rinsed my mouth several times after with warm water and went on to brush my teeth since if it did remove any toxins I thought it was best to remove any residue of that so it wouldn't be reabsorbed in any way. I felt fine after each session and noticed no change in tooth color. I am also a big tea drinker. I put this down to being the first time and nothing happens over night as they say. In any case I can't see any harm in it since these are all oils we cook with and eat with all the time so I intend to give it a good solid try and see if I notice any changes over the time. I'll use what I have for now and look to get some sunflower oil the next time I'm out at the store. I will keep you all posted.

new regimen September 12, 2007 8:14 AM

I stopped the pulling for some reason, I don't know why, but I am back at it with a new regiman.

Oil pulling in the morning with sesame oil, it's really not that bad, I can tolerate it and have gotten used to it. Then a nice glass of apple cider vinegar(mixed with water of course!), then on to my morning tea of raspberry leaves.

Let's see how this wroks Day one is uneventful so far, but I will be back to give results on a weekly basis

re:difficult stains on teeth September 18, 2007 2:01 PM

I stumbled onto something really cool, one day I decided to brush with the oil as well as pulling. The effect on stains is incredible, in less than two weeks the stains were gone & my teeth are whiter all the time. I don't let the oil get to the foamy stage though. I found a bottle of peppermint oil in a base of sunflower oil that works great but is pricey, $3 or $4 for a few ounces.  [ send green star]
3 weeks and counting September 19, 2007 6:35 AM

I finally found some expeller pressed sunflower oil to use, really light and even pleasant tasting. I have been pulling everyday, about 15 to 20 minutes per day. My teeth are whiter, though I will try brushing with it to get the really stubborn stains (great idea). I seem to have more energy, almost as though I had been drinking Noni, which I love, but the real stuff is hard to get. My skin condition (something like a rash, but looking more like a fungal thing, or indicative of liver issues) has lightened and stop spreading. I took one day off and regretted it, stomach pains (why?), a general feeling of being 'off', kind of foggy, and decreased energy that day.

Regarding how it works, Rabbit, I am not sure. But my research into salivary glands led me to the fact that our saliva is 'balanced' in the glands, thus intense salivation would give less time for the glands to pull stuff back out to recirculate. This could include toxins. It definately includes potassium, so if you are doing this more than once a day, make sure you eat a bannana or get your pottasium in some other way.

Thanks Laura, that makes some sense. Maybe I should try doing it more than once a day as I'm not seeing much result so far.  [ send green star]
 September 22, 2007 9:58 PM

I have read all this thread and I am fascinated. I want to start oil pulling but I am afraid to do so due to my stomach... I have a very weak stomach, always had problems with gastritis, colon, and just a generally weak stomach.  To the point where I need to be careful what I eat or I'll end up with cramps.

It seems this could trigger some stomach pains?

I will talk to a doctor about it before I start...and will post here.

Thanks for a wonderful thread!

Haven't done it for a while. I will start again! The article below reminded me of this thread:

The Benefits of Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is said to be a powerful means of maintaining good health as well as an effective cure for a variety of ills. This is an ancient technique, first described in 5,000-year-old Ayurvedic texts. The practice is simple. Soon after...

 February 27, 2009 10:55 PM

I guess I should've looked here first but you can read my experience and my first day results here:

I'm a smoker too, so we'll see.

I do know that you can use less than a tablespoon, especially if you have a sensitive gag reflex.

 [ send green star]
 February 27, 2009 11:03 PM

Oh, what I didn't state on the other thread is that I did it for 40 minutes and it wasn't white when I spit it out... that's suppose to be the important thing...

from the original site:
"If the oil is still yellow, it has not been pulled long enough"

and in FAQ:
"When we do OP the entire oil should become thin, like water and no oily feeling should be left. When that happens we would have utilized the entire oil for the purpose of OP. This happens within 15 to 20 minutes for most of the people. If the quantity is increased it takes more time to become watery and white and many would not like to spend more time on pulling. Spitting when it is still oily is waste of oil and a feeling of freshness does not come which is not desirable."

Resurrecting a dead topic for a good cause November 08, 2010 4:47 PM

I just heard about "oil pulling" last night while looking around the Internet.  WOW, what a weird concept.

This morning I tried it.  I used about a tablespoon of coconut oil (it was cold and melted in my mouth), a little less than a tablespoon because my mouth was so full.  I swished and kept it in my mouth for five minutes.  My mouth became full of foam and saliva.

Later in the morning I noticed my sinuses were wanting to drain more, and that my tongue felt somehow cleaner.  I could taste food better than I had in quite some time.

I'm going to try it for a few weeks and hope my sinuses drain, and who knows what other great health benefits I might gain?  It doesn't take long, it's not expensive, it's not difficult, and it just may make a great difference in my life.

... but someone really needs to change the name!

just did 15 minutes of pulling. only had olive oil available.

will buy sunflower from sunflower market. I hope this does

I have done it with sesame oil, and it does seem to help with sinus issues, if I feel like gagging, and that has happened, I just spit it out and start over, there are days when I've had to reload many times, and others when I could go for twenty minutes.

I've been reading the whole site since 2007,seems you should

build to 15 minutes. i do yoga,so i just did poses while shwishing.tastes in my mouth still.  olive oil came out a little

yellow upon spitting out. don't know if it's the length of time, the  oil, or alot of toxins.

I tried Oil Pulling a few years ago with great results. I have no idea why I stopped but I restarted yesterday morning and my teeth felt really clean and looked brighter. I started using Grapeseed Oil, but in the past I have had great results with EVOO and Sunflower Oil when the EVOO tan out. I didn't notice the energy burst at the time but in hindsight I was always very busy at around that time. I will be doing it in the am and pm. The benefits sound great, I was hoping for whiter healthier teeth! Great thread.

FREAKING OUT TONIGHT, HAVE TO GET A CT SCAN OF MY JAW TOMMORROW. any words of empathy are welcome. i'm a wreck. didn't expect this. oil pulling as i write. can't grow new bone, though. it;s like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic.

Hi Siouxz,

I'm really sorry to hear what is happening.  It sounds like a lot to go through.

How is your over-all bone density?  Have you had it checked?

 [ send green star]
thanks March 22, 2011 8:03 AM

no,and now i'm too scared to. i did have back surgery last year, and nothing was said by the orthopedic surgeon about my bones, other than the herniated disc.pinched nerve. i did have an mri at that time. now, i'll be having an mri of my jawbone. I know there are a lot of people suffering in the world right now,so, I try not to feel sorry for myself.

 [ send green star]
 March 22, 2011 4:41 PM

I didn't mean to worry you about your over-all bone density.   It sounds really good that you don't have a problem that you know about.  I have read a little bit about a few people who have been on strong doses of bone density drugs for a long time developing problems with unusual jaw bone & dental work complications.

I just looked at the website.  Their recommendations for bone density tests:

"Because osteoporosis rarely causes signs or symptoms until it's advanced, the National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends a bone density test if you are:

  • A woman older than age 65 or a man older than age 70, regardless of risk factors
  • A postmenopausal woman with at least one risk factor for osteoporosis
  • A man between age 50 and 70 who has at least one osteoporosis risk factor
  • Older than age 50 with a history of a broken bone
  • Take medications, such as prednisone, aromatase inhibitors or anti-seizure drugs, that are associated with osteoporosis
  • A postmenopausal woman who has recently stopped taking hormone therapy
  • A woman who experienced early menopause"
I had my first bone density test when I was 43 & had significant osteopenia then.  My doctor didn't recommend the test, but she wanted me on a years worth of a medication that diminished bone health.  So I wanted a baseline test & my results weren't very good.  Based on my experience I think it's much better to do the bone density test sooner than age 65.  The test is really quick & easy.  It's nothing to be scared of.  I don't know how old you are or what risk factors you have.   Your dental & jaw issues are probably unrelated to your over-all bone health, but this might worth asking your Dr. if you should also be checking your bone mineral density?

 [ send green star]
 March 24, 2011 4:35 PM

good info. thanks, may i ask what you are taking or doing for your bone density.i'm having a go round with the dentist,

he broke open a fystula(abcess) and has put me on antibiotics.i've been sick to my stomach,so i'm gonna try a different one tonight. everything seems to be out of whack right now. having trouble finding the will to go on.yesterday was my man's birthday, and i was retching in the bathroom, instead of celebrating with him. feel so guilty, although i know it's not my fault.

saw an interesting video with whoopi goldberg, she just started having mouth problems, and was told the same as me. you'll be

losing all your teeth, due to bone loss. She sounded just as  guilty, as i feel, claiming it was all her own fault. probably went through the same dental lecture, as I.

btw. when i pull, what comes out looks like gel.not liquidy,

solid. I must have a boatload of either toxins, saliva,or both.

 [ send green star]
 March 24, 2011 5:15 PM

I googled Whoopi Goldberg.  It sounded like she just didn't go to the dentist for years until dental problems developed over time.
It didn't sound like her problems were related to low bone density.

It sounds really good that the abscess has been drained & is being treated.  That should help you feel better soon.  Have you called to let your dentist know that you are having nausea?  That shouldn't be happening.   Maybe your dentist can change the medication for the better.  Are you feeling like eating?  If you go to long without eating that can diminish your energy & motivation.

I imagine your problems aren't related to low bone density.  It was just a suggestion to get it checked out once you get through all the dental work.

There are a couple of websites I like:
Exercise & nutrition matter.  Bone density can get better.

I hope you can just focus on healing & getting better.

 [ send green star]
 March 24, 2011 5:29 PM

Seems unfair. I've been seeing a Dentist twice yearly my whole life,as far as I can remember. Whoopi was a heroin user.I have never tried anything like that.Dentist says "this has probably been going on since college. No dentist has mentioned it in all this time. I only thought addicts lost all their teeth. I don't smoke. I eat healthy and exercise. must be genetics, stress and neglect? I really don't understand why I'm having this problem. Just keep thinking, deal with it for about six months. This too shall pass.

 [ send green star]
 March 24, 2011 6:00 PM

This doesn't sound like something that should be happening.
Today I saw this article, 14 Facts About Healthy Bones.
I have the idea that Chinese medicine links different acupuncture meridians with different teeth.  If low bone density isn't a problem then maybe a Chinese medicine doctor or naturopathic doctor could help resolve any underlying issues?

what results have you found in all this time? I tried it back then and remember the oil turning white at end time, and I also am wondering if that was what cured a really bad shoulder injury that had been keeping me up nights and that completely healed ! so I plan to begin again tonite at bedtime with sesame seed oil, which is probably as old as this original thread..i have brand new virgin coconut oil that I have been using after reading at (excellent!) of its wonderful benefits and then read the links here, reports coming from folks swishing with it, think it would work better for me in the morning, i love the taste. I want to start first with the sesame seed as it seems to be THE ONE from ancient times and if IS what cured my rotator cuff it will surely finally heal this knee injury, ongoing for too many months now. I tripped over this or that it seemed continuously and then final incident, am not getting over

SO maybe we can get the excitement built up again? I was happy to find it here again and just in time for a relative (in-law) who is dealing with, getting healed and then resurfacing, breast cancer. Have passed it on.. cant hurt, may help ~*

ME<   I adore coconut oil pulling so much doing it first thing in morning and last thing at night.

so glad to hear Siouxs it is helping your dental issues and a dentist recommending is awesome ! Not to discourage too much regarding the antibiotic intense treatment.. will say tho i rarely use them  they do have their place and it is simple to replace the good gut bacteria the antib's destroy at same time, seems like the coconut oil alone would do the job, is is powerful ally. Probably the time issue is what makes using the quicker acting antib's a necessary evil. Then continuing  incorporating the coconut products into a daily routine would keep you in good health

the side effects so far, knee is improving !!! I feel SO GOOD teeth are gleaming, skins glowing.

for the other lovers in this group, it is very good for helping with internal parasite immune system building, and the cats just LUV the taste of coconut oil. we make a milk from a beautiful powder - really good in smoothies too. a tasty breakfast: coconut milk with pineapple (which is awesome ((bromelain is active constituent in it)) to pull out mucous)-- add a dollop of soaked chia seed and sweetner of your choice, i use turbinado sugar and what a good start to the day..

 [ send green star]
 April 07, 2011 12:37 PM

nice recipe. i love chia seeds, but the condition of my mouth

has kept me on a soft food, almost liquid ,diet. i miss my salads filled with chia and hemp seeds, goji berries, cherries (dried)

and steelhead trout,or red mountain trout over spinach, etc.

i've cooked it , and then put it in the blender not as good.

 [ send green star]
 April 07, 2011 7:56 PM

have you soaked the Chia seeds?  That way they have the soft mucilage around them and chewing is unnecessary. It also gives them even more potential nutritional oomph ~ They take on a tapioca like texture and are great in smoothies and puddings   `*~~~
