Free Entertainment October 06, 2006 6:53 PM

There are a million places to find free entertainment, but having a computer is one of the best resources I can find for free entertainment.  However, there are many local sources of free entertainment

1. Walk to the park
2. Walk to a free event..or car pool at least
3. Visit a nursing home
4. Volunteer at your church
5. Visit the local library
6. Ditch cable and do all your news and stuff online; one less bill
7. Play with your kids...really
8. Ditch the play station and play a board game...doesn't use electricity and can be educational like scrabble
9. search out free movies on the net for movie night Friday
10. Read a chapter of a book everynight
11. Play that guitar you have hidden for the kids (they don't care if you only know one song)
12. During the summer some local theaters have free movies, look for them...they are usually kids movies from last year.

Simple Ideas October 28, 2006 10:26 AM

Visit the larger bookstores, such as Barnes & Noble or Borders, to sample music, browse the books, enjoy storytime with the kids, or listen to free entertainment.  Just call ahead for a schedule.

Have a movie night and invite friends or neighbors.  Pop a big batch of popcorn, pass out the napkins, and enjoy!

Check to see if the local zoo, museum, etc. host a free day during the month.

If you can’t afford the entrance fees for festivals or other cultural events, check with the participating organizations to see if the need volunteers.  I’ve attended several plays, a Blues Festival, a Mozart concert, forums, and an Earth Day festival for free (in exhange for volunteering).

Have a treasure hunt.  Make a list of things to find, then send everyone on their way.  The first one back with the most items wins!  The prize can be something simple.

Star gaze – put a blanket outside on a clear night and sip on hot cocoa while you try to identify the constellations.

Hug a tree (close your eyes if you’re embarrassed!).

With the above links Friday night movies are free.  Last night my kids and I watched another episode of Naruto on www.crunchyroll.com  We had popcorn and had a really good time.  The beauty of it is since I work at home I can work while we do this...(I'm on call)....

Also another Free entertainment Idea if you like interaction, they have several events around the country.  I know that every Saturday till dusk 30 miles away they have the blues in the square for local folks.  A bunch of people gather round the court house with a guitar and sing...dance....and enjoy.  Bring your own lawn chair of course.  I intend to take my children soon.

Participate in your local community.  Parades, special events, free art museum day, The park, The library, even asking the local farmer to visit his farm...that is a way to entertain, educate and enrich your life.  Locally we have lots of farms...but up north they were rare.  So to teach my young daughhter about farms I bargained with the farmer.  I would help with chores a little and she could show us around...she liked that!  I got a free work out too!  (Instead of the gym I was at)  My daughter left with fresh picked apples, horse hair on her coat, and memories that will last a lifetime.  I left needing a bath.  (LOL) She wanted to do it every Saturday which the farmer liked but I said no.  I was too tired.
