Hello, I am a new member of this Group, and I just wanted to introduce myself to this Group.
My
name is Edward Janus. I am a Disability Advocate and Activist. My

A
little bit more about me. I have Cerebral Palsy and an amputee (both
legs) confined to a wheelchair. I am homebound, shut-in. I have worked
to earn a living for almost 25 years. Then I had over ten surgeries on
my cervical spinal column (neck area) in my lifetime. Now I have been
on Permanent Social Security Disability since 1996. I was married and
have a daughter. In 1999 an automobile while crossing a street, struck
my wife. She died instantly. Now, I Live Alone. I receive only one
household income. A Social Security check monthly. I would contact
people by telephone, but I am also deaf. I cannot hear very well on the
phone.
Sincerely,
Edward Janus | Disability Advocate and Activist

I am interested in Special Olympics because all children need to be encouraged to live as normally as possible. If they can't play regular sports then praise be for Special Olympics so they don't get left out.
We're very happy to have you here! Feel free to join in on any threads or start new ones that are relevant to the group! Thanks for joining and posting in here.

I just wanted to welcome all newbies to the group,. It is hard to keep up with everything here, I hope you all enjoy the group and please feel free to post any topics you feel are important,
Hello Dee and Jerry. Thanks for the invite. I have a grandson who is mentally and emotionally chalenged. He is my first granddhild and is very special to me. He even gets suicidal so I am not sure what is causing that. I worry about his future. I have also worked with mentally challenged people on a volunteer basis at a clubhouse and I have a mental illness and anxiety disorder myself myself so I certainly know and understand what challenges we can have. I am pretty stable on medication now but had a allot of challenges raising my five children without a my diagnosis of Bipolalr Disorder and General Anxiety disorder. I am really glad to be here and hope to be able to give as well as receive some support. Hello to everyone else. Nice to meet you. I am so happy to be here.
Dee thanks so much for the invite. As well as the welcome!
Not many people know this. I have a mentally challenged cousin, who I, if anything were to happen to his mother and father, would be the main care giver of. Really shocked me 2 years ago when my Aunt and Uncle came and asked me if I would. I didn't waste one second and said of course. Billy is 18 but only has the mind of about a 10 year old. Goodness he is great!
Again thanks for the invite and will see you all around!
Hello everyone, and thanks to Dee for the invitation. I am very interested in this group as I am the care giver to my 47 year old brother who has down's syndrome and I am interested in checking out what might be available to him. Looks like a great group. I'll be back.

I'm very happy to see somebody taking the initiative and trying to get things going in this group. It's a topic close to my heart. I was lucky enough to be in Ireland for the Special Olympics and although I didn't have enough free time to volunteer, I went to as many events as I could. The closing ceremony in particular I will always remember - it was amazing, and what made it even more amazing was that not only did most of the professional singers and athletes etc of Ireland turn out for it, but that Croke Park, which is a massive stadium, was full of ordinary people who had come to show thier support. It was nice to see people really getting behind it. One incident that I will always remember was that I was sitting in the front row, and I was waving and cheering as all the athletes came by. One boy from one team in particular (I think it was Norway, but there were two or three teams whose uniforms were almost identical so I can't say for sure) was so excited to be waved at that every time they came past, he was yelling out hello and asked me if I was having a good time because he was having a great time, and then where had I come from on the next pass, and what did I see and did I like the music etc? It was really sweet. On the last lap, he ran over and shook my hands and gave me a hug and took his team scarf off from his neck and tied it around my head like a bandana. It was a wonderful moment. I still have the bandana, and the wonderful memory.
I would really like to get involved in the Special Olympics movement. I travel a lot, so I will do whatever I can via the web, and look for local involvement when I can. On a personal note, I am currently in the process of setting up my own charity - for both humans and animals - and I would like to make the Special Olympics one of our areas of focus. That's a long way in the future though, as I have a lot of paperwork and red tape to get through just to get the foundation up & running first. But however I can help in the meantime, you can count me in!
Heidi, it's so nice to meet you. Thanks for posting. What a wonderful gift of treasured memories your dad shared with you! I'm sure you helped make many happy memories by being there. Good for you!
Indeed the Special Olympics are a cause close to my heart. As a child, my father and I went every year to be volunteer 'huggers'. My father was a Paramedic, and usually the whole fire crew would go. It allowed me to experiance another, 'walk of life', shall we say, that I would not have otherwise experianced. Opened my heart to the pure love that most mentally disabled people have.
I havent gone in recent years, and do miss it. I'd like to find out when and where I might participate in that again.
And I'd like to wish everyone a Happy and meaningful Easter with your families.
Welcome to the Special Olympics Group! It doesn't appear we have ever had a welcome thread, so whether you are an old or new member feel free to stop in and say hello!
