BREWERTON, N.Y. -- Saturday was cold but it was even colder if you took
a dip in Oneida Lake. That's exactly what more than 250 people did, as
they took part in the third annual Polar Plunge.
The event
is just one of 12 happening across the state to benefit the Special
Olympics. Various organizations and schools sponsor teams to raise big
bucks.
Last year the CSEA raised more than $3,000 and this year they challenged other local unions to get involved.
"Because
we are a part of the community and we need to be with the community on
every day to day issue. So we try to represent our members as well as
our communities," said the CSEA's Colleen Wheaton.
"We probably had
about 250 people go into the water today. Absolutely insane, but they
had a lot of fun. And they helped us generate friends and raise
awareness for our athletes and our programs," said Neal Johnson, CEO
Special Olympics NY.
All of the funds raised from Saturday's plunge will stay locally, and benefit athletes in Central New York.

In 1968, Special Olympics invited the world to
let go of limiting views, prejudices and misconceptions about people
with intellectual disabilities and embrace the idea that they can be
respected, valued, contributing members of society.
There is no charge
to Special Olympics athletes to participate in the movement. Individual
donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special
Olympics New York to offer children and adults with intellectual
disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate
courage and experience joy through participation in the program.
For every family with a family member who has intellectual
disabilities, Special Olympics is a symbol of hope. In order to provide
these services, Special Olympics New York holds fund-raisers, accepts a variety of donations, grants and corporate sponsorships.
From
1969 to today, the Special Olympics New York movement includes more
than 40,000 athletes who train and compete in 22 sports. Despite that
growth, the Special Olympics movement touches just a small percentage
of people in New York with intellectual disabilities.

Volunteer for Special Olympics New York.
The life you change may be your own.
Special
Olympics New York (SONY) would not be able to exist without the
devotion of our volunteers. Our network of more than 25,000 volunteers
do everything from coach, drive the team bus and repair uniforms.
While many volunteers help provide athletes with the core experience,
training and competition, others are involved with every aspect of the
SONY organization. Opportunities exist to sit on local, regional and
statewide committees, host fund-raisers and serve on the Board of
Directors. It's why we say that athletes are the heart of Special
Olympics and volunteers are the muscle and backbone.
Our volunteer pool is dedicated and diverse. Involvement with Special
Olympics creates pride, lifelong friendships and rewards of
immeasurable value. Volunteers are an important part of a global
movement that provides athletes with intellectual disabilities the
excitement, joy and personal fulfillment associated with sport training
and competition."
Whatever State you are in you can check on the location in your area to help them out.. So please help..It really will fill your heart with smiles..
