Hi All November 05, 2006 7:39 AM

Hi guys, I am the group host, just saying high and hopefully getting a discussion going! I went to Boarding School from the age of 5, until I was 17. It wasn't a totally negative experience (I believe that there are some good things about Boarding Schools, in the long run at least). However, the main bad atribbute Boarding Schools (And other institutions such as care homes I guess) have, is that they're quite often pretty soulless places. Physical and Mental contact isn't really encouraged, making it hard to relate to people in later life. The other main problem I saw when I was there, is the fact that there isn't a great deal of privacy there (At least in your own home, there are 4 or 5 people there at the most usually, where as at school, there are a lot more than that). This means that I tried to catch up on time alone during the times I went back to my Mum's, so I didn't really speak to anyone there either, unless I had too. I believe that this kind of problem is epidemic amongst people who used to go away to school. I also believ however, that where there's a will, there's a way! I personally realised I had a problem, when I was dealing with a number of things that happened early on in my life. I told a few of my friends and most of them were great with it! They gave me support when I was dealing with it and they let me know they cared. I realised then that there was a big part of my life missing and that was it. I hadn't let anyone really talk to me before then and I never let anyone knew what I think of them! I realised then that Boarding School was an obsticle, which was preventing me from dealing with my problems. Once I realised that I had a problem with physical and mental contact with people, I decided to act on it. I believe I'm more socially active and open now and I feel much happier for that! I haven't had any physical contact with anyone still, unless you count passing objects to people. I believe I can deal with that though, it's just a case of how. I tried to see if there were any support groups for this, but there weren't. I think that this is simply because this isn't talked about enough. One of the main effects on Institutionalisation, is the dificulty in communicating, either physically or mentally. Therefore, this makes this particular subject less talked about. Well, thats my story, I'd be glad to hear yours, along with what you think of my points, as well as any knew points you want to bring to the discussion.  [ send green star]
