Commercial organic vs homemade and cooked vs raw January 21, 2007 8:41 AM

Hi everyone, what are your opinions on Commercial organic kibble vs cooking organic people food for your dog at home?

Also if you do feed or want to feed your pet organic "people" food do you feed it cooked or raw?  Should you feed your dog a whole food supplement with enzymes and probiotics for several weeks before allowing a kibble fed dog to eat raw meat?

Raw food and organic food January 21, 2007 9:06 AM

Here is a link for raw pet food that states it doesn't have any hormones, antibiotics, etc... in it.  Again, I have never tried it, just putting it up so everyone can make there own opinion about it.

Here is a link that has several brands of organic pet food.  Also if you click on the cat product section, there are several organic cat foods.

I feed January 21, 2007 10:33 PM

Hi,

I feed the kids Dry food with crackins (pork grease)  I also give them raw (frozen/defrosted) deer meat about a few cups of cut up chunks a day to each Furkids, some less depending on size..

We also give them raw bones defrosted each day..

They are very healthy and tend to eat very little of the dry food (hi pro dry food) with cracklins.. they prefer the deer verses the dry...

Deer is available everywhere and if you have a freezer you can call the local sheriff or conservation dept.. when they get a local call about a hit deer you can request they call you or some will even deliver it.. you could also ask your hunting neighbors to give you any extra's they get that they don't want..

It goes a long way.. and deer has been feeding many animals and people for years..

deer January 24, 2007 5:08 PM

That is great that you have a source of deer.  It is probably more natural and less toxic than most meats- as long as the deer hasn't been eating out of a commercial chemical filled farm!!  Up here they are mostly in the woods but trying to get one that was hit is impossible.  When I worked on the PD there were usually 5 trucks there before I showed up!!  Then of course the person who hits it get first choice but they were always tourists and horrified that I would ask such a question.  Then I would have to try to find out which truck showed up first and of course they all were there first!  Then we had a list of old guys who couldn't go out to hunt anymore and we would try to give them the deers first.  It's pretty gruesome but I would rather see the dead animal be put to use rather than wasted. It's just kind of a funny site up here when it happens-  it is like a clown car scene!   [ send green star]

OK, I have finally made the jump and am now feeding Kody a raw diet!  The book that finally helped me make the decision is The natural encyclopedia of pet care.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0658009966/104-8235232-0981501

It is pro raw food but the book doesn't try to push it onto you.  I have only started reading the book and even the sample meals for dogs and cats look really good.

Kody seems to like it but we still have to cut out the chicken thigh bones and show them to him otherwise he will swallow them whole and that isn't such a good thing!  If we cut it up or show it to him then he is OK.  I will be putting up some recipes in the recipes section as soon as I get a chance.

Kody seems to have more energy than ever.  As many of you might know, Rotties are not built for long distance travel.  We decided to bring the dogs with us when we went riding so they could get their exercise at the same time.  We took the shortest loop trail that we know which is about an hour or so on horseback with some trotting.  Normally Kody wouldn't have been able to make it.  He would have gotten really sick and barfed.

That is why we took it a little bit at a time at first because we didn't want to stress his body but everytime we stopped he just kept trying to play with the horses by jumping all around them!  We finished the whole trail and he was still fine and wide awake.  He did take a few hour nap when we got home but he does that at home anyway.

I really think the raw food and added food processed veggies are helping a lot!   Does anyone else feed raw.  What do you think about it?

I have been feeding my two large breed dogs raw food since they were babies.....I feed them cooked table scraps daily and I cook soups/stews for them every week....they have comercial food (dry kibbles) available to them at all times, but they generally do not eat them.....I give them bone in meats, raw, frozen and defrosted depending on the temperatures outside a few times a week. I also fix them herbal teas daily. They will eat all vegetables, cooked and raw except for onion and garlic, these two I cook into there soups/stews.

That is cool.  I was wondering what herbal teas you make for them and their particular uses.  I drink some herbal teas for the immune system and liver detox.  I also drink essiac tea and give it to the dogs as well.  We buy the stuff from oregons wild harvest and then prepare it at home.  [ send green star]

I feed my three canine children homemade cooked food, mostly. Plus some raw vegetables for treats. And there are these applesauce muffins I bake that they go wild for!

Good baby bites November 29, 2008 2:45 PM

I read somewhere that onions weren't good for the furry kids. My kids, 3 canines, love raw carrots, beans, and squashes that are sliced. Plus we fix them a healthy GBB with rolled oats, peanut butter, Kosher of course, and other good for me and them goodies. Ya'll are right in that they prefer homecooked to dog food.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I think they like homemade food so much because they think they're eating the same thing we're eating. My three get this look on their faces while I'm eating, sort of a 'please, mommy? Just a taste?' expression. Same as when I feed them their food. I have to feed them with a spoon to keep them from eating too quickly! Spoiled brats! LoL
