It has always bothered me how many schools make rules without keeping low-income families in mind! Some government funding is based on how many students are in school on just one particular day a year -- how ridiculous! Funds might be gained with academic achievements, yet held back for other (really quite senseless) reasons! One year, our district suddenly decided it was a rule that ALL students had to have good gloves, coats, boots, and, hats, (for waiting on the bus). However, over 55% of the district gets free lunches and obviously cannot afford all these new items, especially with more than one child! The "student needs" lists, for beginning school, include various items normally considered teacher's supplies. Most families cannot afford this, especially when nearly $60 per student. We don't even have one low-income person on the school board, which is a sin!! Yes, I'm considering running when the next seat is coming open.
Thoughts on Solutions:
Community businesses and organizations should help with generous donations -- as an investment in the area's future.  The same should be done  on a national level.  Also,  as a society, we should demand that a portion of ALL professional sports profits are used to help  poverty school districts.
Comments, please........
PEACE~

I'd say my response to this would differ depending on the indiviual circumstances. Most of the poor children in our area that belong to BIG sized families with many children happen to be latino. There not as many of other nationalities with an obvious birth control problem.

Maybe since most of these overly large, poor families are Catholics that refuse birthcontrol based on their religious beliefs they should go to Catholic schools, and or request charity from the very religon that demands them to be impoverished with umteen children? Instead of expecting the government, and/or tax payers to pay?I often wonder why it is that I, (and other tax payers) am to pay for such families that refuse to take responsibility for their own Birth control?

I am single with no children. I have a cat, I am low income, I am not able to afford to have even one child. Therefore I do not have any children. I have taken RESPONSIBILITY for my birth control.

There are may families that knew when to say when. They have one or two children and that is it! I applaud these families!

It is one thing to be well off and have a BIG family and then suddenly have some awful event send you to poverty and thus a need for  TEMPORARY assistance for the many children you can no longer afford...

However, it is a whole other situation to knowingly give birth to one, then another , then another, and another, and another, when from before the first you bearly had enough money for bus fare and food for yourself! Get my point on this one?

Thus, why I say, in some instances I think there are very unjust practices in certain schools/districts which neglect the basic needs of impoverished children/families. While others have been given too much year after year with little or no accountability on the part of parents, teachers, administrators, government officials, etc.

One thing is for certian... there needs to be a lot more DETAILS provided for ALL Parents and Taxpayers as to just how much of ALL $ goes to what/where and WHY!
