Institute of Animal Technology (IAT) Congress 2008, from 4th-6th March,
finishing with the Congress Dinner and Dance Thursday evening. Vivisectors from
the UK and abroad will be there. Planned presentations include; ‘Success in
the face of protest’ by HLS. (So it looks like we’re invited to speak!).
Also, delegates from: Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Imperial College London, etc.
MacDonald Higland Resorts are nestled within the Cairngorms National Park;
there are four hotels within the resort - the luxurious 4 star Macdonald
Highlands Hotel, the Academy Hotel and the newly acquired Macdonald Four
Seasons and Aviemore Inn
What you can do:
This hotel company has a right to know about the cruelty inflicted by members
of IAT and what’s going on inside HLS by members of IAT, which is where you
come in...
1 - Contact MacDonald Aviemore Highland Resorts urgently and tell them you will
boycott them whilst they support animal cruelty. Let them know about IAT and
Huntingdon’s appalling track record for animal cruelty!
2 - Organise leafleting, or peaceful demo's at your local MacDonald hotel and
at the Congress itself. They have around 70 other sites in the UK and abroad.

==========
To Whom It May Concern
I am writing to you regarding your business relationship with Institute of
Animal Technology (IAT) and HLS. It has come to my attention that your hotel
group is hosting the IAT’s UK congress in March 2008. Some of the delegates
are from HLS, the most exposed animal testing laboratory in the world.
The IAT is the body representing thousands of UK animal technicians who work in
laboratories, inflicting suffering and killing the animals supposedly in their
‘care’. If this conference goes ahead, I will henceforth boycott all
MacDonald hotels and resorts, and will encourage others to do the same.
Numerous undercover investigations have revealed animal technicians grossly
abusing animals in many different labs across the world, the most well-known
instance of which is the footage obtained at Huntingdon Life Sciences of
workers punching beagle puppies in the face.
Steve Owen, a key employee of Huntingdon Life Sciences, was instrumental in
organising the conference in 2003 in Ireland and many HLS employees are members
of the IAT. The IAT tried to hoodwink the CityWest Hotel in Dublin by not
disclosing the nature of their organisation.
You may not be aware that HLS is the world’s most exposed animal testing
laboratory. They have repeatedly been caught out on film committing acts of
cruelty both in the US and the UK. They have been caught punching beagle
puppies, and cutting open live primates without painkillers. They have been
exposed for shoddy work, and falsified data. During one study on wild caught
baboons, HLS broke the law 520 times but were never prosecuted.
In late 2007, a senior scientist from HLS in the USA has filed a lawsuit after
he claims he was being pressured into falsifying data. This is a sham of a
company with a poor reputation and I should not think you would like to be
associated with this, or members of the IAT who work there.
I don't expect you to take my word for it but you can see the cruelty yourself,
as shown on national TV; http://www.shac.net/HLS/exposed.html. Anyone who goes
to work to inflict suffering on animals and kill them in pointless,
unscientific experiments should not be welcome at MacDonald Hotels to make a
compassionate decision to cancel this congress.”
Thank you for your time, and I do hope that you will be reconsidering your
position and no longer supporting this cruelty.

Tell Island Veterinary School to Stop Cutting Up and Killing Animals!PETA has received shocking complaints and graphic photographs from students at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts who are being forced to perform multiple unnecessary surgeries on living animals, help the animals recover from the surgeries, and then kill them—even though many veterinary schools stopped this archaic, deadly practice long ago. Ross University students do not even have the option to do alternative projects if they do not want to harm animals they have cared for and grown to love—their refusal to mutilate and kill animals results in an automatic failing grade.

1. Biodefense Funds Used for Senseless Experiments on Chimpanzees
http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/biodefense_chimpanzees
Biodefense Funds Used for Senseless Experiments on Chimpanzees
Project Bioshield is a multi-agency government initiative to identify potential bioterrorism threats and develop counter-measures. This project distributes millions of dollars to various agencies and private companies to create drugs from antibodies that neutralize potential bioterrorism threats, such as anthrax.
Project
Bioshield has been very successful. In fact, human-based antibody
treatments for anthrax are now being produced in large enough
quantities to fill the National Stockpile so that American citizens
will be protected in the event of a bioterrorism attack.
It seems like this should be the happy ending to the story, but instead it is a classic example of government mismanagement and a tragedy for a group of chimpanzees hidden away in a National Institutes of Health (NIH) laboratory. Despite the millions of dollars that have already been spent—and the fact that we now have several human-based anthrax antibody treatments—a few NIH experimenters are still getting huge amounts of Project Bioshield money to develop new antibodies to anthrax and other diseases.
Although this is clearly a redundant waste of biodefense money that could be going to legitimate efforts, this is not the worst part of the story. Unbelievably, these experimenters have decided to make these antibodies in chimpanzees!
Chimpanzees share so much with humans—including our capacity to learn, feel pain, experience loneliness, and yearn for freedom from captivity. While their antibodies also share some structural similarities with those from humans, antibodies from any other species have the potential to cause deadly allergic reactions in humans.
NIH experimenters confine these sensitive and social animals (sometimes for as long as 20 years) and expose them to horrific diseases and painful bone-marrow extractions to recover antibodies. They then attempt to manipulate these antibodies to look like those of humans so that they won't cause deadly reactions in humans—all this is done despite the fact that human-based antibodies are already available!
These chimpanzee-based antibodies are not needed, and their safety is untested. These animals are suffering for no reason except the greediness and curiosity of a few experimenters and poor oversight by government agencies. PETA sent several letters of concern to government officials and agencies as soon as we heard about this deplorable situation.
Please speak out to oppose these senseless experiments by sending a letter to the director of the NIH urging him to stop these absurd and cruel experiments immediately.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Re: Transamerica & Huntingdon Life Sciences
It has come to my attention that your company is currently the top shareholder
of Europes largest animal testing laboratory, Huntingdon Life Sciences. They
have facilities in the UK, and also in the US. You have recently increased your
shareholding to 29,000 shares, and I think you have the right to know what it
is you are buying shares in.
HLS are the world's most notorious animal testing facility and have been
exposed time and time again. There is evidence from the 1980's to 2006 of
animal cruelty, scientific fraud, and sloppy procedures.
HLS were caught on film punching beagle puppies in the face and cutting open
primates without any anesthetic. If you are in any doubt about what goes on in
the secret labs of HLS, then please read what their own workers had to say just
last year, and see footage taken inside the lab itself:
http://www.shac.net/MISC/Inside_HLS.html
HLS has also surrounded itself in controversy once again this year, as an ex
employee has filed a law suit claiming he was sacked for refusing to falsifying
data, this has serious human health implications. I am sure you will agree the
footage taken in HLS is horrific and the workers account is utterly shameful.
I hope that you can use your position to put an end to your company's support
of the disgusting cruelty at Huntingdon Life Sciences by selling your shares
like so many companies before you have already.

This one is Covance:

HLS kills an average 500 animals each day for tests "only reliable 5-25% of the time," one HLS record contends. Documentation from six investigations has exposed HLS for multiple breaches of the U.S. Animal Welfare Act, the arrest of workers on animal cruelty charges, more than 520 infringements of Good Laboratory Practice in England, and a $50,000 payoff to the U.S. Agriculture Department for misstated records and animal welfare violations. HLS also has a criminal record in the UK for failure to file company accounts on time.
As recently as late 2005, two former HLS employees from the Beagle Unit left their jobs distressed over the animal suffering they witnessed daily for 12 months. According to their tape-recorded testimonial, animals are inadequately anesthetized before invasive procedures, such as painful extraction of bone marrow from the chest bone.
You likely find animal abuse as unconscionable as I do. I urge you to issue a candid statement that conveys your refusal to do business with Huntingdon Life Sciences.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration;I welcome a response,
To whom it may concern,
Your company is currently supplying Huntingdon Life Sciences, a notorious animal testing laboratory with supplies. You may not be aware:
They have been exposed 7 times for the most horrific
animal cruelty ever seen at an animal testing facility.
1.)Lab technicians violently shaking and punching beagle puppies until
they urinate with fear.
2.)Testing products that have been banned, (such
as CFCs which were banned 15 years previously).
3.)Falsifying test results.
4.)Disection of live monkeys without anaesthetic.
And these examples are just SOME OF THE HORRORS....

Dear Representative, Senators, and Dr. Schwartz:
I am extremely discouraged the agency Congress established to facilitate use
of non-animal research systems hasn't evolved with modern science. The
Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods
(ICCVAM) has validated just one non-animal test -- while ICCVAM's European
equivalent has more than 20 human-focused methods in place, including
non-animal tests for skin corrosion, absorption, and irritation.
This is unacceptable for humans, animals and progress. I respectfully ask my
elected representatives, ICCVAM, and its member agencies to intensify
efforts to fund and validate non-animal research tools.
I am concerned about the EPA and FDA's continuing use of non-predictive
animal toxicity tests. The U.S. should keep pace with international
standards. Non-animal research is widely embraced throughout Europe, due to
its primary relevance to human health.
U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt has said nine of
ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because "we cannot
accurately predict how they will behave in people based on animal studies."
Furthermore, a new report from the National Academy of Sciences, "Toxicity
Testing in the 21st Century," calls for non-animal methodology to analyze
chemical toxicity in humans.
The report focuses on in vitro techniques that assess a chemical's influence
on biological routes utilizing cells, cell lines, or cellular components of
human derivation. According to the National Research Council (NRC),
scientific advisors to the U.S. government, this revitalized strategy "would
generate more-relevant data to evaluate risks people face, expand the number
of chemicals that could be scrutinized, and reduce the time, money, and
animals involved in testing."
The NRC also emphasized the reduction and potential elimination of
conventional animal experimentation. Expedient non-animal systems produce
applicable data that can lead to improved regulatory decisions. Non-animal
options decrease time, cost and suffering.
Data from distressed animals, on the other hand, does not result in accurate
extrapolation to humans. Lab variables such as pain, injury, confinement,
loneliness and repeated handling yield misleading data. Findings published
in Contemporary Topics in Laboratory Animal Science show researchers are
unable to separate the effects of stress hormones from the substance or
disease under analysis.
The U.S. government annually pours hundreds of millions of tax dollars into
animal tests on previously documented chemicals. In the meantime, an inert
ICCVAM does little to validate superior non-animal tests. I urge ICCVAM to
do its job. I urge Congress to enact funding so ICCVAM can do its job.

PETA has learned that Covance, a company with a history of egregious cruelty to animals and the world's largest breeder of dogs for use in experimentation, is using Japan Airlines to transport beagle puppies from New York City to vivisection laboratories in Tokyo. PETA is asking Japan Airlines to follow the lead of Air Canada and other compassionate airlines by refusing to transport dogs and other animals to vivisection laboratories. Help us persuade Japan Airlines to stop participating in the cruel global trade in animals!
The journey to Japan can take up to 28 hours. Dogs are crammed into tiny transport cages, may not receive sufficient food or water during the long journey, and may be forced to sit in their own waste. Cargo holds often lack adequate air conditioning, heating, and ventilation, so animals may endure extreme discomfort from temperature extremes or suffocate from insufficient oxygen. And this is just the start of the animals' suffering.
Contact Japan Airlines and ask the company to stop shipping animals to Japan for use in laboratories.

and ask them politely to have a look. Everything is on there.
Moshe Solomonow, a vivisector at the University of Colorado at Denver, cuts open cats' backs down to their spinal cords and attaches "S" hooks to their spinal ligaments. A machine then applies pressure in an effort to approximate what might happen if the cats were carrying heavy loads on their backs. Dr. Marius Maxwell, M.D., Ph.D., explains that "it makes no sense to use cats in studies designed to learn about human back issues. Solomonow's experiments are redundant and the applicability to humans is non-existent."
A whistleblower recently contacted PETA because he was concerned that the cats were still conscious and able to feel pain because of improper anesthesia. Although the whistleblower contacted the university's animal use committee, the committee's only response was to recommend adding a second drug that does not have any anesthetic effects when pain is substantial.
Please contact the University of Colorado's president and demand that he put an end to these cruel experiments.

(Europe’s largest contract testing laboratory
carrying out toxicity tests on animals)
• Shocking evidence of beagles, rats and mice
poisoned in toxicity tests for the agrochemical,
chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Substances tested included insecticides, dental
anti-plaque agents and tranquillisers.
• Animals suffering and dying after being force-
fed, injected or dosed with highly toxic
substances.
• Breaches in government codes of practice
regarding the housing and care of animals.
Beagles forced to live on bare concrete floors
with just a scattering of sawdust. No nesting
materials provided for rats or mice.
• The callous attitudes of staff responsible for the
care of these animals.
At the time, the Government dismissed the BUAV’s
concerns stating that HRC “would serve as an
excellent example to others.” Yet, seven years later,
following another undercover investigation, this
time by Channel 4 TV, members of HLS staff were
filmed shouting and hitting beagle pups (two were
subsequently convicted of cruelty to animals), whilst
others were exposed for fabricating evidence.
Here's an example;
Dear (whoever it is),
I am writing to you because you are a customer/supplier of HLS. I would just like to point out to you that HLS have been caught out on numerous occassions abusing animals in their 'care', falsifying data, taking and dealing drugs on the premises and even allowing dangerous animals to escape into the community.
HLS will test anything for anyone regardless of the suffering to animals and people.
Please see

for evidence of their exploits.
I would politiely ask your company to dissassociate itself from this fraudulent and cruel business.

Dear Drs. Meehan, Bow, Jacobs and Ms. Pelletier:
I am dismayed to learn Hartford Hospital incorporates live pig labs for
surgery trainees and practitioners in its monthly Advanced Trauma Operative
Management (ATOM) program. I understand animals undergo 14 artificially
induced injuries, including traumatic puncture wounds to the bowel, bladder,
kidney, ureter, pancreas, duodenum, stomach, diaphragm, liver, inferior vena
cava, spleen and heart.
The five pigs utilized in each 3-hour lab either die during the drills or
are destroyed upon conclusion. U.S. Department of Agriculture documents show
Hartford Hospital routinely constrains more than 100 pigs for ATOM
exercises, along with mice, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and sheep for use in
other experiments.
I respectfully ask you to join over 95% of American medical schools that no
longer use animals in surgical training. Most Advanced Trauma Life support
courses have discarded live animal labs and the American College of Surgeons
has removed animal experimentation from its surgery curriculum.
Surgery upon distressed animals delays knowledge pertinent to human health.
While pigs and people share similar organs, each species is so diverse in
terms of its anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics -- animal
studies have endangered public safety with misleading data.
Moreover, researchers cannot separate the effects of stress hormones from
the process under analysis. Findings published in Contemporary Topics in
Laboratory Animal Science (Autumn 2004) reveal animals display quantifiable
stress reactions to routine laboratory practices. These stress effects can
influence the researcher's understanding of scientific discovery.
It is unethical to rely upon old-fashioned animal research when so many
human-applicable, non-animal methods are now available. Research from U.S.
and U.K. universities reveals a pig's intelligence level as above a
three-year-old child. Certainly, these bright, sentient creatures experience
great pain and suffering as surgical "models" confined in laboratories.
Please terminate the use of live animals in surgical courses at Hartford
Hospital. Thank you for your valuable time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Michelle,

We recently learned that Hartford Hospital , in concert with the UConn School of Medicine, administers a monthly program called the Advanced Trauma Operative Management course (ATOM). ATOM includes a 3-hour lab session during which surgery trainees and practitioners manage 14 different traumatic injuries (see right column of page 472) that are intentionally inflicted in live adult pigs. The animals must suffer through penetrating injuries such as stab wounds to numerous organs in the abdomen and chest, including the kidney, stomach, spleen and heart. Please "take action" to protest Hartford Hospital's live pig trauma lab.

I am concerned about the welfare of animals used in the development of
Landis International agricultural products. I understand Landis contracted
Huntingdon Life Sciences (HL
year.
I respectfully ask you to join the international list of HLS customers,
suppliers, and financiers who severed ties with HLS after learning about the
lab's habitual falsification of data and animal cruelty.
HLS kills an average 500 animals each day for tests "only reliable 5-25% of
the time," one HLS record contends. Documentation from six investigations
has exposed HLS for multiple breaches of the U.S. Animal Welfare Act, the
arrest of workers on animal cruelty charges, more than 520 infringements of
Good Laboratory Practice in England, and a $50,000 payoff to the U.S.
Agriculture Department for misstated records and animal welfare violations.
HLS also has a criminal record in the UK for failure to file company
accounts on time.
As recently as late 2005, two former HLS employees from the Beagle Unit left
their jobs distressed over the animal suffering they witnessed daily for 12
months. According to their tape-recorded testimonial, animals are
inadequately anesthetized before invasive procedures, such as painful
extraction of bone marrow from the chest bone.
Careless workers transfer blood into the wrong tubes. "One license holder
would go in and out about five times with the same needle, not hitting the
vein," the one-time employee maintains. "I saw co-workers grab [dogs] by the
scruff, shout and swear at them, swing them by the scruff and slap them."
I've personally viewed substantiated accounts of HLS technicians who kill
dogs by flooding their lungs with toxic materials meant for the animals'
stomachs. In one investigative video clip, a technician repeatedly punches a
screaming 4-month-old beagle in the face. During a supposedly post-mortem
dissection, another tech slices into the chest of a convulsing monkey.
You likely find animal abuse as unconscionable as I do. I urge you to issue
a candid statement that conveys your refusal to do business with Huntingdon
Life Sciences.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration,

Shac and SPEAK have used email alerts as a very good tool.
How it works..
Alerts are sent out about new or returning customers, share holders, people who deal with vivisectionists and a list of addresses is supplied. Everyone emails and their computers get loaded with them. They cannot ignore it and more often than not they will sever ties just to stop the barage.

Here's the place to post any action alerts that people can participate in. They must be dated and current and will be deleted once the campaign is done.
So lets get going.....
