Via Robin Olson (KitschKat): 19-year-old cat abandoned in CT October 06, 2009 4:04 AM

I am taking the liberty of posting this here, even though it is not a Georgia cat, since Robin is a friend of WCR and has fostered their cats and contributed to the FRs.

This is the shocking case of a family that simply left their 19-year-old (!!!!!) cat behind when they moved. If anyone in the NE can help this sweet creature a loving home to finish her life in, that would be wonderful.

God must reserve... October 06, 2009 11:41 AM

a special place in hell for the kind of people who would do this.  Similarly, I bet Melody has a special place in heaven waiting for her.  If I didn't have four dogs, I would take her, transport and all, but I think her last years deserve to be happy, quiet ones, and that's one thing my home can't provide (the quiet part, at least!)

How horrible, what an act of cruelty for someboy they shared life for so many years.

I am sorry I am X thousand miles away.

I wish, somebody will help Melody spend the rest of her life in loving care.

Looks like sweet Melody has found someone to love her....... October 06, 2009 8:43 PM

Just found this:  Want to make it clear that (much as I would like to) it's not me doing the good deed.  Melody reminds me of my Maggie, who was adopted at 14 and lived another four years, adored and adoring.
Plans are set. I'm meeting up with Carol on Sunday at noon. Melody, as scrawny as she looks, is quite healthy for a cat her age, according to the vet. Carol is going to give me Fancy Feast cans for her (she won't eat dry). I'll have to monitor her eating, putting her in my bathroom at night, for a while anyway. I don't need any porkers in my cat family.

Carol said if she ever needs to go to the vet, to send her the bill and she'll pay it. We really don't know how much time she has left. But I'll make it as comfortable as possible for her with LOTS of . She loves to be carried around, and will sit on the couch next to me. All she does is eats, sleeps and poops. I'm home alot so I'll be able to monitor them all, including Bad A$$ Buddy, who gets frisky. Carol said she can guarantee that Melody CAN hold her own against the boys.

So, looks like my cat pop. will be back up to 6 again. I KNEW there was a reason why I didn't take the kitten. I'm SURE RB Mollie Rose has something to do with this.

I promise I'll take pictures. - from Pet Talk at Pet of the Day.com
I never cease to wonder what the internet can accomplish among us pet lovers.

i just love a happy ending!!! October 07, 2009 2:10 AM

what wonderful news!!!! i am so happy that the kitty has found a home and it sure does sound like a good home where she will get the love, attention and care that she needs. (as an untrusting and skeptical person, i can honestly say this really does sound like a wonderful home for the cat.)

i still am at a loss how people could have a cat for that long and then just abandon her like that. well i guess their loss will be someone elses gain.

let's hope the 20 yr old cat at NEGAS  NE GA animal shelter is as lucky.

Mercades is a 20yr old cat!! She was a owner surrender and the couple that owned her has had her for 20 years!! They are a older couple and are in bad health, their daughter had to fly in to take care of them and said they just was not able to care for a cat anymore!! Mercades is in perfect health according to her vet!! Her vet said that she is the oldest cat that he sees and she is in perfect health!!! She is declawed on front and has already been spayed!! She was very well taken care of and is just a little scared in this new place!! Her adoption fee is ONLY $15!! We can get her health records for her new owner if they need them!!! She needs a family that will just let her live out the last few years of her life in their home!!

I am so glad that Melody found a home!

I could pay the adoption fee for poor Mercedes if it is for her to find a loving care.

send me a message if it is needed! I can pay only via PayPal because I am abroad.

Has anyone considered Purrever Ranch if she's not in a no-kill shelter?  They specialize in senior "kittizens."

isn't amazing the excuses people have? the daughter flies to where the parents are to take care of the parents. she says the parents are not able to take care of the cat any more. what she should have said is that she is not willing to care for the cat while she takes care of the parents. i'm surprised the parents tolerated that. i would have told her "the cat stays. if you don't like it then you can go back where you came from."

FLuffee-OldLadyFightsCrime668.gif picture by twistedprincess

if she didn't leave at that point, i would grab anything within reach that i could pick up (excluding the cat of course) and start throwing things at her.

once i got her out the door, i would surely give her an image of me she could carry in her mind for many years, even after i am gone.

when i get old and if i still have a cat, do not try to come in between us or you are likely to get attacked tooth and nail... and my cat might even join in too!

makes me think of a song sung by karen catdistemper...

And when the evening comes we smile,
So much for our life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to roll,
And yes, We are not young.

Sharing horizons that are new to us,
running off threats along the way,
Talking it over just the two of us,
rolling together day to day
Together.

this is how we would roll...

any way, i am glad to know that things worked out well for both the cat mentioned in the original post and for mercades.

oh darlene I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THOSE GRAPHICS!

when my dad died and I started going up to help take care of my mom who had parkinson's, i brought along my foster kittens who MEOWED the 2 hours drive and drove me crazy. but they played and entertained my mom. and one would always want to sleep next to her--or ON her. it really tickled me and her caregiver, Juana, when Mom who did not have much strength would suddenly summon the energy to MOVE that offending kitten and drop her  on the floor. then mom would turn to us and say with a smile, 'that 3 pound kitten started feeling like 30 lbs. on me.'

Doc my own senior kitty went to live with mom and Juana full time because Doc started grouching here at the foster kittens. When Doc ate, Mom would then be tempted to eat. and vice versa. Juana just set both their meals on the big dining room table and was glad to see Mom pick up her spoon and have an appetite.

When Mom passed, Juana took Doc home with her (even though she had allergy to that cat.) When Doc got really old --their family cooked fresh salmon and tuna for that cat.

OMG, there are still a few decent people left in this world..... October 15, 2009 10:24 PM

Three happy endings in one thread.  I am warm and fuzzy.

I'm just sorry I've been so short of funds that I haven't been able to contribute to any rescues lately, but hopefully that will change.

yes janet, there are a few decent human beings left on this planet. and you truly have to appreciate them as they seem to be becoming more of a raritywith the passing of time.

and don't feel too alone janet. i'm presently donating 20-50% less per month now than i was in the first half of the year. for the first time in my nearly 25 years of employment with the post office i feel like my job security is being pulled out from under my feet. and i am far from being alone feeling like this. what once was a secure job that someone would really have to put in some effort in order to lose has become a job that one can find themselves having to move 500 miles away and qualify for a part time position they don't want and if they fail to qualify/don't pass the test then they are fired. it doesn't matter how many years of service one has in at this point in time. no one is immune to the changes happening with the post office. (next month i will have 25 years in and out of 511 clerks in long beach, would you believe i am #243 on the seniority list. no, that #243 was not a typo). so i am trying to save up for that possible rainy day that could be in my future.

barbara, wow, you were lucky to have someone so wonderful to be a caregiver for your mother. it has been said that petting a dog or cat (or whatever animal) is good for a person. it lowers their stress level and blood pressure and probably some other things too. it has been said that people with pets on an average tend to live a bit longer than those who do not have pets. apparently juana knew this as she treated the pet like one of the family and encouraged interaction and togetherness between your mother and the cat. your mother was very blessed to have someone as wise and caring as juana to care for her in what was her remaining time on earth. and you also were blessed to have someone you felt comfortable with caring for your mother.

Just thought i would let you know that this was one of the most sweetest couples and with the most respect for cats that i have seen in a long time. They are so gentle and loving with her--I know she is going to be very very well taken care of and with all the love she could ever want. I know her every need will be handle to the fullest.

He really has a way with cats. Some of mine that take a while to get to know you acted like they have always known him. He is truly a gentle Ben.

I have had Ashley for 2 years now and if i had not meet him personaly i would still have her. I am so happy they also chose her and Wagner to take to their wonderful home.

This couple was TRULY HEAVEN SENT.
