Calling Charlie, vols. 1 through 3 or Rangel Roundup

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
bingo number 25
Yesterday when we faxed Congress and the White House to congratulate Sen. Harkin for verbally supporting single payer, I started receiving the faxes back (by fax) from Rep. Charlie Rangel's office.  The same thing had happened twice before.  So you took forceful action, you called his offices and the results are in.  We sent over 8500 faxes to Rep. Rangel's New York office alone, and undoubtedly many more to his DC office.  By the end of the day, one staffer (who was still there after the office closed) counting faxes sheepishly admitted that even his mother was getting on his case about single payer.  Way to go.  Click here to read the stories in Calling Charlie vols. 1-3.
Feeling heat from constituents who are actually making those phone calls, our legislators are trying to come up with a new invention to substitute for real comprehensive healthcare reform. Robert Reich says to watch your wallet. (Also: Even some forced-pregnancy advocates worry about giving terrorists what they want, and Edie Falco on Healthcare.)
It's Time to Fight for Our Human Rights
Our fight for equal access to healthcare for all is about democracy, human rights, civil rights, and basic human decency.
Congress and our legislators are violating our human rights by keeping Single Payer reform off the table, and not allowing the Congressional Budget Office to compare the costs of various reform bills (which would clearly show that single payer is the best for the country economically). Our legislators have sold out to corporate interests to the detriment of the health and lives of the rest of us.
65% of Americans and a majority of physicians want single payer healthcare. Our elected officials refuse to do what the majority of Americans want and need, and people are dying because of it.
TAKE ACTION:
1. Here’s the Secy’s email: Kathleen.Sebelius@hhs.gov
2. CALL, EMAIL, AND FAX PRESIDENT OBAMA:
COMMENT HERE: http://www.healthreform.gov/contact/inde...
AND HERE: http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/
CALL AND FAX:
Phone: Comments: 202-456-1111;?Switchboard: 202-456-1414;
FAX: 202-456-2461
3. It's time for Montanans to BEGIN CIRCULATING FORMAL LEGAL PETITIONS TO RECALL SENATOR BAUCUS. 50,000 signatures will trigger a recall election. The mere presence of petitions in circulation would concentrate the mind of Baucus on the interests of voters not donors.
4. Other states should mount recall petitions against their Senators who have blocked single payer. Include Sen. Grassley (Iowa).
WE MUST JOIN TOGETHER TO FIGHT FOR OUR CIVIL RIGHTS AND BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. Health care is a basic human right.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:
1. We need to bombard the Media, White House, Senator Kennedy’s office, and our Senators and Representatives with Calls, Faxes and Emails for SINGLE PAYER. Let them know the following:
• The FACT that Single Payer will save BILLIONS of dollars and is the only viable economic solution. The study is here: http://www.calnurses.org/research/pdfs/ihsp_sp_economic_study_2009.pdf
Also see the YouTube clip (5 minutes) about how to pay for healthcare reform “HR676 - The Single Payer Solution, Part 4 of 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nxi7DnCH3zk It’s about public financing and private delivery.
• We also need to INSIST THAT THE CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE ASSESS THE SINGLE PAYER PLANS (it will become quickly clear that Single Payer is the only financially viable option).
• Congress and our legislators are violating our human rights by keeping Single Payer reform off the table, and not allowing the Congressional Budget Office to compare the costs of various reform bills. See: http://www.healthcare-now.org/new-report-casts-exclusion-of-single-payer-option-as-a-question-of-democracy-and-human-rights/
A MAJORITY of Americans and physicians want Single Payer reform. Expose the corruption and greed that is preventing Single Payer from being seriously considered. Our legislators have sold out to corporate interests to the detriment of the health and lives of the rest of us, and we will work for their defeat in the upcoming election cycles.
TAKE ACTION - TAKE ACTION - TAKE ACTION - TAKE ACTION:
2. Send Letters to the Editor of your local and national Newspapers. And blog the economic facts everywhere.
3Call, Fax and Email Senator Kennedy’s office and insist that he put SINGLE-PAYER healthcare reform on the table and have Single Payer plans assessed by the Congressional Budget Office. Request that he look at the financial figures and the huge savings that would occue with Single Payer. Object to forcing all Americans to buy health insurance. Healthcare should be a right, not a business.
Email Kennedy’s office here: http://kennedy.senate.gov/senator/contact.cfm
Fax him here:
FAX Senator Kennedy's Washington office: 202-224-2417
FAX Senator Kennedy's Massachusetts office: 617-565-3183
4. ASK your Senators to support and co-sponsor S 703, The American Health Security Act.
ASK your Representatives to support and co-sponsor HR 676, The United States National Health Insurance Act. (80 Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors so far).
Let your Senators and Representatives know the bottom line:
• VOTE FOR SINGLE PAYER AND WE WILL VOTE FOR YOU.
• OPPOSE SINGLE PAYER AND WE WILL OPPOSE YOU, AND WORK FOR YOUR DEFEAT IN THE NEXT ELECTION.
You can find your legislators’ contact information here: http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml
5. Email and Fax directly AND send copies of your correspondence on this issue to:
• Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services: Email: Kathleen.Sebelius@hhs.gov
• Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House,
FAX: 202-225-4188, (202) 225-8259
Phone: 202 225-0100
Email: sf.nancy@mail.house.gov
Common Cause for Common Ground
Let's Declare
Common Ground on Health Care Reform:
The system is broken.
We need a public option.
Sign the declaration!
When faced with deep challenges like those in our current health care system, the only way to move forward is first to find the areas of common ground.
Our Representatives and Senators will be returning home from Washington in just a few short days, and they'll be looking to the American people for guidance on what to do about health care.
Won't you help us deliver a strong message that there is broad, undeniable support for a public insurance option?
Sign the Common Ground on Health Care Declaration:
http://www.commoncause.org/CommonGroundOnHealthCare.
The special interests are spending $1.4 million a day to lobby Congress, according to our latest research -- and that number is on the rise as more and more television ads hit the airwaves. Meanwhile, the health care industry is targeting millions of dollars in campaign contributions to the committee members responsible for crafting a health care reform bill.
That's why it's so important that ordinary Americans take control of decisions about our future. We have to fight back against attempts to divide us, and commit to finding common ground to move America forward.
Let's start here: Sign the Common Ground on Health Care Declaration today.
The public insurance option is favored by a supermajority of Americans, and must be at the heart of genuine health care reform. Please make your voice heard today. Sign the declaration, and we'll make sure to deliver it to your members of Congress during the August recess.
Thanks for all you do.
Sincerely,
Bob Edgar
President, Common Cause
P.S. There are reports out this morning that the Senate Finance Committee is stripping the public option from their version of the health care bill -- making it even more important that you take action now.
Blue Dogs, America Needs Your Help to Pass HR 676
In September, Congress will have the opportunity to pass legislation that will provide universal health coverage for all Americans.
I’m not talking about the White House sponsored HR 3200.  Rather, I’m referring to HR 676, also known as the United States National Health Care Act. HR 676, which provides true universal health coverage for all Americans, is based on a single-payer system and is modeled after Medicare. President Obama supported HR 676 during his campaign, but for some reason changed his mind and now wants Congress to pass HR 3200, a watered-down bill that provides many nice early Christmas presents to the insurance and pharmaceutical industry. Say it ain’t so, Mr. President, say it ain’t so!
Technically, the amendment – offered by NY Rep. Anthony Weiner – would replace the current text of HR 3200 with the text of HR 676.
It’s not going to be easy to get this done, but it’s possible.
The amendment needs 218 votes to pass. It can’t be accomplished without the votes of at least 18 of the Blue Dog Democrats, of which there are 52 in the House. Here’s who they are:
Blue Dog Leadership Team
Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (SD), Blue Dog Co-Chair for Administration
Rep. Baron Hill (IN-09), Blue Dog Co-Chair for Policy
Rep. Charlie Melancon (LA-03), Blue Dog Co-Chair for Communications
Support Rep. Weiner's single-payer amendment
5 years ago
To: Members of the U.S. House of Representatives
Started by: HEALTHCARE-NOW
For the first time ever, single-payer legislation will be debated and voted on by Congress in September.
The day after thousands of grassroots activists rallied in Washington, DC for national healthcare on Medicare's 44th birthday, Rep. Anthony Weiner (NY-9) introduced an amendment to President Obama's healthcare reform bill (HR 3200) to replace it with HR 676, the single-payer bill, and Speaker Pelosi pledged to bring it to a debate and vote on the full House floor in September.
Tell your Representatives that the Obama health plan is NOT enough and we want them to vote YES on single-payer. We need real health reform that will cover every American, provide real choice of doctors, and save the majority of Americans money.
Here's a full list of other ways you can help win single-payer healthcare this September.
The false choice debate was in high gear this week with Pelosi demanding a "public option". Then just the next day Steny Hoyer piped up and said the "public option" might have to go. Well, it is beginning to appear more and more like Steny Hoyer will have to go, and probably Pelosi as well, if we are ever going to ever have real policy reform in this country. And the first step in that direction is to keep speaking out, something that frankly NONE of those on our side are doing enough of right now.
The entire so-called debate, such as it is, is being driven by a tiny handful of loudmouths given over-sized coverage in the corporate media, from a couple lunatics disrupting town halls to right wing reactionaries with giant media megaphones, and those not on the corporate payroll are just too stupid to demand their salary. Yet and still, the only way they can possibly win is for us to NOT raise our voices and keep doing so.
We know the phone lobby resource is a new thing, and it may take a while for our participants to get used to using it, and to understand how powerful it will be. Right there at your finger tips are links to pop up the local district office phone numbers of your own members of Congress. Right there is a link to pop up a window of policy points to make on the phone. We have done everything we can to make it as easy to use as possible, just like our regular email action pages.
Speak out again, and keep speaking out. Don't let the handful of right wing loudmouths be the only voices out there. There are so many more of us on the people's side. If you just make your voice heard there is no corporate power than can prevail against us. They are depending on your silence to cheat you out of the medical care you deserve as a citizen of the United States of America. Is this the only first world country where we CAN'T put good, public policy in place? Don't let it happen, please speak out again now.
Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.
