Hi all!!
The University of California, San Diego student organization: VEG (Vegetarian Environmentalist Group) is happy to present an online petition which aims to reduce the livestock industry via means of removal of governmental subsidies for livestock farmers as well as implementation of tax for livestock products for their detrimental external social burden on the environment. Here is our petition link:

Bill Introduced to End Invasive Research on Chimpanzees!
Our promise to all the chimpanzees
we know - that we will help all those who
are still waiting in laboratories -
will be fulfilled
with passage of the Great Ape Protection Act.
Dear
Friends,
I am writing to announce very good news:
The Great Ape Protection Act was introduced today by U.S. Representatives Edolphus Towns (D-NY), David Reichert (R-WA), Jim Langevin (D-RI), and Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD.) With strong bi-partisan leadership, the bill seeks to end invasive biomedical research and testing on all great apes in U.S. laboratories and to release all federally owned great apes into permanent sanctuary.
Project R&R is working diligently with HSUS and other organizations and individuals to secure a precedent setting number of co-sponsors and a groundswell of public support for this bill, which offers the promise of protection from research to all chimpanzees now languishing in laboratories, many for more than 40 years.
Sincere thanks to all of you for your ongoing support. And thank you for remembering as we continue to ask for your help as we work toward our legislative goals.
PLEASE contact your federal legislators and urge them to join Rep. Towns, Reichert, Langevin, and Bartlett by signing onto the Great Ape Protection Act as a co-sponsor.
By taking
action and asking your family and friends to do so as well,
we will build the support essential to pass the Great Ape
Protection Act!
Sincerely,

The Great Ape Protection Act
Prohibits:
> Invasive research on great apes
> Federal funding of such research

BAN THE GAS CHAMBER AND INHUMANE TREATMENT (at Trumbull County Dog Pound)
The
dogs housed at the Trumbull County Dog Pound in Warren, Ohio are euthanized by gassing. Their screams have been heard by a volunteer while they were slowly dying. Not only do the dogs face the gas chamber, they are treated inhumanely while they are there. Dogs are forced to lay in their own waste, dogs are kenneled together and fight but not separated, injured or sick dogs are left untreated, kennels are hosed down while the dog is still present, females in season are housed with intact males, the list goes on and on.
Please sign our petition so that the dogs who are unfortunate enough to end up at this dog pound are treated humanely by the staff and if they are to be euthanized they pass on peacefully by lethal injection.

Halito {hello}..
I really didn't know where to post this, but I thought I would share this with the group, since it's good news for once.
Sending many blessings to all..and I am glad this came about, that the monkeys are going to a sanctuary. For everyones efforts..."wado" {thank you}
Much love...FreeSpiritRunning...xxxooo

Dear Shell,
I'm writing to tell you about an important victoryone that you helped bring about. Last month, a whistleblower contacted PETA to tell us that six monkeyswho were slated to be retired to a sanctuary from City University of New York's Lehman Collegehad instead been sold to New York University (NYU) for invasive neurological experiments.
Upon learning this, PETA fired off letters asking Lehman to investigate why the monkeys were sold to NYUand where their retirement fund disappeared toand asking NYU to remove the monkeys from any experiments immediately. We also asked compassionate members of the public like you to contact NYU and ask for the monkeys to be retired and sent to a sanctuary.
We are happy to report that last Friday, we received confirmation from NYU that all six monkeys will be retired to a sanctuary to spend the rest of their lives in peace. According to NYU, the monkeys were not yet involved in any experiments and Lehman is now in the process of making the proper arrangements for them to be transferred to a sanctuary.
Letters like yours helped administrators come to this decision in behalf of the monkeys who will now be retiredWanda, Holly, Jada, Sophie, Samantha, and Lilly.
Thank you for your compassion.
Sincerely,
Kathy Guillermo, Director

Dear tammy,
This year the Canadian government promised a more humane hunt. They said âCanadaâs seal hunt is humane, sustainable and responsible.â They lied.
Thanks to your support, IFAW Hunt Observers have been on the ground and in the air documenting the hunt since it opened on the 28th of March. Only days into the hunt they have captured on camera instances where animals were shot and clearly left to suffer on the iceâ¦in one case for over a minute. They have witnessed live seals being hooked and dragged across the ice. And in one of the more disturbing moments they watched as a sealer wrote an expletive on the ice while a recently clubbed seal behind him started to move...obviously still alive.
Is this the Canadian governmentâs idea of a more humane hunt?
Observing
and documenting the hunt is not easy work. It means hours of anxiously
scanning the gulf region looking for sealing boats - because the
Department of Fisheries and Oceans wonât release specific coordinates
of where hunting is taking place. It means watching hours of tape to
make sure we document every violation that we captured on film.
But without this footage the world would have no idea of the kind of
cruelty really taking place.
Please join with us in expanding the global community of activists needed to end the slaughter.
Visit the seal blog today to read the latest diaries from IFAW monitors at the hunt.
See the latest footage from the scene of the hunt and listen to IFAW
monitors describe in their own words the cruelty they are documenting
first hand.
And if you can, please consider making a donation to help in the fight to end this cruel and senseless hunt.
Of every dollar spent around the world by IFAW during the past three
years, more than 83 cents went directly to animal welfare programs and
institutional costs. Your gift enables IFAW to document the cruelty of
the seal hunt, fight for more seal product bans in Europe, conduct vital research to help save seals and works to end the exploitation of animals around the world.
The Canadian government will continue in their attempt to justify the seal hunt â both in Canada
and abroad. But no matter how the truth is distorted, it cannot change
the fact that the seal hunt is terribly cruel and unneccesary.
Your support is today is more critical than ever. Thank you for
standing with IFAW and with the seals.
Sincerely,

Make Malia Mayor Deal With Stray Animal Issues
To: Anyone willing to help
In 2003 a new law was voted in Greece not only providing animals with better protection but also requiring that Local Authorities take action in solving the stray dog and cat issues. Some of the solutions include a temporary shelter and catch-neuter-release programmes.
The Mayor of Malia, Crete however, after being approached several times not only by the Cretan Animal Welfare Group but also by the Ministry of Agriculture, said (quote) "there are no strays in Malia", and continues now he has been elected for another 4 years, to ignore the problem of stray and unwanted animals in the area.

You can also email me a letter that I will include when I send the petition off, it can be any length. This could also make a difference. Betreff: Shocking News: Irish MEP Supports Canada's Seal Slaughter
Dear ARAN Members,
We can't believe it either, but yes it's true! At a time when the world is
closing in on Canada's gruesome slaughter of seal pups and when the EU are
at a critical stage on determining whether a ban on Canadian seal products
should come into place or not we hear some bad news for the seals.
Irish MEP 'Sean O Neachtain' has been part of a delegation to the European
parliament to promote Canada's cruel seal hunt. He visited the parliament
with fisheries and governmental delegates from Canada, the very ones who
promote lies to the public and the media in order to reverse growing
opposition to the hunt in Europe. You can read more about the issue here
http://www.thewesternstar.com/index.cfm?sid=107668&sc=506&comments=submit
and we have as of this morning confirmed it's accurate.
URGENT - TAKE ACTION:
Please, email immediately your views on Canada's seal hunt and let Irish MEP
'Sean O Neachtain' know how you feel about Canada's merciless and barbaric
seal slaughter
email him at: sean.oneachtain@europarl.europa.eu
Thank you for being a true voice for animals and supporting ARAN's work,
stay tuned for details of ARAN's annual Canadian seal protest this coming
March!
Thank you,
It's true! If you are a multi-national oil company, that is. A week ago today, the Bush administration auctioned off 30 million acres of Alaska wilderness to oil and gas companies, who will now be able to get their hands on the regions estimated 15 billion barrels of oil. The going price of our land? $86.67 an acre - a little over 17 cents a barrel.
Oh, and guess what else? These 30 million acres are home to half the world's remaining polar bears.
It would be a lot harder for oil companies to wreak havoc on this wild landscape if the polar bear were protected under the Endangered Species Act - but, par for the course, the Bush administration has been dragging its heels on awarding polar bears this protected designation, missing deadline after deadline.
Will you join me in calling on Congress to stand up to the Bush administration - and demand a stop any new oil drilling in polar bear habitat?
http://www.environmental-action.org/enviroaction.asp?id=2531&id4=ES
For over two years now, environmentalists (like yours truly) have been working to protect the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act - but the Fish and Wildlife Service keeps delaying a decision. We couldn't figure out why, and then a certain 30 million acre tract of polar bear habitat hits the auction block - an area of land that would never be opened if the bear were protected.
We can't let 2008 will go down in history as the year the Bushies took every last thing they could get their hands on. Please take a minute right now, email your members of Congress, and ask them to stop any oil and gas leases in polar bear habitat.
http://www.environmental-action.org/enviroaction.asp?id=2531&id4=ES
And then forward this message along to friends and family, and ask them to take part in the effort too.
Sincerely,
Dan Stafford

Dear Tammy,
Yesterday we delivered 43,000 petitions to the White House asking that the polar bear be placed on the endangered species list immediately. This display of massive public concern will put pressure on the administration to act quickly.

Click here to help us get the message out.
You can help us change history by contributing to a TV ad that will reach over 10 million people. The ad will explain in a gripping manner that global warming is melting the Arctic and killing polar bears, and most importantly, that it's not too late. If we all band together, Congress, the administration and industry will have to start cutting greenhouse gases immediately.
We need $50,000 to produce and distribute 60-second, 30-second, and 15-second versions of the ad to television stations across the nation. Over 10 million people will be educated by the ad, and several hundred thousand will actively join the cause.
Please click here to help us place the ad.
If 2,000 supporters like you pitch in just $25 each, we'll reach our $50,000 goal and be in production within weeks.
Please help us get the message out before it's too late.

Again, efforts are underway to overturn the will of the people, who voted to ban hound hunting of mountain lions.
Hound hunting mountain lions does not fulfill any of the promises made by politicians, sport hunters or other special interest groups. What they say it will do, it won’t do!
The Mountain Lion Foundation opposes this bill for both ethical and conservation reasons.
Measures are already in place to provide for public safety and depredation. Lions perceived to be a threat to public safety or livestock are hunted and killed. Lions with any propensity for human conflict are being intensively removed from the gene pool.
Scientists agree hunting does nothing to increase public safety or decrease livestock loss. Some scientists suggest sport hunting can increase problems by culling the timid, easily treed lions from the population.

I, the undersigned, am concerned about the plight of Russian brown bears. Wealthy hunters wake the bears from hibernation to shoot them for sport and hundreds of cubs just a few weeks old are left motherless with little or no chance for survival.
This is a cruel practice that must be stopped. I urge the Russian government to ban this hunt and save the Russian brown bears and their cubs.

A former employee of the public dogpound in Tulcea
said the animals were brutally killed a few days ago,
and the bodies were carried by truck to unknown
destinations.
The head of the department of city hall in charge of
the dogpound couldn’t be contacted.
People of Somova-Tulcea shook with horror finding out
in forest tens of plastic bags with dead dogs. The
village people say the animals were brought from the
city, Tulcea, and left there.
People’s suspicions are confirmed by a former employee
of the public dogpound in Tulcea.
He says that 2 weeks ago the dogpound was closed, due
to poor conditions in which the animals were kept. In
dogpound there were 200 dogs of which the employees
got rid of in the cruellest possible way.
Even though the mayor of Somova, the village where the
dogs were dumped, informed the Guard for Environment
and the Sanitary – Veterinarian Direction, no
inspector of these institutions has got to the site.
Now there are still 20 dogs in the dogpound.
Video footage obtained in a new PETA undercover investigation reveals horrific nightmare conditions for small animals and birds bred and brokered by a major supplier to PetSmart.
Investigation Reveals Horrors at PetSmart Supplier
Other viewing options
In addition to the ever-present misery caused by extremely crowded cages, filthy conditions, a lack of basic enrichment, an often inadequate food and water supply, and excessive noise, PETA's investigation of a massive breeding mill and one of PetSmart's main animal suppliers, Rainbow World Exotics in Hamilton, Texas, also revealed that live animals were thrown into the trash, were deprived of desperately needed veterinary care, were suffering and dying alone in their cages, and were cannibalizing each other; that rabbits underwent crude neuter surgeries at the hands of a layperson in a filthy, dark room; and more. Click here to read the details.
See where PetSmart's animal victims are bred. View the video footage and photos taken by PETA's undercover investigator.
Unsuspecting PetSmart customers have reported buying unsocialized, sick, and injured animals, including guinea pigs with eye and upper respiratory infections, hamsters with deadly diseases, sick and dying betta fish, and suffering birds. As PETA's investigator documented at this breeding mill, overcrowding, lack of veterinary care, and lack of socialization are the norm, not the exception, for the tens of thousands of animals at Rainbow. Click here to read more about what the investigator found.
PetSmart's trade in live animals supports this mass-breeding industry that is just as cruel as—and even less regulated than—the puppy mill industry. It results in abysmal treatment of tiny, vulnerable beings, and it ultimately leads to their overpopulation, homelessness, neglect, and suffering.
Take action: Complete the form below to urge PetSmart to cut ties with Rainbow World Exotics and to stop selling all live animals.

This Friday, February 1st, the Los Angeles City Council will vote on what would be the most ambitious spay and neuter ordinance in the nation. Last year, more than 15,000 cats and dogs were killed in the City of Los Angeles' animal shelters. Spaying and neutering animals before they reproduce is the most effective way to reduce euthanasia rates in shelters. Please Take Action to urge Los Angeles City Council members to pass the spay/neuter ordinance and send it to the Mayor's desk immediately to be signed into law.
Tell USDA: Stop Allowing the Torture of Downed Cows to Feed Our Schoolchildren
Dear Joanna,
Dragging
cows too weak to stand. Shocking them with electric prods when they
can't walk. Ramming them with forklifts. Even forcing water down their
throats -- right out of the manual on waterboarding.
Our shocking undercover investigation revealed these and other abuses of "downed" dairy cows -- those who are too sick or injured to walk -- at a Southern California slaughter plant. And The Humane Society of the United States’ investigation also discovered that the meat from these tortured animals gets fed to children through the National School Lunch Program! Please watch our investigative video, and then take action today to stop this cruelty.
Our video of the cruelty is very difficult to watch. Even worse is the thought that an outfit like Hallmark Meat Packing Company got away with this kind of abuse every day, without proper oversight from the USDA.
Urge the USDA to tighten its lax enforcement of the downer rule and to close the rule's loophole -- so that cows who are obviously in no shape to walk are not taken to slaughter in the first place.
Don't forget to tell your friends and family how they can help, too.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
Sincerely,
Wayne Pacelle

WARNING ON THIS PETITION: READ BEFORE YOU SIGN!!
Nadia D. left a comment on the following article:
My fellow Americans, over the past few years more and more of our rights as pet owners have been taken away. Unjust laws that penalize us, breed specific legislation that tells us what breeds we can and can not own, sky rocketing licensing fee's if we
Comment:
I'm just confused with this petition... someone enlighten me please. I fight long and hard for puppy mills to be closed and promote adoption in shelters. I don't agree with breeding while 60,000 perfectly adoptable animals are killed in shelters EVERYDAY. This petition text has me confused:
"sky rocketing licensing fee's if we want to keep breeding animals and the animal rights activist groups who are pushing for "no pets" at all. I'm sure if your life is enriched by an animal you will want to help. The animal rights groups are well organized and speak with one big voice. We far out number them, but we are not acting as one force."
While the law is limited, I do believe that breeders need to pay fees ('sky rocketing' is relative) if they want to bring more companion animals in this world. The last part as well seems it's an "us" against animal rights groups.... I hope I'm reading this wrong. I dont know of a group that's advocating for "No pets at all" including PeTA, contrary to CCF's propaganda though they maybe against breeding pits completely. But that's another discussion entirely and wish to not extend that here. This is about this specific petition and with this text, unfortunately I can not support or promote. I did note it to encourage more discussion as I may be reading this wrong...
Also, where are the signatures going? The target says, "To united pet owners as a single voice."
The horrific death of this poor puppy touched animal lovers around the world, and the strong sentencing in this case highlights how strongly the public feels about cruelty toward animals.
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard felt so strongly about seeking justice in this case – describing the death of this puppy as "so egregious it cries out for special attention" - that he sent a letter to Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue requesting that the penalty for animal cruelty be raised above the current five year maximum.
DA Howard should be applauded for his commitment to justice and the humane treatment of animals – please sign this petition today to congratulate him on success in this case!

Tell Your Representative to Put Polar Bears First
We’ve got to stop the Bush Administration from rushing through the sale of oil and gas drilling leases in Alaska’s prime polar bear habitat -- before it makes a final decision about protecting these imperiled bears under the Endangered Species Act.
Sign the message below and tell your Representative to support the Markey bill (H.R. 5058) that will reverse these new oil and gas lease sales for the sake of polar bear survival.

Serious Update!!
This is pretty simple... Please tell ten friends to tell ten more today!
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.
It takes less than a minute (How about 20 seconds) to go to their site
and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals' for free. This doesn't cost you a thing.
Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

SAVE LOLITA!!
http://www.petitiononline.com/25021987/
To: Miami Seaquarium
I have created this petition to help get a well-deserved bigger tank for a Killer Whale. She is called Lolita and lives at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami Florida.
She was first captured when she was 2 years old and taken from her family. She is now over 30 years old and has spent the whole of her life in this small tank.
Her only form of company when she is not performing is a blow up rubber whale that floats with her in her tank. The park owner Mr Hertz has been promising for over 25 years to build her a new tank. But this has not materialized. Her tank is by law not within the government guidelines for housing killer whales, but yet nothing has been done about this.
Please sign this petition to help get Lolita the life she needs. I think she deserves it after 30 years of performing for audiences.
Thank you
