PITTSBURGH ~ LCA Investigator Reported Horrible Suffering at Tiger Ranch ~ Authorization for Inspection Abruptly Withdrawn

“I was working for Last Chance for Animals when the initial complaints about Tiger Ranch came in to the office. I was assigned to conduct a preliminary investigation, which I did.

“I concluded that there was evidence of horrible suffering at Tiger Ranch, and requested authorization to conduct a more thorough investigation. My request was approved but then abruptly withdrawn. I’ve never fully understood why LCA pulled me off of that investigation.

“After I left LCA, I continued to look into Tiger Ranch and became more and more convinced that the allegations were valid. As a 20-year veteran of the animal rights movement, including a decade as an undercover investigator, I remain convinced that Tiger Ranch deserved to be closed and investigated for animal cruelty. I believe that our mission as animal advocates is to prevent and alleviate suffering wherever it occurs, even when the suffering is created by those who may be trying to do good things for animals.

“I do not believe that good intentions absolve us of the consequences of our actions. That applies both to Tiger Ranch and the people who dumped cats there without fully investigating their likely fate.”

Mike Winikoff, former Animal Cruelty Investigator, Last Chance for Animals (LCA)

Saving Endangered Wild Places - BioGems News
Help Protect Patagonia's Wild Rivers

In a groundbreaking meeting with President Michelle Bachelet of Chile on March 31st, NRDC attorney Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. expressed our willingness to work with her government to build a sustainable energy future for her country. During that and other high-level discussions, which also included Chile's Minister of Energy and leading members of Parliament, Kennedy voiced concerns over a destructive proposal to put massive hydroelectric dams and a 1,400-mile transmission line through Chile's pristine Patagonia region. BioGems Defenders have sent nearly 190,000 messages to President Bachelet and other Chilean government officials, as well as to the proposal's corporate backers, urging them to cancel the scheme. If allowed to move forward, the hydroelectric development would destroy critical habitat for a South American deer called the huemel and other rare wildlife. Please join us in encouraging President Bachelet to explore environmentally sound alternatives, including solar and geothermal energy.

» Thank President Bachelet for her openness to energy alternatives for Chile.

NewsYELLOWSTONE: NO SAFE HAVEN FOR BUFFALO
For years, BioGems Defenders have fought to halt the U.S. government's systematic capture and killing of Yellowstone's bison -- better known as American buffalo -- as they roam beyond the boundaries of the park in search of food during the harsh winter months. But this year the rate of slaughter has reached unprecedented proportions with more than 1,400 buffalo dead -- fully 30 percent of the buffalo population. In response, the NRDC Action Fund, our partner organization, is mobilizing a massive outcry to stop the killing.

» Tell the National Park Service to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone's wild buffalo.

BUSH ADMINISTRATION TARGETS ALASKAN RAINFOREST
The Bush administration has announced a plan to open up millions of pristine acres in the Tongass rainforest -- America's largest national forest -- to the timber industry. The 17-million-acre Tongass, an awe-inspiring landscape of ice-capped peaks, glacial fjords, fog-shrouded islands and towering groves of old-growth spruce and hemlock, is home to our nation's biggest populations of salmon, grizzly bears and bald eagles. BioGems Defenders have already protested the administration's efforts to expand logging into unroaded backcountry areas of Colorado and Idaho, and we will be calling on you soon to help protect Alaska's Tongass from a similar assault.

NRDC WINS ANOTHER ROUND FOR WHALES
A federal appeals court has rejected the White House's unprecedented effort to exempt the U.S. Navy from federal environmental laws during training with dangerous mid-frequency sonar off the Southern California coast. The three-judge panel upheld a lower court order -- won by NRDC in January -- requiring the Navy to put safeguards in place that would protect whales and other marine mammals from needless injury and death. PITTSBURGH ~ “As the 3-day-old gray kitten cried softly for food, a volunteer swaddled him in a towel and fed him formula from a dropper.”

As the 3-day-old gray kitten cried softly for food, a volunteer swaddled him in a towel and fed him formula from a dropper. The newborn is among about 350 sick and neglected cats removed in a raid from a suburban Pittsburgh animal sanctuary. Veterinarians and volunteers have been working around the clock since Thursday to nurse them back to health.

Dozens of other cats have either died, like the gray kitten’s mother, or had to be euthanized.

The cats can’t be adopted yet, in part because they are considered evidence in the case against the owner of the animal sanctuary.

Howard Nelson, director of the Pennsylvania SPCA, said the raid also uncovered burial pits containing perhaps thousands of cats, Nelson said. About 100 dead cats were found in freezers.

Tiger Ranch Stuns Vet: “I never saw—in 17 years of my practice—conditions like this.... The cats were so infected, eyeballs were falling into my hands.... Mucal discharge was covering half of their faces... They had ulcerations all through their mouths.”

A veterinarian talked in graphic detail about the many ill cats he saw during a raid of the Tiger Ranch, as the preliminary hearing for Linda Bruno continued for a second day downtown.

“I never saw—in 17 years of my practice—conditions like this,” Dr. Ravindra Murarka, of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, testified on Tuesday. “Most of the cats’ noses were blocked. They couldn’t even breathe. The mucal discharge was covering half of their faces. They couldn’t open their eyes. They had ulcerations all through their mouths. They couldn’t eat, couldn’t drink.”

Authorities said they found hundreds of sick and dead cats at Bruno’s cat sanctuary in Frazer Township on March 13. Bruno is charged with 203 misdemeanor counts and 371 summary counts of cruelty to animals.

Murarka was among the doctors who checked out the cats that were removed during the raid. Pictures of each animal were shown in the courtroom.

“While I was examining the cats, they were so infected, eyeballs were falling into my hands,” Murarka said.

On Monday, prosecutors played audio and video recordings of officers telling Bruno that conditions on the ranch were filthy.

Allegheny County Sheriff’s Detective Richard Manning described the building and properties on it as having “an odor I can’t re-create in words.”

Manning testified that the walls and floors were covered in animal waste and that it was hard for him to contain himself in order to do his job.

“I saw hundreds of cats in different buildings, running loose on the property, running loose in the buildings,” Manning said. “The majority of the cats appeared to be lethargic. They looked in very bad shape. Most were sneezing. Some were disfigured, missing patches of fur, missing eyes.”

A PSPCA officer who was at the scene said most of the cats were “sickly.” He went on to say the cats were “thin” and had an “oily” coat of fur.

The humane agent told the judge that records show that in 2008, more than 700 cats were brought to the ranch and only nine had been adopted.

“One agent told FOX-TV29, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the worst he’s seen, well, he says this case is definitely 9 or 9-1/2.

“ ‘The backyard of this property was quite horrendous. These animals were living in wire cages, with no food or water, the cages had not been cleaned. They were loaded with feces. Mud. It was just a horrendous mess.’

“The puppies and their parents were found in the backyard of this house, covered with mud and feces, forced to sleep in metal cages without food or water. It’s what was done to these puppies that’s most disturbing. Their tiny tails were amputated without any antiseptic.

“The first priority right now is just the health of those puppies. They are in really, really bad shape. It just breaks your heart.”—Tasha Jamerson, Hunting Park, Philadelphia, FOX-TV29.

Authorities have discovered an alleged puppy mill in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia.

The apparent mistreatment of dogs includes airedale terrier puppies appearing to have their tails docked or amputated without pain medication or antibiotics.

“These puppies are really in horrible condition. They have gangrene on their tails and all their tails are badly infected,” veterinarian Ravi Murarka said.

However, there are dogs in worse condition. PSPCA investigators found more than a dozen dogs inside a home on the 71 hundred block of Boyer Street in Mt. Airy.

One puppy was dead in a trashcan. Investigators say conditions inside and outside the home are deplorable.

“It's like a junkyard back there with leaves and dirt in it,” PSPCA investigator Wayne Smith said.

Investigators say David Pippen ran the puppy mill. A woman and a young man who identified themselves as Pippen's wife and son talked to investigators outside the home, but they refused to answer questions from Action News.

SHIPPENVILLE PA ~ Clarion Co. Shelter Vandalized ~ Brick Hurled Through Window at TIGER RANCH Raid Cats ~ No Animals Harmed

The makeshift shelter in Clarion County that is housing nearly 300 sick cats taken from Tiger Ranch in Frazer was vandalized Monday morning.

According to Howard Nelson, chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania branch of the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, a brick was thrown through the shelter window in Shippenville. “Fortunately, no person or animal was harmed,” he said. “Terroristic acts by a group of misinformed zealots will not deter the PSPCA’s mission to help these cats.”

The surviving 278 cats continue to receive extensive veterinary care. Currently, 75 cats are in critical condition.

Puppy Mill Story to Air
on the Oprah Show -- Friday, April 4
maal logo

On Friday, April 4, 2008, the Oprah Show will be airing a show on puppy mills. Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, is the featured guest.  Although the Alliance has not previewed the show, it is our understanding that an in-depth report of puppy mills and other animal welfare issues will be discussed.  Please check your local paper for the time of the show.

What you can do to help.

Contact your local television station and newspaper and encourage them to do a follow-up show on Missouri's puppy mills.    As you are aware, the Alliance was instrumental in passing the Animal Care Facilities Act in 1992 which requires the inspection and licensing of commercial pet breeders, pet stores kennels and animal shelters.   Encourage the local media to contact the Alliance and speak with executive director, Julie Leicht, to discuss puppy mills in Missouri.  Contact number: (314) 361-3944.

Support the businesses that advertise on the Oprah Show.  Let the businesses know why you are supporting them.  By patronizing these establishments, you are showing them you appreciate their concern over animal welfare issues.

Call ten friends and family and ask them to watch the show.  Better yet, tape the show and share it with friends, family and co-workers.

Thank Oprah.  Send Oprah an e-mail thanking her for her interest in animal welfare issues and her commitment to expose this horrific industry.

By joining together to give a voice to the animals, we can put an end to puppy mills in Missouri.

BANGKOK, Thailand - The critically endangered Sumatran tiger will become extinct unless Indonesia takes swift action to clamp down on the illegal sale of the big cats' body parts across the Southeast Asian country, conservationists say.

TRAFFIC, a British-based international wildlife trade monitoring network, said it found tiger bones, claws, skins and whiskers being sold openly in eight cities on Indonesia's Sumatra island in 2006, despite tough laws banning such trade.

The group estimated that 23 tigers had been killed to supply the parts found for sale in souvenir, Chinese medicine and jewelry stores. Prices ranged from the equivalent of $14 for a tiger claw to about $52.50 per pound of tiger bones.

"Surveys continue to show that Sumatran tigers are being sold body part by body part into extinction," said a statement issued by Susan Lieberman, director of the species program for the conservation group WWF, which contributed to the report.

The Sumatran tiger, or Panthera tigris sumatrae, is the world's most critically endangered tiger subspecies — WWF estimates fewer than 400 remain in the wild in comparison to about 1,000 in the 1970s. The tigers' diminishing population is largely blamed on poaching and the destruction of their forest habitat for palm oil and wood pulp plantations.

"This is an enforcement crisis," Lieberman's statement said, adding that Indonesia needs to demonstrate it can cope with the crisis or ask for help from the international community.

Indonesia launched a 10-year plan to protect the Sumatran tiger in December last year. But conservationists complain that Indonesian commitments to preserving wildlife are rarely supported by enforcement measures.

"There is no effective enforcement on the ground," said Chris Shepherd, senior program officer for TRAFFIC, who has been tracking the Indonesian tiger trade for nearly 15 years. "It boils down to lack of resources. Wildlife crime isn't viewed as a high priority in Indonesia or anywhere in Southeast Asia."

Tonny Soehartono, the country's director for biodiversity conservation in the Ministry of Forestry, said efforts were being made to crack down on the illegal wildlife trade. He did not elaborate.

"I believe we have made significant progress," he said.

Body Part by Body Part, Sumatran Tigers Are Being Sold into Extinction

WASHINGTON Laws protecting the critically endangered Sumatran Tiger have failed to prevent tiger body parts being openly sold in Indonesia, according to a TRAFFIC report launched today.

Tiger body parts—including canine teeth, claws, skin pieces, whiskers and bones—were on sale in 10 percent of the 326 retail outlets surveyed during 2006 in 28 cities and towns across Sumatra. Outlets included goldsmiths, souvenir and traditional Chinese medicine shops, and shops selling antique and precious stones.

The survey conservatively estimates that 23 tigers were killed to supply the products seen based on the number of canine teeth on sale.

“This is down from an estimate of 52 killed per year in 1999–2000,” said Julia Ng, program officer with TRAFFIC Southeast Asia and lead author on The Tiger Trade Revisited in Sumatra, Indonesia. “Sadly, the decline in availability appears to be due to the dwindling number of tigers left in the wild.”

All of TRAFFIC’s surveys have indicated that Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province, and Pancur Batu, a smaller town situated about nine miles away, are the main hubs for the trade of tiger parts.

Despite TRAFFIC providing authorities with details of traders involved it is not clear whether any serious enforcement action has been taken, apart from awareness-raising activities.

“Because of poor enforcement the Sumatran tiger is slipping through our fingers,” said Leigh Henry, program officer for TRAFFIC North America. “There are only about 400 Sumatran tigers left and such a small population can’t sustain this level of poaching.  If enforcement and political will are not bolstered the Sumatran tiger will be wiped out just as the Javan and Bali tigers were.”

The report recommends that resources and efforts should concentrate on effective enforcement to combat the trade by arresting dealers and suppliers. Trade hotspots should be continually monitored and all intelligence be passed to the enforcement authorities for action. Those found guilty of trading in tigers and other protected wildlife should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

“We have to deal with the trade. Currently we are facing many other crucial problems which, unfortunately, are causing the decline of Sumatran tiger populations,” explained Dr. Tonny Soehartono, director for biodiversity conservation, Ministry of Forestry of Republic of Indonesia. “We have been struggling with the issues of land use changes, habitat fragmentation, human–tiger conflicts and poverty in Sumatra. Land use changes and habitat fragmentation are driving the tiger closer to humans and thus creating human–tiger conflicts.”

As a recent show of commitment, the President of the Republic of Indonesia launched the Conservation Strategy and Action Plan of Sumatran Tiger 20072017 during the 2007 Climate Change Convention in Bali.

Using Natural Flea Control to Help Your Pet
While feeding small amounts of fresh garlic and brewer's yeast to the pet have not been shown in controlled studies to be effective, many pet owners swear by their use and continue to add them to the diet to aid in parasite control.
Sure, it can help to feed garlic and yeast to dogs and cats. This gives them some extra B vitamins and makes them not so tasty to the flea. The only caution is that you not depend on this as your sole means of controlling fleas.
Fleas can cause a number of health problems for your pet, but one of the bigger one is related to allergies. The technical name is dermatitis, but essentially it involves hypersensitivity to flea bites. Some pets simply are allergic to the chemical
