Introductions August 17, 2004 4:02 PM

Hello! Welcome to Back to the village. Please share your daydreams of the beautiful paradises that come to your soul. Where can you picture yourself? Do you wish for another life? I long for a place where I can enjoy a slower and more meaningful pace in my life. Where the people are warm, and I know the people in my community. Where I am the bread maker. Have you found such a place? Have you lived here? Have you travelled here? Please share your dreams...  [ send green star]

Dream August 19, 2004 4:05 AM

every day morning, when I start driving to my office, I ask my self, shall I go to the left or right side of the street, as on the lift side is the way to the Village..most of the time, I take the right side.. not coz I love to, but coz I have to.. I hate all the civilian life now, there is no care about you.. every one in the morning is angry.. you dont know why.. even if you look from your office window, what u will see? more buildings and more angry people, we lost the smile in the middel of our working life.. but in the village, every one love to say good morning for you, or offer you any help you need.. you can smell the life.. not only see it.. yes I wish to go back to the Village  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

let's bring the village life to the city August 19, 2004 7:31 AM

There is no reason for us to not bring joy, kindness, and thoughtfulness to our everyday lives. Whether it is really listening or paying attention to someone, doing something thoughtful like offering to go pickup a coffee for someone, or to just verbalize that you care about a person. Thank you for your post Mohammad.  [ send green star]

anonymous Hello August 23, 2004 4:47 PM

I just felt the need to write something... here goes. For me, the magic of travel is that you leave home secure in your own knowledge and identity, but as you travel, the world in all its richness intervenes. You meet people you could not invent; you see scenes you could not imagine. Your own world, which was so large as to consume your whole life diminishes... you return a different person. Travel doesn't have to be to some dreamlike and foreign destination. It can take you on an evening stroll through a distant forest or to a park bench in a town just a few miles away from your home. What matters is that you have left the comfort of the familiar and opened yourself to a world that is totally apart from your own. If we don't offer ourselves to the unknown (sometimes), our senses dull. Our world becomes small and we lose our sense of wonder. The edge is off out experience and we pass our days in a routine that is both comfortable and limiting. We wake up one day to find we have lost our dreams in order to protect our days. I do have my special 'place' in the world (it's on South Island, New Zealand). I don't think I will ever see it again and, sometimes, I feel that maybe I could have found the same sense of 'speciality' or 'ideality' closer to home. However, the beauty and tranquility of the place is burnt into my memory... it is mine to keep. When I am old and weak, my memories will be waiting for me. They will lift me over mountains and oceans. I will hold them and turn them and watch them catch the sunlight as they come alive once more in my imagination. And I will be happy and at peace. Thank you Heidi August 26, 2004 3:18 PM

Thanks for giving me a chance to start dreamtime again. I have grown old and haggard but like you I so want to return to those simpler times. Breadmaking-oh that wonderful smell and the fresh veggies from our own gardens. Can I buy some dream property and go back to the Village too. I'd love it!!! They don't deliver mail, you have to go get it. No noisy smelly cars? The neighborhood is getting good girl!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

anonymous would love to go back. August 27, 2004 4:42 PM

Hi there! I'm Alli, live in Portland, OR currently. For a while, though, I lived on the Washington coast in a very small town. We had one traffic light that blinked yellow and was turned off in the winter. After all the summer tourists had left, us "full timers" would gather in a favorite bar, overlooking a gorgeous bay. There were old salts, and artists, and curmugeons and retirees and people hiding from who knows what. When the winter gales (80 mph!) made the windows bow in and the lights go out, we would oo and ah and chat about that really bad winter or the even worse winds and rain that had logs floating in the parking lot. It really was a place where every one knew your name! Of course, this has drawbacks. Everyone knew everyone else's business, good or bad. The gossip factor was pretty high, who was running around with who, and "guess who I saw in so and so's truck!" But it was the most creative time of my life, and I'll always have very fond memories of that tiny village. Thanks for letting me wonder down a soggy memory lane!  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Hi all, I live in Windsor, Ontario Canada and I used to live on the west side (known as Sandwich Towne). It was very much a village atmosphere. I worked and lived there and saw many of the same people everyday. It was nice. Just thought I'd share.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Greetings! I live in Richmond California, just across the bay from San Francisco. I'm married and have two daughters, 23 and 19. Though we live in a metro area, there's plenty of greenspace and parkland withing driving (or in our case walking) distance. Next week my wife Lynn and I are leaving for Yellowstone. It will be our first road trip in years. The girls are staying behind as they have jobs and college. So for the first time in a long while we will be on our own. We plan to camp out whenever possible. (Except in Las Vegas where we plan to see some shows!) I was originally born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley of Central California. I suppose I'm a farm boy at heart. I teach herbalism, lecture, write, and try to be as good a person as I can. I guess that covers it. Chuck G.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Inner city livin with a small town heart September 27, 2004 12:14 PM

Yep I can relate to this. I've been living in major cities across north america for the last 12 years but am originaly from very small town in england called Taplow. Went to a real small school where the headmaster and mistress actually lived, everybody walked to school including the teachers. But as time passes by I'm wanting to return to that small town enviroment. Would like to start an organic farm outside Ottawa possibly Shawville thats a dream of mine for when I finish school. Alot of my city friends are in agreement. As for bringing small town heart to your city, great idea. You could organize multi-cultural events food and music always works well for bring peeps together or start community gardens to donate money to food banks. Or as previously stated simple things like smiling and saying hello.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Dear Heidi October 10, 2004 4:57 AM

India has many Villages, scattered in different parts of the Country. The traditions and life varies very much for example, a Village in Northern India to a Village in Western India. The food, clothing, festivals, beliefs vary considerably. Even the occupation, vocation of the people vary from place to place, village to village, in India.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

The Dream October 22, 2004 1:15 AM

My village life will probably be in Ontario, Canada, and I am actively planning for it.  Years ago I was so into self-sufficiency (while I worked away in the big city, dreaming, dreaming) and read all of John Seymour's books, along with many others, and longed for the time when I could try my version of it.  I realise as I get older that things won't be quite so sublime as I pictured them, (I don't think I could deal with a dry-chemical toilet, for instance) but I will do my darndest to get close to that dream.

I'm in Australia now, and have decided this country is a bit too harsh for that dream (especially real-estate prices!) so will head back to Canada in a couple of years.

My idea is to find a place where I can have as many animals as I can do justice to, a sanctuary perhaps, and grow as much of my own produce as possible.  I would like to run a little craft/art gallery out of my house so local artists could display and sell their work.  As an artist, I know how hard it is to be recognized, let alone sell anything.  I would have a little library, where people could come and chat, browse and borrow, and I would have a teashop attached, for more chat, and where I could sell my extra bits of produce, homemade baked goods, my own arty things. I would need help from the village, of course, because this would require more hands than I have.  And that would help the little village economy and we all would benefit.

The village would become my family, with get-togethers, celebrations of the seasons, willing hands to help one another with our various tasks -  snow clearing, child-minding, problem-solving, grief-sharing.

The vision is so clear in my mind that I am certain it will happen, perhaps not quite as I've outlined, but close.  Nothing can ever be perfect, and how boring that would be if it was.

Here is a new member August 10, 2005 7:27 AM

I have lived in many places.  I grew up in a town of 2000 people in Massachusetts.  I have lived in villages in Africa, visited small towns in Italy, stayed in intentional communities, including communes, ecovillages, co-houses, and the like.

I like communities with different levels of familiarity.  I would like a place where I can walk or bike.  Long commutes are out.  Never having to eat a meal alone.  Finding conversation at a moments notice.  Working along side friends and the "intentional family" to support the community.

This is just a dream.  Life and the decisions I have in it (for better or worse) require that I live in the world and repay my debts to society.  My conscience requires it.  Where can those two worlds meet harmoniously?

Natural paradise October 08, 2005 10:54 PM

Hello! My name is Lark and I live in Huntsville, Alabama. I have often thought about my perfect village, where I would love to spend the rest of my life. Michael O.'s description sounds a lot like my paradise, with the beauty of nature all around. I would love to live in the mountains-like the Rockies-near enough to my village to walk, even in the winter. Everyone would know everyone else and all would work together to create a place where people are safe and all feel needed and appreciated. I would love to make a living writing and painting-or perhaps sculpting-but, like everyone else in my village, I would do my part in the garden, kitchen or wherever else my skill or strength was needed. My village would be made up of people who are tolerant of others' opinions, and are willing to listen and support each other.

This place sounds like Shangri-La, doesn't it? But I bet it's not really an impossible dream. At least I hope not because I intend to keep looking for it!

Peace everyone!   Lark

Hi Lark! October 11, 2005 3:08 AM

Welcome to the village!

I am making my own retreat in my apartment so that I can paint, write, compose, and do yoga & pilates. It's the best that I can do in the city!

What I would really love, is to own some land. I am so afraid that there will be no more forests, clean water, clean air, animals roaming free, etc. Where are we going to keep all the people in the world (to the moon!)?

I have lived in many places as I am an old army brat and ex army wife. But now I am glad to be in my small village.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi Diane!

The ocean sounds really nice! Do you watch from a beach or cliff?

I remember looking at the ocean on the coast of England. One of the places seemed so dirty... the waterfront was completely built up, and the village catered to tourists. Other areas were more beautiful. I especially loved the view from the cliffs.

dream of a place to be June 29, 2006 12:37 PM

I dream of a place where there is no violence, no hate, and where everyone is respectful and kind to other people and animals. It all begins with humility because you realize our time on earth is short and we must , in each moment,  do right by others - whether it is treating strangers with respect or treating your family and loved ones with special regard. While we all dream of  utopia, it is where you are in your heart that is most important.

Introductions... August 01, 2006 1:50 PM

Hello All,

My name is Roland.  I have just now joined and would simply like to introduce myself to everyone.  (Besides, how do you follow an act like Anthony [just above]?--he pretty much said it all.)  Just a bit of personal history:  I grew up on a farm/ranch in southwestern North Dakota.  Left almost immediately after high school, have lived in cities (mostly Salt Lake City, Utah) for the past 30 years or so.  Have recently (March, '06) moved back 'home.'  Interesting experience... highly interesting experience.  But that is a topic for another volume.  I'm very much interested in the thoughts and experiences of others who either do now, have, or would like to live in a 'village.'  Looking forward to getting to know you all.  Thanks.

And as you are a co-host of another group I just finished writing a long-winded application to, you just might be lucky (Not) enough to read that bit of scintillating prose as well.  This could be your... how to put it?... 'interesting' day!  But w/r/t This Group, thanks for your kind welcome to the Group.  Take care,  Roland J.

Hi Everyone From Rural Texas August 14, 2006 8:40 AM

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this group...nice to know there are others out there like me. : )
I live in a small Texas farming/ranching community. The closest store (of any kind) is 15 miles away. My closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away. I truly enjoy the peaceful days and quiet nights out here. I work in a major city and commute 100 miles each day. I'm in the process of trying to find another job closer to home. I always feel a wave of relaxation when I make that turn down my gravel road. The people out here are real gems. Sure we have a few trouble-makers, but the there are more really nice and kind people out here. If you need help, just call. If you just want to talk, come on over. If you're not sure how to handle a ranch problem, just ask. And even though most of the folks out here are true ranchers, they really do care about their animals and wildlife. One ol' timer and I even had a conversation about how to cross-fence a lot and not cut down any trees. There's a small church down the road, about 5 miles. Even though I don't attend, the people are eager to share upcoming "community" events with everyone...no pressure or disapproving looks.  What a nice change. We watch out for each other and care about each other. I wish I could bottle this neighborly spirit up and give it to everyone in the big cities....what a difference that would make. ~*~

Hi, I have a desire, call it a dream and that is to go back to the country town I was brought up in.  I think to  go over to certain places etc.  Yes, to slow down from the pace of life one is in.  I am 64 years old and have slowed down anyways.  But living in a small country town or village is what I look forward to.

My Dream

Your Villages all sound wonderful. Mine is by the ocean, views from all sides nothing around for miles. The simplicicity of life encaptulates me, it feels warm and safe. I take a 5 mile ride on my bike into town for provisions. I sit, and sip tea with the locals at the only cafe in town, everyone of them more interesting then the next. Hours go by which seems like only minutes. Riding back home the sun is disappearing and the cold night air is setting in. I carefully unpack my shopping then set about making a fire. I fumble up the stairs with a few logs and soon I have a roaring fire heating my little house. I throw on a pair of warm socks, slippers and an oversized jumper and scarf. I make my way outside to the verandah grabbing a blanket as I go. I settle onto the outside lounge rugging myself up in the blanket, wriggling, till i am nice and comfy. With little light left i watch the small waves break over the shore. The cold breeze on my face telling me i am alive, and full of life. I hear the front door open, it is my love home from the City. I call out to him "I am on the verandah I am comming in". I see his face weary and tired. I make hot chocolate to warm him as he removes his clothes and replaces them with a warm fleecy tracksuit and socks. He slumps infront of the fire his body relaxes and he looks over at me with a smile. I soon remember why we left the city.

Invitation to anonymous May 09, 2008 8:43 PM

Hi. I live in the southern part of New Zealand and would welcome anonymous for a visit so you can see your dream place again. I agree its a beautiful area and I would be living in wonderland if I had my own little cottage where me and my dogs could play all day. Thats my dream
