I recently visited my in-law a couple of weekends ago. While there, my mother-in-law decided she would show me her latest toy, Wii Fit. Knowing that I do yoga, she was eager for me to attempt to do yoga with her Wii Fit.
As I stepped on the balance board, I knew I was about to make a fool of myself and I had an audience who were only to eager to point out how foolish I looked.
I chose Tree Pose. This is my favorite pose and I can do it with ease, but I had a hard time balancing on the balance board. I tried to listen and pay attention to the dot on my virtual instructor because the point of doing this was to keep the red dot in the yellow circle. I wobbled all over the place. Embarrassed I put my leg down and switched to the next. This time I decided to focus on on a point on the wall. I breathed and relaxed in the pose as if I were in my own home practicing yoga. I no longer wobbled but the Wii Fit said my center dot was all over the place.
I stepped off the balance board and saw the smug look on my mother-in-law's face. She and I do not get along very well, so I knew this was an enjoyable moment for her. Instead of letting it get to me, I made a mental note to myself, I thought I would write to you, my yogi friends, and ask you what you think about Wii Fit and the balance board.
To me, yoga is not a game. I don't think I could ever truly practice yoga with Wii Fit. But there are those who may have a different exprience.
So, what has been your exprience with Wii Fit Yoga? What do you think about this "game?"

I've tried the Wii Fit yoga, and that's just what it is: a game.
The breathing exercise is a helpful one - practicing deep breathing and paying attention to your breath. But I don't see what balancing and keeping a red dot in the middle of a yellow circle can do to help someone with yoga. Yes, it is an interesting introduction to yoga, but it's more about balance and getting scored than it is anything else.
For some people, it may help them strengthen the muscles needed to hold tree pose, or improve their balance. And maybe some people will decide to try a local yoga class after doing these poses for a while. But anyone who has a regular yoga practice will find the 'sun salutation' very short and modified, and question the safety of doing some poses without a yoga teacher to make sure the alignment is right.
If you do it as a game, have fun with it.

On the moving red dot: I honestly don't think it's possible to stand in a balance pose without your muscles adjusting, readjusting and moving to keep you upright. Maybe there will be less movement the more you practice balancing, but I highly doubt the dot will ever stay completely still.

I think this is a very fun was to get a little bit of practice in each day. I tried the tree pose too! I tried this at my grandmother's you see...The score systems definatly add a sense of achievement, even though being able to stretch that little bit more after a session without the wii is very rewarding. The dot will never stay completely still- but i managed to keep it inside the circle and was very proud of myself when i was awarded 5 stars! I consider myself a beginner, and think this is a lot of fun, maybe more advanced yoga lovers might find this a bit silly or not very helpful.
Oh dear! I think the best you can do is to remember this important point:
You can not change another person, but you can change the way you relate to him/her.
Praxtice on not taking your mother in law seriously. You know who you are. You do not need to defend yourself in any way to this person. If she insists on being an idiot, ...let her be one. Her behaviour says nothing about who you are, only about herself.
If you can laugh while doing things like the IWii-Yoga, you render her powerless to hurt you.
I have Wii fit and agree with the previous comment, it is a game. I think it is fun in groups and great to get kids moving, but I agree that it isn't really a yoga practice. It certainly doesn't allow for the meditation I like while doing yoga. It may however be a good way for people to see what it is and maybe spark more interest in real, traditional yoga (It did help with my balance quite a bit )
