Native actors go beyond Westerns to werewolves byPocowatch

http://www.nativevue.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1705

Native actors go beyond Westerns to … werewolves?
Well, werewolves, in the case of Taylor Lautner, who stars in “New Moon,” the just-released second movie in the teen hit “Twilight” series. Lautner says he recently discovered Potawatomi and Ottawa roots; what’s more important, according to this opinion piece in the Wichita Eagle-Beacon, is that director Chris Weitz insisted on using actors of Native descent for the “Wolf Pack.” Spencer is Lakota (Sioux), Meraz is Purepecha (Tarasco), Gordon is Hualapai and Pelletier is Cree-Metis. The piece is by Rod Pocowatchit is from the Pawnee, Comanche and Shawnee tribes.

Thanksgiving? Posted in Reflets Sombres with tags Native American, Poetry, Thanksgiving on November 2, 2009 by buffalohair

Custer Stomp

Thanks Giving?

Oh what a day, Thanks Giving, so happy and so free.

A time of joy and merry bliss, to feast through out the day.

Elation fills the Autumn mist, to share the joyous tide.

But  in my heart I know the truth, my culture really died.

From time hence forth, from coast to coast and all through out the land.

Whispers from the Nanticoke and other Native bands.

Mark this time, Thanks Giving, the time we lost our land.

The Fabulous Andrea Menard
Posted in Entertainment with tags Andrea Menard, Canada, Evergreen by Andrea Menard, Metis Native, Native American, Robert Walsh, Saskatchewan, Tony Hrynchuk on October 1, 2009 by buffalohair

Sparkle

In an era where greed and hate prevail it is comforting that one can find solace, peace and tranquility. Through the velvety voice of the ever so talented Andrea Menard I found myself transported to a place where my mind can be at ease. Andrea and Robert Welsh wrote a beautiful song called “Evergreen” the first song of her new album “Sparkle”. Produced by Big Soul Productions and directed by Tony Hrynchuk, this piece is well worth experiencing.

Andrea, a Métis Native from Saskatchewan Canada, has become the ambassador of everything wholesome and pure in Canada. With the magic that Andrea is famous for she pierces the dark shroud of gloom that has engulfed both Canada and the U.S.A. with her beautiful voice in this wonderfully crafted video. I was whisked away from the harsh realities of contemporary life and placed on lush amber and green fields filled with blue skies. In some way I was given hope for the future for she reminded me that there is still beauty and joy in the tumultuous world we live.

Andrea is a magical creature gifted beyond words. Album after album of her wonderful music has proven to be enriching, endearing and well worth the wait. So take a moment of your time to enjoy this well crafted video and escape into the beautiful world of Andrea Menard. Maybe you will find solace and a little piece of mind if but for only a moment. Discover why she one of the top artists of all time.

Evergreen, the video;

New Exhibit On Native American Performing Arts Opens The Iroquois Indian Museum in Howes Cave, NY has announced the opening of their 2009 exhibition: “Native Americans in the Performing Arts: From Ballet to Rock and Roll.” America’s first Prima Ballerina, Maria Tallchief; Grammy winning singer/songwriter, Joanne Shenandoah; founding member of the Village People, Felipe Rose; and legendary Rock musician, Robbie Robertson are a few of the Native American performers featured in this dynamic new exhibition.

According to the exhibit announcement: Native American performing artists are an integral part of the growth of popular music and dance in America. Many Native musicians and dancers rank with the most notable and recognizable of popular performers. In classical, country, opera, and rock music and in vaudeville, ballet and modern dance, Native American performing artists often have been the innovators and the inspiration to other performers. In addition to the numerous contemporary Native performers, the exhibition honors some of the groundbreaking artists who starred in the early Wild West Shows and traveled the world performing with orchestras, operas and vaudeville productions. We also explore the rich
history of traditional Iroquois song and dance.

The exhibition runs from April 1 to December 31. A free opening reception and party will be held on Saturday, April 4 from 3 to 6 pm. As part of the exhibition, the Museum will present “Saturday Matinees” on the first Saturday of every month, featuring films and documentaries on many of the featured performers. For more information contact the Museum at: Iroquois Indian Museum, P.O. Box 7, 324 Caverns Road, Howes Cave, NY 12092, 518-296-8949, info@iroquoismuseum.org or visit our web site at www.iroquoismuseum.org

Buffalohair: VOTE FOR ANDREA MENARD July 11, 2009 12:45 PM

    VOTE FOR ANDREA MENARD

There is nothing like shamelessly promoting friends of mine who just happen to be talented beyond words. Andrea Menard is just such a person. From stage, screen, TV and beyond Andrea has proven to be one of the most articulate actress/singer, writer, producer etc, etc, etc to come from the Prairie of Saskatchewan or anywhere else for that matter.

This stunning beauty from the Métis Nation has performed before the royal family in a memorable command performance and has graced the airwaves with her own television series, Rabbit Fall. Her voice is pure like the driven snow and as sweet as the finest honey.

See for yourself and discover the world of Andrea Menard then cast your vote in the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Awards.

New postPosted: Sun Jun 07, 2009 3:56 am    Post subject: Hamlet, Prince of Denmark   Any Native actors in the Chicago area (or close to) interested in taking part in a unique film shoot?

I am preparing my first feature film. It is William Shakespeare's Hamlet. I am planning on a very quick, fast shoot with actors that can handle the dialogue. Think the DOGMA 95 group, or the look of Godard's "Breathless".

Set in the Not-so-distant future where enterprising oligarchies have come to power in this quasi-alternate reality. Hamlet, prince of "Denmark" must decide whether or not to avenge his father's murder. No, this is NOT the recently announced "Indie" Hollywood project with Speed Racer.

We will be casting towards the end of this month and through July hopefully, with rehearsals and shooting going on in late August. I am in the midst of locking down locations. Securing rights. No lighting needed. Sound crew/person a must.

    Hamlet: cast.
    Polonius: cast
    Horatio: pending
    English Ambassador: cast
    Fortinbras: pending

Other roles are wide open. Looking for Native actors to fill the roles. An All Roads Film Project grant in underway with other grants to be sought as well. Final cut will be for major festival submission and/or sale for distribution. All other details are in the works.

If you are interested, in either acting or crewing, drop me a message via this forum. Or see my profile here for e-mail to exchange contact info.

Last caveat: it will be full-length, full text.

    Grupo Fantasma

Indigenous in the News Featured Artist Review - Sonidos Gold

Wikipedia calls Grupo Fantasma a “Latin funk orchestra” and the Village Voice’s internationally recognized reviewer, Jim Caligiuiri says, “They’re the best band in Austin.” Created by fusing two other bands this album is the quintessential Latin band touring now. They are eleven members large with a big band sound including horns and percussion that are vital to maintaining the essential traditional elements of Latin music.

Maceo Parker is a special guest on the Sonidos Gold CD. Anyone ever heard of him? He was one of the pioneers of this sound. When you get someone of the stature of Maceo (His discography is as long as your arm including work with James Brown and George Clinton/Bootsy Collins) to sit in on your session, as a musician, you realize you are there. Our local punk funk hero Prince endorses them by saying, “Real musicians playing real music!”

It doesn’t take me very long to get into that funky dance rhythm. Dogg dances these mean streets like I own the place and I’m close to the surface of the streets as I ride and I get a chance to embrace the geography that I love. This sound is reminiscent not of the B, S, &T, Chicago, or Electric Flag style but more of Carlos Santana’s lesser-known brother, Jorge and the twelve member band Malo that had several good albums toward the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Grupo Fantasma starts their CD Sonidos Gold with El Sabio Soy Yo (The Wiseman) and a percussion intro with a storyline that reminds me of Carlos Castenada and a Yaqui way of life.

The song Naci De La (Rumba Y Guaguanco) is an explanation of the songwriter’s musical background. It also contains a traditional Yoruba Chant, which is something I would love to hear more of. It contains some of the most brilliant horn work I’ve heard since the original Al Kooper’s/BST/The Child Is The Father To The Man. This is the sound. One foot in the traditions yet, moving forward into the new millennium. It is an absolute joy to hear these musicians jam to the fade. I really dig the Trombone solo. Where do you hear a ‘bone solo nowadays?

Rebotar (Bounce Back) I haven’t heard tremolo/reverb in a long time. This might be what some reviewers are referring to when they call these musicians part of the psychedelia phenomenon of the 60’s. Those were the days when guitar players were infatuated with the Tremolo/Reverb thing. These guys aren’t infatuated but use these effects sparingly to invoke a different time. Tasteful use of effects is a big point in my lexicon.

Cumbia De Los Pajaritos is a song made for the cumbia music created when the African slaves the Spanish brought mixed with the local indigenous culture in Columbia. It was originally a courtship ritual.

The eighth track on Sonidos Gold, Gimme Some is a clever take-off on Carlos Santana’s Oye Como Va done in honor of the Great C. Santana and his numerous contributions to both Latin music and just plain music.

El Desconocido (The Unknown Person) is a disturbing lyric that looks to shock the listener on the possible results of a gang membership.

As expected, the responses to our recent blog, Johnny and Tonto Fistfight in Hollywood have been lively and thoughtful. Lots of emails and messages and several who've made their opinions public. The consensus has been that Johnny Depp, despite his talent and star power, is not the right choice for Tonto.

Well, what do you think? Is the upcoming Disney-Bruckheimer production continuing Hollywood's sorry history of ignoring Native talent, or is the involvement of Depp an acknowledgment that a 21st century Tonto has arrived?

'The Only Good Indian' gets into Sundance! Body: A film I worked on last summer that was shot in Kansas, "The Only Good Indian," directed by Kevin Willmott, has been accepted into the Sundance Film Festival!

Working on the crew was a great experience (I also have a small speaking role). So I'm proud to say I have a teensy part in helping this film come to life. I also think it tells an important story about a part of our history that has been glazed over for far too long.

Congrats to everyone involved! And hooray for filmmaking in Kansas!!

The 8th Annual Native Cinema Showcase

Presented by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA), and the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA)

The 2008 Native Cinema Showcase features recent works to expand our understanding of world indigenous cultures and to provide rich opportunities for audiences to cross generational and ethnic divides. Special programs consider Native languages and film, screen a new Native history series for public television, and provide workshops for young filmmakers.

This year NCS adds as a new partner SWAIA, the organization that produces Indian Market, and has expanded to include an additional venue at Cathedral Park near the Plaza. The showcase is also pleased to be working in conjunction with the Indigenous Language Institute, the New Mexico Film Office, WGBH, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center .
