Meanings of first names #1 August 01, 2007 3:14 AM
For all new and old members this is the new thread for you to find what your name might mean. There are some that I have no idea of their meanings so if anyone else has any ideas just post.
[send green star]
Ashley as a female name is Old English and meant From the Ash tree meadow. In the male form it is Anglo-Saxon with the meaning of Dweller in the ash tree meadow.
Erika is Norse for Powerful ruler. It is a symbolic name of royalty. Erika is the feminine form of Eric.
Justin in the masculine form is Latin and has the meaning of The just one. This person is thought to be one of upright principles and morals.
I said in a previous post that if any names I couldn't find I would make a further search and here is the result of this search so far;
Hala is Arabic for Halo, Ring and Glory.
Ayla is both a Hebrew name and a Turkish name. From the Hebrew its meaning is Oak tree where as the translation from its Turkish name is Moon glow.
Both these names are names that I find are very beautiful.
The following names are still being researched but some of them I would guess are just nicknames so have no true meaning - Masaia, Minke (definatly a nickname), Mahabala, Katica, Jocolin (have hazzard a gues on this one see previous thread), Katfa.
If anyone else knows the meanings of these names then please feel free to post the infomation.
Raven I thought I had done both yours and your wifes but I will get back to you on this. As for craft names I'm not sure but I will hunt around and see what I can come up with. If I find that I can acheive this then i would possible start a new thread called Meanings of Craft names. I think I can do this but give me time to gather the relevant infomation and do some research.
Rebecca ??? I believe is close to the same meaning.
You are wonderful to provide this information for us. It is interesting and fun too. Too bad we can't pick our own names - I named my daughter Rebecca Lorraine after her great, great, great grandmother - (my grandmother's grandmother). Actually, Rebecca likes her name and the fact that she is named after a much loved ancestor.
Judith yes you are right about your name however your daughters name means The Captivator and yet it is Hebrew. The name Lorriane means The Queen - French but Renownedin battle - Teutonic.
Lisa is Hebrew for Consecrated to God. It is a variation of Elizabeth or Melissa.
I realize you have a lot of meanings to post, but I haven't been able to find either of my names anywhere. I was wondering if you could do mine whenever you get the time...Farra and/or Farra. Thanks is advance Have a great weekend!!

Thank so much...I knew that Ayla was hebrew for the oak but didn't know it,s Turkish origin Moon Glow my daughter Ayla loves it. Once again thanks for your time. My other daughter is Katica pronounced Ka-tea-sa I think it's a nickname for Katie in hungarian am I right?
okay ladies I've looked up Faron which is a boys name and is Spanish it means Pharoah however the nearest I could find in female names is Farrah/Farah which is Middle English and means Beautiful.
Liz I am still searching for Katica but the name Katie is derived from Katherine which is Latin for Pure Maiden as my real does (Catherine).
Yeah people always think that I am a guy or that I'm not who I say I am because it is a boys name, that's why I usually go by Farra (spelling voted on by the web). Thank you so much Epona... You're Great!!
Paolo if spelt Paola is female and is the Italian for Little.
Pamela is Greek and means All sweetness and honey.
Patricia is actual another form of spelling Patrice but in this form it is the female form of the Latin for Well born maiden. The masculine is also Latin but means Noble patrician.
Finally Okami is a name that I have not discovered the meaning to but as soon as I have I will let you know.
Olja at present I have no idea what your name means but maybe if you are desended from a particular country ie is it that you are related to someone who came from another country hence your name. I am sorry that I can't help at present.

Phyllis is Greek and female it means Green bough.
Tara is Gaelic which is old Scottish/Irish. It means Towering rock. It is also the name of one of Irelands old distrits and it was the centre of Ireland where the High King of ancient Ireland resided.
Gwendolyn is Celtic and means White browed maid. I am not too sure quite what this means but it may refer to the colour of hair of the face but don't take my word for it!.
Dawn in reply to your second question I can do a few native American names but am still trying to discover a few more, however I have started a thread called specific country names and there are a few names there.
Dawn as a name is acuttaly quite obvious it is an Anglo-Saxon version of Eos which meant Break of day.
Queen is taken from Queena or Queenie and is Teutonic for TheQueen.
Brenda is possible from Brendan which is the male form. it is Gaelic for Little raven or From the fiery hill.
James is the Hebrew for the Supplanter and is a dervative of Jacob.
Karen is derived from the Greek Katherine/ Catherine which meant Pure Maiden.
Final Theo is possible from Theobald which is Teutonic, meaning Bold leader of the people, or Theodora - Greek - gift of God or Theodoric - Teutonic - ruler of the people.
Both Onkar and Marlena are unknown at present but I will do some research into the meanings.
Hi. My name is Eden, and my craft name is Moriba. I was wondering to mainly see what you would come up with what they each mean because i've gotten different things for both. but, my reg. name is usually the same thing.
Moriba after much hunting and cussrsing over your craft name I have finally located the meaning - Curious seeker of knowledge but where it originated from I still have no idea. Maybe you could let me know why you chose this name and what you know about it since I am on the journey of learning all that i can and this name has really got me going.
Eden is Hebrew for Paradise.
Manuel is also Hebrew for God in us.
Andy is Greek for Manly or courageous.
Marlena I have located this name after another one of my hunts and found out that is Hebrew for Descendant of Mary.
Finally Mystic is actual quite an obvious name but from my research it is English and derived from Mystical or Magical which it also means.
Thank you Epona for your time and information in this! Its great fun to read the meanings of everyone's names and the history is just wonderful! I very diversified group we have here!

Okay while in Egypt our tour guide was named Habibi Rabi which is Arabic for 'My babies'. Most of us didnt realise this and now understand why we were called Habibis group. Rabi I have no idea at present what it means but will be looking it up.
One of the lads on the cruise is named Nick and I am so sorry to say that his name in Arabic translates as 'F..K' which is why he was laughed at by the Egyptians when he had it tattoed on his wrist. so beware when abroad your name might be rather rude but that is life.
The secret comes out.. lol Isma is not a craft name, but a special name given to me 15 years ago. It is a Runic name.. I work with Runes since 1990 and have created an online course in German Die Runen der Goettin and also been the author of a small book called The Runes of the Goddess.
So my name.. I .. Isa .. the magic wand of the Goddess that helps to stay centred so your life can travel easy and the water of life will not freeze.. S ... Sunna Sowelo The sun power is helping you to achieve what you want to achieve and enables you to help thouse that needs your help. M= Ma... which is in other systems Algiz It is the second aspect of the Goddess A=ASA... This Rune helps you to gain insight and divine inspiration it also stands for poetry and in witchy terms spells. The magic of the power of the words.
It is quite funny , as I found out later, that the name Isma is also a name for islamic women.. lol.. and I also know of one nothern person that does have this name. The strangest thing was for me that a friend of mine told me that Isma was a hidden name for a old Goddess from Sumeria I think.. ..........
