While
you were enjoying your Thanksgiving dinner of turkey and mashed
potatoes, another type of bird - the infamous Vulture - was feasting on
Liberia, one of the poorest countries in the world. Liberians had
little to be thankful for this past week when a British court awarded
two Vulture Funds $20 million for a debt that dates back to 1978. For
a country that sits in the bottom 15 for worst living standards in the
world, that $20 million siphoned off by the Vulture Funds is equal to
105% of the country's education budget and 155% of its health budget in
2008.
Please act now to stop this type of Vulture profiteering from world's poorest.
So how could this happen?
The
Liberian government, currently headed by Ellen
Johnson-Sirleaf, has shown itself as a model of responsible borrowing
since the end of the war. Despite the illegitimacy of Liberia's loans,
taken out by dictatorial governments and used to fuel and finance the
14 years of civil war, the new democratic government has done all it
can to start fresh by clearing its past debts. In 2007, Liberia paid
off its arrears to the World Bank and African Development Bank, and in
April of this year successfully negotiated a $1.2 billion buy-back of
its commercial debt - at 3 cents on every dollar it 'owed'.
These
successes should be cause for celebration, but this past holiday
weekend, Liberia received a deafening blow to its recovery from the
civil war when two Vulture Funds, Wall Capital Ltd. and Hamsah
Investments, sued in
British courts and were awarded $20 million. These Vulture Funds held
the rights to a $6 million debt from 1978, which has been passed
through many hands and has an unclear record of
spending and repayment - the money may have even financed and fuelled
the civil war. Unfortunately, because debt cancellation and buy-back
mechanisms are voluntary, these Vultures refused to participate in the
commercial debt buy-back. Instead, Wall Capital and Hamsah Investments
held on to their loan and then swooped in to profiteer off of Liberia's
poor and all the other creditors who participated in Liberia's debt
restructuring.
This
latest outrage demonstrates the urgent need to stop the abuse of U.S.
and UK courts by these morally reprehensible Vulture Funds.
Please take action today- tell your Representative to cosponsor the Stop Vulture Funds Act. For more information on the Stop Vulture Funds Act,click here.
Thanks to all who support justice in Liberia and around the world.

Native Americans: Congress Could Honor the Promises on Health Care
The health insurance overhaul being debated in
Congress could bring the most significant improvements to the Indian
health system in decades and uphold a trust responsibility to tribes
throughout the United States. FCNL Program Assistant Inez Steigerwald discusses a recent New York Times article
about the prospects for inclusion of the Indian Health Care Improvement
Act in the final health bill. You can influence the debate: write your senators today.
Good news. The world is finally waking up to the scale of the
challenge posed by climate change. The message from the scientific
community has never been clearer - action is needed now in order to
dramatically reduce our global emissions of greenhouse gases.
Bad news. The slow progress in the US Congress, the European Union,
and what's on the table in Copenhagen is completely out of step with
the scale and speed of reductions called for by science.
Oil Change International supports efforts to reduce our emissions of
greenhouse gases but focuses instead on corporate accountability and
transformative change. We're aiming to expose and reduce big polluter
influence on our government, because we think that's a key ingredient
in winning for the planet and the people.
I'm going to Copenhagen tomorrow to try to shine a spotlight on the
role of Big Oil and Coal in fighting any meaningful action on climate
change.
Can you help?
First, we're going to be publicizing the destructive role of corporate
lobbyists, and highlighting those business groups and companies that
have made the greatest effort to sabotage the climate talks, while
promoting, and profiting from, false solutions.
But we need your help!
Please vote now
for the worst corporation in the Angry Mermaid Award! (By the way, if
you're stuck wondering which corporation is most GUILTY, go here.
Finally, if you're scratching your head trying to make sense of
climate politics both in the US and globally, I strongly recommend checking out this video by our good friends at the Story of Stuff Project and Climate Justice Now. Enjoy.
CCR has fought for reproductive justice for women since the
days when abortion was illegal. Decades later, women's rights are still
under attack. The proposed national health care reform being
considered by Congress includes dangerous restrictions to a women's
right to choose and we must not let this happen. Take action today and
write your Senator and Representative today
The "Stupak Amendment" of the Affordable Health Care for America
Act, which is Congress' health care reform bill, would: 1) prevent
women participating in the public health insurance exchange from
purchasing private insurance that covers abortion - even if they using
their own money; 2) prevent women who receive tax subsidies from
purchasing private insurance that covers abortion - even if they're
using their own money; and 3) In many cases, prevent low-income women
from accessing abortion services entirely.
The "Stupak Amendment" would be a major downward shift in U.S.
policy. This Amendment goes far beyond the Hyde Amendment of 1976,
which made it illegal for federal funds to be spent on abortion,
stripping millions of poor women of the right to choose. The
legislators who are seeking to use health care reform to rollback
women's reproductive rights and their conservative supporters are
working hard to ensure that these restrictive provisions are
reconstituted in the final Bill.
The Center has joined in coalition with the Planned Parenthood
Federation of America (PPFA), and over forty other groups, including
the National Organization for Women and the Center for Reproductive
Rights, to ensure that there is no such provision further restricting
the right to choose in any final national health care legislation. We
urge you to:
Over three decades ago, CCR challenged the Hyde Amendment, in the
landmark abortion rights case Harris v. McRae as violating the First
and Fifth Amendments by severely impacting the health or poor women by
denying them a procedure that 1 in 3 women will have in her life. (For
more information, visit the Harris v. McRae legal case page.) Unfortunately a sharply divided Supreme Court disagreed, and the Amendment stood. Now,
thirty years later, the national debate on health care reform is being
used as an excuse to roll back abortion rights. We cannot let this
happen.
After
a decade of campaigning, we can finally celebrate as the UK Marine and
Coastal Access Bill becomes law - giving our oceans the urgent and
effective protection they deserve. Thanks to everyone who backed our
campaign. More...
Our work begins now to secure a smart, effective 2011
International Affairs Budgetthe foundation for U.S. programs saving and improving
lives around the world.
A bipartisan sign-on letter urging President Obama to request
a robust International Affairs Budget for fiscal year 2011 is making its way through
the halls of Congress. Tell Congressman Ander Crenshaw to sign on before the November 25 deadline:
Please sign on to the Berman-Kirk letter asking President Obama for
a robust 2011 International Affairs Budget.
The International Affairs Budget funds our country's most
critical poverty-reducing programs, including those which fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis,
malaria and other treatable, preventable diseases; improve maternal, newborn and
child health; and advance agriculture productivity and food security.
These investments through the International Affairs Budgetwhich
is only 1.5% of the total U.S. budgetare empowering people across the African
continent to lead productive, healthy, self-sustaining lives. Our programs are working,
but we need the IAB robust in order to do the most good and make the biggest difference.
The Berman-Kirk letter is Congress opportunity to send a
strong message to President Obama on how they want the International Affairs Budget
to look. But they're looking to YOU to tell them, first.
Tell Rep. Crenshaw you want his support for a robust International
Affairs Budget:
The nature of food production in the U.S. has as much of an impact on our health as it does on the environment, and massive corporate farms are getting off scott free.
From the corn farms that fatten our country up with corn syrup and create 'dead zones' in our oceans to hog farms that spread disease and pollute our drinking water supplies, corporate farms are the 800 pound gorilla in the health care debate.
Yet nobody's talking about it -- and they need to be. So take a minute right now, and send the message to your representative that any health care debate needs to include a serious health issue -- corporate agribusiness.
Last
week President Obama shared his plan for health care reform for
all of us. He asked Congress to reach across the aisle and work
together to change our broken health care system.
Now it's your turn to address Congress.
President Obama needs your help convincing Congress to act
now. Lend your voice to the cause by recording your own personal
message about why we need health reform.

Led by such health freedom luminaries as Gary Null, PhD, Human
Nutrition & Public Health Science, Rima E. Laibow, MD, Medical
Director of the Natural Solutions Foundation, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org,
and Dr. Tedd Koren, DC of Citizens for Health Choice, we filed a formal
Citizens Petition to the FDA today expressing our serious concerns
about the approval of dangerous Swine Flu vaccines BEFORE ANY SAFETY TESTING IS COMPLETED.
A Citizens Petition, unlike an internet petition, is a formal
statement of grievance which challenges the governments actions, asks
for specific protection and redress, as provided for by the
Constitution of These United States:
Pursuant to the Constitution of the United States of America, First
Amendment, Right to Petition for Redress of Grievances the Federal
Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), 21 U.S.C. §§ 321 et seq., and the
Administrative Procedure Act (APA), 5 U.S.C. § 553(e), to amend the
FDAs rules respecting the safety, effectiveness and availability of
vaccines said to be useful for swine flu (A-H1N1-09)
The goal of this regulatory intervention is to stop FDAs headlong,
dangerous and unjustified rush to approve the so-called swine flu
vaccination, even before safety testing has been completed. If FDA
fails to act on our Petition in a timely fashion, a Temporary
Restraining Order (TRO) can be sought from the Federal Courts to stop
the alleged emergency approval process.
The Petition details, in ten pages of carefully structured and well
supported reasoning, the legal and factual basis for a formal stay of
the approval process, citing issues of transparency and science-based
decision making, which the President claims to be the hallmarks of his
Administration. The FDA has failed to follow statutory and case law
requirements for the emergency approval of these un-insurable, untested
and unproven vaccines which have been recently cited for their
potential dangers to health and safety here and abroad.

Emergency Citizens Petition and join in our efforts. You can add your

PETA is looking for a plaintiff (or multiple plaintiffs) to file suit against Lowe's for misleading consumers about the cruelty inherent in its glue traps.
PETA has repeatedly called on Lowe's to stop selling glue traps adhesive boards that small animals become trapped on and on which they suffer greatly, panicking and getting their faces caught and slowly starving or suffocating to death. Rather than stop selling glue traps, Lowe's has chosen to mislead consumers by making them believe that the mice are anesthetized when caught. Lowe's says that it "only carr[ies] the products that contain Eugenol, which is an anesthetic." This is totally misleading, and here's why:
Eugenol does not work at all as a painkiller when applied topically, as it is in glue traps. Eugenol only works when injected directly into the bloodstream or pumped into the stomach. In fact, the eugenol in glue traps may make the experience more painful for trapped animals by causing a painful burning sensation and nausea.
We are exploring legal action to stop Lowe's from misleading consumers. If you or someone you know bought a glue trap from Lowe's under the impression that it would be a more humane form of rodent control because of its eugenol content and were upset by the suffering the traps subsequently cause or are angry after learning the truth about Lowe's claims, here's what to do: Please get in touch with Alicia at PETA at AliciaW@peta.org or 323-644-7382, extension 23. And if you haven't already asked Lowe's to stop selling glue traps, please do so here.
Thank you for all that you do for animals.
Sincerely,
Alicia Woempner Special Projects Coordinator People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
A dangerous pesticide may be lurking in your child's insulated lunch bag!
Microban is playing up its products as great buys for back-to-school. But Microban is just one trade name for the pesticide triclosan. Make sure you know the facts about triclosan before sending your kids back to school.
Check the label to see if your child's lunch bags, scissors, rulers, sharpeners, protractors, erasers, pencils, highlighters and permanent markers contain Microban.
Depending on the company that is selling triclosan, it may also appear in products as Microban, Irgasan, Biofresh, Lexol-300, Ster-Zac or Cloxifenolum. Manufacturers use triclosan in lunch bags and other school supplies as an antimicrobial agent to prevent the growth of bacteria.
But triclosan has serious human and environmental health effects. In fact, on August 24, 2009, the Canadian Medical Association called for a federal ban on the use of triclosan in consumer products. Triclosan is a known endocrine disruptor and accumulates in our bodies. It also persists in our waterways and is toxic to aquatic life. Furthermore, triclosan is not proven to reduce illness!
It's easy to avoid triclosan and microban. Read the label! Encourage your schools, workplace, and religious institutions to use their buying power to go triclosan-free and take the anti-triclosan pledgetoday!
Western Atlantic bluefin tuna are in deep peril. This amazing fish that can swim over 40 mph and weigh up to 1,500 pounds is in danger of becoming extinct within 10 years. Rampant commercial fishing has reduced the mature population of this fish by 80% since 1970. Despite this, the federal government is proposing to increase the catch in the Gulf of Mexico, the only known spawning area for bluefin tuna in the western Atlantic Ocean.
Fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico targeting swordfish and yellowfin tuna deploy up to 40 miles of long-lines in the water with hundreds of baited hooks attached. During the 10 hours a day these long-lines are fishing, species that are supposed to be protected in the Gulf of Mexico including bluefin tuna, marlins, and sea turtles are caught and killed. Instead of eliminating this wasteful fishing gear, the Federal government is proposing to allow commercial fishermen to kill and sell more bluefin tuna, despite the fact that their population is at the lowest levels on record.

Kids across the country will soon be heading back to school. While there are often mixed emotions about heading back to school, one thing is certain, we're upset that some of the milk they'll be drinking this fall will be from cows treated with artificial growth hormones. We're working to make it clear that schools can purchase milk that is free of artificial growth hormones, and we need your help. Can you take action to get rBGH-free milk into your school?
Roughly 15 percent of all dairies (mostly large dairies) in the United States inject their cows with an artificial growth hormone called recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) that increases cows' milk production. Besides the documented increase of infections in dairy cows injected with rBGH, which necessitates increased use of antibiotics, there are ongoing questions about links to cancer in humans. As a result, most of the industrialized countries in the world have banned this hormone.
It is possible that at least 84 million gallons of milk from artificial hormone-treated cows were distributed through the school nutrition programs in fiscal year 2005-2006 - or about one out of five pints of milk offered in school cafeterias nationwide.
We launched our campaign this year to get milk produced with artificial hormones out of schools once and for all, and have delivered more than 25,000 petitions to members of Congress asking them to clarify that schools do have the option to purchase rBGH-free milk or organic milk. We'll continue to work on this ask; Congress takes up the Child Nutrition Act Reauthorization this fall. In the meantime, let's make sure the schools in your area aren't serving rBGH milk.

You helped make this new law possible, through more than 10 years of
grassroots campaigning alongside other Corporate Accountability
International members and coalition partners. But it includes a
dangerous loophole: allowing for tobacco industry representation on an
FDA Scientific Advisory Committee, a measure that is inconsistent with
the global tobacco treaty.
We've provided a sample comment below, but feel free to edit or draft
your own. With your help we can prevent the tobacco industry from
setting health policy, and save millions from tobacco addiction,
disease and death.

Dear Commissioner Hamburg,
I'm writing to express my belief that FDA regulation of tobacco is a
great step forward in protecting our kids, and future generations, from
Big Tobacco. I look forward to your agency tackling this new
responsibility with vigor.
I am also writing to urge you to enforce the Family Smoking Prevention
and Tobacco Control Act in a way that lays the groundwork for full,
constructive U.S. participation in the World Health Organization
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). As you know, the
U.S. is one of the few remaining countries that have not ratified this
treaty, so our citizens are not yet protected by its life-saving
measures.
You will need to be vigilant, as there is one glaring inconsistency
between this new law and the global tobacco treaty. Because Big Tobacco
has a fundamental and irreconcilable conflict of interest with public
health, the treaty safeguards health policy against tobacco industry
interference.
Unfortunately, this new legislation gives the tobacco industry a seat
at the table in setting FDA policies. Including industry
representatives on the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee
is akin to letting the fox guard the henhouse. The tobacco corporations
will seek to exploit this loophole, just as they are trying to get
governments around the world to ignore their obligations under the FCTC.
I urge you to resist and bring to light any attempts by the tobacco
industry to undermine FDA regulation. Along with other members of
Corporate Accountability International, I will be closely following the
exercise of your new authority, and thank you in advance for your work
to protect our kids from Big Tobacco's dirty tricks and predatory
marketing.
With
anti-healthcare reformers on the loose at town hall meetings of late,
it's no wonder the news is all healthcare, all the time. But when senators return from their August recess, they'll also be tackling the energy/climate legislation.
The flawed cap and trade bill, ACESA (Waxman/Markey), passed the House in July without the following amendments to improve it:
The
Renewable Energy Standard (RE must be restored to the more stringent
levels that were in the ACESA draft released in March,
Strengthen emissions reduction targets, and eliminate or significantly
reduce offsets and strengthen verification of offset quality,
Protect low and middle-income families: eliminate free allowances to
industry, and recycle revenue directly to households.
Eliminate carbon markets and substitute a direct pricing mechanism,
withholding sufficient revenue from recycling to help boost the
transition to a clean energy economy and mitigate adverse global
warming effects.
Eliminate carbon capture and sequestration (CC and limit transition
assistance to trade-exposed industries. Increase investment in
renewables and in job creation in a green economy..
Protect EPAs authority to directly regulate emissions of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.
We are now working on senators to make the necessary amendments without furthering weakening the bill. Take action here.

In 2006 a woman was brutally raped at gunpoint in front of her children in the parking garage of the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa, and she is suing the Marriott for negligence for their failure to provide adequate security.
Last week, Marriott's reprehensible legal stragety was revealed in the press; in legal documents, Marriott lawyers claimed the woman was careless, negligent and "failed to exercise due care for her own safety and the safety of her children and proper use of her senses and facilities."
Now, in an effort to stop the (well deserved) backlash Marriott International has stated they will stop the "blame the victim" legal defense.
Marriott's actions were cruel and heartless and no doubt have added to the rape survivor's trauma. What's more, Marriott's actions have sent a chill to women everywhere since fear of being blamed and facing ruthless legal tactics are key reasons that survivors don't report this all-too-common demeaning and brutal crime.
It is time for society to stop blaming survivors of rape for the crimes committed against them and to start placing the blame squarely where it belongs - on the men who perpetrate these acts and on societal attitudes that excuse men's violence and condone the degradation of women.
ACT NOW! Click here to send a free, pre-written message to Marriott telling them their latest response is too little too late. Urge them to stop playing legal hardball and instead take actions that will truly support the survivor and all women.
Please help send this message far and wide to make sure Marriott knows their latest actions are not enough to let them off the hook. In addition to forwarding this email plese post on facebook, twitter, blogs, comment boards, use our "share" tools on SFV to "Digg" our action alert and whatever else you can.

Dont Schoolchildren Deserve the Option of Healthy Alternatives to Cows Milk?
The
Child Nutrition Act is the foundation for food policy in our schools.
This year, Congress will reauthorize the law, providing us with a
tremendous opportunity to make non-dairy alternatives to cows milk an
option for children in school cafeterias around the country.
Currently,
virtually all children participating in the National School Lunch
Program (NSLP) are automatically served cows milk, despite the fact
that as many as eight million schoolchildren are lactose intolerant,
and countless others avoid cows milk for health, environmental and
ethical reasons. A longstanding federal policy stipulates that schools
will only be reimbursed for meals containing a serving of cows milk.
As a result, healthy, plant-based alternatives to cows' milk - such as
fortified soy, rice and almond milk - are unavailable to children in
almost all schools participating in the NSLP.
Denying children
easy access to dairy alternatives is especially damaging to minority
populations, particularly African Americans and Latino children who are
not only more likely to be lactose intolerant (according to the
National Institutes of Health), but also make up a greater percentage
of those dependent upon the NSLP for their nutritional needs. The
effect of this inequity is that while the dairy industry reaps profits
from the NSLP, schoolchildren (and cows on dairy farms) suffer unjustly.
PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO ENSURE THAT SCHOOLCHILDREN HAVE READY ACCESS TO NON-DAIRY ALTERNATIVES.
Please call your senators and representative today. You can find their phone numbers here.
Simply state that you are a constituent and ask them to support
alternatives to cows milk in the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act.
In September, Congress will have the opportunity to pass legislation
that will provide universal health coverage for all Americans.
Im not talking about the White House sponsored HR 3200. Rather, Im
referring to HR 676, also known as the United States National Health
Care Act. HR 676, which provides true universal health coverage for all
Americans, is based on a single-payer system and is modeled after
Medicare. President Obama supported HR 676 during his campaign, but for some reason changed his mind
and now wants Congress to pass HR 3200, a watered-down bill that
provides many nice early Christmas presents to the insurance and
pharmaceutical industry. Say it aint so, Mr. President, say it aint
so!
Technically, the amendment offered by NY Rep. Anthony Weiner would
replace the current text of HR 3200 with the text of HR 676.
Its not going to be easy to get this done, but its possible.
The amendment needs 218 votes to pass. It cant be accomplished without
