ANTI-WAR SOLDIERS, Veterans for Peace, Youth Counselors; Resources from SyracuseCulturalWorkers February 06, 2009 1:09 PM

I just checked a book out of the library: "Anti-War Soldier: How to Dissent Within the Ranks of the Military", by Jonathan W. Hutto, Sr.; Preface by David Cortright. An invaluable work for those wishing to navigate the military's legal hassles and roadblocks. Hutto does not approve of going AWOL, as a protest; he says, Stay and fight! He uses his own, and others', experience as a Navy officer as an example.

In an Appendix, there are listed ten Rights Support Organizations. Make copies for anyone you know in the Militry who might find these useful!

Anti-War Soldier materials available from Syracuse Cultural Workers March 30, 2009 1:49 PM

I. Antiwar Soldier: How to Dissent Within the Ranks of the Military; by Jonathan W. Hutto, Sr.

"Last year Able Seaman Jonathan Hutto banded together with a small group of fellow servicemen/women and formed Appeal for Redress, one of the first active duty antiwar groups since the Vietnam era. Drawing on his own experiences, as well as lessons from the Viet Nam GI resistance movement, this book educates military members and others about their citizenship rights." Softcover, 5x7, 170pp, 2008; $16.

II. Winter Soldier; Iraq and Afghanistan. IVAW and Aaron Glantz.

"Here are the powerful words of the historic gathering in Spring 2008 when Iraq Veterans Against the War gathered veterans to expose war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq." Softcover 5x8, 240pp, 2008; $16.

III. Meeting Resistance {DVD} Directed by Steve Connors and Molly Bingham.

"Q. What would you do if the US were invaded?

A: Resist, just like the Iraqis are doing. Insurgents, militants, anti-Americans, terrorists, extremists, al-Qaida -- the Pentagon/media spin labels them anything but Iraqis which, overwhelmingly, is what the people fighting the US occupation of their country are. This important, powerful film removes the spin to reveal everyday Iraqis talking about why they fight their country's invaders." 85 min. 2008; $22.

IV. Peace Notecards {14 different designs} A fundraiser for Iraq Veterans Against the War {IVAW.org}. To order go to SyracuseCulturalWorkers.com.

All of the above are from the new catalog: see the following posts for address, phone, and website.

PETE SEEGER AT 89
"Pete Seeger at 89" is the name of his new album.

"32 newly recorded songs, instrumentals and spoken word segments that address some of Pete's major concerns: ecology and the environment, the ongoing war {a new recording of the classic, 'Waist Deep in the Big Muddy'}, the need for personal responsibility and activism, the joys of friendship and community. Pete sings or plays {banjo, 12-string guitar, acoustic guitar, recorder} on all of the tracks, accompanied by Hudson River Valley musicians."

You can get this from the CATALOG, "Tools for Change"/ Syracuse Cultural Workers/P.O.Box 6367/Syracuse, NY 13217-6367.

Another CD in the catalog: "Sowing the Seeds; the 10th Anniversary. Pete Seeger/Various Artists".

"Appleseed celebrates its first decade with this 37-track collection including exclusive new recordings by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Seeger, Ani DiFranco, Donovan, and more. With nine new tracks specifically recorded for this birthday celebration. A veritable Who's Who of socially aware musicians."

Also, this BOOK is offered in the catalog:

GOOD CHANTS: "More than a dozen songs {to well-known tunes} and 75 chants from the civil rights, labor and peace movements. Guaranteed to make your demonstrations, rallies and sing alongs more rousing, enjoyable and effective. Chanting or singing together builds community and solidarity."

And, finally, one more example of the good stuff in the catalog: "Lullabies From The Axis Of Evil": "Women from Iraq, Iran, and North Korea sing traditional lullabies of their lands, and Western artists offer interpretations of the songs. Songs from other countries and territories that have a prickly history with the US, including Syria, Cuba, Afghanistan and Palestine are included. Across cultures, nationalities and religions, these moving original vocals powerfully express the tenderness we feel for our children."

This is a very good catalog, there's lots and lots more, including posters, buttons, all that rad propaganda stuff.
