Young chimps at Kumasi Zoo, Ghana June 30, 2008 2:02 AM

A recent visit to Kumasi Zoo to check on the two older chimps, revealed that although the two older chimps are kept in relatively good conditions (thanks primarily to help from activists in the recent years), the two younger chimps who were relocated to the Kumasi Zoo from the now-closed Accra Zoo in recent months, are kept in filth and really bad conditions, even though they could have more space and cleaner surroundings.  Several e-mails that were sent off to various persons and groups both in Ghana and internationally, to get action to improve the situation of these chimps, have gone un-answered.  Thus: any advice or guidance as to how to deal with this matter will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.  Photographs of the chimps can be viewed at my photo albums.  Best wishes, Gwendolyn Wellmann

Young chimps at Kumasi Zoo, Ghana - an update August 26, 2008 2:55 AM

This is a short update:  I have managed to get hold of the vet, who is in charge of the Ghana zoos.  He has traveled to Kumasi to investigate and has communicated that efforts have been made to improve the situation for the two chimps.  Their cage is now reported to be cleaner and the middle gate has been opened to allow them more space, and they have been provided with a swing and other toys.

I will visit Ghana again in September and will do my best to travel to Kumasi to make sure that this has indeed happened.
