Petition oddity/bug September 12, 2009 11:28 AM

Okay, this is a bit complex, so I took screen captures to make it easier to understand.

It involves signing a Care2 petition if you live in Canada. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It used to be that when you signed a petition, it would not recognise that you lived in Canada and you would have to choose "Non US" in the "State" field and your name would show up as "Jane Smith - NU" which was kind of annoying because not only would it not acknowledge that you live in Canada, it would also incorrectly gave the abbreviation of "NU", which to Care2 means "Non US" but in reality, is the abbreviation for the Canadian territory of "Nunavut."

Canadians signing Care2 petitions would all have to move en masse to Nunuvut in order for the "NU" on the petition to be accurate.

Anyway, Care2 changed all that and now when you choose "Canada" from the drop-down menu in the Country field, it switches the "State" and "Zipcode" fields to properly read "Province" and "Postal Code" and you can choose from the Canadian provinces and territories in the drop-down menu without having to choose the vague "Non US" heading or wade through fifty-plus state names and commonwealths and "overseas US military" gobbledegook.

Fine.

Here's a screen cap of page one, before I chose a province in the "Province" field (sorry about stretching the thread, but it's hard to see in a smaller size). Everything is fine here, as you can see:

Here's the page after I selected the province of Ontario. Everything is still fine, as you can see:

Now here's where it gets weird.

I go to select "Ontario" in the province field and then click on "Sign." Instead of taking me straight to the final page, a pop-up window appears and says the following:

It's says that I entered "ON" (the abbreviation for "Ontario") but that my profile says "Ontario" and then it wants to know if I want to change my profile information to reflect the so-called "change."

But wait! I did NOT "enter ON." I chose the word "Ontario" from the drop-down menu in the "Province" field, and the word, as can clearly be seen above, is, "Ontario", not "ON."

There was no "change" in information. There is no "new" information. If my profile says "Ontario" and I chose the word "Ontario" in the "Province" field, why is it saying that I "entered ON"? Why is that registering as a disparity?

Also, look closely behind the pop-up window. It says the following:

Name                           ST      Country
Mr Christian Bobak        ON     CA

But ... but ... I thought we already established on page one of the petition that Ontario is a PROVINCE and not a "state". Why is the abbreviation for "State" above the name of my province on page two? And why is the abbreviation for "Canada" written "CA" instead of "CAN"?

"CA" is the abbreviation for "California", not "Canada."

If page one of the petition knows that I'm living in a Canadian province, why isn't that reconciled on page two? Why does it revert back to "State" and why does it think I entered the abbreviation "ON" when I did not? Even if I wanted to, I couldn't because it only gives me the choice of choosing full province names, not abbreviations.

Very strange, and I've already sent a bug report in, so we'll see what happens.

Have any other people in Canada run into this issue?
