Rat Tricks September 10, 2005 11:02 PM

Does anyone have a rat that can do some form of trick? Mine  are mostly food motivated. They will climb to get food when I come to the cage, even if I just stand in front of it. And if I make a certain sound they come running. They also follow cues from my Guinea pigs who squeek when I open the fridge. Now when I open the fridge they come to the top of the cage because the pigs taught them that that means veggies. I can also point out food I have dropped in the cage and my rat will follow where I am pointing to find it. They also have several methods to reach the spot where I hand food in. Right now I am trying to get them to come when I call their names.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Tricks! September 17, 2005 6:06 PM

As of now, my rats are not too trick-worthy - I have too many to work with. They do all know their names and most will come when called.

In the past I've had rats that would pull a string hanging outside their cage until they got the treat that was tied to the end of it. Kinda fun to watch.

I know other people have taught their rats other tricks but I haven't been able to take the time! Wish I could!

Good question, though!

I used to pet sit my neighbors' rat September 25, 2005 4:04 PM

& really had fun w/ her. She used to try to rearrange the hair on top of my head or run around my shoulders, & would sit & look at me if I scolded her. She was really a very sociable & cute girl.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
My Best Pet! September 28, 2005 4:44 PM

I had the sweetest rat in the world! His name was Harpo, and he looked very much like the gray/white rat in that photo. I "saved" him from a pet store because he was probably going to be some snake's dinner....He was so smart and loveable and I hope to have another some day. He ended up growing some kind of tumor on his cheek and I had a tough time finding a vet who would treat him...but I did, and they operated on him (to the tune of $300.00!, which they cut in half because they couldn't believve someone would spend that much on a $5.00 pet!) But money is no question when such a sweet creature needs help!

Thanks for letting me tell his story!
