anonymous advice on hairless rats November 01, 2005 8:43 PM

hello..i recently purchased 2 baby hairless rats. I am also a first-time rat owner. I have not had good luck with these 2 rats. They seem very fragile and sickly. The first one got sick and died, and now the second one looks like he may not last long either. And I have even given him antibiotics. Are the hairless rats harder to care for? Or am I just doing something wrong?  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Hairless Ratties November 02, 2005 8:29 AM

Well.....

Hairless rats are not necessarily more difficult to care for, but can sometimes come from breeding stock that is not healthy.

If you purchased them from a pet store, it's possible that they are breeder "throw-offs" - someone who is "experimenting" with breeding hairless rats and until he or she gets it right, will keep breeding and breeding and bringing the "tests" to the pet store to sell. Very sad. I've purchased several hairless this way and they don't live very long. Abdominal tumors, severe cases of pneumonia...all sorts of things take their sweet lives.

As long as they are not in cold drafts and not in extreme heat, and you are feeding them properly and they have water and love every day, you are doing everything right.

Is the remaining rat sneezing a lot? Does he/she have red stains around the eyes/nose? Lethargic? Not eating?

My hairless have all been very gentle and quiet until they are out of their cages and then they are full of energy and fun.

Where did you get your hairless?

Cindy..

Thanks for the rat info. Unfortunately and heartbreakingly, my 2nd hairless rat died last night. It did have reddish stains around its nose and eyes. I purchased both my hairless rats from a local pet shop. And they were both sneezing and "squeaking" alot after I got them home. It has been heartbreaking to have them both die when they were so sweet and cuddly.

My poor lil' Harvie died on Monday... my poor baby! One minute watching his favourite TV program, the next limp in my arms...

Now I have no babies left! Where did all the squidgies go?

How old was Harvie? I'm so very sorry to hear of his passing. It's just not fair. They don't live long enough as it is...

Did you think he was ill?

Your friend,

Cindy

I don't know... I think he was old... he was about 2 years and 2 months... he didnt seem in pain, but suddenly he passed away... well, I'm glad it was peaceful.
