Companions November 21, 2005 12:34 PM

Hellooo,

I have a new rat called Suzi, after losing Harvie. Anyway, when I went to the pet shop, I had to choose between her and two lovely boys. I was tempted to get the boys (I like boy ratties very much), but the lady of the pet shop said they would not be sold alone, because they only sell them in pairs.

Suzi was the only girl in her litter. Anyway, I got her because I was scared she'd end up somewhere without a companion and an owner that gave her no attention. I don't regret it at all, I love her very much, but I want to give her a friend for Christmas. I was thinking a neutered boy rescue rat, but I'm still not sure!

I've heard mixed-gender pairs tend to get on well, but I want to make sure. Does anyone have any experience, and advice on whether I should introduce her to another rat?

OK, I've done some research and so far I've seen that it's a good idea to have same-sex groups, and introduce them before they are 10 weeks old. I have some time; Suzi turned 5 weeks yesterday. I need help quickly! I do think she needs ratty company, even though I will give her lots of attention.  [ send green star]

Oh yes, Catriona. Introduce her to another rat. They do need companionship from another rat.

Same sex is very good (especially if you don't want babies, or you doesn't want to have to pay for a neutering surgery). At her age, if you get another female, it should work out well. Just do the introduction in a neutral place. Like a small carrying container. Someplace where they are unfamiliar and feel the need to cling to each other. Clean the original cage thoroughly before you put them back in there together.

If you choose a male, he MUST be neutered before you introduce them. Females can get pregnant very early and you could end up with from 6-20 babies in no time. It's a LOT of work and money!

Go to www.ratguide.com - if that doesn't help, try The Dapper Rat - Google it - I don't rememeber the address. It's somewhere in the UK or Australia!

Great! Thanks Cindy. I got a little girl 2 or 3 weeks older than Suzi, but shes much shyer so it balances out. They don't even squabble or fight, ever, so I'm really amazed! This morning Suzi was sleeping on top of Liz. Aww.  [ send green star]
