Pet Rat Veterinarian of the Year Award! Part Two November 25, 2004 8:51 PM

The idea for the award came to Cindy Goehring, Boulder Rats! founder, after dozens of rat lovers in online discussion groups began sharing information about veterinarians who treat pet rats in their areas. "Rat vets are a special breed of veterinarian," says Goehring, "who are knowledgeable about, and interested in, pet rats. Even though many veterinarians will see rats, not all of them have the specific understanding and knowledge required to treat rat illnesses and injuries." Goehring explains that rats require vastly different doses of medication than pet dogs or cats, and have their own set of acute and chronic illnesses that many veterinarians are not familiar with. In addition, diagnosis is often difficult due to their small size.

Today’s pet rat owners are devoted to their pets, often willing and able to spend as much money for veterinary care as dog and cat owners. In turn, they want the best veterinary medical care available for their rats. The members of Boulder Rats! and its sister organization, Pittsburgh Rat Lovers, hope that this annual award will highlight the real need for compassionate, talented veterinarians to service this burgeoning population of beloved pets, and encourage veterinarians to expand their knowledge about rats. In addition, the publicity connected to the award may introduce rat owners who are in need of quality care for their pets to a veterinarian in their area who can provide that service.
