We are still here We are abundant and the Establishment still says no No, you can't come in here with no shoes No, you can't thrive in Peace, Love, & Understanding No, you can't share a bottle with a drunk that's lost his way
But we say Yes We Can We convert our vans And Fly our banners And conform to house slippers to go get milk
"Peace is a myth" they say "Harmony can't exsist" And yet, tell that to the lonely Establishmentarian that we touch with a smile
"There's something about him they say Though they can't quite pin it down But the smile that they needed came to them in the form of a hippie who's infiltrated
Love One Another I say and stand firm I will rebel with love and all that is inherent With foregiveness and forebearing with giving and understanding
Sky blue still exsists and purple and pink Softness and kindness abound Encouragement and tenderness Let's all get along
My pursuit in laying down these words to let you know that now Even Now We strive to share the Hippie Love and here's a bit for you
I've been a hippie since 1967,so I'm hanging out doing hippie things and not so hippie things. We have to be diverse. I was a biker chick for a while too.I've always been more than one thing at a time, maybe that's why I don't get 1/2 my projects finished till years later,my home has taken 15 years and isn't finished yet.But at least I'm not living in a cardboard box,out in the cold, bbbbbbbrrrrrrrrr makes me cold to think about it,and sorry for the ones that have to. Peace & Love, Vicki V.

I became a hippie at 15 (35 years ago ) and now, living in my *upscale* suburban home, am still one! If only my neighbours knew what went on behind our closed front door .
I still wear a peace sign around my neck, my hair is down to my waist, we listen to "our" music, and generally still live a kick-ass hippie lifestyle.
Hans, my hubby, works for a large Garden Centre, which he loves, as it affords him the opportunity to work outside and with plants. I stay at home due to problematic health, so I bake, cook, garden in summer, take care of the house, and do whatever I want to do.
I am able to be fairly active on Care2 since joining, as I have lots of time on my hands. Lots of our friends are still hippies, and I don't think we'll ever die out ~ until we really die for good.
This post probably doesn't make a lot of sense to you ~ in rereading it it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, either. But I'm still going to post it. I just wanted to let you all know that hippies are alive and well in Ontario, Canada.
Its a perennial spirit we tapped into, and it will never die. The particular form in which it was expressed in the Sixties, maybe, but not the core - there will always be the non-comformists, the visionary bohemians, who celebrate the erotic and the mystical and believe in the sacredness of all life.
What encourages me and amazes me the most are the *young* people I meet - even here, in the conservative wasteland of "Dubya" country - who embrace the hippie lifestyle. Really, it is like looking into a mirror and seeing myself, 30 years ago - and its not just the look - they totally love the music, the ethos of peace and love, and the the sacramental use of psychedelics and cannabis. Went to a concert of a Grateful Dead cover band the other night, and me and my "old lady" were the only ones over 30! Wonderful dancing with all those beautiful, bright-shining brothers and sisters - don't believe we're gone! Our love is real - not fade away!

Torrey ~ I have to agree with what you say. Hans and I have a niece, who is 24 now, and is definitely and old spirit and a true hippie. She listens to music from the 60's and 70's, shops at flea markets and second hand stores, is the kindest, most gentle person one could meet, and works with autistic children and teenagers.
She has been smoking with us for 3 years now, and her mother, my sister (who is 50 now), tried for the very first time just last summer. We didn't let on to either of them that the other had smoked with us, too. But at our birthday party in January it all came out, and there were the four of us, Hans, my sister, my niece and myself, all out in the backyard puffing away. It was so great to all come together like that.
I'm finding that a lot of her generation are like her ~ at least her friends are. And a lot of the people who work with Hans are the same. It is a joy to have them over for a visit, and really quite funny when they realize that in some cases we are older than their parents ~ they think we are so !!!! My best friend's daughters are the same, come to think of it, and they are 21 and 24. It's so nice that the values we really cared have been passed down to our children, and are now being passed down to their children.
YES WE ARE STILL HERE,YOUNG AT HEART,MAY BE NOT IN BODY ANY MORE,BUT WE STILL BELIVE IN LESS GOV,FREE LOVE AND MORE POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
GOD I LOVE THE 60'S THEY WERE GREAT IN ALL WAY'S,THE ONLY THING I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THE 60'S WAS THE WAR,I LOST A LOT OF GOOD FRIEND'S,BECAUSE OF THE GOV.AND THE RICH TRYING TO GET RICHER WITH THE COST OF US YOUNG MEN IN THE SERVICE OF OUR GOVERMENT.
THE MUSIC WAS GREAT AND ALL THE PARTYS WERE THE BEST LASTING FOR DAY ON END,WHAT CAN I SAY ,I MISS THE 60'S AND GREAT TIMES I HAD,AND MANY FRIENDS I MADE ALL OVER THIS GREAT COUNTRY OF OUR'S.
All you have to do is walk down Hawethorne in Portland, or go to Beltaine in Seattle, or hang out downtown in Bellingham...We're here...we're trying to keep up the good work so to speak.
I'm 20, hair to my hips, loathe fabric softener, love organic, trying to protest and make change in the current ragime...and if that doesn't work myself and friends are builiding an intentional community (the apGaia Tribe http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/apgaia_tribe, we're here on Care2) in order to be able to live our beliefs without fear...
Love the music, love the ideals, we call ourselves hippies with pride even when people tell us "we're to young" to be hippies. So don't worry, we're here even when it feels like all the twenty-somethings are punks or barbies...we're still here, canvasing for our state PIRG's or the Sierra Club, going barefoot whenever we can, and sometimes even dancing naked in the sun ...getting by and trying to make a difference.
I was in the haight/ashbury section of S.F. 1966 off and on till 1969. I've lived in California most of my life since 1953. I migrated with fellow hippies from S.F. to Big Sur, Laguna Beach, etc. Lived in communes,crash-houses, etc. Finally migrated to Hawaii in 70. Been to Maui and lived in Banna Patch, Big Island, Kona side.
Now in San Diego with some really great memories to warm my thoughts....
p.s. don't let the picture fool ya...who uses their own?
The hippies aretill here! February 25, 2005 3:17 PM
I was in haight/ashbury section of S.F just this December... In fact on Christmas day... Unfortunately in 1966 I was 4 so... I was too young to enjoy that moment in history but hippies still reside in Haight as well as plenty of hemp!!

Thanks Elizabeth.
Your wonderful words brightened my day.
Sometimes when I'm sitting back relaxing I find myself still on the road following the dead from town to town.
Exellent memories.

Your poetry is reminicent of so many generations of hippies. What is missing is............ the music. Woodstock, Monteray Blues festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Zig Zag Festival, Free concerts in the parks in all the major cities and towns. Protest songs, dancing in the rain, sit in demonstrations. Those were the days, so we need to keep it alive for future generations. I would love to someday hear your words put to music for all to hear. Rock on.......Love, peace & erase the hatered in our lifetime.
Since we are all together,
and we all enjoy a song,
let our love flow happily,
let our voices be just one...
Let´s all sit by the fire,
let´s bring out guitars,
let´s remember festivals,
marches,our cotton blouses...
let´s part our bread in love,
let the dawn find us,
star eyed and happy...Elizabeth.

What is truly wonderful is that there are hippies all over of all ages. It's definitely a spirit that lives on. I know people of all ages around where I live who are hippies. I also get quite a few emails from teens who manage to find my website and profess their "hippieness."
And remember, at 20 after the hour it is 420 somewhere!
I use my real picture too. This was taken last May on a trip up north.

www.rainbowfamily.org Annual rainbow festival is going to be in West Virginia/western VA this year first week of July. Its incredible. People of all walks of life and all ages gather in the thousands throughout a lush forest and camp, and drum, and dance, and sing, and are brothers and sisters of the earth together once more. The exact location is to be annouced, you can check on the festivals link to see when they announce it.
*Face In Hands* I can't believe I am listening to the Monkee's!!!!! Hello everyone and how is everyone today eh? Nice place, good people...as Emeril would say...Can You FEEL The Loooove in Here?LOL

WERE HERE as my co-actress told me last nite leaving final dress rehearsal for Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". She says, "Ron you're the epitomy of a hippie" I had my tiedye earth shirt on and I have 40's Cary Grant haircut for my part.
Was driving around town today listening to old Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. What are you listening to? Dig it. Groovy. Peace man. I'm still here too. Deborah

My name is Cassie, I'm 20 years old and I have a problem.... I'm Triple J... Janis Joplin Jr. as some of my friends at work call me and love every minute of it. I just wanted to say how goes it and I'm glad to be proud of the hippie pride group!
And by the way I thank my dad for making me hippie! He and my mom was both, mom kinda got out of it, but my dad is still hippie at heart, at 60 years old! Me and him listen to Janis and Abba many many times as we work on moms old Plymoth!
I know someone up there was talkin about living a diverse lifestyle... dont feel bad me also. First I was gothic/punk for a few years in school, then graduated and realized I really couldn't get a respect or a job for who I was because of it so that kinda died out. Then here came the hippie out of me that I always loved. And now hippie I still don't get much respect 1 because of the happiness in me (hippie) and 2 because I'm 20. But after people get to know me they really do like me, you just gotta give me a chance.
So I hope I get to know everyone here, and hope you all get to know me.
Well, this hippie is alive and well and living in Canada since 1970. I found hippie friends in Toronto, Ontario and lived there for 20 years. Did some growing up and wondered if I had lost my ideals. Then I moved to rural British Columbia and found that all the long lost hippies had all moved here too! I once again feel right at home.
great post and the ones after..like someone here said became a hippie at 15 and will be 50 (say it isn't so!) in July To all of us! Peace hugs and all good things Laurie

I would label me hippy any day of a week. Not middle-aged! Not, divorced...! Not "old"... definately HIPPY is a frame of mind - it's wonderful! I'm here!!
I consider myself a hippy if that makes any sense, though I don't like labels. I always feel like I should have been borned earlier, if that makes any sense. Sounds stupid, but I feel more at home among the flower childs, hippies, and outcasts. Society just brushed us into the dark, but we're still there. I have faith.
[send green star]
i'm definitely a hippi happa kinda fellow since i was about 11 and saw foreign hippies for the first time--making love at the beach covered with a sheet, way out there and day time, and singing at night in our community beach plaza with us kids. later on i became a punk rocker, then a gothic queen and i've been back to hippi for about 10 years. i guess i'm diverse too. how sweet life is.

felix, just because we are few and far between doesn;t mean we are in the dark, (flowerchildren, outcasts and hippies) we ARE the light!!! all else is in the dark, our hearts are full of light!!
And don't worry about labels. They are what you make of them. Hippie is a feeling, or lifestyle, not a label or stereotype.
I am a 20 year old female from Vancouver Island, BC, CANADA where being a hippie is SO widely accepted that I couldn't live anywhere but here! I've always been different, but lately I've just opened myself up to the world, and feel more at home and comfortable than a lot of people.
Just writing to let everyone know that the hippies are definitely alive and well, growing, evoliving, and spreading like crazy over here on God's Garden of Paradise!!
Come and check it out, you'll never want to leave!
Still hereand feelin groovy. Fifty five and feeling more alive than ever just knowin you all are out there erasing the hatred and spreading the love man.

I think I may have just stumbled on a visional way to end war. Yep accomplish transport with out energy and resource consumptions. No petroleum dependency, emissions, accidents, or congestion. All the while removing the greatest part of our societies exhaustive energy and resource consumptions who are taking out ecological and environmental systems.
A purely minor investment in a distributing structure will allow transport to be carried out with no energy or resource consumption. Accomplishing a cost and speed which will allow the average person to afford the time and expense to travel globally.
Funny thing though George W. Bush and company isn't interested in saving millions of lives and loosing billions of bucks.
There is something fundamentally wrong with a society when it is continually prevented from achieving a far greater level of well-being by corporate interest who want to preserve the reliability of thier investments in antiquated processes.
Any one interested in working on a conceptual view of achieving that very large change which is needed in order to accomplish that greatest potential level of social, economic, environmental and ecological well-being possible.
There is much which needs to be done and the time taken could not be more important.
Namaste, all Hippie brothers and Sisters! May 15, 2005 6:23 AM
Thankyou Donna, for the invite! I feel quite at home here, amongst my own kind.
And George, those that worship money, are quite loyal to their golden god.... we that don't, need to be active and clever in our pursuit of a more balanced and healthier pursuit of happiness. Hopefully we can find a myriad of ways to increase our numbers, and voice our agenda in the halls of popular gov't.... not that we will be taken seriously, at least not at first, but time and the steady voicing of peace and brotherhood, will eventually become a power to be reckoned with... at least that is my hope.
OM Shanti

A Child of the 50s, I trashed my bra and garter belt in the 60s, protested Vietnam, yet supported our troups in the 70s. Became a Gramma and fell in like with singer Rick Astley in the 80s, more grandchildren in the 90s, went to Stonehenge 2001 and found myself. 2005 I find myself once again protesting a needless war while supporting our troups. Two of whom are our grandchildren. A young man in Afghanistan and a young woman in Iraq. MR. BUSH, SHAME ON YOU! May all of our Burden Baskets never be full.

well i have never considered myself a heap eye, although many ppl looking at my appearance, do.
Since the advent of heap eye ism in oz trail eea, i have admired some of the philosophies of the heap eyes, but have consistently failed to see many who walk the talk.
even one girl i knew in the 60's who dropped out to nimbin, like many other dropouts of the 60's -70's still lives in the same tent she moved up there with.
and has populated this starving planet with another 10 consumers, three of whom have also started building their own breeding factories. -- all on 1 acre -- when vegetarians need about 20 acres each to bio sustainably exist -- thats 300 acres of sustainable production land that comes from where? -- love , peace, forget the rest.
So i dropped out too and have continued living on the edges of society, and have continued to bite at the edges, sometimes so much the core has collapsed. hehehe
during this time i have caused governments to conserve many thousands of hectares that would have otherwise been stripped of its native vegetation and be razed for housing, i have grown distributed and planted millions of native trees , shrubs and grasses, and havent purchased any new tools or materials for maintenance of myself or the land for years -- all is recycled or second hand.or 'donated by the government.
when i last visited the nimbin shire i was astounded at the shocking state of the environment there -- a virtual weed vista -- but lots of happy heap eyes still sitting in smoke hazes on the street benches, whilst the single parent kids hit up in the alleyway.
Having said that, i am in awe of the effect of the heap eye generations mind set in spreading the effects of lysergic way into mainstream flim, media, the arts and life -- its a better world on many spiritual levels now for many people simply because of the heap eye drive for rejection of traditional religions and the lies the church stands for. [ i still have a 60's lapel badge that says "question authority" ]
the concept of gaia would never had happened
ok -- so thats enough for a monday morning rave in the rain --
i will enjoy watching threads in this group, but not being cosmetically enjoined to my pc, there may not be many posts lol
have a kewl week, month, year -- and for your sake, and that of the future inhabitants of this planet, get active.
I believe we are still here, we are less obvious than we were 30 to0 years go. We still support our causes of no war, tree hugging, and so forth.

still here! and like so many others of 'my generation' am enjoying watching my grandchildren return to the the ideals of the 60's and 70's (my children just had to be different). love answering their questions about 'how do we stop this....' yep, lots of 'old hippies' are still around and there is a new group coming...

It's very gratifying and comforting to hear those words, Linzie. It's hard having a mindset different from others, and it's nice to hear I have other people out there whom are just like me. We all have to stick together and we won't be silenced.

The hundreds of millions of people who participated in peace protests around the world against the Iraq invasion gave me hope that there will be a better future.
Most of the world is against the illegal invasion, but there are still a lot of "Cold War and old world mentality" leaders who persist in doing the opposite of what a majority of the people want. Someday the majority will RULE, and peace will prevail.
Come on over to the Peace Think Tank and hang out... share a poem or two, spread the peace.
i am glad u all are here i was young in the 60s missed woodstock cause i was 13 saw all the news (now i have papers from woodstock but i should have left home to go as i was not far away) i read Abby Hoffman and steal this book listened to all fleetwood got high on acid (wond in a hopspital got OD) went to a community high school went , gatherings with dances that where free, went to a live city dance for the free lived in Ann arbor with & meet John Sebustion and (went to jail for one J) the RAINBOW family worked on a high school paper and owrked on the newspaper "THE SUN" moved around and came back to my home town and married a "cristian" and he left me with a baby in foster care meet another in witch i lived with and now married too with 3 sreaming girls and one grand daughter now i don't live the "style" (but as u say we live) but i allways wondered where all the "kewl " people went so i am happy at least at 47 i know that hippies are still out there

I just wanted to chime in and say that yes we are out there. I too have been told many times that I was born in the wrong time. I'd have to say that it's not true. The 60's may have been the hey-day for the hippies but we are still needed in this world now. When the world finds peace and togetherness then we can all rest but until then we must lead the lives we do and keep fighting toward peace.
It took me a while to find the hippie path but in doing so I have found many amazing free spirited souls out there. I'm so glad to see all of you here.
well alot of us were at the Rainbow festival and July 15, 2005 9:05 PM
what a great time we had!! there was such a brotherhood, peace and love were understood as we were welcomed home in the middle of a rainforest, not tropical like my memories of Brasil but still the all night drumming and chanting, the prayer circle for peace wer outstanding...I'm an old flowerchild although I don't feel very old e still conect to nature in a major way
Paz e Amor, Rose

Still here, Never Left! Although for some of us during the 60's our minds did leave periodically when we were(ahem) seeking enlightenment! I still have all my albums (yea vinyl) lol from when I was like 14 on.....! About 300 albums. Met Jim Morrison and helped pick him up from the mud in the rain...at our local Hippie gatherings on Friday nights here (Florida)
So much good times to remember, so pure of heart were we Hippies, and most of us still are. "don't ever change" was what we all promised to each other around the world...and deep down I know, we have all kept that promise. I am proud to say I brought my two ( now grown) kids up with the mindset, of Peace, Love and harmony....and they both live the life of light in their hearts as well.
Thank goodness a lot of my hippie friends still live in and around, to where we are still doing yearly gatherings. So much fun.......brings tears of joy when we do get togetgher......Thank you for this site! Will come back often
In 72, I graduated from college, a while after storming the chancellor's office (& probably getting an fbi file).
I've kept a lot of the good values from that time. Today, as I was leaving the market w/ my canvas bags, the young cashier commented on how nice it'd be for the environment if everyone did that. She was amazed when I told her that one of the bags she was looking at was from the early 70's. Imagine, how many plastic & paper bags this one bag has kept out of the landfill!...Imagine if more people took their own canvas bags to the stores (I take mine even when shopping at the mall)...
Lots of us over here, especially where I live in Suffolk. I've just spent a glorious couple of weeks living with nearly 500 other old hippies at a wonderful community event called Dance Camp East. A friend took some photos ... http://www.flickr.com/photos/seyfang/sets/342997/

Goddess Blessings and Reiki Energy, One of the best experiences I have had in a long time was to go the last Rolling Stones tour concerts. I live on a disability check now so won't be able to afford to see Mick this time around, but it was so refreshing to see all of the people that were there! Not only were there the 20 and 30 somethings with babes on their shoulders, there were teens, and the 40s and the 50s (like me), and the very best part was that the front of the open air concert was made up of people that were wheeled and walked in from nursing homes! What an absolute delight. And to imagine, I was afraid when I was younger that one day I was going to wake up and no longer like pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers....and even worse, my most dreaded fear was that I would be a Republican and actually WANT to listen to Lawrence Welk!!!! Thank the Goddess none of that has happened! Your Sister in Love and Peace - Donna

believe it or not, still wearing my pow/mia bracelet from '69; hippies will never go away...it's a state of mind, a set of beliefs and values, whatever...anyway, if you've ever been there, you'll never really leave. you might have to make adjustments here and there to survive, but your heart always comes back to those core values of love, peace and truth for all...

just wanted to add that i, too, use my real photo on this website, no matter how good/bad i look...it's on my profile...so, jb, what's there to hide? this is a site of like-minded people with lots in common...relax and share...
hippie turned disco queen back to spiritual hippie
Where are all the hippies, we are still here, carrying forwards still changing the world and it's cares.
Many bands come to mind & still have, Blind Faith, Cream, Ten Years After, Hendrix, Beatles, Stones, White Bird Is Flying , Cat Stevens, Crosby Stills & Nash, Ram Dass!!..... Creedance Clearwater, Morrison (oops sorry the Doors) , Joplin (Miss Pearl) saw her live, and didn't make it to Woodstock but make it to Stawberry Fields Jethro Tull, Iron Butterfly, some great memories....... and a few not so great, lol. If I had known that a persons frontal brain is still maturing until you are 25 I would not have done so much acid, good old electric koolaid, or maybe I would have, we were young and indestructable, or so we thought until are own 1 by 1, sucummed.
yes I know Ram Dass was not/is not a band and still have his 1st book BE HERE NOW. He need's help now, if any of you can, go to Wayne Dyers site

New to the group October 27, 2005 7:31 AM
I'm new to the group and wanted to say Hi to all.
Being born at the end of the 60's, most would assume that I am in the in between hippie years. That is what I thought for quite some time also. But I have found out differently.
When I started planning to open my store I thought I had a vision of how I wanted it to be and look. Well, it didn't exactly turn out the way I planned. It turned out way better.
I for one am still here!!!! October 29, 2005 9:01 AM
HI all, I am still here back where I started life in the hills of Pennsylvania. It all started with MaMa Cass and "California Dreaming", a week after I bought the 8 track, I was on my way to southern California.. Take care all, Ed
[send green star]
everyone around me calls me a hippie, so that must mean something. my brother says, "why do you have to dress like that?" his son says, "oh my lord, she's wearing tyedye again, why do you always have to wear tyedye?" i'm proud to be a hippie mom, hippie crocheter, hippy daughter, hippy native american sister...my long haired 21 month old is going to be a hippie too. he looks so adorable in tyedye, and he has his trusty granny square afghan. love and peace! thank you so much for this groovy club. oh, i try to tell my family, hippie is not how you dress, it's a way of life, a philosophy...d'uh, yes, it is!
I AM AN UNREPENTANT HIPPIE-YIPPIE FLOWER CHILD DIRECT FROM THE 60'S...I USED TO HELP FOCALIZE THE GRIFFITH PARK LOVE-INS IN LA WHILE WORKING W/GREEN POWER..WE FED THE STREET FREEX AND WE HAD A FREE STORE IN VENICE BEACH..... SOON I CAME EAST TO JOIN THE YIPPIES AND THE RAINBOW FAMILY.....
I used to do Tie Dye a few years back. I was known as the Tie Dye Lady. People used to come knockin on my door when I hung out a fresh batch to dry on my lanai. It was like they smelled pie and were attracted to it from all over the neighborhood only it was visual pie.
Do you Tie Dye your crochet work?
Yr right, Hippie is a state of mind tho, its our spirit whether we dress the "part" or not.
I am so honored to have you as a member here (and on Protest Songs!).
Your reputation precedes you. You are a LEGEND in your own time. Not many can say that!
Your website has always been de rigueur for the anti-Fascist, Pot Legalization Movement. I`ve spent hours upon hours there and highly recommend others visit right away if they have not already done so.
We have a few Fascists that have infiltrated Care2 as members. They could use a pie in the face. But we have to settle for virtual ones here.

Hippie in Dixie December 05, 2005 7:46 AM
Just wanted to say high to the group. This hippie is currently in Alabama. Not a real good place for an 'old native american hippie nudist pagan' - LOL. Was traveling the world from 1974-1978 thanks to Uncle Sam and settled down in Hawaii (Oahu) until 1986. Got to love the Kona Gold, Maui Wowwie - LOL. But after living in 43 different countries there is no place like home - USA.
I was just thinking of you, dude. I haven't seen you since you were at the Limelight in NYC with Abbie. Man, I didn't realize you were a weiner dog lover too. I miss the Make a Point, Bring a Joint demonstrations in Central Park! You don't remember me but I was the gf of one of the Yippies arrested in KC back in the day. The guy I dated used to play bass for David Peel and Death (yep, Banana Dave). Far out.

There were hippies over at Janfest 2005 on Sat (birthday party for our beloved BluntMan). We made signs and passed 6 ft doobs. There was lots of hair, Beatles, singing, poleroids.

Universal Soldier by Donovan December 22, 2005 3:49 PM
He's five foot-two, and he's six feet-four, He fights with missiles and with spears. He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen, Been a soldier for a thousand years.
He'a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain, A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew. And he knows he shouldn't kill, And he knows he always will, Kill you for me my friend and me for you.
And he's fighting for Canada, He's fighting for France, He's fighting for the USA, And he's fighting for the Russians, And he's fighting for Japan, And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.
And he's fighting for Democracy, He's fighting for the Reds, He says it's for the peace of all. He's the one who must decide, Who's to live and who's to die, And he never sees the writing on the wall.
But without him, How would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone, He's the one who gives his body As a weapon of the war, And without him all this killing can't go on.
He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame, His orders come from far away no more, They come from here and there and you and me, And brothers can't you see, This is not the way we put the end to war.
Hi all...I'm new here!! 1st of all, HAPPY 2006!!!!
I'm from Australia..yes, the land of one of the biggest hippies ever known: Daevid Allen (Gong and Mother Gong...hippie bands and communities!!). I must say that I was born in '58 when the whole rebellion thing started and I was only 10 or 11 in the late '60s, but my heart flew naturally to the 'rebel' side of the barricades!! I really believed in the whole hippie and psychedelic trip!!
My point?! Pls don't get me wrong....but yes, where did the hippies go? Some of them are still here in heart and soul, but SIGH, many of them turned their backs to the Cause by becoming yuppies!! My rhetoric question: are we REALLY sure that all the "hippies" wanted to fight the Establishment....to really knock down the "walls" or were most of them really trying to get INTO the Establishment. Some examples? Bill Gates, Sonny Bono, Cher, etc.!!!!
YOU BE THE JUDGE!!
Robert...PEACE AND HAPPY TRAILS TO ALL!!!!

welcome robert, always wonderful to get to know another hippie.
i am fortunate to live near a city that is still a home to many old and young hippies, austin tx. city motto is 'keep austin weird'. food coops, vegatarian restaruants, political slogans spray painted on buildings. lots of bicycle riders and environmentalist. as well as the long hair and clothes. going to guadalupe street is like stepping back in time 35 years. while many got side tracked in the mid 70's by drugs or just everyday life of raising families and starting businesses i see many of us finding our way back now to the ideals and dreams we had so long ago. but we did make a big impact in our day. we helped end a war, marchs that led to many civil rights changes, created many social services, brought environmental issues to the forefront of politics. hopefully we can unite as we did then and remind our government and the world of what is still important.
This thread rocks! Love the poems, pics, and discussion! I'm a 28 year old hippie (and proud of it!) from Fort Wayne, IN. Many of my friends are hippies too- we are alive and well, even in the conservative midwest! At this moment, I'm listening to Cat Stevens' Peace Train and wearing my waistlength hair in 2 braids under a green doo-rag. Peace and love to everyone! Let's spread it to the rest of the world!
Glad to be here ,still looking for Alices Resturant may be I'll find it one day ,but in the mean time I will just sit around in some of my country

We're still out here and some of us even live in the suburbs now. I never thought I would but I do due to an unbelievable apartment and very cheap rent. I still hold down all my hippie values and am involved in many groups mainly animal rights and environmental and a few others. I about as far left as you can get. So we're out here some in communities and others just spread amongst all the other folks. Yeah Hippies! In Peace, Deborah

I was a hippie since I was born May 07, 2006 1:43 PM
1. One of my first grade notebooks reads, in messy pencil writing "I hate the authorities!"
2. I was always an outcast
3. I hate war, racism, unfairness, injustice.....
4. I have been to numerous peace and human rights protests
5. I had my picture taken with Cindy Sheehan (april 29, NYC)
6. I am somewhat acquainted with Yippie Party co-founder, Dana Beal (he gave me some marijuana legalization posters) and he is on my email address list
7. The cops put my name in the local books for tresspassing at a school when I was trying to hang up signs for the pot-legalization rally I was organizing (they called it an inappropriate topic for a highschool). Next time, I get arrested.
8. I wear flowers in my hair.
9. I own classic rock CD's
10. I believe in anti-war principles, legalize pot, equality, gay rights, down with huge corporations....
11. I always got in trouble at school for questioning the authorities (which I don't believe in!!)
happily hippie in Michigan --and the world May 07, 2006 2:06 PM
So I am just reading through this post...but the poem at the beginning is the only thing I can take in fully right now. It's beautiful And the posts it generated are amazing... I'm so happy to know you're all out there. I'm glad I found this group! Peace to you each, Kathleen

Loved singing 'Imagine' as one of my songs in a Karaoke Competition, last Friday. Made to the finals, on Friday, the thirteenth (13). Also, by that time, my CD of original music should be ready, as well. Love & Peace to ALL.
I was so very elated to find this site via my friend Lizzzie so hugs to you Lizzzie. I may only be 44 but I have been a hippie since I was a small child, mindset and all, have always been a nonconformist, and wouldn't eat meat haha, drove my parents nuts (lol). Ever since I saw my first hippie and I was about 4, I had an instant connection to what they were all about; peace & love, flower power and being kind, and it shaped me to who I am today.
My first Grateful Dead Show was the clincher though. All my life I had been searching and living a peaceful, pretty groovy lifesyle....I was very natural, into organics and was and still am a vegetarian,
but I had been working at our local city arena and The Dead were to play for 2 magical nites and thinking back on it now OMG I got to see them for FREE!! ...When the doors opened I could not believe my eyes?
The people that flooded into the corridors and restrooms and the seating area blew my mind... AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY OF HIPPIES!!! 25,000 of them!!
They were so cool and well mannered, the music was totally groovy, the spirit and aura of the nite was so happening and peaceful, the vibe so real! After that nite I rushed home and told my husband "you wouldn't believe what and who were at the coliseum this evening?" he asked who I said The Grateful Dead and he said "really I didn't think they were still around"
I said baby they are still around and they were smokin tonite!!
Well needless to say my life changed from that night on. I got connected through the grapevine and then took my 3 kids and my husband the next year to see the Dead and we were hooked, My husband and I followed them until Jerry's untimely demise...
What A Long Strange Trip Its Been ? But I wouldn't have it any other way. Perhaps my story isn't all that amazing to you but it is my story and it is how I became one with the hippie culture even though I was hip to it at such an early age!! And I am ever so glad to be here and connected to y'all today. So I am so happy to be here
Peace, love, and light
Mary-Ann B...I am also known on the internet as Sunshinedaydream
GROOVY! Still here, power! this is my rendition of the circular rainbow over the prayer circle at the 1988 Rainbow
gathering of the tribes in Texas, inthe Angelina NationaL forest in the East Texas piney woods. The rare circular rainbow happened at at exactly 12 noon as we broke the traditional 12 hour silence leading up to noon on July 4th. This really happened, hundreds of people saw it , trippin' and non trippin'! Hold your heads high, Hippies!

Speaking for myself, this hippie hasn't gone anywhere! Holding the true faith since 1968, same as it ever was!
You're damned right I will, George!!

This hippie went to see Arlo Guthrie earlier this month and the Whitney Museum's retrospective on the "Summer of Love." I'm still here! "You can get anything you want from Alice's Restaurant."
Still here....after all these years. September 05, 2007 10:13 AM
Whoo hooo...yep...just checked...and I am still here after all these years. Burned the bra too, hippie chic to the core. My son came out hippie. He couldn't help it. We have experienced a lot together, including a trip across country, and the Rainbow Gathering. Us ole hippies will NEVER EVER DIE, we won't just fade away....and nor will our beliefs!!!! I sure am glad I have my GOOD morals!!!!
Peace Out, Love and Light.... SummerDaze on the NC Coast
HI JIM AND VANESSA.... I've never been to Piccadilly Hill or Nimbin. There's a Piccadilly in Sydney of course..! Oh yeah, Perth...I was in Fremantle last week visiting Bon Scott's grave...so sad, RIP Bon...we all love you and AC/DC.
When I came back from Viet-Nam I marched on Washington.
I'm 60 now and a bit slower, but I won't stop marching until we stop killing people for our ''King George's'' and their greed for Tea , Slaves and Taxes.
I DIG that SOnS AND DAUGTHERS type talk there man......I strongly BELIEVE we gotta get that spirit back.....straight away....lest we forget!!

This thread has been so great to read! I love knowing you're all here. I was born in 1970 to VERY straight parents so I sorta had to find my hippiness all on my own when I was a teenager in the 80s. Sometimes it's not easy being me in such a non-hip world. I'm in a suburban home and I have a very professional job, but I find little, subtle ways to "Let My Freak-Flag Fly" every day. Anyway, good to be with all you beautiful people! Love and peace...
[send green star]
I know I grew up very unconventional - it was fun and interesting. I remember my mom and her boyfriend were growing pot on the roof our beach house and ended up getting arrested and none of my friends parents would let them play with me.
It's not easy to have a free lifestyle these days or even to let your kids be free - too much corruption, over crowding, too many people with perverted motives, selfish motives, traffic, etc.. I would love to live on a farm where everyone could just run around, eat off the land, not go to conventional school but learn from home, no conventional jobs but be self suficient just doing enjoyable things and working in the home and yard etc.
I have witnessed teen & adult students who made it on to Honor Rolls because pot help their focus, their creative thinking, & their initiative, et al. Plus, kids -born to pot smokers- who are obviously intelligent, creative, & artistic, virtually from birth!!!
We are still here fighting for PEACE and respect to our fellow man January 23, 2008 4:06 PM
Being a Hippie is a state of mind, A belief that all men and people of the world have a right to live in PEACE and Harmoney, That loving and caring about the man next to you and putting out a helping hand is the right thing to do. We all realized back in the sixties that it was time that our generation stud up and made a stand. We told our government that the Vietnam War must end. That Peace is prefered over war.Our generation could prove that by just treating each other with respect and kindness that the world could be a better place.
I am 60 years old and from the time I came back from Vietnam got out in the streets an marched. We as a generation did this to save our country. We got beaten and in alot of cases we where thrown in Jail. Yet we keep going until that War ended. Today our Generation the ones that didnt sell out are still out their Marching, talking to the younger generation the Iraq generation. We must use all of our experience to teach these kids what is right and wrong. Their are thank GOD alot of these kids who are bright enough to see the writting on the wall. Like we said in the sixties to our then war like Government UP AGAINST THE WALL MOTHER F--KER.
I believe we are out their alive and well and will continue to fight on to see our dream come ture, Imagine all the people living in a world of PEACE
I know this is 3 years old but strangely I made this same type of topic at another forum I visit after watching the woodstock video.
My entry in my thread:
Woodstock (1969)
I
recommend this to everyone who either loves rock or just music in
general. This "movie" shows you the building of Woodstock, people's
opinions/thoughts, and most performances. I'm only 40 minutes into this
movie (which looks to be about 4 hours) and I'm amazed.
The artists and people are mind blowing. You see the artists mingling
and walking around in the open fields and no one bothers them for
autographs, they're laughing and smiling and talking to strangers.
There's no jewelry and name brand designers draped around them, they
made their own style. And their personality's are admirable. They don't
care about fame or fortune. You can tell they put everything into their
music, their soul and strength. They wrote songs for people to sit and
listen to and contemplate on issues. And it's awesome how the audience
actually does listen! The fans don't scream at the top of their lungs
during the music, they wait patiently until a song is over.
And the people .
Oh my, everyone was a natural beauty. I don't know if it was their
personality that came through, but practically every man and woman is
beautiful no matter what age or race they were. And it wasn't just
hippies. They showed the "preps" of the 60's, nuns, mothers, etc. The
acceptance from the community was amazing as well. I still don't get
where all the hippies went though? There were so many and I don't get
why they stopped being that way. Was it a "phase", did they realize
they had to conform and grew older and bitter, or did they just give up
on the mentality and the chance for peace? Or was it all the drugs? :/
I'm honestly jealous of this time period! Could you imagine a music
festival today that would spend $2 million+ for everyone to just get in
free? I don't think so! Money is everything today and it's sickening.
I'll even use Zeppelin's last concert as a source for this, they could
have made it an event for every fan to attend but they didn't.
One more hippie, one less communist. July 13, 2008 12:37 PM
Này, Ê! (hey, friend! in vetnamese ) I am but thirteen years old, and living in a house with a father whom I call a routinist.. he's got his every day written down, and believes that in order to be successful, you need money and power. I was slowly slipping into his 'trap', when I realized there are already too many of those people... so, I became one who believed strongly in floccinaucinihilipilification... this, at first was fabulous, except for the fact that my family began to drift from me. Of course, family is most important, because they teach you love, no matter what form it's in. After about a year, I realized I needed to change. Now, I am a happy hippie, much for animal rights, peace, love, freedom, and understanding. My hair is very close to my waist, a few more inches and I'll be there. My father is starting to understand, and he's no longer the 'routinist'.. he's my best friend, and he has taught me so much. Not to mention, my mother was an amazing person, and taught me almost everything I know. Sadly, this amazing woman passed on June 20th, 2005.
Sarah Butterfly, You're only 13? How did you become so wise? Maybe your good parents helped you?
Re. rainbows: yes, we have circular ones here in Saskatchewan: but they are not regular rainbows - they are extensions of sundogs. They are sundogs that got so big they grew together!
The weirdest thing I ever saw was a rainbow arc that crossed another rainbow arc. And it wasn't even raining!!!!
so glad I found this group. I'm 15, and am really into trying to live a hippie lifestyle . I'm really into the environment, some of my friends call this site imahappytreehugger.com......yeah, sometimes i think they just don't appreciate the world . Anyway, really inspired by hippies and those poems were so class, btw
The world so desperately needs us now! It's excellent to see some neo-hippies, especially if they go beyond the fashion statement and get into the hippie spirit.
We are at concerts, festivals, hempfests, Bobby and Phil shows to name a few.
We are a small hippie family that is starting our website. Currently we are looking for input and feedback from fellow hippies. We are offering free shipping for our grand opening. Please check it out: sewmanycolors.com. Also please use this code: hippie and you'll receive a 15% discount. Thanks!! PEACE AND 420
establishment has taken our streets and parks away so we can't dance and laugh in them anymore.
they have been taken over by stresssed out buisness people who dont take the time to appreciate the trees and colors around them.
they say we must conform and act like everyone else who is trapped inside of themselves, not knowing who they are and screming to get out of the mainstream.
but look around and you will see a bright arrangement of colors out of the corner of your eye, or maybe youll see a long skirt flowing with a rythm, you will even hear a guitar strumming in the background.
because we are here, refusing to conform, living the ways we were taught by our parents, or learned in the generation itself.
where did all of the hippies go??? December 09, 2008 12:17 PM
Did they melt, like the last spring snow??? Did the party grow cold, as the Hippies grew old??? Nixon came and went, Vietnam, we just quit!!! Woodstock, was a dream, that became a capitalistic scheem!!! Even though we were right, we've forgotten how to fight!!! We bought into their lies, and hung up our tied dyes!!! They flipped the disco switch, and money became our bitch!!! Instead of peeing in a bottle, we snorted up our smiles!!! We allowed the law, to wage war against the unchanged/ non-conformed, and did nothing when they were taken away in chains!!! The 70's became a thing of the past, until our children, found our tied dyes, peace signs, and our stash!!!
I love this If I was only born in the 60's or 70's maybe my family would be okay with the fact that I loved the hippie lifestyle and music.
To be happy with people caring and they surround you each and every day that is a dream. Especially since while you are with them your helping the earth and not having to care how you look in front of others.
