Petition applauding Diversity Commercials

Here is a forcechange PETITION commending Honey Maid for its commercials showcasing Diversity of Families as "wholesome":

.

http://forcechange.com/115817/applaud-food-company-for-celebrating-diversity-in-its-ads/#gf_17

.
.
The Times They Are A'Changin'

'Several conservative groups attacked the ad which depicts diverse, modern households including military, interracial, single parent, same-sex parent and punk rock-loving families. One person called it “disgusting” that such families would be described as wholesome. Honey Maid knew the ad would be controversial yet the company received more than ten times more positive feedback than it did critical comments. A follow up video released by Honey Maid shows artists transforming the hateful messages into a statement of love.

.

Advertisers are beginning to portray diversity with a greater depth showing that times are slowly changing. Honey Maid’s ad may be just a commercial but many have hailed it as the most progressive yet. Applaud Honey Maid both for showcasing diverse families in its ad and for responding so maturely to people who still view gay and interracial couples with disdain.'

Urgent Action to Save LGBTQI Runaway/Homeless Youth Shelters
6 years ago

Hello, everyone,

An online international petition has been organised to raise awareness of the need for LGBTQI runaway and homeless youth shelters and services. The petition focuses on the action to reinstate funding recently and unconscionably denied by city government to LGBTQI youth shelters across the board in New York City, a decision which spells disaster for these vital community-initiated programmes and the thousands of young people they support. The prospects for homeless gender variant and queer teens sleeping rough are often grim. General city shelters are not an option. All of us who work in the sector know that such places are extremely dangerous for vulnerable lgbtqi runaway and homeless youth.

Please join us in signing this petition individually and organisationally, and share it with friends, constituents, and affiliated organisations. Also, feel free to post the link on your websites, facebook pages, etc. Perhaps by joining in this international call, we will continue to inspire our own communities, cities and countries to create shelters and adequate services for our destitute lgbtqi children, teens and young adults. They are worth our best efforts, locally and globally. New York is setting a dangerous precedent for cities throughout the world to follow in this time of economic downturn. Together, we can speak with a clear international voice that our LGBTQI vulnerable youth are not expendable or peripheral.

"Every night in New York at least 8,000 kids call the streets home. Of those children, at least 35-40% are lgbtqi identified, another 10% indicate gender diversity. Sylvia's Place and Homeless Youth Services at MCCNY is the emergency shelter for Queer kids off the street. The elimination of funding by DYCD and the refusal to site any reason or allow the City Council access to the awards process is unconcionable. The kids we serve will be lost to the streets again. They will lose the roof over their heads, the food sustaining them, the supportive services that keep them alive and often out of jail or worse. We are marshalling global support for the work of Homeless Youth Services at MCCNY because we believe we are global citizens and the youth we serve represent the future for all of us. Throw them away, and you throw our very humanity away," writes Pat Bumgardner of Sylvia's Place and MCCNY Homeless Youth Services.

Please take a moment and help.

From HRC: Tell LDS to prove they're "not anti-gay"

I think HRC may be optimistic with this one, but anyway it's worth a try.

Mormon leaders say they're not
against civil unions and other
equality laws – just marriage for
same-sex couples.

Now they can prove it.

Ask the LDS Church to support
LGBT rights legislation in Utah.

Dear Olivia,

When leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) took a prominent role in ending marriage equality in California, I felt compelled to act.

As a gay resident of Utah who grew up in a conservative Mormon family, I have seen the LDS Church divide the community and even families every day. I became active in and donated a million dollars to the "No on 8" campaign to help spread the truth in the face of a deceptive campaign funded largely by members of the LDS Church.

I'm writing you today because LDS (Mormon) leaders have been trying to deflect criticism by insisting that they're not "anti-gay" or opposed to civil unions, domestic partnerships and other LGBT rights – just marriage equality.

Join HRC and Equality Utah in taking them at their word – and giving them a chance to prove it.

HRC has sent an open letter to President Thomas Monson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, asking him to sign on to Equality Utah's "Common Ground Initiative". They have yet to respond.

If Mormon leaders really aren't "anti-gay," then they should have no problem publicly signing on to these five bills, which include:

  • Providing domestic partnership rights and responsibilities for same-sex couples;
  • Adding sexual orientation and gender identity to Utah's anti-discrimination laws for employment, housing, and health care;
  • Giving domestic partners of public employees insurance and retirement benefits;
  • Giving domestic partners access to the courts if their loved one is killed because of negligence or malpractice; and
  • Repealing the second clause of Utah's Anti-Marriage Amendment which is used to prevent gay and lesbian couples from receiving any kind of relationship recognition in the state.

United States Petition to Sen. Obama

I saw this elsewhere and am crossposting since I support Obama and am interested in his answer....

Action Alert LGBT Community – Please Read & Sign

Please Answer the Question, Senator Obama

The Philadelphia Gay News and the Same Love, Same Rights® Campaign urge Senator Barack Obama to take a stance with regard to the issues directly affecting the LGBT community.  It is imperative that voters understand the views of each presidential candidate, as additional states throughout the nation hold their primary elections.  It is our right, as voters, to be made aware of the objectives of our next President with regard to all the issues, including those pertinent to the LGBT minority.

The LGBT minority in America is over 19 million strong, and to date we have little clarity about the intentions of Senator Obama concerning our interests. Since April 14, 2008, the Philadelphia Gay News has posed direct questions to both Democratic candidates; Senator Obama is the only one who has declined to respond.

At this time, the Philadelphia Gay News, the Same Love, Same Rights® Campaign, along with those citizens listed below, urge Senator Obama to answer simply one question, to allow us as voters to better understand his position with regard to the LGBT minority in Pennsylvania and throughout America.

Mr. Obama,

“How would you advise Pennsylvania Democrat State Senators to vote on The Anti Gay Marriage Legislation before them NOW. You're running to be leader of the party. We're asking for your leadership. Please answer this ONE question for the LGBT community so we have some understanding of your commitment.”

Visit www.SameLoveSameRights.com to sign the petition

Tell Congress ALL Families Matter

Michael Guest, a well-respected and committed public servant, had risen to a top position in the Foreign Service. The first openly gay American to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate as an overseas Ambassador, Guest left his prestigious post – and the career he loved – because of the State Department's second-class treatment of his partner.

Our nation has lost countless talented public servants like Michael because it doesn't give their same-sex partners equal benefits and protections.

But there's a bill in Congress that would help our government catch up to the private sector – and make sure GLBT Americans can serve their country proudly, at home and abroad.

http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/campaign/fed_dp_benefits/

For Michael Guest, it wasn't just the basic indignities, like the government's insistence that he and his partner pack for Romania in separate suitcases. The discrimination he experienced extended to graver matters: even in the immediate wake of 9/11, Guest's partner was unable to receive security training (to know how to recognize a terrorist threat or intelligence trap). Nor was he entitled to evacuation in the event of hostilities.

Upon his retirement from the Foreign Service in December, Michael lamented being forced to choose between his family and service to his country. "That anyone should have to make that choice," he said, "is a stain on...[our] leadership and a shame for this institution and our country."

Erasing that stain would be both the right thing and the smart thing to do. Nearly 10,000 private companies, including more than half of the Fortune 500, offer benefits to their employees' domestic partners. Because they know that it helps them compete for the most talented and qualified employees.

The business community gets it; why doesn't our government?

Tell your elected leaders that patriotic GLBT Americans demand no more for their families than the basic benefits and protections afforded to different-sex spouses.

http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/campaign/fed_dp_benefits/

Your Members of Congress are federal employees too. Ask them if it would be fair if their families couldn't get basic benefits and protections.

Congress will respond once there is a groundswell of support. So spread the word. Tell your friends about this critically important bill, and ask them to join you in the fight for domestic partnership rights.

Morocco: Protect Rights to Privacy and Fair Trial

Petition Calls for Repeal of Repressive Law

(New York, February 26, 2008) – The Moroccan government should protect the rights to privacy and a fair trial, Human Rights Watch and the Moroccan Human Rights Association said today. Human Rights Watch and the Moroccan Human Rights Association called on the government to repeal a law that provides prison terms for consensual homosexual acts, and launched a petition demanding that the government repeal article 489 of the penal code. They also demanded the release of the six men currently imprisoned under this article.

Police arrested the men in November 2007, after a video was circulated on the internet showing a private party in Ksar el-Kbir, a town between Rabat and Tangiers. The prosecution produced no evidence at trial that the defendants had violated Article 489, which provides prison terms for persons who commit “lewd or unnatural acts with an individual of the same sex.” The men all denied the charges. On December 10, after demonstrators marched through the town demanding that the men be punished, a court in Ksar el-Kbir sentenced them to between four and 10 months in prison. A Tangiers appeal court on January 15 upheld their conviction but reduced their sentences slightly.

“This trial shows how an unjust law can be used to violate the basic right to privacy and fuel social prejudice,” said Joe Stork, director of Human Rights Watch’s Middle East and North Africa division.

The Moroccan Human Rights Association and Human Rights Watch invite people from anywhere in the world to sign the petition by emailing petitionmaroc@hrw.org with their name and country of origin, or by visiting http://hrw.org/english/docs/2008/02/15/morocc18076.htm. The petition will eventually be presented to the Moroccan government but names will not otherwise be made public.

“When a trial is as unfair as this one, people should protest to the authorities,” added Khadija Ryadi, president of the Moroccan Human Rights Association. “Beliefs may differ, but everyone shares the desire for justice.”

Petition for the lives of Hamzeh and Loghman
7 years ago
http://www.petitiononline.com/irangay/petition.html

Petition for the lives of Hamzeh and Loghman: two young gay men who are in love and who risk the death sentence in Iran. And let's not forget Pegah: the United Kingdom could still hand her over to the executioner.

by EveryOne Group (www.everyonegroup.com)

The Islamic Republic of Iran is persecuting homosexuals, dissidents and free thinkers, and carrying out political crimes towards them.

Homosexual relationships in Iran are considered a crime liable to sadistic corporal punishment and the death sentence. On January 23rd, 2008, Hamzeh Chavi and Loghman Hamzehpour, two homosexual young men of 18 and 19, were arrested in Sardasht, in Iranian Azerbaijan. The authorities use physical and psychological torture to obtain confessions from people who fall into their hands, and the two young men admitted to being in love and having a relationship. Their confession was enough for the Islamic court to commit them to trial with two very serious charges: Mohareb, the crime of those who are "enemies of Allah" and Lavat, sodomy. Iranian criminal law envisages the gallows for homosexuals, who are considered "enemies of Allah".
Nevertheless, there are many moderate political and religious figures in Iran who would like to change things and prevent the loss of so many innocent lives. The majority of Iranians are against the horrors of capital punishment through hanging and stoning; only a few extremists believe torture and flogging are admissible methods. The clandestine human rights movements are fighting heroically against these barbaric practices, risking their own lives in an effort to build a better Iran, a country in which minorities are respected and human life becomes a value once more. Thousands of Muslims believe Allah is a God of love, that the death sentences and brutal corporal punishment are crimes against humanity. On December 5th, 2007 an innocent Iranian boy was martyred by the Teheran regime and then murdered on the scaffold. From all over the world, in answer to the campaign for the life of Makwan Moloudzadeh - promoted by EveryOne Group - thousands of Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and non-believers sent red and white flowers to President Ahmadinejad and the Iranian judges: red, in an attempt to avoid the spilling of innocent blood; white to implore his executioners to spare the life of yet another blameless condemned man. This vast international campaign served only to delay an execution which had already been decided.

Today Makwan is the symbol of the martyrdom of the many innocent victims of a ruthless regime. Let us also remember Pegah Emambakhsh, the Iranian lesbian woman who is still waiting for the result of her appeal in the United Kingdom, and who risks being deported to Iran, where torture and stoning await her. EveryOne has received worrying news from the United Kingdom, where the Court of Appeal does not appear inclined to grant Pegah political asylum - in defiance of all the international conventions. Pegah is crushed by the attitude of the British Government and has told us she is tired of fighting, she is reluctant to appear in the newspapers and no longer believes in what Anne Frank defined as "man's inner goodness". We must respect Pegah's wishes, but we have to be ready to say no to the ritish Government, which has abandoned the path of respect for the rights of women, homosexuals and refugees. We have to be ready to raise a chorus of protest, throughout the world, in order to stop the hand of the executioner and his accomplices.

That is why we are asking you to devote a few minutes of your time to this petition;

Release 11 in Cameroon charged with homosexuality
7 years ago
http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/siteapps/advocacy/index.aspx?c=jhKPIXPCIoE&b=2590179&template=x.ascx&action=9726

Eleven men were arrested and detained in Cameroon between 19th July and 1st September 2007 on suspicion of engaging in homosexual acts.

The 11 men were arrested in the cities of Douala and Yaoundé where they remain in custody. Three of the men were sentenced to six months hard labor in January 2008. Consensual homosexual conduct between adults is illegal in Cameroon, and Amnesty International is concerned about the ongoing persecution of Cameroonian men and women for their real or suspected homosexuality.

Amnesty International considers the 11 men to be prisoners of conscience, detained solely on account of their presumed sexual orientation, and is calling for their immediate and unconditional release. AI is also calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality in Cameroon.

Care2.com gender boxes
This is not a petition. I recently posted this at the Care2 Feedback and Suggestions group. Anyone else who agrees or has an opinion on this topic should check there to see when it's approved and posted, and make a comment on it. Thanks! Gender options 12:30 PM The gender options on Care2 are incredibly limited. Care2 includes a number of groups consisting of people who do not fit into "male" or "female", as well as wider LGBT groups and (like everywhere on earth) many intersex and transgender individuals. I understand that there are some parts of the site (like petitions) where other government officials require gender titles to be included in a person's info., but usually those need to be filled in every time, anyway. So I don't understand why gender is a required field at all in the profile sections. In order to be truly inclusive of all human beings, who have an incredibly wide range of physical and psychological genders, I'd really like to see Care2 offer a third gender option of "other" (with perhaps a blank to fill in), and/or make the gender field optional. Thanks for considering this, James

Urgent Action Alert for GLBT Community!!

Action Alert from RainbowWeddingNetwork.com…Sign the pledge to support Basic Rights Oregon!
We applaud the passing of Oregon’s House Bill 2007, The Family Fairness Act; domestic partnerships will offer Oregon GLBTQ families needed benefits & security. The Family Fairness Act was signed into law to be effective as of January 2, 2008. Unfortunately, out-of-state conservative organizations such as Arizona’s Alliance Defense Fund are attempting to overthrow the legislative process by drawing invalid signatures into question. Currently Domestic Partnerships have been placed on a “temporary restraining order” that has delayed the implementation of Domestic Partnerships for the citizens of Oregon.
www.RainbowWeddingNetwork.com and The Same Love Same Rights® organization are committed to educating and energizing the community throughout the nation, to motivate involvement in issues concerning equal rights in marriage. By signing this pledge we are sending a message to conservative organizations that the GLBTQ community is watching and that we will work together to stop their attacks against us. And we are sending our thoughts in solidarity to our GLBTQ brothers and sisters of Oregon that they are not alone and that we stand with them in support!
Please add your name to this pledge and most importantly forward this information to all your friends and take a moment to add this link to your myspace page. We must inform the GLBTQ community about the situation in Oregon so that this list shows vast support – the fact that a legitimate law has been put on hold for these reasons is an atrocity, and we must take immediate action. Our goal is to accumulate no less than 500 virtual signatures, as well as no less than 500 dollars. Help us reach these attainable and important goals by the Basic Rights Oregon rally on January 30th!

Hey guys, in order to keep things a little coherent, we are going to try this.  Post any petitions regarding GLBT Global issues in this thread, it will be pinned.  This way we can keep track of them all in one place for those of us who do the petition thing!  Bless, Scott
