Cancer in Sea Lions During the 1960s and 1970s, persistent organic pollutants were dumped in Californias coastal waters, where they bio-accumulated through the food chain. Twenty years later, people started noticing dead and stranded California sea lions. When examined, 20 percent of the sea lions were found to have cancer of the urinary and genital tracts and toxic chemicals in their blubber that had accumulated through the anchovies, squid, salmon and mussels they ate.
Cancer in Dogs A study of more than 8,000 dogs showed that canine bladder cancer was associated with their living in industrialized counties, mimicking the distribution of bladder cancer among humans. Between 1975 and 1995 the incidence of bladder cancer in dogs examined at veterinary teaching schools in North America increased six-fold. Scottish terriers, Shetland sheepdogs, wirehaired fox terriers and West Highland white terriers had a higher risk than mixed breeds, suggesting a genetic susceptibility to cancer among the terriers, but not a reason for the increase.
When the researchers interviewed the owners of Scottish terriers with bladder cancer, they found that dogs whose owners had used phenoxy acid herbicides on their lawns were 4 to 7 times more likely to have cancer than dogs whose owners had not. 6 Phenoxy acid is an active ingredient in 2,4-D, a widely used herbicide that has been linked to cancers, neurological impairment and reproductive problems.
The cancer in dogs studies reveal the multifactorial nature of cancer. Their cancer is linked to the use of insecticidal flea and tick dips, but more so if the dogs were obese and lived near another source of pesticides.8 In the terrier study, the researchers found that when the Scotties ate green leafy vegetables three times a week, there was a 90 percent reduction in their risk of cancer.
Danger Ahead We need to ring all the alarm bells about the accumulation of chemical wastes in the bodies of wildlife. The fire-retardant chemicals known as PDBEs have been found in every fish sampled in San Francisco Bay. They are similar to PCBs in their chemical structure, and the levels found in breast, blood and breast-milk samples of U.S. women are the highest in the world. Is it a coincidence that women in San Francisco also have the highest levels of breast cancer anywhere?
PDBEs have been linked to an array of adverse health effects, including the possibility of cancer. When Sweden noticed a 60-fold increase of PDBEs in human breast milk between 1972 and 1997, it led to a ban throughout the European Union. In the San Francisco Bay area, the level in breast milk is 12 to 300 times higher than it was in Sweden, but the chemical industry has blocked Californias attempts to legislate.
We have to fight back, if we want to regain our health and the health of the worlds wildlife.

On Monday, March 16 at 10pm EST, HBO is airing a new documentary film exposing the rampant animal cruelty in factory farms and slaughterhouses. Death on a Factory Farm tells the story of the Humane Farming Associations landmark investigation into the mistreatment of animals at the notorious Wiles Farm hog factory in Ohio. The video evidence leads to a rare prosecution and trial for animal cruelty. The verdict surprised even the most seasoned animal activists. Definitely set some time aside on Monday to watch this important new film.
Undercover video footage is one of the most important tools used by animal activists. There's a reason why factory farms and slaughterhouses are kept so far from public view. Any reasonable person would be shocked to see how pigs, chickens, cows, turkeys, ducks and other animals are systematically mistreated in the meat, dairy and egg industry. As Paul McCartney says, "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian".
The footage was gathered by "Pete", an investigator who went undercover to infiltrate the Ohio pig farm in 2006. He's a 20-something vegan, animal activist who has infiltrated multiple slaughterhouses and factory farms. "Pete" is cautious about sharing his real identity with anyone. Afterall, he's changed his name twice already to ensure that he could continue securing jobs at slaughterhouses. . . .
What's the worst thing you've ever seen in your career? On an egg farm, it's very, very normal to see live hens thrown in the trash. If you spin them around to break their necks like they tell you to, that doesn't always cause cervical dislocation. So they just kind of throw them away live in the trash. You'll always come across birds that are barely breathing, missing all their feathers, all bloody in the trash. You never get completely desensitized to that.
...
Do you ever have sympathy for the people you're working with? All the time. The vast majority of people I work with are very polite, very considerate people. They just have absolutely no respect for animals. But I blame the companies that own these facilities, not the workers themselves.
Are there any conditions under which you would think it's O.K. to raise animals for food? I do not believe animals are here for us to exploit, and I do not believe that under any circumstances we should raise animals for food. That said, I am very happy Proposition 2 passed in California and that it will phase out extreme confinement of animals, including battery cages for hens.
The Pacific Seahorse Needs You! April 02, 2009 12:33 PM
Marine Protected Areas are being proposed in Southern California, from Point Conception to San Diego. These underwater state parks and reserves have the power to restore damaged habitats and let threatened species thrive. Learn more.
San Diego Bay is home to California's only seahorse - the Pacific seahorse in addition to five pipefish species (seahorse relatives). These animals maintain a delicate foothold in selected estuaries and bays along the south coast and are sensitive to habitat disturbance from a variety of human activities.
Estuaries and coastal wetlands have consistently been designated as marine reserves under the Marine Life Protection Act, affording them the highest level of protection.
Please send a letter to the Governor and ask him to support a strong network of Marine Protected Areas to help seahorses, and their kin in Southern California.

Lion Meat For Sale in US 24 March 2009 Born Free CEO Will Travers blogs about the news that lion steaks are on sale in the US.
Dear Friends
You think you have been shocked. You think you have seen it all. Then something else comes along that takes matters to a new low. Heres how they describe their latest offering on www.1-800-steaks.com:
Lion meat to be a much better quality cat meat than tiger meat. Lion meat is unique and a little more expensive meat but we like to respond to customer requests so here it is! If you are looking for something completely different, this is the product for you. Lion meat will definitely give the neighbours and friends something to talk about! Why not take the plunge and try our most unusual meat. Farm-raised in South Africa.
You can then go on to order 16 oz lion chops for US$199.
Who in their right minds would do this? Who in South Africa is raising and selling lions for meat? Who in the States (or anywhere else for that matter) is buying it?
The site even acknowledges awaiting USDA approval to sell captive raised tiger meat (forget that it is against US law to commercialize parts of tigers or even items that contain or claim to contain parts of tigers).
Austria and France declared their intention to ban the import of seal products. They join the US, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Mexico and Croatia in speaking out against Canada's cruel, unsustainable, and unnecessary slaughter of harp seal

Soldiers Getting Away With Animal Cruelty In Texas
To: Jean Offutt, Public Affairs Officer, United States Army
Please Demand That The Army's Fort Bliss In Texas Take Animal Cruelty Seriously and demand prosecution of these individuals !
Two recent cases of animal cruelty by soldiers at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas raise cause for alarm.
- In the first case, Fort Bliss soldier Dwayne Sumter left his dog enclosed in a crate alone in an off-post house for weeks, the dog died.
- The second case involved another Fort Bliss soldier, Spc. Frank Zimmerman, accused of killing a small dog and injuring another: he broke the leg of one dog and the dog named Tinkerbelle, was killed allegedly after Zimmerman stomped on her neck.
Say No to Offshore Drilling in California and Alaska!
Join Pacific Environment at the public hearings on April 14 in Anchorage or April 16 at University of California-San Francisco's Mission Bay Conference Center or our colleagues in Atlantic City and New Orleans to tell Secretary of the Interior Salazar to say no to offshore drilling. In San Francisco, join us for a noon-time Oceans Voices rally with music, elected officials and concerned citizens.
Your voice is urgently needed right now to prevent the sacrifice of your favorite coastline to dangerous offshore oil drilling impacts. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar is holding public hearings on each coast in Atlantic City, New Orleans, Anchorage and San Francisco. These hearings will determine if the Obama Administration allows new offshore oil and gas drilling in our most sensitive coastal waters. Scroll to the bottom of this page to learn more about the proposed plan.
Tell President Obama: Strengthen Ban on Commercial Whaling!
To: President Barack Obama
Ever since the Presidency of Richard Nixon, the official policy of the United States has been to oppose commercial whaling.
The Bush Administration entered into secret negotiations, closed off to interest groups and the public, to reach a deal with Japan that was supported by Norway and Iceland, to legitimize the killing of whales. At a time when Japan was under intense international pressure to stop whaling, the demand for whale meat was dwindling and the Japanese whaling interests were in an economic tailspin, the Bush Administration intervened to get Japan off the hook. Even though President Bush recently left office, the US IWC delegation continues to perpetuate his legacy of capitulating to Japan.
President Barack Obama must hear from the public that he needs to reverse the US position and stop these negotiations. His new Administration is very busy with other priorities, but a deal with Japan on whaling may be reached soon, and he must hear that we oppose such a deal.
The Canadian seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals in the world.
The Canadian government is allowing fishermen to kill 280,000 harp seals in the 2009 hunt, an increase of 5,000 from 2008. Fishermen will beat and shoot to death pupsmany of them little more than 12 days oldfor their fur. Despite new regulations that the Canadian government claims will make the hunt "humane," sealers have already been witnessed skinning pups while alive and conscious.

Alaska is truly our nation's last frontier. It is also the last place in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to chase and kill wolves. They shoot these animals from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank.
Thirty five years ago, Congress passed a law to put an end to aerial hunting. But Alaska is exploiting a loophole in federal law to resume the practice, not only for wolves, but bears as well. Hundreds of scientists have condemned what Alaska is doing, even as other states threaten to follow Alaska's lead. It's time to stop aerial hunting once and for all.
Rep. George Miller (CA) has introduced the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, legislation to close a federal loophole and curb Alaska's brutal aerial hunting program -- and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like the Greater Yellowstone region.
Please urge your Representative to sign on as a cosponsor to Rep. George Miller's PAW Act.
We're fighting a battle in Alaska to protect Bristol Bay from what will be the world's largest toxic lake. This area is truly one of the world's greatest wild areas.
I read about this with utter disgust and contempt for the US military . . . These are using live pigs to test "bomb proof"armour!!! These tests leave animals ill, injured and slaughtered . . . Please help to stop this atrocity! . . .
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has approved the Bush Administration's flawed plan to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains.
If this decision is allowed to stand, nearly two-thirds of the wolves in the Northern Rockies could be killed starting as soon as this spring.
All the reasons why this plan was a bad idea when the Bush administration proposed it still stand today. It fails to address biological concerns adequately, and to ensure healthy genetic exchange among wolves in the region. And it fails to address concerns with the wolf management plans in Montana and Idaho, which undermine a sustainable wolf population by killing too many wolves.
Send a letter to Secretary Salazar today and urge him to stop the implementation of this awful decision and to reconsider his approach to wolf conservation in the Northern Rockies.
The recovery plan for the newly reintroduced Mexican wolf of Arizona and New Mexico is outdated. The old recovery plan is from 1982. The reintroduction of this magnificent wolf has been hampered by the lack of a new recovery plan. The goal when the first eleven Mexican wolves were released in 1998 was 100 wolves in the wild by 2008. Year end numbers in 2008 showed only 52 wolves and two breeding pairs. Without help from our leaders in the Interior Department and the Fish and Wildlife Service this reintrod
On March 6th, 2009, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar approved the Bush Administration's discredited plan to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana, a decision that could lead to the deaths of more than 1,000 wolves
Thanks so much for taking the time to get involved in our work to save wolves. Your message has been sent to Governor Sarah Palin's offices.
With your help, we can expose Alaska's brutal aerial wolf hunts and promote sound wildlife management of wolves and other wildlife in Alaska. To learn more about Governor Sarah Palin's awful record on conservation issues, please visit our website: http://www.eyeonpalin.org/learn_more/index.php.
Please take the next step -- tell others about Governor Palin's cruel and needless aerial wolf-killing program. The fight to stop Alaska's brutal aerial gunning campaign is stretching our resources to the limit, and we need all the help we can get. Forward the message that follows to friends, family and others that care about wildlife.

Since its launch earlier this week, Eye on Palin -- our new campaign made possible by caring supporters like you -- has also been featured on hundreds of blogs, covered by MSNBC, CNN, Reuters and other news outlets.
The nation is talking about Sarah Palin's terrible wolf-killing program -- and now Sarah Palin needs to hear from you.
We were deeply saddened last week when news surfaced that wolf 341F, the lone wolf from Montana that had traveled to northern Colorado earlier this year, was found dead. We don't yet know the circumstance of her death, but what we do know is this: it
Its going to take a national outcry to block the massacre of hundreds of wolves in Idaho and Montana -- which could start as early as May 4 when their federal protections are removed.
Speak out now against the killing. Add your voice to The Big Howl, NRDCs new rapid-response mobilization campaign.
In just a few weeks, the mass killing of wolves could begin in Idaho and Montana -- and not even newborn wolf pups and their nursing mothers will be spared.
We cannot stand by while this slaughter unfolds. On May 4, the wolf's federal protection will be lifted, and government agents will be free to open fire. After that, the states will launch public hunts, targeting wolves.
We must act now to call off the guns!
That's why NRDC is launching The Big Howl campaign to mobilize Americans everywhere to protect wolves in the Northern Rockies from the crossfire.
Add your voice now to our campaign. Tell Interior Secretary Salazar to reverse his decision to kick wolves off the endangered species list.
This is absolutely the wrong time to rip away federal protections from these struggling wolves. Over the past year, the wolf population in Yellowstone National Park has declined by 27 percent, with more than 70 percent of wolf pups succumbing to disease.
One pack alone lost all 24 of its pups!
If the federal protections are lifted on May 4 as planned, newborn wolf pups and their nursing mothers traveling outside national parks will be in the line of fire.
That's why NRDC and our partners are filing suit in federal court to block this disastrous policy. But we must do more: we must raise a nationwide outcry that the Obama Administration cannot ignore.
Please call on the Interior Department to go back to the drawing board and submit this cruel plan to the kind of rigorous scientific review the Obama Administration has promised.
Because you have always stood up for wildlife, I'm contacting you first to take part in The Big Howl campaign.
After you send your own message, I will let you know about an easy way to spread the word to your friends and family. We need at least one million messages to save the wolves -- so get ready to rally your friends and family to add their own voices to The Big Howl.
I absolutely love wolves, and I think that what's happening to them is horrible. Hunting wolves should be banned. Wolves are just misunderstood, and they are actually wonderful creatures. They almost never attack people, and when they do (which is very rare) they have a good reason. If you don't think that what's happening is horrible, please watch 'Wolves are in the arms of angels' on YouTube. Picture is from http://www.akelataka.com/ Please sign this and help one of these beautiful animals today. Don't make another wolf become an angel in early life.
You've seen the headlines: Coyotes are attacking humans with more and more frequency. One wandered into a Chicago sandwich shop. Another lives in Central Park in New York. Five people have reported coyote attacks in the Denver area since December. And Colorado officials have responded by killing eight coyotes!
But the real problem isn't coyotes attacking humans, it's human suburban sprawl that increasingly takes over the habitat of wild animals like coyotes. Rather than hunting down and killing animals whose habitat has been destroyed by human subdivisions, we should enact stronger urban planning laws that protect the habitat of our nation's wildlife.
Urge your governor to work with your state's legislature and local county commissioners to ensure that humans don't further encroach on wild lands! Only then will we see a decline in the amount of these "urban coyote attacks."
The transport of chickens in Greater Mumbai is a continuous excercise in cruelty and results in horrific sufferings of all the birds being transported.

Cruel Wild-Horse Roundup Has Begun!. . . October 08, 2009 10:22 PM
A sweeping roundup of wild horses has begun in the western part of the U.S. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) uses helicopters to round up animals during such removals. The panicked horses often suffer devastating injuries as the helicopters chase the terrified animals toward a corral. Once captured, horses older than 10 years of age can be sold to "kill buyers," who transport the animals to Canada for slaughter, while younger horses may be placed in a government holding with 33,000 other horses whom the BLM has previously removed from the wild. The BLM has even proposed killing these animals because it can no longer afford to feed them.
Please place a CALL to officials and tell them that wild-horse roundups are inherently cruel and simply can't be carried out humanely . . . Demand that the BLM's horse roundups be immediately cancelled.

Take Action to Prevent Bay Oil Spills November 06, 2009 12:18 PM
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that on Friday, October 30, at approximately 6:50 a.m., an estimated 400 to 800 gallons of heavy bunker fuel was released into the Bay during a fuel transfer between an oil tanker, the Dubai Star, and a barge. This toxic fuel is now washing up along six miles of Alameda's shoreline. According to the Department of Fish and Game, this oil has killed 18 birds and injured dozens more. It may take weeks to extract the toxic oil from sand and rocks, where it continues to threaten public health and wildlife.
This spill comes nearly two years to the day after the Cosco Busan oil spill devastated shorelines and killed countless birds and other wildlife. Save The Bay is deeply concerned to see San Francisco Bay again falling victim to a damaging oil spill.
Please join Save The Bay in taking action to demand the state legislature fully investigate this recent oil spill.
Protect the legacy of the Taku region Tuesday, 9:36 AM
Because of its remote location, the Taku region doesnt have a large constituency of people who know about it, and who are speaking out for it. We need to change that. A strong constituency speaking for its ecological and cultural value could persuade decision makers to recognize these values on the ground, and protect vast, interconnected regions of the Taku from industrial pressure.
Provincial government and First Nations negotiators are in their last round of negotiations. They need to hear from you now.
Use this action centre to write a letter calling on decision makers to put the ecological and cultural integrity of the Taku at the forefront of the land use planning process.
