There is one only shelter in Skopje (Macedonia), where dogs are killed in huge number and impressive frequency. The Mayor, responsible of the shelter, declared openly that dogs must be KILLED, everyone of them. The shelter was meant to sterilize dogs and then let them go, but OFFICIALLY 56% of dogs are killed.

Dear Sir,

We appeal to you, asking (begging) for you to support and help us immediately, if possible, in our desperate trying to stop the massacre of the homeless puppies in Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia, by the local government. They DO NOT respond to our appeals to stop with their inhuman behavior of murdering helpless little creatures.

In the Republic of Macedonia there is not even one facility center that would take care of the homeless animals, and there is only one temporary (transit) center, Vardarishte Sanctuary. But, this stationary instead of implementing the program “catch, neuter, RELEASE” for which it is constituted and paid for, this institution is implementing mass liquidation and killing every second dog they catch. The official statistics of the city till the 1st of January 2009 indicate high 55, 7% of euthanasia, and what is happening these last few weeks is 100% genocide. The dogs are not being brought back, but literally disappear.

These last two weeks Macedonian volounteers protested, and they have sent hundreds of e-mails to the Major of the city of Skopje, Mr. Koce Trajanovski (gradonacalnik@skopje.gov.mk) and to the Prime Minister of R. Macedonia, Nikola Gruevski , ( http://www.vlada.mk/?q=contact) but the killings are ongoing.

These e-mails contained the following:

1. Please stop with the mass euthanasia! This act is an act of cruelty, implies social backwardness and it is against all European Standards regarding the treatment of the homeless dogs!!!

2. We are asking for urgent reorganization and capacity enlargement of the Vardarishte Stationary. You cannot expect any descent results from a stationary that has only one service for catching dogs and only one veterinary, and it is supposed to treat 10 000 dogs! This unserious act only brings to death of the innocent dogs, and you are spending large amounts of money for no results! There is an urgent need to include 5 more veterinaries in this stationary, or every local government by itself, to engage veterinary and dog catching service with a motor vehicle.

3. There is supposed to be regular monitoring over the realization of this project- NGO’s, public inspectorate etc.

4. The dogs should be brought back to the same location where they were found- this is an obligation which the communal service does not respond to, even though it is paid for it.

5. There suppose to be competent persons in the Stationary that would insist on finding homes for the homeless puppies, instead of the incompetent persons working for the communal service that do not wish to make any effort to find a home for these homeless puppies…

Please, are you in a position to help us change this situation in Skopje? It is very urgent!!! Could you also appeal to the Major of the city of Skopje and the Prime Minister of R. Macedonia to make personal efforts to change this situation?

Dear Mr. Fouere,

With greatest respect towards your actions and engages in Macedonia, we refer to you with request for reaction to the Macedonian institutions about the genocide over the stray dogs in sanctuary Vardariste in Skopje.
We are activists for the animal rights from all over the world and activists from the biggest international associations for animal protection (WSPA, OIPA International, VIER Pfoten etc.). We have expressed our disappointment about the situation to the mayor of Skopje , Mr. Koce Trajanovski, to the premier, Mr. Nikola Gruevski and to the Macedonian media, because in the Vardariste facility, instead of implementing the program Catch, Neuter, Release (of the stray dogs), there is a highest rate of euthanasia in Europe (57% officially, 90% unofficially). We didn’t get a response from any Macedonian institution. Instead, the situation has become even more alarming and the indications say that this month there will be rapid “clear” of the city streets.

The situation is as follow:
1. The sanctuary (it is officially called sanctuary but more looks like camp for killing dogs, due to they are starving until death) is open for adopting only from 9-12 hour every Friday, when most of the potentials who want to adopt a stray dog are at work, which makes adopting very difficult.
2. The sanctuary has only one veterinary doctor for 7-10 thousand street dogs - and more than 15 person for catching the dogs (the cages are always fulfill).
3. All offered help from non profit and non government organizations as we are is rejected.
4. There is no monitoring as it is practice in the EU countries.

This is why we are writing to you, as a humane and liable person and we are hoping that you can react and espouse for:
- Urgent termination of the rate of euthanasia of the stray dogs (euthanasia should be practiced only on aggressive and deadly ill dogs by all European standards and by the program of Vardariste facility);
- Consistent practice of the program “Catch, Neuter, Release”;
- Pressure to all the institutions that are responsible for the Vardarishte sanctuary – the town of Skopje (its mayor Koce Trajanovski) and the public company “Komunalna higiena”, in order to stop the killings of the innocent creatures;
- We also need written support from you to the local organizations, that the NGOs who protect the animal rights must volunteer and help solving the problem with the stray dogs in Vardarishte sanctuary (on this mail:info@srcezazivotnite.org.mk) ;
- The Vardariste facility must open its doors for potential adopters every day (elsewhere in the world the shelters work 6-8 hours a day);
- Humane treatment to the stray dogs in Vardariste, because now they die of hunger and diseases;
- Hiring more veterinaries in Vardariste, so the stray dogs can have a humane and adequate treatment.

We are sure that you can help us with your humanity and liability, in order to stop this massacre. We also hope that you will take this letter in consideration and you will do a human thing, in order to save the innocent stray animals in Macedonia that are killed every day by a public institution.

Humane Society of Missouri to examine shooting of 19-year-old cat in Raymore

The Humane Society of Missouri is investigating the death of Tobey, a family’s cat shot twice in the head on Labor Day by a Raymore police officer.

Also Friday, the acting police chief in the Cass County community said his officers have been schooled this week to make sure they know the protocol for dealing with animal control issues.

“They know now, I guarantee you that,” Capt. Roger Mayberry said.

Mayberry had a rough week. Tobey’s shooting and disposal in a trash bin outraged animal lovers and brought a storm of criticism.

According to reports, police thought they were dealing with a large, vicious, feral cat. In fact, Tobey was 19, deaf, declawed, weighed 6 pounds and had lived with his family for 18 years.

Mayberry has since apologized to Tobey’s owner and sought Friday to satisfy residents and critics that the incident would not be repeated.

The officers involved will not be punished, he said Friday, but he added that an investigation is ongoing.

Brian Williams, an investigator for the humane society, said he would take several days to interview the officers and anyone else involved.

Tobey apparently got out of his house Monday and wandered down the street to a neighbor’s garage. A call came to police that a stray cat had acted aggressively and perhaps scratched a child.

The neighbor tried to shoo Tobey away by dousing him with a garden hose.

After police captured the cat, a supervisor told an officer to take the cat to a remote area and “ut him down.”

At the same time, Tobey’s family was out looking for him. They were shocked to learn what happened.

On Friday, Mayberry said the city was working on a new plan that would require an animal control officer to always be on call. Currently, no one is available after hours, on weekends or on holidays.

Also, strays would be taken to clinics or shelters. Dead animal would be taken to Wayside Waifs for disposal, Mayberry said.

URGENT: Ask GNC to Stop Using Cruel Glue Traps

Compassionate employees of GNC (a vitamin supply company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) recently reported to PETA that GNC stores nationwide are using glue traps to kill mice. We immediately contacted corporate officials, alerting them to the extreme cruelty associated with glue traps, but our concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

Glue traps are exceedingly cruel—some of the cruelest products on the market. Panicked animals will often panic and tear themselves apart in the desperate struggle to get free, ultimately dying exhausted and terrified from shock, dehydration, asphyxiation, or blood loss. Research indicates that death does not come swiftly, taking more than 24 hours in many cases. And terrified, trapped rodents lose control of their bodily functions, thereby increasing the risk of disease transmission to anyone handling the traps (the Centers for Disease Control advise against glue traps for this very reason). Furthermore, lethal methods of rodent control don't work in the long run. As long as the areas of concern remain attractive and accessible to these animals, more will move in to fill the newly vacant niche. In addition, killing individuals can result in a spike in the food supply and prompt remaining females to breed, causing the rodent population to increase!

Please urge GNC officials to join the ranks of the many entities nationwide—including JPMorgan Chase & Co., American Eagle Outfitters, and Safeway—that have compassionately sworn off using these cruel devices! Ask them to do the right thing by removing all glue traps from their stores immediately.
