I'm happy to be a part of this new group.

I have a keen interest in Civil Rights in general , and of late I have been focusing on civil rights violations in the military, particularly civil rights violations in military recruitment.

Thank you Marie!  You are a Light.

I'm glad you're here with us, Erin!  The work against military civil rights violations is very important, especially since the lies spread to recruit young men into the army will result in the destruction of their life, whether from irreparable mental or physical injuries, loss of livelihood, or death.

Welcome Natiqkad!  Be sure to read the post about The Economy of Catastrophe, as it is about Iraq and New Orleans, both of which have been treated badly by contractors paid by our government and military.

It helps us understand how global rich people use disasters against the rest of us to change the world so rich people have it better and the rest of us become poorer and poorer.

You might also be interested in the other post called Living Paycheck to Paycheck which also talks about both the American people and the Iraqi people, and how wrong is what we have done in Iraq.

Let me give ya a lil history, my disability began at birth, I died when I was born that which caused the brain damage. I affects my daily living every day. I struggle to comprehend others and I struggle to convey what I want to say affectively. Many tell me how good I am, yet I know of my struggles throughout adulthood. I've had numerous jobs, most of them being underemployed, not making a living wage. Most of my adulthood I've been living with my parents whom disapprove of most of what I do, in fact, they disapprove of me being on Care2. Anyhow, to make a long story short, I was constructively discharged when I was the top tutor, I performed administrative duties, I also was an Adjunct Instructor whom taught Computer Graphics. Faculty, staff and students thought highly of me, until I asked for reasonable accommodations. Then the college chose to disregard the ADA and the hostile work environment became too much and I resigned. I lost 3 teaching contracts having nothing to do with the other department. I need to bring this to a close, but I'll be sharing more, if you're interested, check out my profile page and there you will find my petitions. Have a great week and if there is anything I can do, let me know, I'm eager to help. God bless, Richard Lewis  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 October 28, 2007 10:03 PM

Welcome, Richard. I am eager to read whatever you have to say, especially on disability issues. I understand the many ways in which people think people with disabilities are well accepted but they are not. I have experienced many different incidences of discrimination because I am disabled too.

My disabilities began with a river rafting accident that smashed up my pelvis and backbone. My parents are anti-nurture anti-need and refused to allow me to get medical care, which brought about long-term damage that has me in a wheelchair. Thankfully I have a power chair, which gives me plenty of independence.

But I have had my share of statements like "We can't accomodate people like you!" I talked to a disability lawyer once, who said that since the ADA was passed, disabled people have lost every case at the Supreme Court level and are losing most court battles at the state, county, and city level as well. In a real sense, the ADA was a Trojan Horse, pretending to give disabled people more rights, while actually taking away what little rights we already had.

Richard, and I look forward to your future posts!

Good Morning! October 29, 2007 9:01 AM

all!

Richard for the invite!

I, too, am disabled, and in a power chair. I have MS, and a host of other illnesses, some of which came from the MS, others not. I haven't faced real discrimination since diagnosis, though there are some MS symptoms that gave me problems before diagnosis, that caused discrimination where I worked. Like Richard, I faced constructive discrimination, because the Principal at the school where I was teaching could not understand why I needed to sit down as much as I did. (If I didn't sit down, I fell down.) But I'll save my diatribe against her till another time.

I've also been homeless, but I wasn't discriminated against because of it, because I wouldn't stand for it. At the time, I wasn't disabled, but my husband was, and we both were sporting broken bones from two separate falls. But I've got a tiger in my tank who's just roaring-ready to come out when I need to deal with idiots, like those in Social Services, who act like you're taking the money straight out of their pockets.

I tend to take people at face value, by their personalities, more than anything else. It's the way I was raised. There are some people I'm a bit leery of though, and that's those who try to convert me to their religion or their political or social viewpoint. I must simply agree to disagree. I don't try to force my viewpoint on them, and I expect the same courtesy in return. It's a matter of respect.

Peace!

Lisa

anonymous Hello All October 29, 2007 10:25 AM

Hi All,

Thanks to Richard for the invitation to join this group.  I am in the UK, 45 & physically disabled. Although I have not actually been discriminated against because of that, it was in the past when I was working.

I will try & keep up with what goes on but belong to so many things it's hard but very enjoyable.

Our world needs one heck of a shake up, Laws need to be changed to fit the crime, in the UK school teachers are not allowed to chastise or punish bad behaviour, the police have none or little authority over them, & the parents get fined or punished in other ways if they chastise their own children.....If we are not careful we will end up a lawless society with no morals.

Sorry if I have rattled on a bit but if you don't like me sharing my issues well kick my butt out....

Thanks Andrea x

Re: [CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL PEOPLE] Introduction Thread- Please introduce yourself October 29, 2007 11:51 AM

Hi, Thanks for the invite and like everyone here am against any governments intervension in human and civil rights. A great concern of mine is also rights for disabled people. Despite legislation our rights are being eroded daily. I am totally blind and use a special programme called Window-eyes. Despite advances in technology we fall way behind simply because web sites are simply not accessible.Guidelines are produced for web developers to use yet the majority of them fall short of even the basic accessibility. They are losing out on potential customers and we are not being treated equally. I live in Scotland where there is legislation in place to prevent disabled discrimination. Sorry to say it just doesn't work. I am on my second year BA Social science course and while a very few lecturers are helpfull others are not. There could be many different reasons for this and I certainly don't want to judge but at the end of the day it isn't a level playing field. Welcome, John D.  I am so glad that you have window-eyes to get you around on the internet, and also sorry that there are a lot of sites you can't get into.  I hope we will see future progress in that area.

The organist at my wedding was totally blind- he was my husband's room-mate before we got married.  I used to help him get around in the cafeteria, where people's trays were flying around like a busy airport as they rushed to get all kinds of things for lunch.

I look forward to learning from you in this group.  I am glad to see a lot of disabled people like myself.  I am in a wheelchair due to a river-rafting accident.  I run my own business at home, creating home school curriculum.  I'm glad to know there are  a lot of people for me to learn from here about civil rights for all kinds of people.

Hi, Henry!  I'm sorry it's been hard to get a job.  People have so many prejudices.  I know it means a lot to have work to do!  I work at home creating penmanship and art curriculum.  I'm lucky to be able to work at home because my family treats me well.  I hope you are able to find meaningful work soon too, and are not walled out any longer by people's prejudices.  Welcome to our group!  [ send green star]

 October 31, 2007 7:54 AM

Susan!  I think I know what you mean about people's social and emotional prejudice and how much that hurts.  I get walled out a lot, in my wheelchair, sometimes by people who just don't think about what they are doing.

I love life and live it to the fullest.  I have a good life.  But there are times when I am very discouraged by people who wall me out because my wheelchair can be in the way sometimes.

Then there is the frustration of people who think you have to get healed to be happy.  Some people see the wheelchair as a negative but it is really a wonderful thing.     [ send green star]

Hello November 01, 2007 6:03 AM

My name is Scotty Reid, I am the host of oneblackmansview on blogtalkradio.com, I also created a petition linked to olympicgenocide2008.com to help end the genocide in Darfur Sudan where you have Arabs trying to exterminate black Africans who had grievances with the government of Khartoum which does not allow blacks to be educated and also enslaves them. This is the 21st century and I find it a travesty that slavery and discrimination still exist. While I have suffered job/pay discriination in America, I choose at this time to focus on the people of Darfur who are being exterminated, please visit olympicgenocide2008.com and sign our petition hosted on care2.

Welcome, Scotty! We welcome your perspective here. I recently watched a movie about William Wilberforce who fought for years in the Brittish parliament to abolish slavery. The way slaves were kept on the slave ships was incredible cruelty (such as Africans being kept chained in a 4 foot by 18 inch box 24-7 through the duration of the entire journey to America.) You are right, we must fight to end slavery anywhere in the world that it still occurs.

Have you ever read about President Bush's trip to the point where the slave ships left the African coast? He was going there to celebrate the end of slavery on a particular anniversary of when it supposedly ended. Before he arrived, he had the African authorities herd the local people into one corner of the island and also had all their homes searched with dogs. Pretty incredible symbolism there! Race prejudice may be curtailed some, but it is not gone.

Welcome, Michael G!  I appreciate your post about our government attempts to seize Apache land to build the border fence.  The government has no right to take their land.  And I am troubled by the anti-immigrant hysteria in our society today.  Thanks for being an active member already!   [ send green star]

Hello! February 04, 2008 2:40 AM

Hello! I followed Harmony's links here. To answer the introductory question, I am interested in civil rights/human rights *universally*. Because I can't work on absolutely everything, I focus on the civil rights of homeless people, but that ends up related to racism, sexism, agism, heterosexism, and everything else. The best way to defend the full rights of anyone is to defend the equal rights of everyone. I believe that the foundation of all ethics is the regard we have for others. To value other people as ourselves is impossible to do without attributing to them the same rights we claim for ourselves.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Anitra! I am a frequent visitor and poster on Harmonys homeless forum. Yes, a lot of different rights issues are part of the cause of homelessness.

I would add to your list of rights issues that often cause homelessness: disability issues as well as chronic illness. The disabled are not taken care of nearly as well as most people think. Disability payments often do not cover standard housing costs. I have seen people in wheelchairs and vets with amputations on crutches living on the streets and begging. Its a real shame to our society that this happens at all.

Chronic illness is something that is understood even less. It is very hard to get disability for chronic illness, and even friends and relatives often wont believe a person is truly ill when the physical symptoms come from illnesses that doctors dont know much about yet. So the chronically ill often dont have much physical or moral support.

Anyone who is physically more vulnerable than the rest of society can find themselves laid off more quickly and more often, and end up either homeless or very poor. This can be anything from chronic fatigue to migraines, IBS, fibromyalgia, diabetes, etc.

Anything that makes you miss "too many" sick days, get to work late, have to leave early, or have to lay down at work. My husband works at home because his migraines forced him to miss too many sick days. (When he gets a migraine either he lays down for hours or he throws up over and over again, so he isnt just being soft on himself or imagining anything.

I work at home because I am disabled from a river rafting accident. Add to that diabetes and fibromyalgia. I would not be able to cope in the work world but am a successful writer, editor, and publisher. The pay is, however, not always predictable and as you know, any little thing can cause anyone without a great big savings account to become homeless very suddenly.

I deeply appreciate your dedication to homeless issues especially, as that is an issue that causes so much suffering! And yes, sexism, racism, etc. are also important issues. Anything that gives a human being a hard life unfairly is a civil rights-human rights issue that should concern us all. Welcome, Anitra!

Hi all,
I'm new to the group! I'm here to support a cause. My fiance has has many violations of his civil rights while awaiting trial for over two years... I would like to post his petitions here, they have detailed factual articles to explain the full story, with facts.
  Nice to meet everyone!

Getting Aquainted... January 18, 2009 2:34 AM

Hello, Im Sr. Clare-Francis. I have joined this group because I am concerned about the Discrimination which is experienced by those (adults & children alike) who are Weight Challenged.

I am particularly interested in connecting with people who have experienced such discrimination in all areas of life such as:-In the Education System, With Careers, In the workplace, from the Medical Professional, such as Doctors, Nurses, Dietitians, Dental Care, and in any other aspect of living.

People who have children, siblings, spouses, and other loved ones who have been discriminated against are amongst those who I would like to link with. The purpose of linking with these people is to gather information and further down the track to submit my findings to legislators to abolish such discrimination.

I am an Australian, and have some evidence of this type of discrimation occuring here. Evidence also suggests that this issue is not unique to Australia, but is also evident in the U.S.

Without being able to collect data to confirm this evidence, then changine this situation will continue to remain unresolved, and with the passage of time may well continue to grow like a cancer in the world.

Thank you for considering this issue,as Im passionate about eliminating the pain and distress that this kind of humiliation brings to those subjected to such treatment.

I am but just one person who has experienced such discrimination over a projected period of time. Alone, one voice has no impact, but in numbers supporting each other surely we can make ourselves heard.

Here in Australia, there is no such group that currently protects those whose lives are made unbearable by such treatment.

Are you one of those people I'm speaking about and if you are what are you prepared to do about it?

I am no longer significantly overweight and have not experienced any legal discrimination based on my weight.

However, the issue strikes a chord because when I was 245 pounds earlier in my life, I experienced serious social persecution because of my weight.  People would frown and glare when I came into a store (in my wheelchair.)  The people in my home school support group were rude to me and very cold.  Doctors yelled at me for being overweight.  It was a very painful time in my life.

When I was young, I had an ideal figure, so I had no idea how cruel people could be to overweight people.  When I was in my mid 30's I gained weight because of a thyroid problem.  I lost my appetite, ate little, had little energy and put on lots of weight.  When I lost 60 pounds, I was actually eating more- but lost weight because my thyroid was treated with iodine.

People assume that weight gain is a character problem but that is often not the case.  There are many causes of weight gain, many of which medical science does not yet have the answer for, or doctors are not able to diagnose or treat.

And yes, it can lead to legal discrimination and is an important issue to address, so thanks for addressing it here.  I hope you get lots of support.  Thanks for what you are doing.

I'm Cynthia and I located your group under civil right's.  I was assaulted by a police officer while performing my mandated to report child abuse duty.  The child services worker told the abuser my name and you can imagine what happened next.
