Welcome Thread - Newcomers Say Hello Here! August 23, 2006 2:50 PM
It occurs to me that we've not had a "Welcome" thread in years for those who recently join Hot Debates. Feel free to introduce yourself here, as well as what you hope to get out of membership in this group.
Also, there are pinned threads regarding group guidelines, as well as previously discussed topics and themes. Please review them, where possible, so as to avoid duplication.
Welcome aboard.

My thanks to the hosts and members who strive to create an atmosphere where debate and controversy can be engaged in and bear good fruit.
Since joining Care2 over a year ago I have hoped to find a forum where honest discussion and debate took place without yielding to the temptation to become Jerry Springer Online. The threads in this group, with few exceptions, reveal a clear intent to educate while debating - without losing the quirkiness and delight of unique personalities.
Convictions and strong opinions are usually held by people for reasons they feel are sound. Discussion and debate can provide incredible opportunities to learn - if we're honestly seeking to understand the beliefs of someone we disagree with - and, perhaps just as importantly, how they came to hold those beliefs.
Gaining that sort of knowledge is not equivalent to embracing an ideology. Listening carefully and seeking to learn - especially when issues foster a warm response in our hearts - may be the most direct way to avoid conflicts which can be deeply regretted later.
I am grateful for each of you who make this group an exceptional example of what debate can be on Care2. You give me hope.

HELLO, MY NAME IS MARIE AND I FOUND THIS GROUP QUITE BY ACCIDENT. I LOVE DEBATES, THE EXCHANGE OF KNOWLEGE, DIFFERENT IDEAS WHETHER IT IS A POPULAR IDEA OR NOT. I LIKE DEBATING OTHER PEOPLES VIEWS, EITHER TO GAIN MORE INFO, OR TO EXPRESS MY OWN. I HOPE TO HAVE FUN ALSO AND I DO NOT TAKE THINGS PERSONAL. I ALWAYS BELEIVE THE OTHER PERSON MAY BE GETTING FUSTRATED BECAUSE THE POINT THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE MAY NOT BE COMING THROUGH. IT IS EASIER TO TALK, TO HEAR THE SOUND OF THE WORDS, THAN TO WRITE. THEN YOU PUT YOUR OWN SOUNDS ON THE WORDS AND IT MAY NOT BE WHAT WAS CONVEYED. THAT WILL BE THE ONE OBSTACLE TO OVERCOME. SINCE I AM NEW HERE, I WILL STILL NEED TIME TO BECOME COMFORTABLE IN EXPRESSING MY VIEWS. THANKS FOR THE WELCOME.

Welcome Dennis and Marie. It is my hope you will find the forum open-minded with respect to all ideas and "sides"...yet not (generally) prone to personal insults against those who hold certain opinions.

I'm not really a newbie! I've been here since November! (When I rejoined for the fourth or fifth time.) Please don't put me through the grinder!

Just saying Hi, I love a good discussion. I hate it when it ends up in ignorant name calling, adds nothing. I'm a bit disapponited to see that this thread isn't very active. Hope to change that.
Edward Janus | Disability Advocate and Activist - New member. April 30, 2009 6:22 AM
Hello, I am a new member of this Group, and I just wanted to introduce myself to this Group.
My name is Edward Janus. I am a Disability Advocate and Activist. My Campaign and Mission is Fighting for Persons with Disabilities. And Making Our Voices Heard. My Internet Activism for Supporting Causes is Governmental & Political Issues, Fair and Honest Media Reporting, Consumers Rights, Human Rights, Civil Rights, Childrens Rights, Womans Rights, Animals Rights, Educational Issues, Health Care Issues, Environmental Issues, Poverty Issues, Peace Issues, Hunger Issues, and Fight for Freedom, Homeless, Abuse and Violence Issues.
A little bit more about me. I have Cerebral Palsy and an amputee (both legs) confined to a wheelchair. I am homebound, shut-in. I have worked to earn a living for almost 25 years. Then I had over ten surgeries on my cervical spinal column (neck area) in my lifetime. Now I have been on Permanent Social Security Disability since 1996. I was married and have a daughter. In 1999 an automobile while crossing a street, struck my wife. She died instantly. Now, I Live Alone. I receive only one household income. A Social Security check monthly. I would contact people by telephone, but I am also deaf. I cannot hear very well on the phone. You can reach me by email; all my activities and tasks are via Internet. Or you may send a regular postal mail.
