It gives me great pleasure to welcome all our members by name to this group -Noble Group that is aimed at providing happiness to all beings in this world.
Thank you for the personal message recently, Raja, I will probably post in this group the life experience I had which made me decide to become a vegetarian 20 years ago.
I'm really gratified to see more and more people questioning the eating of flesh, the treatment of "food" animals, and the questioning of what constitutes a "healthy diet," rejecting the stranglehold the meat/dairy/egg industries have had in too many nations for too long, forcing their agenda into science so they could peddle their poison. Finally physicians and other health experts are saying that it's the lack of these things that make humans healthier, and that ultimately, it's better for the other living things of the world and the planet, too. Finally, finally!
I have to break this into two posts due to the space restrictions per post.
Part 1
In the summer of 1988, our family parrot, a cockatiel named Maxi, came to stay with me for a while. My mother was going on several trips over the course of the summer, and instead of carrying Maxi back and forth 20 miles each way from my parents house for my father to take care of him between work, he came to stay with me.
I loved him, dubbing him my baby brother and doting on him, greeting him first when Id get home from school, and sneaking treats for him all the time.He would find ways to fly over to the kitchen table when I was doing homework and keep me company either perched on my shoulder, or dueling with me and my pencil so he could chew on the eraser. I always let him win.
As I approached my apartment door, I could hear him calling to me as if to say, I know youre there, hurry!I opened the door and went over to him, drew up the door to the cage, and he immediately climbed out onto my hand and began to serenade, sing, warble, and bob his head as parrots love to do when they communicate.Maxi was a such an entertaining little busy body!
Now, I should mention here that growing up, our family ate a very prolific meaty diet.Meat was in every single meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner.Yet, all through my childhood and into my teen years, I had twinges of guilt and doubt when it came to harming and killing animals, and by the time I was around 15, I had withdrawn from activities involving harm to animals (I had been taught to hunt, told that certain animals were pests and needed to be killed, and so on).
With little Maxi now on my shoulder, I looked into the icebox and took out a small package of chicken leg quarters and a head of broccoli to eat for dinner. The alluring call of paper lying unguarded lured the cockatiel off my shoulder and onto the kitchen table, where I had thrown the days mail, and he whistled and sang while he inspected each envelope to decide which to shred first.I removed the important pieces and spread out the remainder on the table for him.
If youve ever watched a parrot chew and play, they tend to pull, drag, stand on their toy, lodge it against something and then rip it anything to facilitate the ripping and shredding of paper. One hed sheared a piece off an envelope, he would manipulate it in his beak and roll it into a little ball. This, then, he would carry to edge of the table and drop.Periodically he would walk to the edge of the table, cock his head, and peer down as if to count the pile of little prizes he was creating on the floor. He could keep himself entertained for hours this way (or until his supply of paper was used up).
He was happy:I was home to keep him company, he had paper to play with, the radio was on playing music, and he would whistle a note or two between the unmistakable pffffrrrrrt! sound of a piece of paper being ripped.
Id glance at him in between taking out a pan to bake some chicken, and a pot to steam broccoli.I set the pan on the oven and set two leg quarters in it, and began to sprinkle them both with seasoning, and while I did it, I looked over at Maxi, happily dancing about on the table, whistling errant notes and rolling little paper balls up with his beak as he prepared to flick them down onto the floor.
A thought suddenly popped into my head:Who is it that decided which of these two birds will be a little member of the family, and which will be killed and consumed?Who says theres even a difference?
I remember standing there for a moment, blinking with confusion, shock, and a feeling of stupidity stupidity because I never thought about this before now.I wrapped up the chicken and put it into the freezer to give to my father when I would see him the following week.
I could not eat that or any other meat product until The Question had been answered and the more I thought about it, the angrier I became.
Anger might seem like an odd sensation, but I began to feel more angry and irritated the more I began to really think about this question, talk to other people, and find information to read about animal farming and eating meat.I knew why I was angry, though at first it was somewhat difficult to concisely communicate:I was incensed that my society had conspired to lie to me over the course of my (young) lifetime, telling me that I had to eat meat to be healthy, concealing from me the conditions in which the animals I was served as food were forced to live and the suffering they endured as they were being killed; I was furious that people were getting rich on the suffering of others and lying to me in order to make me believe that I had to eat what they were selling.I trusted others and they lied to me, and the more I looked, the more insidious and expansive this lie became.I saw it everywhere, inculcating the entire culture with lies about the food pyramid, lies about the so-called lack of intelligence in other creatures that was used as an excuse to exploit and kill them, and lies perpetrated from generation to generation so that a few could get rich from the suffering of animals and the sicknesses eating those animals would later cause humans. I was lied to in an effort to desensitize me to what I was buying, a neatly wrapped shiny package, carefully devoid of the blood and horror it took to get it into the grocers case.I was disgusted, furious and outraged. How could I be so stupid as to not see this before?
The Question was, I knew, not answerable by the rules of logic that humans so pride themselves in having invented. For if one applies logic to the question, all one sees is a very arbitrary decision made on nothing but convenience, certainly not actual logic. As I would come to realize, the parrot and the chicken can suffer equally, and there is no difference when it comes to that.None at all.The difference defining who was a pet and who was only good enough to eat was an artificial construct that existed only in the human mind. And, I thought with additional ire, it is only humans who enslave other creatures.
The pent-up years of secret grief that remained buried and suppressed now surfaced, and the guilt and uneasiness over my past actions that had brought harm to some animals all committed at the behest of an insensitive parent filling a childs head with conflicting messages about animals overwhelmed me and I became distraught with emotional problems. The idea of animals suffering as slaves to humans so upset and angered me that I could not stop thinking about the great lie I had uncovered. It would take many months to resolve my emotional troubles and pull my psychological aches into a coherent source of fuel for my future path.
Twenty years later, I am still a vegetarian and grateful each day for having made that choice years ago.Of all the decisions in my life, it was one of a handful for which I have absolutely no regrets, and would make again were I to live my life over again.
Thank you, Krystyna for inviting me to the group! I've been a vegetarian for over 7 years now. There are so many people that don't realize that they're harming themselves and the Earth by eating innocent animals. If only they knew how much they suffer, and the torture they endure, some of them might become vegetarians as well.

Thank you dear Carolyn - it's nice to see you here...
Thank you so much for the invite Krystyna! I am a fairly new vegetarian. I quit eating red meat about 2 years ago and have finally given up poultry. I really must thank our good friend Daphne for this. Her passion for ALL animals got through to me. I am now working on my yogurt and occasional egg and cheese consumtion. I have given up milk for soy and don't miss it a bit. Even my daughter who loved Whole milk now prefers soy milk. Again Thank you and I will look forward to having this group for support and information and will try to contribute the same.

Your Friend and Host, Raja
Thank you Krystyna for inviting these beautiful people to our Friendly Group.
Thanks for the invite, Krystina. I was never concerned with vegetarianism until recently - but both my Buddhist and Yoga practices lead me to that direction. Currently, I would say that I am only partially vegetarian, but I have cut down on my meat-eating habits from daily to perhaps twice weekly maximum. Fridays, my son wants to eat meat and i generally fast or snack, most other days we do not eat meat - but he does prefer to, so sometimes I will buy some. I am currently trying to find recipes that he might like, and not recognize that there is no meat in! for example i can sneak in a lotus and mushroom pizza perhaps, or do a vegetable curry with some strange and unusual begetables that he will not recognize!

Re: [Vegetarianism] Welcome! August 10, 2008 9:56 PM
Thank you kindly. Many vegans like myself are seen as police and preechy, and that was never my point. I just want to make sure that we are moving the right direction, and promoting anti cruelty, and at the same time welcoming with open arms all the non vegetarians to discover cruelty free alternatives.
Thanks,
Daniel

Thanks so much for the very warm welcome Raja...as you probably already know I do not eat anything that has at one time had a heart beat! So this is the perfect group for me...sending you love, blessings and many hugz...Robin
Raja, thank you for the invite, your group looks quite active and passionate! I think I will love it here, I need all support I can get living in a community that is big on butchering. I live in PA Dutch country and cannot travel a mile without seeing farm animals, so hard to pass without tears. I know they will all die, and it breaks my heart.
Robin I love your description of your beliefs, not to eat anything that had a heartbeat, how much plainer can it be? It had a heart, it felt the pain, and this is something so many deny everyday, animals just don't feel that pain and fear like humans. Just look into their sweet eyes, it's more than obvious, it would be mankind who doesn't see or feel their pain. We have to maintain our compassion, never be that unfeeling.
At this juncture I am calling the attention of all our members to a very touching and personal experience posted by our friend Rooibos . B earlier onJuly 17.
It is worth reading for all those who have joined later. However it is worth reading again by all of us too.
This post almost picturizes the tale a fiction I had written titled " Avian Planet" and posted in another thread
I am sure Rooibos's Experience will bring in tears to your eyes - Also, if any of our members have any inhibitions in becoming total vegetarian they will be undoubtedly convinced on the sacredness of being a Vegetarian.
To make it easier for all of us I am opening a separate thread titledRooibos's Story .
I also hasten to add that if any of you had similar experience, please post it immediately.
I am presenting a special glittering Green Star and a Set of Glittering Green Roses to Rooibos. B
and a Glittering Green Star too
( PS: I tender my Sincere Apologies to Rooibos. B for not recognising the worth and importance of her personal experience and her sincerity in posting the same her.)
I am sure this tory will be the guiding light for all those with double mind in totally converting to become Vegetarians or Vegans
his is to welcome our Co Hosts, all the seven of them.
Ben and Krystyna joined me long Back and now we have Laurel, Cindy, Vyjayanty, Veronica, and Michele to make the full team of Eight Hosts.
I welcome you all, Friends with all My Heart.
With is team of enthusistic Hosts I am sure we can reach great heights in spreading the message of vegetarianism, the only real way of life for all human beings.
I request all our members to give a Rousing Welcome to all our seven Co - Hosts
For inviting me in this awesome group, i feel very honoured to try with you, all my dear friends, together, to spread the word about to be vegetarian, i know it's a long a difficult way, but..i hope...one day will come, a better one, when humankind will understand it's guilty towards GOD'S CREATION and will change it's old and bad behaviours, traditions, etc and will respect all the wonderful animals which was given to us for care ,will renounce to kill them for it's profits and will undeerstand that the new life is a healthier one and easier one..because he will not feel anymore guilty for sacryfing all these nice, kind, clever, loyal animals and for sure, humankind will feel better, healthier...Lets hope our fight will lead to success for a better world.
please, excuse my bad English, but,as i live in Romania, my English vocabulary is very poor and bad one, sorry for this inconvenient, i hope you understand me, than k you,Veronica

Thank you Raja for the invitation to this group. I have been a vegetarian by choice most of my life, but over three years ago I became a vegan after finally seeing the horrors of factory farming. I also have pet chickens which I adore and the thought of eating anything chicken made my stomach turn!
Veggies and fruits are wonderful so are nuts and grains!!!
