Act Now: Tie Minimum Wage to Cost of Living January 11, 2008 6:58 AM

Best Ideas Since Sliced Bread

As determined by the public vote in a national contest organized by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), calling for ideas to strengthen the economy and improve the day-to-day lives of working men and women and their families.

Peter SkidmoreTie Minimum Wage to Cost of Living
Many American working poor earn minimum wage. As cost of living increases, the purchasing power of minimum wage goes down, and a political fight becomes necessary to raise the minimum wage every few years (or many, as in the current case). This is unfair. A minimum should be a minimum in terms of purchasing power, not in inflation-bound dollars.
The solution is simple: tie the minimum wage to the Cost of Living index.
This is fair, helps the neediest American working families, and saves Americans from a useless recurrent political fight.

Make This Idea A Reality. Start Taking Action!

Discuss a course of action with others who believe in the idea, and get to work.

1. Get Heard.

Start an online petition to influence decision makers that can help move your idea forward.

Then let others know about it. You can promote it on the Care2 News Network and other Care2 Groups.

2. Get Organized.

Recruit supporterts. Invite your friends to sign your online petition and to join this group to support your plan of action. Ask them to invite their friends as well. The more the merrier.

You could even create your own Care2 group!

3. Get Local.

Once you get the ball rolling online, make the leap and take some action. Get together with your group and decide how to implement your idea. Should you plan an event? Or arrange to meet with local legislators and other community leaders? Contact the media? Click here to organize an event.

Steps 1, 2, and 3 are just the begining. We encourage you to come up with new ways to support this idea.

Join this discussion now and tell us how you can help turn this idea into action!

Minimum wage isn't a living wage January 23, 2008 10:24 AM

Abolish the minimum wage NOW. It's a job killer March 07, 2008 12:37 PM

We need to abolish the minimum wage all together. In reality, minimum wage laws are used by sleazy politicians to buy votes. Enforcing a minimum wage also hurts the poor because it's a job killer. When the government forces employers to raise wages for jobs, independant of the employer's actual economic situation, the employer has two options he/she can use to off-set the wage increase - they can raise prices of the goods or services they sell, or they can cut jobs. Either way, the poor lose.

There is another extremely important point to note here and that is it's not the governments job to regulate wages in a free market economy. The government as NO right to tell you how to run your business.

We arn't a socialist country yet - I know leading liberals like Obama and Clinton what to take American in that direction, but we arn't there yet.

Why not give more money to low wage earners? March 08, 2008 12:51 AM

On the face of it, increasing the minum wage sounds like such a wonderful idea, but when you look at the economics of it, it becomes evadent that we might want to think this one through a bit.

Kevin (above) has the basic economics spot on. Businesses are forced to make up lost income from minimum wage laws by either fireing employees,  raising prices, or penalizing higher paid workers.  Can you guess which route employer will take?

Another important thing to keep in mine with regards to minimum wage jobs is that the people holding these positions rarely stay at the minimum wage lever very long. These statistics are easily viewed by reading census numbers. Those interested can view the data here - http://www.census.gov/econ/census02/

For those unfamiliar with basic economics it may seem counter intuitive, but a government enforced minimum wage does nothing to help the poor. In fact it hurts them.

RE: Minimum Wage March 08, 2008 9:59 PM

Great responses to the call for indexing the minimum wage to price increases.  Amazingly, so many fail to see that putting a price floor (i.e., a minimum wage in this case) on the market creates a situation where the quantity demanded (hired labor) is less than the quantity supplied (people seeking work).  It obviously results in unemployment for the ones who need employment the most.  Reagan was smart on the issue.  He failed to raise the minimum wage long enough so that the wage came close to market equilibrium, making the rate control moot and more people became employed.   Unfortunately, people also think in terms of the bottom end of the market and I think, as others do too, that many out there are working for less than they can get.
