Prayers for my stepmother... January 30, 2005 8:01 PM

My stepmother is experiencing congestive heart failure and her doctor has told her that she will have to be on oxygen at home for the rest of her life.  I don't know if this means that her life expectancy is shortened, or that her quality of life will decrease due to the oxygen issue, as she won't give us a straight answer as to what exactly is going on medically, but it doesn't sound good either way.

I would greatly appreciate any prayers for her, she needs them.

Thank you very much,

Hi Holly January 30, 2005 8:37 PM

She will be in my prayers, and here is a good message board for people with CHF. There is a lot to read, but you have to join like here to post. They are very helpful there.

Thank you so much for your prayers and thank you also for the link, I will be sure to check it out as my stepmom does not have internet access and seems to have limited information (so she lets on!) on her condition.

Have a good evening,

You're welcome Holly January 30, 2005 8:59 PM

There are a lot of people that live with the condition for years. If you sign on to the board to ask a question, they might ask you what her EF is. I don't have a clue what that means. I am a member of that board, but I don't post. I joined the board to let them know how my brother was doing when he went into the hospital.

They are very knowledgable, and even have a nurse that posts there too. The people are very nice, and will give you lots of answers to put your mind at ease, and there are many Christians on that board too.

I am so sorry to hear about your stepmother.  I also suffer from COPD/CHF.  I finally got assigned to a really smart doctor at the clinic and he put me on a medication called Mavik.  Two months later they gave me a 2nd echocardiogram and it read negative to CHF.  As long as I'm on this medication, everything is as it should be.  He said if I ever go off this medication, I will have the CHF showing up again on the echocardiograms.  I am not on oxygen (yet) but I am on the inhalers.  Speak to her doctor and see if he is familiar with Mavik and if she might be a candidate for that medication also.  Once that is improved, maybe her breathing difficulties will improve as well.  The oxygen will limit her daily functions and quality of life but it will keep the blood oxygenated to the other parts of the body which is the most important reason for using it.  As long as there is no further damage to the lungs, it shouldn't shorten her life span.  Since I understand what she is experiencing, I will definitely place her on my prayer list and keep her there for God's healing mercies.  Please keep me updated on her condition so that the prayers can be adjusted accordingly.
