Time to nicely spread the facts about declawing as this is a big time for people to be getitng kittens.
Most people who opt to declaw are not aware of the actual procedure that the cat undergoes.
This is the time to hand out flyers about the procedure. To infor the person that it is the same as amputating the first knuckle of your finder. And that most declawed cats are not kept for the entire life due to reasons that can be related to a declaw.
If a person insists they need a declawed cat encourage them to visit the shelters and rescues and online boards and offer to assist them in finding a cat already declawed.
If they insist on declawing you can't argue with them. It will just make them mad. Instead be there for them as they will need support in the long run. Remind them that they will have to deal with the results for the rest of the cats life and that rehoming the cat should not be considered.
Here is a downloadable pdf flyer you can use to handout and educate people.
It DOES feel like it never ended. But it's here, in full swing.
I just posted so many nursing moms with kittens sitting in high-kill shelters...I'm afraid of what's going to happen from now until summer.

this is a wonderful write-up. do you have anything that goes over the training process, trimming nails, nail caps, etc.?
my only concern is that this brochure may be too long and in-depth for shelter adopters to read. currently i am using the manicure or mutilation article: http://www.phsspca.org/training/declawing.htm
i like the article because it goes over the declawing procedure as well as the training process. my only concern over it is that adopters who are pro-declaw or have declawed in the past are often offended by it. for that reason i have been browsing for something else.
i will certainly make some copies of the brochure you posted to hand out as well.
